#memory hungry mat editor
Message #72075
Gary, I seem to remember hearing of a problem someone was having a while back with the materials editor swiping memory from the renderer. I can't quite remember, but regardless, I'm having that problem now. I just noticed the problem on a large mesh I'm working on, but did some…
Dave, I think he's talking about loading a scaled down version of a much larger file, making changes to the smaller file, applying filters and such, and then once your satisfied with the changes, have Pstyler automatically make the changes to the full size file. I remember reading that this…

Hot New IPAS Release

Dan, Will the flocking routine assign flocking behavior to a group of pre-existing objects or will it only flock its own particles? Do you plan to upload demos or examples of the routines here? If not, please let me know how to obtain more info. Thanks, David
A 3 foot extension cable costs about $3.50 and all those worries about stressed connectors and not enough space behind the computer are taken care of. And printer problems? I don't have an answer for that one but at least I've never had a problem myself.
Sure. I'm not sure if they're calling themselves Digital Video or Desktop Video World. The latest issue has one name on the outside and another on the inside. But regardless, it is a very useful magazine covering all aspects of desktop video and computer animation for PCs, Macs, and Amigas.…
#EXABYTES for sale
Message #68155
I was just wandering around the CIS Classifieds section and I noticed an ad selling several used Exabyte 8500s tape drives for $1375 each. I just thought I might mention it here in case anyone is interested. If you are it's in the DOS disk/tape drives section.
Nik, Thank you. I'm using the VESA drivers now, so I'll be ok for the time being. I will try to E-mail you and Brian at the end of the week with the details. David
James, >>Did you try and leave me a message on our phone system?
>>As you say, what can you do with the rest of those colors in the 3D Editor?
David, Oops! I played with this one and it looks like what happens is that with atmosphere turned on (fog or Distance cue) the box IS reflected in the sphere, but the renderer is ignoring the object material and is making it the same color as the fog color. I…
Nik, I just called Vibrant this morning and dicovered thier aversion to dealing with 3ds users directly. They told me I had to go through my dealer with any display problems. He took down a brief description of the problem (probably just to get rid of me) and admitted they've…
After hearing the $295 price tag for liquid speed, I was in no hurry to get it either. At this point in time, being able to accomplish things a bit faster in 3ds is not going to put money in my pocket, so why shell out $300? However, I called…
Thanks, I think I'll call them today. After starting some work yesterday, I realized the problem was more widespread than I thought, placing polygons in the 2d shaper accurately is next to impossible because once I pick it up, I can barely see where I move it until its dropped.…
Jack, Well, I set the Vibrant drivers to 8x6x256 VESA and the create color swatch works fine, went back to Chrome 8x6x24bit and the swatch will only stay white. I have to stick with the chrome, because the VESA drivers are just too slow. I've also run into another problem,…
Don, I tried to use Qemm's stealth M to free up more memory but while doing that, my Wacom/mouse driver was unable to load high, and my VESA driver loaded, but was unrecognized by 3ds. I should try the stealth frame method to see if that does any better. My…
I am using the built in vibrant drivers at 800x600x24 bit with a Hecules chrome. I can't drop to 256 colors because the Chrome only supports 24 bit. When I get the chance I'll set 3ds to run VESA 8x6x256 on an ATI and see if it does the same…
Actually, I shouldn't be putting too much thought into this video thing because the last thing I should be putting money into right now is another video board. I think I'll wait a few months and then start checking into it again. It seems like every three weeks something new…
It's definitely something else to check into. Thanks. David
I hear the Tseng 4000 w/32i does dos faster than anybody, and I have used a first generation Herc dynamite board with the /w32, but to be honest, the difference between that and the ATI GU pro VL that I run now is barely noticable. If ATI came out with…
Jack, I'm not talking about changing colors. I open 3ds, click on the create color icon, the create color dialog comes up, I pick red, click OK, and the create color icon is still white even though all new objects created are red. Page 4-10, second paragraph says "Click to…
#Object color creation

I have a related problem. Isn't the object color box supposed to be the current color? I can click on the box, have the color selection dialog come up with 64 colors, pick a color, hit OK, but the color button is still white. I'll make a object which will…
Thanks, I'll check into it. Are these drives just meant for storage and backup, or are they treated as another hard drive, running at hard drive speeds, like the Syquest (14.5 ms)? An internal unit would work fine for me, any ideas on drive prices?
I'm running 3ds on 514k right now but I don't think I can get much higher than that. I have a tiga video board (chrome) that eats 48k, CD-rom taking 45k, mouse = 12k, vesa = 10k, Targa = 10k, and the targa zaps 64k out of high along with…
The S3-86C928 chip provides excelent windows perfomance and programs with drivers written specifically for that chip will run fine I'm sure, but DOS programs that use standard vga or VESA resolutions, such as Animator pro, will perform less than optimal on this chip. I have read reviews that rate the…
Martin, A note of possible interest from the latest Digital Video magazine: "Micropolis has a new family of 3.5 inch high capacity disk drives, designed specifically for digital audio, video and multimedia applications. The 2217 AV…. 1.76g formatted….. and the 2210 AV…. 1.05g. These drives claim to eliminate dropouts in…

I do have Dos 6, and while its a little annoying setting up for multiple configs, once its set adding another config is pretty easy. Its just having to reboot to use different programs is kind of a pain in the rear. Although I have several startup configs, right now…
When I switch between the 3d editor and mat editor my monitor (nec) takes about 3 seconds to change modes, but since the mat-editor is running on an ATI and the rest of 3DS runs on a Herc Chrome, I figure it's pretty normal. I never considered it a problem,…
Sounds interesting. Is the Pegasis a VLB card? I 'll call them and get more info, but it'll be a little while before I get serious about another video card. Too many things on the list! I've got a Hercules chrome right now which does 1024 at 24 bit, and…
Speaking of modeling, do you know anything about a program called Sculptura (I think) for windows? It sounds pretty interesting and has some tools for organic modeling and sculpting, which is what I'm looking for, and at $99 sounds like a deal. Anyone else have any experience with it? As…
If you have QEMM, you can have it shadow the bios while allowing the machine to see the ram (I have the same system). If you don't have Qemm… get it! (Let me know if you do have it and I'll help you set it up, or someone else with…
>> And now I hear they are in pre-post for the next *3* Star Wars movies…
>>* Big discount on Liquid Speed when you move up to 3DS R3
Well that's dissapointing. If that's the case, I'll have to consider another card instead, because if I pay $1k for a video card, it better give knockout performance in all areas, including DOS video speed (or at least give the option of vga passthrough with onother card that WILL give…
John, I was considering the card for a while, but decided to wait until they added hardware shading support for 3ds, or I should say "if". When I spoke to Matrox tech support a few months ago, I asked about dos speed, which is a major concern for me. I…
Thank You. This makes me feel better as I was about to spend half a day switching monitors, gamma settings, and rendering test images just to match the boxes. No need now. I do, however, feel this strange inner hatred for little gray boxes. David
Jeff, As an end user, I have been searching for something that would allow realtime playback of flics (640×480), with full delta changes. I was hoping the VL-bus would do it, but I still wound up with the restriction of limiting camera movement (as in no movement at all!) if…
John, I've been following this and have tried only using Tmode 11 (after removing a Tconfig batch from my autoexec.bat and rebooting) but something's still goofy. Setting the framebuffer gamma to 2.1 gives me the best results, and this is what I've got it set at presently. The outer box…
>> I don't know what you mean about Targa+ info being undocumented. The TMODE parameters are right in the manual.
Found it. Thanks. David
>> Where what & under what name what? It figures – just when you want people to cut down on extensive quoting of previous messages…> There is a color-bar .GIF (which, considering the colors used, is just fine) included on the 3D Studio R3 CD.>Lost in an impenetrable forest.
Could you tell me where and under what name? I looked but couldn't find anything.
>>to adjust the targa you really need the match gray panels test that you have been using. Your adjusting the monitor with unknown source targa files would still be guess work in my book.
Gamma in Photoshop is set at the default of 1.8, and stuff looks fine, so I don't think I'll mess with it.
All the controls on both monitors were pretty much centered when setting the gamma (and still are). If the Targa is doing correction on its own, I don't know, But a tconfig batch set to 1.0 is run before starting 3ds. I'll try to use the composite out of the…
Actually, I spit out several images onto the Targa and adjusted the monitor controls so that I got the best image on all the stills with a single monitor setting, so now that they're set, I don't need to touch them again. I certainly didn't mean to imply that I…
I seem to be having the same problem setting the gamma on my Targa+. I'm running through a T+ 16/32 straight to an NTSC monitor via S-video. The Targa Gamma is set to 1.0 via "tconfig". I couldn't get the color swatches to come even close. The outer box was…
But is that saying that mapped shadows still do not see opacity mapped and transparent objects properly? Thanks, David
PMJI, but does this mean that if I want a slightly soft edged shadow to respond to transparency or opacity maps, I'm out of luck? Just curious.
Keep in mind that Painter can use Photostyler and Photoshop plug-ins, such as gallery effects (and probably does them faster too!). And to let Photostyler users know, Aldus just announced version 2.0 today. David
I don't know the program at all, but how about "flatten", and then "save as" TGA, so the original file is not overwritten. That's my guess. David
