I'm not sure if you got my other message? How are you going to animate it? Will you keep it as a metaball system, or will you convert it to polygons? If you keep it as a metaball system, How will you keep the textures locked to it, when it…
How much is your Metaballs Ipas for 3DS? L8R, Fred Nilsson
#Xmas list, part 1
Message #160983
> Autodesk could really improve 3D Studio by carefully looking at all the other PC 3D programs out there and using the best ideas from each. I agree with that, but how about looking at some higher end software. I've heard Softimage is heading in the pc direction, maybey as…
Thanx, I'll check it out!!
#Remember that Dino.smk??
Message #136593
So does anyone know who did that dino.smk file. I think it was great.. Does anyone know how he did this with 3ds.. How did he map it? and How did he animate it? Has he done anything as good since.. If so what are they?? thanx, Fred Nilsson
Thanx, that's very nice of you? Look for three more coming out in the next few months. Oh no, not more dancing cars… ..
Hi Keith, My name is Fred Nilsson, I am currently working at R/Greenberg Associates in NY. I am a Softimage animator, and I know Wavefront and some of Alias as well. Would you mind sending me any info on the jobs available. I have worked on some character animation jobs,…
Yes, however they developed in house software for it…
Hey Alex , remember me…. >(like they did with the Shell commercial where they have the car dancing) Yes, however we did so much cleanup on that motion. It was a mess when we first started. The Flock of Birds is allright, but nothing great. For the tango spot we…
Well I work at R/Greenberg Associates in NY and we use Softimage. It's pretty good, but I wish we had other packages as well. As far as facial animation, the best I've seen is from Prisms. You have all types of control over how to deform your face. I haven't…
I have a scr2vue utility , I will upload it in the utilities directory.. I don't know if it works. I really didn't try it. John wrote it for me when I had asked him for it a few months ago..
Ok that is true , it is not in the menu cells , however you can still undo, with the quick key— U— up to five times. Usually it works, but with certain deformations with IK skeletons, that's where we run into trouble undoing things.. thanx, Fred Nilsson
#New 3ds 4.0…
Message #130286
When is 4.0 supposed to be released? Will your IK have any type of constraints, if so how will they work.. Will they be anything similar to Softimage or Wavefront or any other systems.. What other features will 4.0 have? thanx, Fred Nilsson
Sure it is , I undo animation moves all the time.. Fred Nilsson
So, how does Softimage do it. You can undo anything as many levels as you want if you set it … Usually five levels is more than enough. Check it out… l8r, Fred Nilsson
#Inverse Kinematics
Message #127630
When is Release 4.0 due out…. Or is it already out…. With your inverse kinematics , how did you guys end up doing the enveloping (that is the assigning points to ik joints.) I use Softimage at work, and I was wondering if you guys did anything similar. Like being…

Message #90447
Thanx for the info. That's too bad about Softimage. Would it be possible to add IGES into it as one of the formats. Are you guys sure that they don't document their file format anymore. Have you asked them? Anyway my postal address is, Fred Nilsson 106 Riverview Drive Harrington…

Hi, my name is Fred Nilsson, I am an animator for RGA Digital Studios in NYC. We mainly use Softimage, however soon we will probably be acquiring Alias , Wavefront or Prisms. Hopefully all of them but that's not up to me.. Do you have an SGI version of your…
#Lightwave Windows????

Thanx for all the info. Unfortunately I can't access the avalon site yet, because of some ip host setup thing, but I'll leave that to our system admins.
Could you tell me where some good sites on the net are for obtaining objects and or texture maps. Also what are some good animation/graphics and sgi forums? Could you give me information on how to get to them. Cause we just got a t1 line in and surfin around…
We recently acquired Alias 5.0 Power Animator at work, and they have a great way of previewing texture mapping. You can project your textures directly onto the wire frames. And manipulate it around , scale the texture, move it up or down, rotate the mapping icon. It's really a cool…
I will do some tests and upload a few images. Fred Nilsson
No, that was Rhythm and Hues. Their hair system is different than ours. We use a strand of particles, to do the hair, It really is cool. But unfortunately, their is no interface for it . It is all script based. We have our own renderer, and it was added…
Maybey that would be a really cool IPAS, however I would assume it should be done with some type of a turbulence function that can be applied to the lights.. This is how we have done this type of stuff, in our propreitary renderer at RGA. Fred Nilsson
Hi, John, My name is Fred Nilsson, I'm an animator at RGA-NY, I have used 3D studio in the past, in fact it's what I started on. So I visit this forum often to find out whats goin on. The programmers at RGA have and are still working on several…
#Autodesk&XAOS
Message #95832
I've read in several different places, inluding here that Autodesk and Xaos have signed some kind of deal. I was just curious in what kind of effects are going to available, and how they will be accessed from within 3DS. Will it be an IXP in videopost or some other…
What else would you like to know? It's really cool. You can export DXF files from any landscape as well as their texture maps. You can do all sorts of cool things. Fred Nilsson
Yeah, I too am beta testing Real 3D, have you gotten the latest upgrade, it really has been improved dramatically. Have you done any projects with it yet, or any cool animations. I haven't had that much time to play with it. As for 3D studio, I agree it's real…
What have you used????
Message #93100
What other packages have you used? You seem to know alot about this stuff. The flocking stuff, and the spring dynamics. Are you an animator? If so where do you work. Have you used Prism's before, that's about the only package that I know of that has the spring dynamics…
I too would really be interested in this flocking routine. I have alot of ideas that could really use this technique. Everything M.G BATCHELOR mentioned sounds excellent. If this could be done I would love it. Fred Nilsson
Well, the MakePath utility, that comes on the new Vista Pro 3.1 CD, is a utility that easily lets you make paths that either fly, through a canyon or any mountain structures. You have control over most things, ie… bank, pitch, roll, speed, etc…also which type of aircraft, whether it…
One idea I had for bringing in the VUE file, is being able to use this path as not only a path for the camera but for a path of an object as well. That way we could have a car driving over a landscape or a jet flying through…
#RENDERWARE
Message #89982
Have you guys read about RENDERWARE. I hear it can really scream.. Has anyone ever seen it. Are there any plans to implement this into future versions of 3DS. thanx, Fred Nilsson
I am also looking for something similar. I have been using Vista Pro. And just recently the guys from VRLI wrote a SCR2VUE converter which converts the paths you make in Vistapro and turns them into .vue files. But I just can't get the path back into 3DS. I had…
I just bought the 3.1 cd also and it's wonderfull. I called up VRLI and had them send it to me C.O.D. It only cost me 100 dollars. And that comes with the morphing program, the make path program, and a few other programs as well. It's definatly worth it…
SCR2VUE converter!!!
Message #89066
To anyone whos interested. If you go into the VRLI section. They have just written a SCR2VUE converter so you can convert your paths the other way around if you wanted to ..
#BLOB MODELER???
Message #89065
What's this I hear about a BLOB MODELER for 3DS? Do you mean that someone is writing a Meta balls feature for 3ds… Cool, let me in on some info.
Thanx, I'll give it a shot… Fred NIlsson
Well, unfortunately my Wavefront experienc doesnt include Dynamtion or Kinemation. I did have some Wavefront experience at the school I went to but they didnt have the latest stuff. I think I know what you are talking about with the FFD's cause I watched the demonstration at Siggraph last year…
Envelopes(Skin&Bones)
Message #88123
I have another suggestion for inverse kinematics. I'm not sure if you've ever used softimage's inverse kinematics and global, and local envelopes. But it is really a great feature. You can take any model. Draw some inverse kinematics chains inside the objects, and then assign the mesh object to be…

Does anyone have any tips on making bee's wings look like bees wings. I mean the appearance that they are moving super fast. I've tried motion blur but it just doesnt look right.. Any help, would be much appreciated? Thanx, Fred Nilsson

Mouse Character
Message #88105
I was recently reading the new Computer Pictures magazine and read your article on the production process. Thanx, for the tips. Anyway, I was just curious in how you made that Mouse character. Also, what did you use to animate, it. —ie.. tuber, morphing, or what??? How did you get…
#Inverse Kinematics
Message #85968
Lately, I've been playing around alot with Softimage and have really been impressed with their inverse kinematics and skeletal system. The way it works is that you can constrain joints to objects and then just move the objects instead of the joint. It makes it so you can lock the…
Yeah, but do you know how much faster they render the frames. The company I work for is working on a really cool Colgate animation, full of lots of particles and stuff. On an Indigo 2 with an R4000 it took 1:18 minutes a frame, and on the Onyx it…
No, I'm pretty sure you can get a Indigo 2 for 99,000 and then a reality engine for another 99,000. Not, like I have 200,000 dollars lying around. But it sure would be nice…
It's Pixar who does all the Listerine commercials. Yeah, they really do some amazing stuff. But hey when you got SGI Reality Engines, Watch out.. I just got to play around on one yesterday, and it was the most incredible computer I've ever used. Real Time almost everything.. .
I agree, the exporting of texture maps is pretty weak, but there is a way that works really well: Have you tried rendering the texture map, by moving the camera above the landscape, and rendering out to a really high res. picture. I've gotten it to look really good. In…
