Monthly Shareware CD Message #49693
From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · General June 2, 1993 8:00 AM
Monthly Shareware CD-ROM Announced: Starting in July 1993, Public (software) Library will be issuing a monthly CD-ROM of public domain and shareware software for the PC. It is expected to have over 300 programs of all varieties (Windows 3, games, business, home, sounds, graphics, animation, etc.) which have been submitted…
#20173 Which CD ROM? Message #20296
From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · Marketplace April 16, 1992 4:07 PM
There's a little conflict between a "basic drive for reference software", which implies a slow, cheap drive, and one that can be used for games, most of which require more expensive, higher speed drives and a sound card.
From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · Multimedia April 16, 1992 4:07 PM
MV has just informed me that delivery of the CDPC has been pushed back "at least a month" from the promised Easter delivery date. My company, PsL, sells it and has been taking orders for it since January…
#20175 Wait to buy CDROM? Message #20294
From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · General April 16, 1992 4:07 PM
I would say that they chances are excellent that current CD-ROM drives will be badly outdated 3-4 years from now. I would be greatly disappointed if they were not!! Of course, the same could be said for most any other computer hardware. Around 3-4 years ago, people were paying 2-3…
#20106 Art CDs Message #20251
From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · CD ROM Production April 15, 1992 9:24 AM
At PsL, we have two art CD's. One is Coates Art Review of the Impressionists. The other is the Corel 1991 Art Show. The Corel CD has 1100+ designs from their 1991 contest, but it also contains the Electronic Library of Art, which contains over 1100 masterpieces of Western art.
From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · Multimedia April 7, 1992 9:57 AM
Nope, MV is not offering the 73M in a bundle. There is a possibility that their CDPC external subsytem will include the NEC drive in it at a later date (June or later). MV is handling the upgrade directly. You can not do it thru dealers.
From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · Multimedia April 7, 1992 9:48 AM
Yes, you should be able to run both CD's at the same time. If the Toshiba is SCSI, you can hook it up to the Pro-16 card with the external drive adapter kit, although for the $60-$70 that it costs, you might want to stick with the controller you already…
#19957 Purchase 73M Message #19969
From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · Drives/Hardware April 6, 1992 9:05 PM
Dealer cost for the Pro-16 bundle with NEC drive is over $900, so good luck on getting one at that price!
#19948 #best CD-ROM bundle? Message #19968
From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · Drives/Hardware April 6, 1992 9:04 PM
Are you aware that the new Media Vision Pro-16 MM System includes the NEC 83M with the 16-bit Pro-16 sound card?
From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · Multimedia April 6, 1992 4:48 PM
This is one of those rare instances where something that sounds too good to be true actually is true. We cannot guarantee the availability of all the CD's in our catalog at the bundle prices unless you order a bare drive (ie: not one already part of a bundle), but…

#18612 NEC CDR-73 Questions Message #18629
From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · Macintosh February 25, 1992 7:27 AM
My eyes must have blurred on me. It's 73M/83M, not 72/82. The 73M is an external drive, and the 83M is an internal.
#18533 DAK\BSR\SONY CD-Rom Message #18591
From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · Drives/Hardware February 24, 1992 7:47 AM
"I haven't found a single area where it fails to work. It's a bit slow at times on long animations…" If it does not properly play long animations, then by definition, you have found a situation "where it fails to work" the way an MPC drive would.
From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · Macintosh February 24, 1992 7:47 AM
Yes, the 72M and 82M have access times of 280ms. The "M" indicates that the drive is MPC compliant, so those without the M are not.
#18540 #NEC CDRs Message #18588
From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · Drives/Hardware February 24, 1992 7:10 AM
You can get Win/MME from IBM dealers (if you can find one who knows what you are talking about). Otherwise, you have to order a MM Kit or sound card.
From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · Macintosh February 22, 1992 5:00 PM
1. The "M" drives are faster. 2. $739 is a good price for the 73 Gallery. List price for it is $1000. 3. If you can go without lunches, or something, and get the faster drive, you will never regret it. If you get the slower drive, then every time…

Sorry, I am not used to being on forums with mixed religions. The archive will self-extract on a PC only. I'll change the description.

Nope. The Windows and DOS versions are packaged separately. The Windows version has only a Windows access program. (At least, that is the way it is on my copy.)
#18474 #NEC CDRs Message #18486
From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · Drives/Hardware February 21, 1992 8:07 AM
The 35 is ok if you don't want to pop $700+ on a complete MPC-compliant multimedia system. Yes, we ship overseas. See the file CDROM.EXE on DL-10 of this forum for a catalog of CD-ROM hardware and software.
#CD Catalog Uploaded Message #18471
From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · Marketplace February 20, 1992 4:51 PM
Available on DL-10 of this forum is CDROM.EXE, a self-extracting archive file (for PC's) containing a catalog of CD-ROM hard/software products sold by PsL. We have tried to include honest reviews of the products, rather than just sales pitches. Your comments would be appreciated.
Multimedia Kit Message #18461
From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · Multimedia February 20, 1992 9:21 AM
Uh, that should be "the price of the external is $1000", not "$100". Last time I made a typo on here, everyone called up to order the "bargain".
#18345 NEC CDR 73M Message #18364
From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · Drives/Hardware February 17, 1992 8:45 AM
I think you need to ask "what gives" to the company you bought the drive from. I have found that many resellers, and even wholesalers, are not aware of the difference between the "M" and non-M versions of the NEC's.
#18356 #Multimedia Kit Message #18363
From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · Multimedia February 17, 1992 8:18 AM
The internal drive kit is a much more cost-effective package, and of course it takes up less room, so if you have a half-height drive bay free, I would go for the internal. I doubt that the Toshiba has enough speed advantage to justify the additional cost of trying to…
#18353 NEC CDRs Message #18362
From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · Drives/Hardware February 17, 1992 8:17 AM
I'm glad you are satisfied with it. What are you using for a stereo sound card and how much did it cost? How do MPC titles, like KQV, run on this system?
#18297 NEC CDRs Message #18313
From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · Drives/Hardware February 14, 1992 5:34 PM
The 73 is an external drive and the 83 is an internal, which explains the price difference. Neither of the drives is MPC compliant unless it has "M" after the number (ie: 73M, 83M). So if you buy one, you better be happy with the CD's that come with it,…

Yeah, the big mags seem to ignore the street prices, most of the time. I remember getting a magazine (PC Computing, I think) that said something like "20 Great 286 Systems for under $2000" at a time when 286's with VGA and hard disks were selling for under $1000. I…

From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · Macintosh January 24, 1992 8:56 AM
Cities has about 10-12 pictures of each city, narrated by a local citizen. While this idea (using a local voice) is cute, it makes a lot of it hard to understand. Most of the rest of it is text – descriptions of entertainment, hotels, transportation, etc. – except for area…

The two best-selling MM kits right now are the SB kit that you saw advertised and the Media Vision kit. The SB Pro has a proprietary CD interface, meaning that you are locked into one manufacturer's drive. The MV kit has a standard SCSI interface. That means that if you…

From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · Macintosh January 23, 1992 1:18 PM
I got the Great Cities CD, which is similar to Orient, and was unimpressed with it. IMO, it makes more sense to buy (or better yet, rent) a video tape of the same areas. That would give you better quality and quantity pictures and sounds.
#17286 MAMMAL and Poor VGA Message #17338
From: Nelson Ford CDROM Forum · DOS, Windows, OS/2 January 22, 1992 7:25 PM
I believe that the Nation Geo Mammals uses 320×200 resolution scanned photos. If so, there is nothing you can do. Ironically, the lesser known Audubon Mammals uses drawings rather than photos, but they are beautifully detailed and colored and they also have sounds.
