#MAX ? Comdex demo
29 messages in this thread
Well I just got back from Comdex and was eagerly looking forward to seeing the
MAX in operation. Unfortunately, I was only able to get a demo of the
operational software showing the file handling capability and the editing
features. I went back on all three days to see it in operation but all I got
was excuses about still being in beta and still a little buggy. When I
pressured the guy to demo it actually running I saw the same old rollercoaster
file for 15 seconds and then it switched to another glob 3DS sample file and
after 3-5 seconds it crashed the system back to the dos prompt. After
rebooting the system and starting up again it ran for about 5 seconds and then
the system locked up. I took a very close look for artifacts and what I saw was
very comparable to the PAR in aliasing and pixelization in the busy areas of
the picture. Apologies were made and I was told it may be out later on in the
summer after some of the "SCSI interface" bugs are worked out. He also said
that there will only be one initial drive/controller that will be certified
because it is quite sensitive to drive/controller performance.
I saw the targa 2000 in operation at the Adobe premier booth and it sure ran
great. Some artifacting, more pixelization than the MAX, but the picture
looked real good. They had simultaneous SVGA and NTSC playback. The picture
was 640X480 24 bit. There was simultaneous sound and video being played back
from the 1.8 G. hard drive.
Don,
You should speak with John T. about the MAX. I'm don't want to take sides on
this issue. <g> I'm very happy with the PAR but I'd like to see some software
enhancements. I'd like to be able to create a script file like Inscriber. And I
can definitely see advantages to both systems. One approach can't do it all
IMO. I love the fact that the framebuffer is built in on the PAR, but this
might be considered a drawback to some depending on their application. It
really just depends. For me the PAR works great. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it
again.
Actually I think they should hire John T. to demo the unit. He's gotten very
good results with his Beta System. Write rates of 4.5 at a resolution of
720×486. That Barracuda drive is pretty impressive.
re: The Targa 2000. I see this as a good system for game testing and business
presentations. I can't see any need for it personally however. I wouldn't mind
seeing the PAR with an Audio option board with a seperate drive. But I think
you're pushing too much data for both.
I bet Comdex was pretty interesting. Video people wandering around Comdex.
That's pretty funny. <g> About as curious as Computer people walking around
NAB. <g>
So how was the battle raging for the P5 crowd? I'm really partial to the DEC
Alpha series myself. The Wall Street Journal keeps saying that DEC is way over
extened, which makes me nervous. Sounds like they're betting the bank on the
AXP's. IBM is putting its weight, (what it has left) behind the PowerPC as is
Apple. I really wonder about the processor and motherboard design battle, and
how its all going to shake down. Personally I think I'll go with the DX-4
provided it works as advertised. But if 3DS is going to be optimised for the
Pentium… well you know… its never simple.<g> I used to feel like I had a
handle on it, but things are changing so fast now and pricing is so
competitive. Maybe that's it, but creating confusion they figure they can get
more for their product. Wrong!
I had a high school friend from the bay area call up and ask how prices are
down here, as he was going to be stopping in L.A. and he'd heard prices were
better. I thought geez, don't make a special trip or anything. 🙂
BTW did you see anything resembling a thin screen SVGA that you could hook into
a standard SVGA slot like a regular monitor, similar to a notebook monitor but
seperate. I could really use one if it isn't too pricey.

>>Actually I think they should hire John T. to demo the unit. He's

Right about that! The demo they had certainly didn't do the
technology any justice. Its a good thing DPS was not present with
the PAR or Matrox would have been embarrased.
The big deal at the show was the Power PC but at this point in time it
was more of a collection of fancy marketing phrases than actual
impressive demos. Words like "power" and multi platform
compatibility seem to impress some more than reality. <g>
MS chicago was shown at the show but I was disappointed in that as
well. Most of the demo was geared to a new way to launch apps in
windows with a start button. Pentium 90 was all over and running
flawlessly. DEC alpha was just a repeat of last year's demo and is
still waiting on NT to come of age. The DX4 looks the most promising
for me but it will require new MB's or an adapter for the lower
voltage. Maybe Intel will surprise us with a 5V version of the DX4.
Or, better yet the p24T, finally.
The biggest surprises of the show were the mergers. Aldus being
bought up by Adobe. Wordperfect with Novell. Aldus was not even at
the show and the Adobe people were not saying much. Wordperfect had
the biggest presentation to announce the Novell-WP marriage. Corel
was also not present.
In summary, I would tag this years show as "MORE OF THE SAME" more of
the same hardware, software, and vaporware. More vendors were taking
orders now for vaporware than in years before. Scarry!
Looking forward to SIGGRAPH. Hoping this show will be more reality.
>> Its a good thing DPS was not present … Matrox would have been embarrased.
<<
That would have been worth the price of admission! }:-0
That is one thing that has really been teeing me off, is that they
haven't got their act together. Its sloppy and there is no excuse. I
know its going to be a good product when there finished with it, but
come on guys lets get professional! That impression that they left
you with really disturbs me, and I resent the B.S. involved, as I'm
sure you do too.
>> The big deal at the show was the Power PC… <<
So far I'm not impressed. I don't like the name or the implication,
and it makes me wonder if its not just a lot of marketing hype. The
American obsession with Power blatantly exploited. I like the name
DEC ALPHA or AXP, those are cool. <g> "Power PC" sounds like a bunch
of pin-stripes on Pogo sticks. (Yes I'm ranting but what the heck…)
I looked up to read exactly what you said just paraphrased differently. <g> We
concur to a T.
>> More vendors were taking orders now for vaporware than in years before.
I can believe it, nobody knows what's going to fly and in the uncertain market
nobody wants to take a chance. "Scarry" is a good word for it.
>> Looking forward to Siggraph. Hoping this show will be more reality. <<
Ironic, isn't it, that the ulitimate in fantasy would be financially more
grounded. Sign of the times. <g>
Thanks for the rundown. As usual very cogent.
Names: What's in a name? I suppose you don't like the name "Pentium"
either. Well, neither do I.
One other thing I forgot to tell you about Comdex– For the first time
at Comdex I saw "adult" CD-ROMS being demoed on monitors with nothing
censored. I made a bet with my partner that on Tuesday these would
all be shut down. I lost! One writer in the Comdex daily wrote
"We've finnally matured as an industry with even pornography and sex
used to sell products at Comdex" The CD-ROM porn queens were present
to sign autographs too. Sign of the times.
No, I'm not particularly fond of the name "Pentium" and names like
that create an aura and a life of their own, which is usually not
very positive. Alot of people react to the name "Porsche" in the same
way. It has an air about it, which undermines the quality of the car.
So "a rose by any other name…" <g>
The Adult CD-ROM thing is beyond me. If we start seeing stuff like
that at Siggraph or NAB I guess we can conclude that our business has
finally matured. <g>
Re: porn CDs at Comdex:
Uggh. I hope if that sort of thing spills to Siggraph that there will be a
protest. Where porn CDs loom, Joe the Porn Consumer cannot be far behind,
wielding his greasy dollars in pudgy fingers.
Siggraph has always had a lot of class. I hope they keep it that way.
Michele
>> I hope if that sort of thing spills to Siggraph that there will be a
protest. <<
So do I, and being as vocal about certain things as I am, you can count on me
to register a protest. <g> <- There's a grin there but I'm serious. Enough is
enough. I would like to think that the kind of people who attend Siggraph have
more imagination and apply it to more worthwhile endeavours and/or
entertainment. 3 or 4 years ago a certain animation software vendor brought a
buxom female mesh model to display at the convention, and there was mixed
reaction, but the feeling of the vendor was to discontinue displaying the model
as there were women there who took offense. In many cases I would say that
while many men might not approve they wouldn't speak up to say so, as it would
appear that they are less than "manly" in doing so. I think women will have to
speak up when trends like this start, and voice their opposition. It would also
be easy to get national press on an issue like this.
I hope that you don't take this as a shirking of responsibility on the part of
men in not speaking up, as I for one would. But I also think that without the
support of women, no one is going to take the issue seriously.
Its just another case of humanity denegrading humanity, which hurts us all. And
I disagree when people make the claim its not hurting anybody. Its hurting the
collective conscious, and denegrating our self esteem as people.
I hadn't intended to get into it, but I'm glad you spoke up, and should the
occassion arise, I will stand with you on this issue.
Regards,
-JE
While I agree that seeing this type of product being displayed at
Comdex/windows world was quite a shock, especially at the open graphic demos of
the content. I also feel that this is a part of the whole computer industry
and was represented in proper proportion. As far as the male/female thing is
concerned I disagree with you totally for this reason. I believe that if it
were men exploiting women then you'd be right but in the cases of these vendors
they were being run, managed and entrepreneured by women, not men. If anything
this was a case of women denegrating men and women as both sexes were
represented in the collection of CDs displayed. My own opinion is that I find
nothing wrong with the product, the business (in theory), nor the people that
wish to be involved in this aspect of the industry. I do find the display of
the product in open public in poor taste at the Comdex show and blame the
Comdex for the way it was displayed. I've recently taken on some editing jobs
for adult content video with the understanding that these products are only to
be shown to those that want to see them. I, too, would be very vocal and
protest if these products were openly displayed in public as the Comdex event
even though they are far less risque than most of what we see on even network
TV today. I'm a firm believer in free market but one should not have
embarrassing products shoved in his face unless he asked for it.
Don you suprise me.
>> I also feel that this is a part of the whole computer industry and was
represented in proper proportion. <<
So does this mean that at a pharmacuetical convention, there should be an area
set aside for home production of cocaine? Or that at NAB there should be an
area set aside for Child pornography?
>> As far as the male/female thing is concerned I disagree with you totally for
this reason. I believe that if it were men exploiting women then you'd be right
but in the cases of these vendors they were being run, managed and
entrepreneured by women, not men. <<
Your argument is actually self defeating. Men exploiting women or women
exploiting women, it makes no difference. Its still exploitation. We fought a
civil war over men exploiting men. And while I think that there were many
Southern Gentlemen who took good care of their slaves, it doesn't justify the
practice. Even in South Africa where it wasn't a question of slavery but of
Apartheid, the policy of the U.S. was to stand against it and as a result the
pratice was finally dismantled. It comes down to human dignity and opportunity
which if not respected leads to the purges of Stalinist Russia or the massacres
of the Kamer Rouge in Cambodia, or the Holocaust in Nazi Germany.
>> If anything this was a case of women degenerating men and women as both
sexes were represented in the collection of CD's displayed. <<
O.K. so if this is the case why would you want to see this practice condoned or
continued?
I believe in the general concept of a free market system too, but I think
(hope) you'd agree that there are many things that I wouldn't want to see
legalized in the interest of "a free" market. In fact there are many areas in
which we do not have a free market, like weapons, certain kinds of technology
and drugs to name a few.
Just because some women are willing to sell their bodies on street corners or
for CD ROM titles doesn't mean its a victimless crime. Typically these women
suffer from low self esteem and a troubled upbringing, and what this practice
does is exploit their low self esteem. And with women just like with men, there
are certain people who will for a variety of reasons take advantage and exploit
these people. The practice should not be condoned as it denegrates our
collective value and self perception. Which can ultimately lead to
dictarorships, purges and massacres. I'm am amazed and astounded by how fast
humanity can degenerate into anarchy, as witnessed in Bosnia with people that
had lived side by side in relative peace. If the underpinnings of human value
are compromised this becomes the end result. This is not a direct correlation
to the production and manufacture of CD ROM's with explicit graphic content but
is indicative of the delicate balance of the respect for our own humanity.
Which, instead of exploitation, requires sensitive nuturing as history shows us
how quickly our self perception can be self defeating. And as people who work
in Media, it our social responsibility to stand against this exploitation. Yes
I know its an uphill battle, and its tough to make a living in Video/Animation
as an independent without succuming to the temptation to take advantage of a
market which is in high demand, but I for one will hold the line and hope that
along with other's we can make a difference.

Your message regarding computer erotica includes references to:
Home production of cocaine Child pornography
Civil war Slavery
Apartheid Stalinist Russia
The Kamer Rouge The Holocaust
Nazi Germany Low self esteem
Dictatorships Purges
Massacres Anarchy
Bosnia
Although there is a lot of thread drift here, this is getting out of hand.
If you want to state your feelings on computer erotica, that's certainly fine.
If you want to tell one of the other members how their opinions are wrong, it
is better to take it to email, or the ISSUES forum.
Evan
Consenting adult sex is a far cry from illegal drug manufacture or child
molestation, John. I'm surprised at you for making this comparison. While it
is true that the same technology is used for manufacturing drugs as is
manufacturing illegal drugs I don't see the connection you seem to in the adult
nudity CD-ROM business. If there were illegal activity like those you used as
an example then I'm sure the operations would be shut down immediately suspects
arrested, etc. My concern was just that the display of this product was
inappropriate for the conduct of a show like Comdex. Some will disagree with
me on this. You can pick any computer mag these days and see advertising of
these products and that's why my comment that representation of this portion of
the legal industry was proportionately represented. What do you think about a
company advertising dongle busters? Let's say they even had a booth across the
isle from the SPA? Now that would be interesting! (I'm beginning to ramble)
>>O.K. so if this is the case why would you want to see this practice condoned
or continued?
I would like to see this practice at shows like Comdex discontinued. But, I do
not wish to support movements to outlaw any industry that attempts to operate
in a legal fassion to the letter of the law. I also believe that the concept
that the sole mode of operations of this industry is to exploit lack of human
dignity is very much debatable. Frankly I am more concerned with the graphic
violence in game software than about some beautiful lady posing in satin and
lace. However, the public should not have either shoved in his face while
attending Comdex. Relating commercial nudity art forms to politics and
economic philosophy is a bit far fetched but I would agree that a proliferation
and obsession with this type of art is an indicator of moral decay in any
society. Noticed I used obsession, not appreciation.
You keep mentioning NAB sanctity. Well I've got news for you Captain Video!
<G> When NAB was in Atlanta a few years ago there was far more sex in selling
products than even today at Comdex. When was the last time you watched TV?
1955? I know how this animation career robs us TV time but really now. TV
beats Playboy Mag. for nudity anymore.
Thanks! I appreciate the honesty of your answer.
On the other side, we women are sometimes afraid to speak up because others
will think we're "no fun", "spoilsports" and "prissies". Hey, I like to jump
on the bar and wail "Bad to the Bone" during Karaoke as much as the next gal
<g> but there is a line to be drawn.
In my work I have rarely had to make a stand. Most of the people I've met at
shows and through work seem to be pretty cool. I often get asked "What's it
like to be a female in a male-dominated industry?' There's the odd
troublemaker but you get that in any other line of work. And when there has
been some creepy person giving me a hard time I have had a lot of support from
the other persons around, who were mostly men. (Once I was working late at
night on a rush project, alone with a client, who was married with 2 kids. He
made a massive pass at me — I was too naive to see it coming and was so
overwhelmed with surprise that I had difficulty reacting the way I would now
(SLAP!). I tearfully told my boss about it the next day. Even though the job
was worth a lot of money he immediately called the client, and to my surprise,
cancelled the job and refunded his money, and gave him an earful besides. "How
dare you take advantage of this nice young girl!" I was so naive, if my boss
had gone the other way and said "Of course, you brought it on yourself," it
would have been very confusing and bad for me.)
In the few times I've had to speak up for myself ("Please don't stroke my hair,
I'm trying to work, and besides I think you are creepy") I've always had the
support of the male persons around me, but also they've waited to see my
reaction and took a cue from that. For example, if I had allowed the
aforementioned hair-stroking creep to continue without making a comment they
would've figured I liked it and left it at that.
I think you're right, the women in the industry will have to speak up, but the
men will probably support them if they make a stand.
This industry (3D Studio, and graphics in general) seems to be populated with
people who are more interested in creating something beautiful rather than
seeing if they can make a 3D penis. I hope this trend keeps up. I would hate
to see our happy little circle get gross and ugly. Right now it feels like
we're a bunch of eight-year-olds dancing around the maypole, laughing and
making pictures. I would hate to see a child molester get a hold of us.
Michele
Michele,
>> I think you're right, the women in the industry will have to speak up, but
the men will probably support them if they make a stand. <<
It may be even more complicated than that. As Don mentioned, it was women
promoting and producing these CD's. Which means that the battle will be fought
not men against women but women and men against women and men. But I do feel
that if women don't speak up it will continue unabated. It is interesting to
watch as women continue to enter the "male dominated" arena, that of course
they approach it all in the same way men do, ie: female producers exploiting
females the way some men did when it was their exclusive domain.
I personally find the "battle of the sexes" abhorent and I think that it will
be even more important that thinking men and women stand together to fight
against any kind of exploitation whether it be perpetuated against women or
men.
And while my views may be considered idealistic, ie: there will always be
exploitation, I think that if society takes a position of low tolerance for it,
that it can be minimized, which would at least discourage displaying graphic
material on CD ROM's at Comdex.
Karl Marx predicted that capitalism would lead to decadence and debauchery and
while he was wrong about many things he certainly seemed to understand the
predisposition of capitalism toward that. The fact that capitalism has won out
over communism doesn't mean we can ignore the inherent evils of either system.
And the reason I mention this is that I see the profit motive driving the
marketing of CD ROM's of graphic exploitive content.
>> Right now it feels like we're a bunch of eight-year-olds dancing around the
maypole… <<
Well you certainly don't sound like an "eight year old" but I get what you're
saying. <g>
My comment to Don to which you responded, was that in fact I think that NAB and
probably Siggraph are mature industries. I know that Broadcast is because its
considered the "Fifth Estate". My experience in this industry has been through
the revolution caused by cable. During my study at Univerisity, one of my
courses was on Media and Social Responsibility. At the time the Networks were
in control and had social guidelines with regard to content and substance of
programming. They took it upon themselves to develope these guidelines for two
reasons. One was because the FCC licensed the "public" airwaves and as such the
FCC felt Broadcast had a social responsibility to the public. The other reason
was that they wanted to develope credibility with the public, much as the
"Fourth Estate" has enjoyed. With the advent of cable this view of social
responsibility has radically changed. The point here being, that as a result
the Networks now have to compete with the socially irresponsible programming
now being propagated on cable, and we are now witnessing the effect.
So while "Broadcast" and its event of the year, NAB has been restrained, in
coming years it is quite possible that it will follow suit with content of the
nature displayed at Comdex. I think its going to be up to the industry to
determine its own standards and that I hope that it will choose not to follow
suit, but money and ratings are a powerful motivator and if the industry
doesn't take a stand we'll be seeing more exploitive graphic content. And
Siggraph will follow as a logical extension and representative of Broadcast,
especially as "character animation" becomes more prevalent. Looking at the
future as depicted in many new shows, human value is portrayed as there for the
purchasing, not a very optimistic portent of things to come. A trend I hope the
public will reject.
There is hope as shows like Star Trek TNG are quite popular which explore and
develop the concept of human value and dignity. It will be interesting to see
how the storyline of "Voyager" develops, whether it will follow "Deep Space
Nine" and the "everything can be bought" philosophy or will follow TNG
tradition. I have a fascination with Television as I see it as a reflection of
the values of the masses, either by design or desire. Stay tuned… <g>

There is a celebration of D-Day about to happen. I take it as a celebration
of victory of freedom over a vicious dictatorial system. I also am willing to
defend the right of others to believe and act as they choose within legal
limitations. But I now feel that some people feel that it is my duty to respect
and defend their rights but they need not reciprocate and, indeed, feel that it
is their duty to impose their beliefs on me, and others (for our own good,
naturally). To me that looks, smells, and feels like a potential dictatorship.
And the first thing that one should recall about dictatorships is that nice
guys end up dead. Dictators are guys like Stalin, Hitler, Kernal KaDaffy of
Libya and that guy in Uganda.
If some people want to have some fun, and they are fully consenting adults,
that is their business even if sex is part of their fun. If you feel it is
degrading (or whatever), then don't you do it. I call that freedom of choice.
Albert:
Personally, I'm tired of the "personal rights" spiel that everybody goes on
about. Lots of misunderstandings.. but here goes-
Since I feel you misunderstand my expressed values (my one sentence..), I'll
clarify. (short version <g>)
Pornography will never go away, whether or not I approve of it or not. And I
don't expect it to. There are too many persons like yourself (or those of
which you are concerned about) who desire it. That's fine.
The problem I have is when it is displayed in public. This can be at a
computer convention, or in the back of public magazines like PC Mag, etc. It's
just not appropriate. Sure, they may not be fully explicit, and may be as
graphic as some CableTV channels- but I have a problem with it there as well.
(different issue) Also, one can display sensuality without being graphic, and
explicit.
It all boils down to keeping it out of the mainstream. Not everybody wants it,
so don't flaunt it in front of us. If one want's it, then he can look for it.
Pornography has never been hard to find.
JNJ
BTW- if I was Hitler, or the like, I'd be blowing up the CD developers places,
and publicly assaulting them in their booths.. not so. Please keep your
"Anti-American" words aimed at someone else. I grew up in the Army, and I know
what America is all about. Thank you.
Thanks for the show "review", Don!

Sounds like the people doing the demoing were poorly prepared,
although I agree that the beta software is buggy and needs fixing.
I have a MAX, and recorded 2700 frames yesterday with no hitch except
one which relates to on-the-fly Q factoring with a particular set of
images. I have reported this – it seems to be a regression bug from
a few weeks ago.
I think the output is excellent, and I find it hard to believe that a
system getting 3.5-3.8 megs per second could have the same level jpeg
compression as a system getting 4.6-4.8 write times, and 5.6-5.9 read
times – which is what I'm getting. It is possible that the MAX
software is not yet fully optimized, and that the q-factoring is
conservative at this time… I really don't know for sure.
I also recorded some live images, but the look I want for the peice is
grainy and black and white, so I chose appropriate video material.
I'll do other live recording later to see how good the quality is.
The other bug in the software is that it won't run with my CD-ROM and
Exabyte plugged in, but supposedly there's a fix on the way for that.
John Tissavary (LUNA cie)
I knew you had just received the MAX but did not know it was only beta
system. They told me that. I was really disappointed because I
wanted to see what the next level of this technology could do as I'm
pretty happy with the results I'm getting with the PAR out to
broadcast. When you get your MAX working to your expectations I
would like to see some output. How about I record some 3DS sample
files on beta SP and send you the tape. Do you have beta SP? If not
what format do you have in house? I've got just about everything here
below beta SP. You could record some of your stuff (same sample
files) for comparison. Since you don't have a PAR it might be an
interesting benchmark for you to use. I could also digitize some
beta SP footage to the PAR as well.
I'll take you up on a comparison, but I don't have a BetaSP deck in
house. I'll be arranging for one to show up here for a day or two,
so I'll let you know when that is, and we can do some comparisons.
I suggested beta SP because that's the top of the line here. <g> If
you think another format would be easier for both of us and work let
me know. I don't know what decks you have. Regarding scheduling:
I'll just go ahead and get some stuff into the queue here because
otherwise I'll just not get to it given the current schedule this
month (June).
Did you see the Targa 2000 running at PAL res?
BTW, we shouldn't forget that the Targa 2000 is also a highend display board.
If they could get a real Premiere on top of it, I think that this will be the
board for me.
ana /krazy images
Ana: I thought of you when I saw the targa 2000 at the adobe booth running
Premier. I was really impressed. They had the edited program running live in
a window as well as on the NTSC monitor. I did not see the system running PAL
as this would be rather difficult without special equipment. The hardware was
a pentium 90 machine using an outboard barracuda drive. The quality was
superb. Very little artifacting noticeable. The video was sourced from
betacam SP. The effects were as good as my Fast Video Machine.
Hey, thanks for the thoughts <g> I am glad to see that you like the board.
Coming from you, that's a guaranty 🙂 Premiere for Windows (and VFW) is stupid
when compared to the Mac counterpart (and Quicktime). I have asked Truevision
to push Adobe to make a real port of the Mac version to Windows. Maybe for
Chicago, who knows. At the moment, it seems that VFW is not ready for it.
However, the Targa 2000 is another story. If they get a real Premiere for the
Targa 2000 and a PCI version of the board, they will have a check with my
signature 🙂
