Jonas, Just a note to update you: 4DVision (multimedia division of Schreiber Instruments) no longer sells direct. People can indeed call that number for a referral to one of their authorized dealers. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates

Don, The Fargo is probably the most affordable dye-sub (avail. in letter-size & tabloid versions). Processing is done on the PC side, though – not in the printer. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
#191996 Porting IPAS to SGI Message #192011
From: CSA/CA Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Software Dev. Kits September 21, 1995 6:16 PM
Jeff, One good way to utilize the SGI Renderer is to render those parts of scenes that would NOT require any IPAS, but composite in Video Post with other elements, .IXPs, etc. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates

Anthony, Flip normals in the 3D Editor. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
From: CSA/CA Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio September 21, 1995 12:56 PM
Lydell, 1. You should be able to set your Images directory in your 3DS.SET file, although this might be overwritten by a default 3D.PRJ, if you're using it. 2. Yes, you can get the CD version of the R4 install disks. This is no charge through your dealer (OK, through…
#191874 255 material limit Message #191981
From: CSA/CA Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio September 21, 1995 12:56 PM
Stefe, Larry's response isn't entirely correct. To work around the 255-material limit in 3DS, start using .IFL files or other animated textures. This still limits your settings regarding Diffuse, Ambient, Specular lighting, etc., although you can use different textures, bumps, opacity maps and mapping coordinates. Kevin Krell – Computer Support…
#191875 #Porting IPAS to SGI Message #191978
From: CSA/CA Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Software Dev. Kits September 21, 1995 12:26 PM
Jeff, Perhaps you've misunderstood the concept of "porting" IPAS plug-ins to the SGI. You can't take any existing 3rd-party plug-ins and just "convert" them for use. You would need to modify and re-compile them for the target machine. Thus, you would either need source code from the developers, or you…

Don, Oh, I agree the Epson is pretty darn good when printing on the special paper, certainly a great value for $. But try printing on sandpaper – the Tek will do it. Main reason for that printer is color matching (not as good a proof as the dye-sub 480,…

Don, You can get good results on the Tektronix III Pxi or 300i using Tek's own laminator. It uses a lower heat setting then you might see with other laminators. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates

I'm not aware of any fully automatic way of dealing with normals, but you might look at the Yost Group's IPAS Disk # 7. "Optimize" displays visible "vector arrows" along with a real-time shaded display to let you interactively flip normals for cleanup. The disk is available from 4DVision (Schreiber…

Mike, The PAR does have IDE hard disk control directly on the board – for PAR use only, not as a system disk. You might look into the AMI (American Megatrends) Dual Pentium 10-slot board (4 PCI, 6 EISA, none obstructed, up to 120 MHz). Kevin Krell – Computer Support…

Hi Eron, Now if Truevision would just get the darn T2000 Pro out, with NT drivers. BTW, how's progress on Speed Razor – or are you waiting for the PVR NT drivers? Just sold a couple more, but had to split off as Razor Pro now, upgrades later. Kevin Krell…

From: CSA/CA Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Hware/OpSys/video September 10, 1995 4:41 PM
Kenneth, Premiere does not work under Windows NT (and the PVR is intended for NT – Win 3.1 support is a bit squirrelly). Speed Razor under NT would be a reasonable way to go (you've been told about the pricing though). Targa 2000 with Razor Pro is fine under Win…

Dennis, One thing – output from the ATVista is ONLY RGB. You must run through an external encoder to go to NTSC composite, or transcoder to go to Betacam. Also, the board is at the end of its life – I expect Truevision to discontinue new manufacture any day. Then…

From: CSA/CA Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio September 8, 1995 8:21 PM
Martin, I apologize, now you're RIGHT. I guess it would be a bug, but Gary's always pushed .IFLs as the preferred way to do things. One more reason why . I would have tested it myself, but my demo system's hard drive is a little whacked. Looks like a Monday…

Rock, PMJI, as I missed your orignal question. The 3DS.SET variable DTV-SCALE-UP (Disk-to-Video) parameter determines whethe a disk image is scaled or fill the screen or centered within it. VIEW-SCALE-UP does the same for that function. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
#189656 Biggest Drive for PAR Message #189659
From: CSA/CA Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Hware/OpSys/video September 7, 1995 7:04 PM
Jeffrey, PMJI, but the PAR & PVR share the same list price from the manufacturer. Obviously, what dealers choose to sell them at varies, in part according to availability, dealer commitment and stocking levels, method of payment, etc. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
#189612 Alias/Wavefront Message #189658
From: CSA/CA Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Take 5/Want Ads September 7, 1995 7:04 PM
Andre, PMJI, but would this be a poor time to mention that the Alias/Wavefront software does NOT run on the Impact series? In fact, they specifically recommend against it (we're dealers, BTW). Couple of months down the road, possibly. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
From: CSA/CA Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Hware/OpSys/video September 7, 1995 12:14 PM
Philip, DPS is currently quoting filling back orders (and current new orders) within 30 days. It's certainly hoped that we'll get them filled sooner, and that's probably true for orders earlier in the queue. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
#189452 Biggest Drive for PAR Message #189454
From: CSA/CA Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Hware/OpSys/video September 6, 1995 8:29 PM
Jeffrey, Drives suitable for the PAR will not work with the PVR. Simple reason – PAR drives are IDE, PVR drives are SCSI – different interfaces. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
From: CSA/CA Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Hware/OpSys/video September 6, 1995 1:28 PM
Dennis, Network terminator are usually 50 ohm. Video terminators are usually 75 ohm. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
From: CSA/CA Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio September 6, 1995 1:28 PM
Carlton, Given no single-frame, no real-time playback of 24-bit images (via PAR), then you're stuck with 256-color flics. Just go to .FLC format, you don't get an option for fields. If you're rendering to .TGAs and then assembling, I'd still suggest frame rendering to keep down on the amount of…

Don't know, CSA is not an educational dealer for Autodesk – you'd have to contact your local Area Education Rep, student store, or Autodesk Educational Programs. We do handle educational sales for folks like Schreiber/4DVision, but Autodesk runs things differently. The Siggraph offer was alos only good until 8/31/955, now…

Boy, I'm not sure how this thread got named "Electric guitars". These are acoustic. While it may be OK to contact McCabe's by mail (do I presume there are no other suitable guitar store candidates closer to you?), buying a guitar without playing it first is downright silly. So you'd…

Rico, OK, let me try, using a quote from INFOWORLD magazine. "Many observers cite the fact that Windows 95 still clings to a 16-bit past in critical areas such as the USER.EXE and parts of the Graphics Device Interface." "'The slowest things will slow you down more than the fastest…

Bob, I had a friend who purchased an incredibly beat up "00" (patched when the metal armrest, pickguards and such being removed) for $100, back about 1972. Much better sound than any other Martin I've ever heard. He also got a small-body classical for $200. I hated him. As for…
