Chuck, Thanks, I'm looking forward to seeing it. I might be able help on the return trip too (control out to VTRs).
Mike, The Dubner "Scene Stealer" does just what you asking for. You can e-mail Bob Dubner here at: 73247,2334. It is quite a complete product with lots of great software and I/O capability.
As for the 1084: No, you can't use it for your PC — it does make a fine video monitor (composite or Y /C). I've forgotten what the 1902 is at this point. If it is a multi-sync, then there's a good chance you can use it for VGA images.…
Have you checked out the Windows shareware available here on CIS? Often, I find just what I need here (or close to it). Go IBMFF
Even with plain VHS, it's possible to make a Y/C dub, thus preserving as much signal quality as possible. Both VHS and S-VHS are recorded with separate luminance and chrominance channels, it's just that the S-VHS luminance channel has wider luminance bandwidth. If you take the VHS tape and dub…
Each pot needs to be about 750k ohms max resistance; buy 1M ohm pots and add a fixed resistor in parallel. Connect them from the +5 volt supply pin to the appropriate X or Y signal pin. The software will discharge a capacitor to ground and count how long it…
Things are looking up!
There _are_ some uniquely Cessna parts that just have to be found in the salvage yards. I suspect Amigas will be kept flying the same way for awhile. Bruce
Alex, I don't know if you follow aviation at all, but every analogy you mentioned regard fuel and airports is very true today. We pilots do work together, though, sharing information in order to keep our planes flying in top working order (FAA regs, you know). It wasn't too long…
You all are right about keeping the Amiga running. As an example, those of use who fly single-engine Cessna aircraft are about in the same boat: they haven't been made in over a decade. Yet, we take care of what we have and keep in touch with the vendors of…
Addenda Electronics (408-372-6192) makes an RS232-422 adapter that lets you use your PC's COM port to control the high-end serial VTRs. Not at all expensive, either.
PreVue Technologies has a few application notes uploaded into the section 5 library. They are NOT a product of NewTek, though, just something we've put together. If someone wants to suggest some new subjects that need a write-up, we'd like to hear about it. Bruce Robertson PreVue Technologies Amiga Vendor…
That only works for the newer Toaster 4000 hardware, not the original Toaster.
On my JVC HRS-5000, I go into the MENU and turn it off. Actually, everything (on-screen messages) gets turned off together.
Rick, You have a problem. Either your hardware or software is broken slightly. You have also discovered how we come up with such cool effects: something breaks, it looks good, we call it a feature. If it's a hardware problem, a good wiggling and reseating might help out somewhat. Have…
Booboo, For the original Toaster, I have worked up a field mod (OK, hack) that will somewhat balance the two framestore DC levels. I've uploaded it to our PreVue section library; it's one of the ApNotes (the name escapes me, grab them all). While the ApNote is full of caveats…
Perhaps the power supply is not quite up to the task. That's the only thing that I can think of that would explain the two hour "cool down" time. You could test this somewhat by using some additional cooling to accelerate the cool down, like external fans or cold soaking…
Sure, why not? If you're wondering whether they will be around next year for service and support, it's hard to even guess.
I would think you best choices are the DPS IV (Digital Processing Systems model four) or the Digital Creations Kitchen Sync (two TBC's in one package).
My Mitsubishi AUM1371A can do: 15.6 to 35 kHz Horizontal scan rate 45 to 75 Hz Vertical scan rate 800 x 560 max. H/V resolution 0.31 dot pitch I don't know how much changed with the '1381. The monitor has been nothing short of excellent since 1987, considering the abuse…
Gee, I wonder if one of those 35mm slide scanners could be made to work . . .
Since we're talking about gray values, the I and Q (Inphase and Quadrature) signal are zero – no color at all. The only reason that black is at 7.5 IRE rather than 0 IRE (0 volts) is to hide the retrace lines on TV sets of decades gone by. The…
For thrid-party products like the BreadBoard, Toast Timer, Sync Strainer, Sync Trap, and DejaVue, visit us in the PreVue Technologies section. Bruce
I'm sure that, one way or another, it could be incorporated.
The 15-pin high-density connector pinout is: pin 1 Analog Red 2 Analog Green 3 Analog Blue 4 no connect 5 Ground (red return) 6 Ground (green return) 7 Ground (blue return) 8 Ground 9 no connect 10 Ground 11 Ground 12 no connect 13 H Sync 14 V Sync 15…
Gary, The Sync Strainer is a box that measures about 0.5 x 1.5 x 2.5 inches. It plugs right in to the 23-pin video port on A2000s and A4000s. It sells for $59.95. Bruce Robertson PreVue Technologies
Wayne, There is no board associated with the Sync Trap; only a plate and connector are located at the slot. Since the Toaster 4000 essentially blocks one slot, the Sync Trap can fit in adjacent to the Toaster in an Amiga 4000. Price is $29.95
Stew, Well, that's OK for now but next time you'll melt traces !! I, too, didn't have a fuse handy so I used a resistor (47 ohms, I think). This will limit the maximum current to 100mA during a short but still not drop much voltage when using most mice…
Sure, that should do it just fine.
Gary, Well, there's good news and there's bad news. First, the good news: yes, your monitor will work in your Amiga/Toaster system in all of the mentioned scan rates. Now, the bad news: the Amiga stops putting out H and V sync signals when in the genlock mode (ie- Toaster…
Stew, There's a fuse that provides power to the mice ports on the A2500s. That could well be blown. It's a pico fuse (about the size of a standard resistor) located just inside the case near to the mice ports. If you have a volt meter and a steady hand,…
I have serious doubts that you can use the Picasso with the Toaster. The Amiga needs to send a constant stream of control bits out the Amiga's RGB port in order for the Toaster to be controlled. Now if the Amiga can send duplicate screens to both its internal graphic…
Yes. Some ambidextrous users (PCs and Amigas) have a monitor switch so they can use the one VGA monitor on both machines in a time-sharing fashion.
PMFJI, but the delay is not measured in nanoseconds but in milliseconds. A full-frame TBC can easily add 33 milliseconds to your video signal. Then, should you use a Toaster digital effect that re-maps your video, another 2 frames (67 msec) are added. (Look for DV1, DV2, and your input…
No, not with the Sync Trap. PreVue Technologies does offer another product, the Toast Timer, that will allow full control of H and SC phasing. A product for two years now, the Toast Timer has a very wide adjustment range to accomodate all system needs, including the need to time…
The 3000s display VGA video all the time, whether the software THINKS it's making NTSC Hi-Res or Productivity. The de-interlacer hardware doubles the frame rate and line frequency.
OK, if we're REALLY being precise, NTSC video is 29.97002998 fps or 59.94005996 fields/sec. If anyone's interested in the derivation, I'll post it. (An even the above numbers are rounded off; sorry.)
I'll have to disagree with you on this one. As I understand it, the A2000 WILL generate the requisite 31.4kHz horizontal scan rate. I also believe that it's a progressive (non-interlace) display. The A3000's DO have a very nice de-interlacer built in that is perfect for Toaster users who are…
The A2000 has some higher scan modes (ie- "productivity") that are the same as VGA. You're stuck, though, trying to make the selection without a low scan rate monitor with which to see what you're doing! If you can get some simple monitor (or a TV with A/V switching), you…
I doubt it. If the 1080 is just an earlier version of the 1084, it's a fixed scan rate monitor. The scan rate is 15.7 kHz (horizontal), the same as NTSC (American) TV and video. The old CGA computer standard used 15.7 kHz, but that is pretty much obsolete. The…
Chris, What are you trying to do when this bleeding occurs? Are you trying to key, say, some CG key page you just loaded (and the VT4000 logo just happens to be in the other frame buffer)? The VT4000 logo itself doesn't have any alpha/key source information associated with it.…
Any direct camera feeds don't need to be time base corrected, only videotape feeds. The new Toasters fit right into the A3000, but the older, original Toaster hardware requires some hacking (literally).
PMFJI, but RS422 uses two wires in each direction. With ground, a minimal connection is five wires: Tx+, Tx-, Rx+, Rx-, and Ground. The serial data rate is indeed standardized at 38.4 kBaud.

PreVue Technologies announce another addition to their product line of Video Toaster accessories. Named the Sync Trap, it adds an auxiliary BNC through which a house reference signal can be supplied to the Toaster without tying up Input 1. With the Sync Trap, all four Toaster inputs can be used…
Raymond, If you have an RS422 card already, you merely need to make up a custom cable that ties it to the VTR. You can pretty much bet that the cable will NOT be a pin-for-pin cable. Connect the card's transmit plus (Tx+) to the VTR's receive plus (Rx+), and…
Yes, the Sync Strainer is backward compatible with the -01 adapter. It will drive the H and V sync lines to the satisfaction of any RGB monitor. IF the RGB monitor is capable of operating at a horizontal rate of 15.7 kHz, then the genlock modes are supported. We're finding…

I hope you and Dan Wolf can work something out. I'm glad the vertical bar fix worked for you. Bruce
Dan, Commodore's "-01" adapter uses that 'HCT08 to buffer the H and V sync lines, something the Sync Strainer does anyway. The -01 is fine until you try to run the Toaster (or any genlock), at which time the H and V sync lines are used the gen-lock function. This…
Dan, Both you and Avid Media Group should take a bow for a job well done. The developers conference and Expo went quite well for all involved, better than many of us expected. I agree, Ann Pulley did a great job; you wouldn't have guessed this was her first effort…
