AutoCAD and OS/2
Message #132257
Richard — Would it be possible to _talk_ to you about OS/2 and ACAD? If you could either post your phone number in the forum, or drop me a note, I'd greatly appreciate the opportunity to ask a few questions in real time. Thanks! — Roger
Mike, Actually, the link to DOS 5 may not be there. I am again experiencing the same reboot problem on another workstation that is running DOS 4.01. Same kind of thing, computer either locks up on exit from AutoCAD or reboots. After a couple of re-installs and lots of tweeking,…
Bill – We are considering adding options to a future release which will let you configure AutoCAD's file safety features, like the EXPERT system variable. Logic dictates that the spacer files reside in the same directory where the DWG came from, because that's where the DWG will go when you're…
New features in the Release 11 of AutoCAD for the Macintosh (ca. Dec 91): Advanced Modeling Extensions (AME) — AME gives AutoCAD the ability to build and analyze complex three-dimensional solid models. (Requires System 7 and 16Mb of RAM, part of which can be virtual.) New user interface — The…
Mike – As Duff says, we haven't made any plans regarding OS/2 2.0. As for the SHELL error, you may want to report it to IBM so that they can investigate it.
John, So far no one has provided me with any hard numbers on Sun vs Dos. Everyone I have talked to says that Sun is faster but they have only described the differences in general terms. I deem regen time and plotting delays as important. Also overall effiency is very…

I have a Sun 386i/250 and a Sparc1 running Acad 10. As I understand it release 11 for SunOS 4.0.2 is the last for the 386i and was shipped in sunview with a patch to be shipped in the future for Open Windows. However, you might want to address a…

Once again my questions have been answered quickly. I thank you very much, I will try this soon. It's really incredible how I get answers to my questions much faster this way, as opposed to trying to track down my support people. Once again, many thanks! Dwayne
AutoCAD release 10 is currently available for OS/2 1.x. No announcement has been made for support on this OS past release 10. -Mike
The whole idea of the "placer" (perhaps spacer files is the correct term) files to for them to reside where ever the drawing came from, be it net or local. You can get around this and relocate the files locally using the prototype drawing option. For example, start a new…
Thanx for the info. The common thread between these problems seems to be AutoCAD R11386c2, MS-DOS 5.0 and ATI VGA Wonder cards. Sounds like it may be a problem with the bios memory location or something. I'll look into these problems further and let you guys know what I find.…
Bill: No can do – the "spacer" files are the ones that assure you that you have enough room left to save your current drawing. You do want to be able to do that, dont you? Larry
Michael – As far as I know, AutoCAD R11 for the Sun comes with drivers for both SunView and OpenWindows. You are correct in that future versions may be for OpenWindows only, as that is the only environment that Sun will be supporting.

Mr. Kurland, Reference to your message of the availability of AutoCad Release 11 for the Sparc and the 386i possible release has been available for serval months. I think you are referring to my understanding that AutoCad Release 11 is not available for Sunview only Open Windows. What my understanding…
#Is there an AC for OS/2
Message #34265
Is there an Autocad for OS/2? Several of our engineers would like to know. Can they run Autocad for Windows under OS/2? What is needed to run AutoCad in an OS/2 environment (or would you even want to??) We are currently using OS/2 1.3.
ACAD & LogicalConnection
Message #34263
Does anyone else use Logical Connections (a printer/plotter sharing product until recently supported by Fifth Generation) with more than one ACAD station? I do, and wish to compare notes.
Michael – Autodesk has not yet made a decision concerning an AutoCAD update for OS/2 2.0.
The objection is not related to disk space; on a network drive, there should be plenty. However, when more than one user is working on drawing files in the same directory, any files that have ANY possibility, no matter how remote, of having the same names is no good at…

Mike, We have a several labs running AutoCAD, and one of them is an AST 386/33Mhz lab. Out of the seventeen computers in the room, two of them occasionally 'Hang' when exiting AutoCAD R11/386C2. Our machines use ATI VGA Wonder cards as well. Mark Kurdi Sheridan College (ATC)

Carl, I have run several programs that use Pharlap 4.0 under OS/2 2.0 6.177 without any problems. Do you know if there is a planned OS/2 2.0 update of AutoCAD for OS/2 ? I have the release 10 version for OS/2 1.X, but there is a bug trying to execute…
Michael – Eh? AutoCAD R11 for the Sparc (and 386i, I believe) has been available for several months.
Mark, I am still on AutoCad Release 10 on a Sun 386i with Sunview unitl Release 11 comes then it is Open Windows on a Sun IPC. The default setting for text under Sunview sure is easy to change, I wish it was the same for Open Windows. Have you…
AutoCAD's own memory settings shouldn't make any difference. It's a very well-behaved program. You might try getting the latest shell (3.22, I believe, from DOSUP4.ZIP in NDD) and use it. You mention that you have ATTACH and MAP in AUTOEXEC.BAT. Is there a particular reason why you aren't using LOGIN…
Thanks, Kevin for the confirmation of the problem. I moved the ADI driver to 7C and left the Novell at 7A and so far everything appears to be o.k.
Tim: Looks to me like you have QEMM installed improperly. Ditch it and see if the problem goes away immediately… if it does, then download QINST.DOC from DL6 and read it… My guess is that QEMM isn't aware of what portion of upper ram that your network/and or hard drive…
John – Ya got me… I doubt whether we know many details at all about what the Windows NT version will support, but perhaps Robert Wenig would have something to contribute here…
Greg – I'm hoping that someone who knows the real scoop will jump in here, but if the SCO Unix version of R11 isn't available already, it will be shortly.
Jeff: I am not qualified to answer, but I encourage those Autodeskers who have the answers to state them. No point in keeping secrets, I would rather you knew, and decided to obtain the product. Malcolm

I was hoping that someone could help me with a couple of problems that I am having. My computer is a 386-40 with 4mb ram, 330mb ESDI hard drive, a 1024×768 monitor, and a Paradise 512k 1024 video card. I am running DOS 5.0, QEMM 5.1, AutoCAD version 10c2, on…
The files in question are placer files; they are designed to grow as the drawing grows to ensure that you always have room to save your drawing. The inital release of R11 did not have these files and you could get into a situation where you could not save anything.…
#ACAD R11C2 NETWORK BUG
Message #34006

Diane, see if your network cards are using interrupt 2,3, or 4. If it's 3 or 4 they may be conflicting with your digitizer on COM1 (irq 4) or COM2 (irq3). If set for irq 2, there are a handfule of machines that will choke. Try using irq 5 (the…
Ken, Thanks for your ideas. Here's the latest: netx.com v3.02 is being used on all our stations. No memory managers are used. I'm not a AutoCAD user myself, so about memory-related environment variables, I'm assuming those would be set in a bat file prior to running the acad command. I've…
Michael, I don't know if this will help, but we are using acad10 on sunview. I know that under the rootmenu you can change your sunview defaults thru the defaults choice. Once you find the default settings there are choices for sunview, text editor etc… at the fonts choice for…

Greg – AutoCAD Release 11 for SCO Unix is in the works. Actually, I haven't been keeping careful track; it may be available now. I'm not sure if we've decided to support SCO beyond R11, though, since AutoCAD sales on XENIX have been far below our other platforms. Other possibilities…

Greg: Well, David Gari is pretty knowledgeable on the subject when it comes to the Phar Lap Dos extender features and AutoCAD's use of extended or expanded memory. This is the most important aspect of a 386 version installtion. There isn't much you can do to improve upon a no…

Message #33796
(To anyone at AutoDesk) A Curious Question: My ACAD/Mac R10 users would like to know if you are willing to leak any new features to be found in ACAD/Mac R11. Their most frequent question is whether they will be able to drag-and-type to change a text substring, change fonts from…
