Gary: Yes, a DXF of a site plan is a great place to start study models! If you are using AutoCAD, you'll want something like QuickSurf to do reduction of the model to make the size manageable. Greg Pyros
#Site model ala quick
Message #94436
Greg, Is there a way to use a dxf of a cleaned up site plan as a platform to add primitives in the 3d editor to create rough study models? What I want to do is provide design input but future views. I've brought flat text into the editor before…
Gus, thanks for your help! Jack
This is a DOS 5.0 bug. You have "too much" memory free (that's a first). You probably have everything loaded high and lots of free memory down below. In DOS 5.0, if a "packed" file (you shouldn't concern about packed or unpacked as that's a program generation option) is loaded…
#Chaos Run Problems
Message #85049
I recently installed a copy of Chaos I purchased awhile on my son's new computer. The installation seemed to complete ok, but whenever we try to run anything we get a "Packed file is corrupt" message. Any ideas on what's going wrong? Thanks in advance for your help. Jack Davis
Corel4 upgrade
Message #76116
Thanks! You are right. I never gave it a second thought, just followed the masses. (Apparently, Corel Customer Service is handling it this way, there are dozens of requests like mine, that's how I determined what to do.) |

Heat Exchanger Programs
Message #73071
I'm looking for a program that will do fin and tube heat exchanger calculations. It would be nice if the program could be used with Acad R12 but thats not neccesery. If any one knows of such a program please give me call. Thanks, Bob Bald
Your menu selection will be greyed out if there are no messages currently in the section, which there are not (Except for yours, now). Currently, messages scroll off the forum after about three days, so setting the date to a time when you last posted a message, unless it was…
Don, All four messages got posted. I deleted two of the last ones and moved the others into the Chaos section (section 4) of this forum. Like I said earlier, there isn't much traffic in this section, and if there isn't current traffic, you will get the greyed out menu…
Don, It's there, but it ain't seeing much action at present.
#Where's Chaos?
Message #70982
This is my fourth attempt to post this message; each previous time I was unable to send it, and I don't know whether the problem is with WinCIS or CompuServe. Anyway, what I want to find out is what happened to the Chaos section. It's grayed out on the menu,…
#Where's Chaos?
Message #70975
What's happened to the Chaos section? It's grayed out on the WinCIM menu, and even when I reset the date to a time prior to when I posted a message there, I can't raise it.
Chaos?
Message #69620
That might already exist here on CIS, just in a different Section. You might try exploring some of the Forums dedicated to Science and Theroy, they might be able to tell you where else to look. -Brian
Chaos?
Message #69613
Thanks for the clarification. I usually tell people to look for his name, since it is the one on the front of the box. It avoids confusion for people when they try to order the software. -Brian
vonNeuman Q
Message #64404
I can't find my copy of _Artificial_Life_, so I'll have to be a little unspecific… I'm interested in CALab, but it's a little expensive for me. Now, if it came with or I could get my hands on, for little or no expense, the 'Q' shaped vonNeumanesque self replicating CA,…
Thank you for following up. I await the announcement.
Yup. Loadfix does do the trick. So does loading my mouse driver to reduce available memory. I think that's the way I'll go, since the mouse is indeed useful. Thanks for the steer.
CA Lab
Message #63664
[CThanks Josh for the info. I can get more copies of Chaos. I have bought one already at Comp USA. I'm desperately looking for CA Lab within the U.S. and figure that wherever Chaos is still sold, CA Lab might be also. Vicky
Gee, I dunno. Perhaps you might call there and find out. (And I dunno if the Egghead where I live is still selling CHAOS either; I haven't been there in a few months.)
CA Lab – available?
Message #63553
Earlier, someone sent a message requesting that someone from Autodesk Marketing make a statement about the availability of CA Lab software. I am responding to that message (sorry for having lost track of the sender). I called Marsha Murry at Autodesk Bothell. She said that an Autodesk VP will be…
Bob, the "Packed File Corrupt" message means you've got TOO MUCH MEMORY! You can find a little bit about this message by typing LOADFIX /? at any DOS prompt. Then change into the CHAOS directory, and type LOADFIX CHAOS If this works, you need to make the fix permanent. You…
#Chaos Error
Message #63541
I just tried reinstalling Chaos after a couple of years of not having it on my system. I get the message "Packed file is corrupt. Error: Metagraphics Not Installed. Aborting." This is Version 1. What do I need to do, if anything?
CA Lab
Message #63409
Josh… Since Egghead where you live is still selling Chaos. Is there any chance they're still selling CA Lab? I'd like to call there to find out. Thanks.
Would Someone for AUTODESK MARKETING please make a PUBLIC STATEMENT on this Issue! –Brad Holtz, THE CAD RATING GUIDE
I'm sorry to hear that. Our distribution of CA Lab meant that we sold only to distributors, and that local computer dealers bought from them. You might find out which distributors we use so that your local computer store (or you!) can call them and ask if they have any…
#CA Lab
Message #62825
I had talked to someone at AutoDesk and was told that they are no longer making CA Lab and didn't have it any longer. Unfortunately, they didn't know what chains it may have been sold to or other stores either. I will ask the question in the retail forum. Thanks.
It's possible that we have discontinued CA Lab. Look for a definite answer to that question either in the GO ARETAIL forum, or call the 800/228-3601 Retail Products Sales number and ask. (They're in Washington state.) I called, and they "thought" it was discontinued, but I have not seen any…

Message #62675
Does anyone know where CA Lab can be purchased in the United States. It is not available at either Egg Head or Comp USA in the Washington, D.C. area. Thanks.
Thanks for the information. No, I don't know _any_ of this; I'm not involved with any aspects of CHAOS any more, and never was with CALab.

Hi Josh. The Egghead in my area says they haven't carried Chaos for over a year. My copy was purchased at Comp USA. I'll check again with AutoDesk for other retailers. AutoDesk does not have CA Lab any longer. I guess you already know all of this. Actually, I only…
Many thanks Nik for your reply. I work in Guidford surrey, but wasn't aware ADESK had an office there. Kindest Regards

Buying CA Lab & Chaos
Message #61232
Try our Guildford Autodesk location for CHAOS help: Autodesk Ltd., England Cross Lanes Guilford Surrey GU1 1UJ 011 44 483-303-332 Thanks.
That's odd; Egghead has been selling CHAOS for at least a year in my neck of the woods, and was the first major chain to carry it. Perhaps they've got it indexed as "James Gleick's CHAOS: The Software", and not cross-referenced as just "CHAOS"? A "TSR" is a "terminate-and-stay-resident" program…
CHAOS
Message #60590
One last question. What are TSR's? I decided I need to buy two copies of CHAOS. One for my son's XT which was the main concern and another for me to enjoy as the program was intended–for our 386 and 486. Thanks for all the advice. I'm amazed that the…
It won't do any good to increase your RAM; CHAOS doesn't care about anything other than the "640K" of base memory. The fact that the software "calls for 640KB" is pretty irrelevant — it's really just a warning that CHAOS will pig out on however much memory is available, and…

Message #60428
I don't understand what you mean about expanded or extended memory with regards to CHAOS. Are you saying it wouldn't do any good or isn't necessary to increase RAM? Are you saying 600 KB is enough although the software calls for 640KB. What hardware needs to be upgraded? There is…
CHAOS makes no use of expanded or extended memory. It will run on an XT, but very slowly. (I know at least a couple people who upgraded their hardware specifically to run this program.)

Message #60272
Another question re Chaos. The XT has 640K total RAM. Dos requires around 40K. Will Chaos work with less than 640KB? Perhaps the RAM can somehow be expanded! How did the program run without a mouse? There are several GIF files for Chaos. Would it be a stretch to try…
CHAOS will work just fine without a mouse; I don't _think_ I programmed anything that can only be done with a mouse, though using the keyboard might be more tedious for some operations. In general, the arrow keys will nicely navigate around the menus. The use of the TAB key…
Vicky, still haven't had a chance to try CHAOS without a mouse. Sorry, I'll do it today. Thanks for your patience. P.S. Just read a message in the Animator section where a user pointed out that not everyone has a mouse. Thanks for validating his observation! Nik

Good news. The machine has an 8087 coprocessor. Bad news. No mouse. But, there's a 1200 modem.
The system does not appear to be unloading the Metashel as Josh suggests. This is a failure we have yet to figure out. You can try typing "Metashel /k" upon exiting Chaos to try releasing the Metashel. This line appears at the end of the CHAOS.BAT file but sometimes it…
It sounds to me like Metashel isn't unloading properly. (100K or so is about the size for that.) Are you getting any warning messages from the CHAOS batch file?
#Chaos & Conv. Memory
Message #54250
I have installed on my 386DX40 (4MB) a number of DOS programs, including Chaos, DOS 6.0, and WP6.0. After using DOS 6's Memmaker, my conventional memory goes to 619K free, 109K free of Upper, 0K free of Adpter RAM/ROM, and 1676K free of Extended (XMS). Then, say, I go into…
CHAOS
Message #53712
Hello Kurt! Thank you very much. "loadfix chaos" did it. Last when I used it, I had a 386SX Computer, now I got a 486/25 Board by chance and I searched in my "archive" (you know: every benchmark lies – which you have not created yourself). So my "benchmark" runs…

Could you send me info on the CA Lab. I have Chaos and am having a great time exploring it. Thank you.
I remember someone said to use the DOS LOADFIX.COM or EXE; LOADFIX CHAOS That might do it! Kurt McKeever -Frame of Mind-

Hello everyone! I am in CIM not so long, so maybe I have missed something. But my simple question is: How make Chaos run in any other DOS Version than 3.3? – Let`s say in DOS 6.x? It does not work, if I use another DOS Version, that is all.…
