How soon they forget. We (IDLab) used the Alpha Split option to make the C roll matt for the Autodesk R12 Tape so the narrator could walk around the shell image. (Though they didn't end up using the shot in the end -typical) Perhaps for our next tape we should…
We use an LVR-5000 (hopped up) here in Autodesk's Image Development lab. I say hopped up because we got it 4 years ago for doing the Bored Room and simply upgraded it as improvements came. It is a crucial element in our lab and is responsible for all video animations…
I doubt ANYONE is trying to keep 3D Studio elitist, it just happens that with any powerful software that can be used to make $$, some people will be reluctant to share their tricks. That may come accross as being elitist, but that's the biz, not the design of our…

I think anything going to video needs field rendering. It's rare that it fails to deliver a better image. One primary reason is that field rendering eliminantes frame flicker. Frame flicker is not an alias problem, it's video's. You can easily see frame flicker in video if you bump up…

Is this an old topic for you? I'm not sure what you meant by your last comment '3DS – I don't see why things are done the way they are'. Are you unhappy with the interface? Sorry if this is a topic you've already covered. I'm just curious and extremely…
I'm not sure what makes black 'SUPER'. I do recall that when we went to convert our stuff to D1 we found RGB 0,0,0 to be TOO BLACK and we bumped the video level. Could that be it? Perhaps RGB 0,0,0 is super black? If not we'll need to know…
Wow! Great news. Can you go into more details just yet? Like company names and contacts. Can we get the sample animations for the next CD-Rom? I'm SURE our marketing department would like to interview someone on this for an applications story. Jamie
Sounds like you need to use ALPHA SPLIT to make files that you can then record to tape to make an animated MATT. I take it you want to Chroma-key you animation on top of another video segment? Jamie
Oooh, just remember that the 'grass is always greener'. It can be fun but the balance of work and pleasure often tips for long times on the WORK side. Anyway, thanks for the kudos, that helps the pleasure side quite a bit. More butt kicking to follow… Jamie

An amusing work around for the time being is as follows. (It's CRUDE!) o Make a list of where you are keeping your materials for a given .3DS. o Make a 'dummy' 3DS.set (I do this in its own directory, of course) and in the file, have only one line;…

I used to use that but I didn't like to alter my smoothing groups (or remember the numbers.) I've used materials to give me extra selection sets. Example, I have a creature that has the same material for all its skin. I make duplicate skin materials for UpperArm, LowerArm, Chest…

Err, if you're talking about the blades on the helicopters in the end shot of the NEW Release 2 video, you're wrong. That is not an animated opacity map, it's geometry spinning VERY FAST. (whatdayaknow!) I attribute field rendering to the realizm of the blade spin. There is a glassed…
Yes, it's a simple little utility that I use ALL the time. Not just for making material .IFLs but for 3d Studio's Video Post as well. Perhaps I should have documented the usage in greater detail. Another cool thing you can do with it is to make a series of…
Great, can't wait to get it. Should be fun. As for Comdex, I may be able to get some new stuff together for it. Don't think we'll have time for a new video but who knows? Jamie

Yup, that's what we're using up here in the lab. Jeff Mildner uses Ron Scott's utils. It's fast enough for me, but I haven't anything to compare to. What have you been useing in the past? Jamie – Autodesk Image Development Lab
Drilling a hole in a complex object takes some work but it can be done. Here is how I've done it. 1. Take a cylinder and place it where you would like the hole to be, reverse the normals on the object now, makes it easier later. Also remove the…

I would contact Photon about the ADI. It sounds like it has a problem with the new ADI specification. It shouldn't, but if it worked with 2.6, that is the only theory I can come up with. Jamie
The postscript driver is "generic". It should work with any device that accepts postscript input. Jamie
Yes there are a few plotting utilities in DL 10 [Utilities / ADI]. I would BROWSE /keyword plotter Jamie
The plotter and computer are locking up? A ^C isn't canceling the plot routine? That sounds like major hardware incompatibility. You may want to try slowing down the 386 to 10 or 8 and see if that helps. We have not had this problem with the "real" Draftpro we have…
If the font has many vectors in it, like triplex, it can take longer to do some commands. The way to redefine the style with a new font is real easy. Using the STYLE command answer the first prompt with the name of the Style and then the second prompt…
You will no doubt get a thousands answers to this (cause it's fun and fairly easy) but this is how I solved your problem. Note: You had half the battle finished. ;random.lsp (defun get_random ( / ctime hour min sec) (setq ctime (getvar "cdate") hour (* 100 (- ctime (fix…
I really don't see where adjusting LISPSTACK could effect the system shell. I am not surprised that an ADI is effecting the limit of your SHELL, however we have the Twin Focus here on a 386, 2meg Vdisk get a 512k shell. It may be your EMM.SYS effecting your environment.…
I think we will have to have a "Membership drive". I'll let you know soon. Jamie
Currently versions of PKXARC are in DL 5, 9 and 10. Look for a file call PKX34a.com or PKX35a.com. Just type DL 9 then BRO PK*.* that will bring the most recent version up for downloading. Jamie
Peter, DXFIN is on the wish list for future versions of AutoSketch. You guys covered most of the reasons it isn't there now. AutoSketch would have to remove much of the information that an AutoCAD drawing can contain (Layer names, text styles, solids, 3d entities and so on). You could…
Jim, there are many "new" OSs (OSs?) being reviewed. OS/2 is a contender. But DOS is still the main OS for Release 10. The "next" OS has not been established, I wager we'll know more in the year to come. What ever OS we choose will be made very visible…
Yes, it is in the ACAD manual. However there are many who want to use DXF files for other systems and programs and they don't have ACAD. And Autosketch customers don't (as yet) get that information with their software. It is a request we get from time to time. There…
Great! Thanks for the file. I will review it today. Jamie
Not yet. I would like to offer it on the forum. I have a few such requests pending approval. CompuServe wish list item, I guess. Jamie
There is space in DL9 now. You should have no problem uploading your demo. As a person who has seen the working version, I look forward to having the demo version on the forum. Vince "The Flying Dutchman" should be here this week! If there are any messages, I'll pass…
Jeff, Yes it is possible that many have purchased boards that will never be able to use the AUI effectively. I have seen some attempts (by boards that will remain nameless) that I would never use the ADI/AUI due to the slow speed. Now they do offer higher res and…

From – Sandra Boulton Autodesk Marketing Glad to hear that there's another good guy out there! My responsibilities here at Autodesk include investigating copyright infringement cases, so I think I can answer your questions. Like Bradly mentioned, I am not going. I have my reasons. The sun, the mountains, my wife and Sausalito! "Today at the show". You bet. Brad, Steve? (maybe even Duff?) Jamie
The Phantom! (I kind of like that) I have been toying with the idea of getting a GIF scan of CompuServe Central on the Forum. Perhaps we'll get around to it sometime. I think I'll logon to your BBS and use that as a nom de plume! What no 2400?…
Nick, that question crops up from time to time, but there has yet to be an ADI show up. Sorry. Jamie
There are none in the public domain that I am aware of. Sorry. Jamie
Robert, I just opened the package from you today! Thanks a million. Look for the space station in an up coming AutoFlix film! I also think your fly up to the piping structure was amazing! Can you create a fly around that when ARCed is small enough to be on…

AUTOCAD EXPO '88 PRE-REGISTRATION SOARS SAUSALITO, California, April 22, 1988 – Autodesk announced today that pre-registration figures for AutoCAD Expo '88, held in conjunction with A/E/C SYSTEMS '88, are running far ahead of those for last year's show, which drew a record attendance. According to A/E/C SYSTEMS, over 25,000 visitors…
If rumors were apples, I'd be an in-cider! The rumor mill is churning, no thanks to Mac Leak. This is indeed the place to find out what is official. The official word is, we currently do not have AutoCAD available for the Apple. We are looking at the Mac ][…
You need to perform a relational move? That can be done in 2.6 with either lisp or .XY filters. I think there is even a lisp routine in Dl2 that may do what you seem to be looking for. lease be more specific as to what you are attempting to…
It has been a wish list item . I think I will make a valiant attempt to place the CO in DL9. They have to be edited as sometimes private messages get mixed in. Jamie
We have been considering the concept but have not made any decision. It still remains a wishlist item. As Brad said, we will not be supporting the Weitek. Jamie
You have it now. I must have missed the request before, sorry. Jamie
Well the word is that you can get it to work in "exclusive" mode. I am not sure if this is suitable to your installation, but at least it seems it can be done. It is not a "supported" environment but if you run into problems I will see if…
