#163635 3DS OS/2 Message #164381
From: Doug Azzarito Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Wishlist April 12, 1995 2:56 PM
> So I think we're better off keeping our tools in one spot where > they can interact most efficiently. And so you can switch to SoftImage without switching platforms, eh? — Doug Azzarito
#163976 3DSv2 with OS2 warp Message #164380
What version of 3DS are you running? I have no trouble running 3DSr3. I set the DPMI detection to ENABLED instead of AUTO, and crank up the DPMI memory to 32M. Earlier versions of 3DS may not work, because they use VCPI instead of DPMI. — Doug Azzarito
#163661 Rendering in OS/2 Message #164365
The resolution you pick for your slave 3DS.SET does not affect the resolutions you can render in. I have heard about a VIBRANT driver that runs in TEXT mode, which means it'll run great in the background, but I haven't found it. — Doug Azzarito
#163338 #Rendering in OS/2 Message #163563
> Is there any way for 3D Studio rendering in the background when > running under OS/2 ? Yes. You just have to pick a video mode for 3DS that is compatible with the desktop resolution. Try running 3DS in 16-color mode. If you can switch it into a window…
> Come now, Doug, don't get nasty. Take me out of context, eh? My nastiness was aimed at a guy who said Windows 3.x has better multithreading than OS/2. Umm, errrrr. Windows 3.x has *no* multithreading. Doesn't he deserve high heat on the flame thrower? — Doug Azzarito
> don't leave any blood on the floor of the forum. If I'm accurate in my flames, all the blood splatters on the walls, and the floor stays relatively clean. 😉 — Doug Azzarito
> Saying that he looks "foolish" does nothing to help further > anyone's understanding. If it was a simple mistake in facts, I could correct him, but he's spouting nonsense that plainly shows he's never even used the software he's talking about. People who do that usually don't want to…
> if your system is running only new apps, you see hourglass less > frequently than in OS/2. I have but one suggestion for you. Until you use and write apps for OS/2, don't talk about it. You just look foolish when you say things that are so obviously wrong.
> Yes but how long did it take to put the two together? I've never run 3DS3 under DOS. I used to run 3DS2 under DOS, but it was too much of a pain. When I got 3DS3, it went on OS/2 from the start. > How much hardware did…
> As for capability to launch an application when system display > hourglass: even Windows 3.1 are capable of that. Sorry. Bzzzzzzzzzzzt! Wrong, but thanks for playing. Windows is a single-threaded operating system. When one windows program has the thread, NOTHING ELSE can run until that program gives it up.…
> Do you want to know problems with OS/2? Yes! But let's not clutter this forum – we can discuss it in OS2SUPPORT forum. > OS/2 didn't recognize my modem (I have quite trivial and standard > setup), on the other hand it didn't allow me to correct IRQ >…
> I still think OS/2-Win is kinda clunky, and a waste of space for > someone who doesn't used on single OS/2 application. Yes, but when I can get native OS/2 versions of Corel Draw and Macromedia Director to go with a native 3DS, it's a lot better than switching…
Once you've got the Win32 stuff running (probably already do), how about letting someone like me port it to OS/2 to show you it can be done – it wouldn't even take a full partnership in Yost group to do it! 🙂 Then you'd have OS/2 Intel and PowerPC in…
> what about the problems of moving to OS/2? For 3DS users, the problems moving to NT will be worse. > I can't wait to get 3DS running in WinNT! Gee, I thought NT fans were used to waiting. I couldn't wait to get 3DS running under OS/2, and I…
> If you would render something under OS/2 and move your cursor > outside 3DS window, you would still have hourglass and wouldn't > capable of doing anything else Don't you hate it when people manipulate your mind? You've been fed a line of bull so rich, I can smell…
> It is also time to make the move to stomp out MS-DOS For most apps, I agree, but not for something like 3DS. When you install 3DS on a system, it CONSUMES your system. All DOS is used for is a quick & dirty filesystem and loader. 3DS does…
Yes, I know that Bob is making these decisions. I don't think he'd want to hear from me, owner of 1 copy of 3DS. However, perhaps the official OS/2 spokespeople can let him know what he's missing out on. BTW, by the time you release an NT version, do you…
> Unfortunately, we're resource-limited (since we're such a small > group), and the Autodesk folks have decided that NT is what they > want to support in the future re 3DS. So, they picked a platform that has only sold about .5 million units, is not very compatible with DOS…
> we all need to be running on the same OS. But OS/2 lets you run your DOS & Windows apps quite well, it gives you a stable and mature 32-bit development environment, and it's an easy port to Win95, should that OS ever ship. Besides, 3DS for DOS already…
#153416 #OS/2 Settings Message #153776
> I expected that with 16MB RAM and a 5428 CIRRUS VLB MB would be > enough to run 3DS in background. It's all up to the video mode. What are you running as an OS/2 resolution? That may be why you can't run in the background. I can ask…

From: Doug Azzarito Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Hware/OpSys/video February 14, 1995 10:03 PM
Does your "background" copy of 3DS run in a window? If so, you've got it properly configured for background execution (about the only thing that can stop you from there is "DOS_BACKGROUND_EXECUTION" set to OFF). My 3DS system blew up a couple days ago, so I can't check these things,…
#Time to PAR? Message #152270
My system just toasted itself, so I'm rebuilding from scratch. A PAR sounds great, but I've also got a brochure from DAEWOO International about MARS (MPEG Animation Recording System). Does anyone have any comparison info on these two? MARS doesn't need its own drive, and it stores 1 minute of…
#140561 OS/2 better than DOS Message #140760
> I cant get my slave copy of 3ds to render in the background. You need a 3ds.set that's configured so the video mode doesn't conflict with the foreground. I use 640x480x16 for the MAIN display in both my foreground and background systems – That way my background renderer doesn't…
> I understand I need some kind of Pen Software for OS/2. If you want OS/2 to understand pen gestures on your Wacom tablet, you'll need a pen-enabled shell, which is available from IBM. If you want your applications to understand the tablet, you are probably in the same boat…
> but exactly how do you suspend and resume programs and processes > in OS/2? For DOS apps, set the DOS BACKGROUND EXECUTION to OFF, and switch away from the process. For OS/2 apps, the application will suspend whenever it needs something that only foreground apps get (keystrokes, usually). –…

#139029- #3d studio on OS2 Message #139700
> Can somebody tell me whether 3d studio will run on OS2? Yes, it does. I'm running 3DSr3 under Warp now – I wouldn't consider DOS, because that means I'd have to use FAT. OS/2's HPFS is much better for 3DS work. > Will it run in a window while…
#138424 os/2 & 3ds Message #138817
> what video card are you using? An S3 805 (built-in). > what is the render time for the foreground and > background session? I'll have to do some comparisons. Since getting a new machine, I am doing network rendering on another machine (but still run both machines under OS/2.…

> a native OS2 version o 3DS… that is up the > Autodesk/Yost…chances are that they will do a NT version. I think it's up to Autodesk. I just hope they've looked at something like WATCOM C/C++, which comes in both 16 and 32-bit flavors, and does DOS/WIN/OS2/NT in the…
#137379 OS/2 better than DOS Message #137486
> 15 processors in how many machines? No, I said "PROCESSES" not "PROCESSORS." I don't rate SMP hardware, so I do this all on a wimpy 486/50. As for OS/2 SMP, it scales nicely from 2-8 processors, and then starts to level off.

> I've been told that OS/2 doesn't have peer-to-peer networking Slap the person who told you that. First, we're talking about ONE BOX (intra-computer networking). OS/2 has had that for years. I've been able to run 2 copies of 3DS on OS/2 (only 1 CPU) since OS/2 2.1. For "inter-computer"…

> Depends on how IBM implements VDM's if each runs on a processor > then purhaps a slight increase…this is doubtful though. Why? OS/2 implements SMP (Symmetric MultiProcessing) with some hybrid modifications. A process can be assigned to a CPU. A VDM is a process, so if you run 2…

From: Doug Azzarito Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Hware/OpSys/video November 21, 1994 11:37 AM
> the SMP version of OS/2 Warp (the version made specifically for > mulitple processors) has not been released yet. Why wait for SMP Warp? SMP OS/2 2.11 is out on the market NOW. Sure, Warp has an updated GUI, and a smaller memory footprint, but that's not top priority…

> Give me an OS/2 version that I can network AND use Multiprocessing I don't understand – which of those can't you do with the current OS/2? I am running about 15 processes right now with OS/2, and I am networked. If you have 2 machines connected via Ethernet, check…
#OS/2 better than DOS Message #136948
I had an opportunity to do some 3DS rendering comparisons between DOS and OS/2 Warp yesterday, but my experience confirmed my suspiscions…DOS isn't worth my trouble! Here's why: I just got a brand-new pentium-66 machine, 16M RAM, S3 864 video, 540M IDE hard drive. It had DOS 6 on it,…
#136553 OS/2 Rendering Times Message #136707
> I'm trying to understand where OS/2 and WinNT are incompatible. If > OS/2 can handle Win32 but not anything WinNT OS/2 Warp handles WIN32s programs. MS has WIN32s, WIN32c, WIN32, and possibly other "standards." I don't know which one(s) NT uses. That's why I just ignore the whole mess…

> I just purchased two Dual Pentium mother boards from YMS and I > need an operating system that will support them! PMJI, but Warp doesn't support dual pentiums… yet. OS/2 2.11 *does* have an SMP version (if your system is MPS 1.1 compliant, it'll work). I've used 3DS on…
#119743 #3DS OS2 Warp II Message #120234
I haven't put WARP II on my 3DS machine yet, but I will do so ASAP, and try to figure out why 3DS doesn't run – if it's not a major problem, I should be able to get it fixed by the time it really ships. — Doug Azzarito
#117582 OS2/3DS Message #118058
If OS20MEMU is not working properly, make sure you have the right driver loaded. I know the author released a separate driver for each version of OS/2. If you still can't get it to work, send me the output from the SYSLEVEL command and your CONFIG.SYS and I'll ask the…

#116411 3DS/ NT Message #116567
> What display modes can you use while doing this? 24 bit? 3DS running in the foreground can do whatever it wants to the display. When it's in the background, it has to be "well behaved." That's why I use a second copy of 3DS, set to generic VGA to…
#116377 3DS/ NT Message #116566
There aren't many "secret tricks" to running 3DS under OS/2. The only "problem" is when running 2 copies of 3DS (one for slave rendering), the background copy still wants to put up a graphics screen (the progess 'gas gauge'). If the graphics mode being used for the background isn't compatible…
#115821 #3DS/ NT Message #116333
> when I could hope to see a NT version of ACAD and 3d Studio? Why wait for NT? The current version of OS/2 works with 3DS now. I get to use 3DSR3 on my OS/2 system, and can switch away and run 32-bit programs concurrently. — Doug Azzarito
#115796 #OS2/3DS Message #116332
> As I understand it, OS/2 for Windows is still running Windows. > That probably means that the video driver implementation is > different than straight OS/2. Nope – OS/2 for windows *IS* OS/2, it's just that rather than shipping a modified WINDOWS system on the OS/2 disks, OS/2 expects…

> When ever I alt-esc out of 3DS I have determined that 3ds "STOPS". You can find out quickly if this is a video problem. Instead of ALT-ESC out of 3DS, try ALT-HOME. If OS/2 says it doesn't support the video in a window, then you'll know why it doesn't…
#115210 Windows and 3D Studio Message #115579
Depending on your setup, rendering under OS/2 will be faster than DOS. For one thing, my render drive is an HPFS drive (the OS/2 High Performance File System). 3DS gets much faster performance from this drive than from a DOS FAT drive. I can also have a single LARGE drive,…
I'm running 3DSR3 under OS/2 2.11, which allows me to run 3DS (two copies) on the same machine, and I can still run a WinApp if I want to. I'd bet real money that you can't do that under Windows. — Doug Azzarito
