>>Jonas' suggestion will work fine. Just don't forget to set the save-last-image to off.
>>You won't see the output image on the screen since it will be generated directly to the file you specify. Just be aware, that when generating such large images 4000 x 3000 you'd better have a LOT of memory or you'll be swapping to disk very often.
>>Sure.. set your render configutation dialog box video display driver selection to NULL and type in the values 4000 x 3000.
#Higher Resolutions
Message #168508
I need a high resolution tiff image created from one of the frames of my animation, I have tried several times to render a tif image at a resolution higher than the 800 by 600 resolution set-up during the initial installation of 3DS. Is there a way that I can…
>>Not! Nancy Fulton wrote 3DS Applied. Inside 3D Studio is by Greg Pyros, Steven Elliot & Phillip Miller.
>>I think the phone number is in the 3D-BOOK.TXT (or 3DBOOKS.TXT) file in the libraries. Wait a minute — how about: "3D Studio Applied" by Nancy Fulton 310/458-6114 Advanstar 800/598/6008
>>If you're playing the flic in 3DS, make sure you set Preview/Set Speed to a fast speed.
>>Nancy Fulton, 100425, 2203
>>Also, the book with the release 4 supplement is NOT Inside 3DS, but rather "3D Studio Applied", by Nancy Fulton, published by Advanstar
>>I think you're talking about Karen Fulton's "3D Studio Applied" book, which was waiting for an R4 "supplement" to be added to it — "Inside 3D Studio" came out with major revisions covering R4 (certainly not a "supplement"). I think you can even buy the supplement for Karen's book separately,…
#Inside 3D Studio,Author
Message #162112
Karen, ( I believe that you are the author of 'Inside 3D Studio' , sorry if I got it wrong ) Anyway, I had talked to you back in late Dec '94 on the telephone about obtaining a copy of your book. I gave you my Visa # and you…
>>Playback speed is dependant on size of the flic, how much movement there is in the flic, the resolution, the hard drive, the speed of the processor, your video card, The position of the sun and planets, and the atomic weight of cheetos
#Flic Playback Speed
Message #161833
Can someone please tell me what really effects the playback speed of a Flic file?. I have noticed that most Flic files play back slowly even on a fast PC. What can be done to speed up the redraws of a Flic file? Is it the video card? Any suggestions?…
>>I'd say it's impossible to become fluent with 3DS without cracking the books. 🙂 You may find additional insights into efficient DXF->3DS issues in the "Inside 3DS for R4" book that had contributions/chapters written by several architects. You may want to peruse it at your local bookstore.
>>> One place to start is to review the tips found on pg. 3-40 of the 3ds Reference Manual.
#Rendering DXF Files
Message #155562
I just imported a DXF file from Autocad to 3DS, I was just wondering if anyone knows of any special treatment that these files should recieve when setting them up for rendering or are they the same deal as a regular 3DS file?
>>> I'm sorry but there is not.
>>No, there isn't, BUT… here's what you can do. AutoCAD R13 has a command called 3DSOUT which will crsate 3D Studio (3DS) files. Also, AutoCAD has a command called DXFOUT which created DXF files and these can be imported into 3D Studio's 3D Editor, 2D Shaper and 3D Lofter. It's…
#DWG Format
Message #153793
Is there a way to open up a DWG file from AutoCad in 3DS? Thank you, Jim
>>Yes! I hope the new 3ds and Ipas' blow away SoftImage NT, LightWave 3.5, Crystal Topas and any other renderer. And I'm sure it will because Autodesk and the Yost Group are awsome, and will now and forever rule the 3D market!
>>NT is not slow and not buggy (although it is a bit large). Regarding porting decisions… I suppose that Autodesk feels that NT has a better chance at providing the market opportunity Autodesk wants for the future

Phil Inside 3DS builds on the excellent 3DS tutorial and manual set. It presumes you have a basic foundation and wish to learn/explore more – a lot more . Thank you again. Jim
Phil Thank you for the book information. Is inside 3DS good for beginners? Jim
Jodi Thank you very much for the 3DS book suggestion. I will give them a call. Jim

"I'd like to hear from anyone using PRISMS software on the SGI. How does it compare to alias? What are it's strengths/weaknesses? What use is it best suited for? Best platform for best performance? I have a call into Side Effects for info, but would like to hear from users.…
Hi Dwayne Can you please tell me where I can get in touch with 'Shablamm' Thanks again, Jim
" There is a raytracer engine for 3DS. You`ve might heard anything about RayMan. It reads your complete 3DS file with objects, lights, mappings, cameras and so on. There are some RayMan images in the lib. Search for RayMan/Raytracer/VisArt. You can get more information from Digimation…" Thank you for the…
"the only one I know of is a raytracer being sold through Digimation. Call them – the number's in the back of all the CAD/graphics magazines." Thank you for your response. I will check it out.
#Renderer for 3DS
Message #135059
Hi All! Can anyone please tell me if their are any separate Renderers for 3DS? If so can you supply any names or numbers and any ideas of cost. Any recommendations? Does anyone think that they are worth it? yes or no. I am not unhappy with the 3DS renderer,…
Philip Sorry for the delay replying to your message. I personally, I'm not an animator, I just have a great interest in it and have looked at just about everything and do enjoy playing with some programs at home. My friend at ILM is always very busy and I myself…
Dwayne It's a shame the SGI's weren't affordable. I work on an Indigo 2 and it's fantastic. Jim
Alvaro Unfortunatly, no you cannot upgrade. It is designed to be a learning experience. I guess if you got a freelance job it could pay for your full production version. Jim
Dwayne You really have out done yourself! I really didn't expect such a detailed response. It is appreciated. I take it your background experience is from the Amiga? Would you say that you speak fairly toward the PC? and are looking forward to the release of Lightwave yourself for the…
John I really apprciate your comments. It is very interesting to hear peoples comments. I take it that both of you are from an Amiga background? Jim
Dwayne Thank you very much for your explaination of LightWave. It sounds very good, especially the price. I am really looking forward to it's release on the PC. Jim
John Thank you for your message. Macromedia does seem to be the most popular and it is under serious consideration. Jim
James Try the McAfee anti Virus they are really good. Type 'GO MCAFEE' or call (408) 988-3832, fax (408) 970-9727, or write: McAfee, Inc., 2710 Walsh Avenue, Suite 200, Santa Clara, California 95051-0963. I don't work for them or anything! Jim
Alvaro Why don't you look into buying a 'student' version of 3DS, it is a lot cheaper. You just can't use it for production, assuming you are a student.
Thank you for the great response. I'm getting excited about Lightwave the way you are discribing it! If you have the time I'd love to hear about a comparison.
Jim Thank you for the information, I look forward to the release of Lightwave. Jim
Mark I know what you mean! Thanks, Jim
Jeff Thanks for the info. Jim
Chad Once again, do you have any telephone numbers for the products you mentioned here for the PC. I'd be really interested. Where do you get all this information from? Thanks Jim
Chad Pardon me for jumping in here, but do you have any names, addresses or telephone numbers for the animation packages you have mentioned? Do you really think that Lightwave will be better than 3DS? Is that what you recommend for some to produce quality animations at home on a…
Mike Macromind is basically a multimedia program. From all accounts I don't think that anyone can look you straight in the face and tell you it is easy to use. Apparently the learning curve is horribly long. What platform do you want to use it on? Is it for business?…
