Tired Keys
Message #141665
Rejuvenating a tired keyboard. I am using an A3000. In the last few months, some frequently-used keys became unreliable. Eventually the letter "A" worked only about 8 times out of 10 hits. The space bar worked near the middle, but not near the ends. I took the keyboard apart and…
SMC wrecks drives
Message #128654
I got some floppy disks from Software of the Month Club. One of them fell apart in my drive. The drive no longer works. Another of them is jammed in one of my other drives. SMC has a serious problem with the quality of their disks. I do not recommend…
#CDROM How to
Message #122364
I have an Amiga 3000 with a CD-ROM drive on the SCSI bus. Right now the CD-ROM is used only by a PC system which shares the SCSI bus. I don't yet have any Amiga format CDs. Is there any other software I would have to have before I can…
I finally figured that out. It's possible to use chip RAM (it's 16 bit in the A3000). However, it makes the GG very s l o w. Not worth it.
Vortex 386/Amiga mem
Message #120749
I am using a Golden Gate 386 board (since yesterday). It's in a A3000 with 6 mb memory running WB 2.04. Everything seems to work as described, except one thing. I can't get it to use Amiga memory as Extended Memory. Does anybody know about this?
#386 BB good deal?
Message #118345
I've been hearing that CBM's 386 BB is a good deal. Who has them and for how much? I have not seen any advertising for these lately.
Chinon HD floppy
Message #117034
I have a Chinon FZ-357 3.5" 1.44M floppy drive connected to an A2286 Bridgeboard. I am wondering if this drive can be used on the Amiga side, and if so, how the jumpers should be set. I will try it out when I get the time, I'm just wondering if…
Well, hang in there and let us know how it goes. Everyone I know out there seems to dry still. I hope that luck holds …
SoftLogik & the river
Message #60439
I'm hoping Soft-Logik Corp. is somewhere _above_ the water line right now. Let us know.
#PageLiner find
Message #60109
In PageLiner, I want to use Find and Replace to replace the fi ligature (^Cfi) with the letters fi. I can't figure out how to do this, although the manual states that "PageLiner can find any character, word or phrase in a text file." (p. 2.10). Redefining "any" does not…
I'm not on BIX and don't know about CATS, so I'd like it if someone sent it to me. Thanks.
DTXT specifications
Message #59760
Is there a spec file for the dtxt format anywhere that I could get it?
From reading the other messages, I get the impression that CBM is offering a A2286 -> A2386 upgrade. Somebody tell me about this. I have had the BB and Janus software since 1990, and have never heard a word about upgrades, or even who to ask.
#Vortex boards
Message #102099
I have been running a A2286 BridgeBoard inside an Amiga 3000. It has two big defects besides general slowness, (1) the bug that won't let Windows run and (2) it occupies 2 slot spaces (major problem with only 4 slots in the A3000.) I have a SCSI disk controller in…
#PageLiner problem
Message #56072
I'm trying to use PageLiner to edit DTXT hotlinked from a PGS document. If I copy a block and paste it repeatedly, PL hangs up as soon as the screen is supposed to scroll. If I mark a block that is long enough to scroll the screen, then try to…
#Paper Size in PGS
Message #56025
I am printing on 6.625" x 10" cards with a LaserJet 4M from PageStream 2.22, through PostScript.Printer 2.2.11. In PageStream, my page dimensions are set to 6.625" x 10" and Portrait. In "Configure Printer" I set the paper size at 6.625" x 10" and my print is offset about an…
#Wishes & stuff
Message #54398
YAWL BME wishes — Edit attributes of existing pictures (the things found on the "New Picture" requester). I frequently scan things with a video camera and DCTV, and output a 24 bit picture. If I'm going to use it in PageStream, I usually reduce it to 6 or 5 bit…
PostScript bug
Message #54376
The problem I had with PostScript Type 1 fonts produced by TypeSmith had an interesting solution. I upgraded my printer, replacing my old Texas Instruments MicroLaser with a HP LaserJet 4 (both with PostScript). All the characters that used to print filled when they were supposed to have holes in…
#Miscellaneous Wishes
Message #54111
Nice ideas: — IFF DTXT Import/Export drivers for PageStream (Yes, I know I can use Hotlinks. I just don't always want to) — IFF DTXT display filter for shell (like "type", but interprets the DTXT format) — Hotlink DR2D graphics Better yet: — Hotlink ArtExpression PostScript graphics — Open more…
#SL PFB files, Post
Message #53909
When I run post (v. 1.86; post.library 1.7), I set up the init.ps file to look through my font directories for PostScript Type 1 fonts. I include SoftLogik's PFB files that came with ArtExpression, because these (in theory) should give me the 35 fonts in Post that are assumed to…

#Special Format
Message #33855
Is there a program anywhere that will format just the empty space on a disk drive?
Well, that's funny. I'll take another look. I made a small font with the Garamond letter "A" repeated four times, with the two paths in all four possible direction combinations. That one worked as it's supposed to. Now maybe I accidentally failed to copy the new font over the old…
#TypeSmith problem
Message #53540
Problem with TypeSmith 1.0: I tried converting some Compugraphic fonts to PostScript Type 1. They were the Letter Gothic font from Workbench 2.0, and the Compugraphic Garamond fonts from PageStream 2.0. The conversions worked, for the most part, but in every case characters with composite paths did not work. When…
How much memory did you get at that price? And did you count the PostScript SIMM?
I hope by the time that's done, I need it.
Yes, tell me more. I will be interested in a LJ4 with PostScript and all the extra memory I can possibly afford …
I'm new to this thread. I want a LJ4 so bad I can taste it. At high resolution. Could you tell me where you are getting it and how much you're paying?
Thanx for the information. I assume that's distributed by Commodore?
Thanks, I'll do that.
SQL Servers?
Message #76254
Is there any database program for the Amiga that will work as a phone-in SQL server?
Amiga UNIX startup
Message #29893
I'm considering running UNIX on an Amiga 3000, and wondering what is available, what is probably coming, and what it costs these days.
Scanner questions
Message #76253
I have been doing monochrome scanning (and OCR) with the Golden Image hand scanner and Migraph TouchUp, and color with a video camera and DCTV (quality not so great for DTP, but a fast way to take pictures and publish them). I am considering getting the Epson flatbed scanner (ES-300C)…
Thanks. I have called BaudBandit.device "Bandit.device" so it's the same length as "serial.device". Some programs are having trouble with… serial.device. The last one I noted was TeleBase (TBASE.LZH in General Applications). It works if I edit it to use Bandit.device instead. Some other programs will still work with serial.device. It's…
BaudBandit/BackTalk
Message #75934
OK … As it stands now, I have BackTalk 1.55a, working through BaudBandit.device. It seems to work fine. The only problem is that it doesn't work with my serial.device, though ser: works with all other software. The interesting thing was that BackTalk 1.55a worked with serial.device the first time I…
serial.device was unchanged (!?). I am sure at this point that the bug is with BackTalk 1.55a
BaudBandit.device
Message #74072
I just downloaded and tried the BaudBandit.device. I am using BackTalk v. 1.55a on an A3000 under WB 2.04. When I attempted a download (using xprquickb.library) here on CIS, the program hung up. Eventually I got a "Software Failure" requester and rebooted. After rebooting, and even after a power-down, BackTalk…
BTW, one of my original questions was, where do I go for Janus updates?
Janus Versions
Message #74017
I am using Enforcer. This is an unpredictable, intermittent failure. Once it boots correctly, it keeps working.
Paint white in DCTV?
Message #22748
I find that I can't make a pure white (255 in R, G, B) in DCTV paint. I can set the color that way and paint with it, but after I save the file, it will come back as a 254 gray. That's a problem because I have been using…
Ooops … I forgot to put in spaces! So CIS reformatted that file for me. If you don't understand it, let me know.
I use Enforcer to handle the 68030 data cache.
PostScript bug
Message #45167
I'm using PageStream 2.2 on an Amiga 3000, with a TI MicroLaser PostScript printer. I was using PostScript driver 2.2.6. When I changed to 2.2.11, I found that my imported pictures printed differently. I am importing a 24-bit IFF file, in which I painted out some parts, so they are…
There is a certain PROBABILITY that it will boot correctly each time. I don't have a number to put on that. I have a batch file that reboots the BridgeBoard repeatedly until it works. I am running nothing unusual. I have a 25 MHz A3000 with 4 MB fast and…
On the PC side, AUTOEXEC.BAT ends with AWRITE PCBOOTED ENV:PCBOOTED Then on the Amiga side, I have a batch file (running under CSH, not EXECUTE) as follows: if -f env:pcbooted del env:pcbooted endif lab START echo Rebooting PC … PCHard sleep 50 if -nf env:pcbooted echo PC took too long!…
Amiga 3000, Workbench 2.04, no pseudo-drives.
#Janus Versions
Message #72122
My 2286 BridgeBoard frequently hangs up while booting. It appears that this happens after it executes CONFIG.SYS and before AUTOEXEC.BAT. It does this often enough that I made a special batch file to reboot it repeatedly until it works. Could my old software have something to do with it? I…
#71569-
Tektronix 4695
Message #72027
I'll consider selling one, but so far, I don't have one working, so, no idea what it will take and what the price should be. From what I have heard, I think the 4696 driver is supposed to work.
#22223-
Tektronix 4695
Message #22254
Thanks a lot! I'll let you know what happens. So far it looks like I have no "maintenance fluid" so I have to get that before anything will happen.
#MigraphOCR
Message #57907
I have been using Migraph OCR, with pretty good results. On decent printed or typed text, it can be significantly faster than re-typing. I am using version 1.08. The first version I got did nothing but crash, so this is a big improvement. System: Amiga 3000 with 4 mb fast,…
