YOu forgot to mention that changing platforms is always an option. Judy
Actually I run PC-DOS and OS/2 for Windows type stuff. The game companies I refer to are the ones that are local to me – not what goes on in California. I am planning to add a lot of IPAS etc. to R4 – it still has a lot going…
Ask the players running KQ7 under WIndows who get a "GROWSTUB" error if they thing there is a standard! Running MS-DOS, Windoze etc. – is no guarantee of a standard. The over-priced Microsoft 9.0 "gee whiz" mouse driver is wreaking havoc with games. Judy
Judging from the trouble so many users have running games I was not aware that there are really any meaningful standards for PCs. From the user point of view it is a jungle out there! Judy
#153589 3D paint for 3DS! Message #153795
From: Judy Weller Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Index and Info February 17, 1995 9:00 AM
This sounds like a must buy! Thanks for the news! Judy
You are right there about the hardware requirements. They are really excessive and point to poor programming. They have the same problem with MS-DOS. Microsoft programmers seem to take the easy way out and write in high level languages which are by the very nature inefficient and slow. ALso they…
IPAS Developer Kit Message #153524
From: Judy Weller Autodesk Multimedia Forum · IPAS Usage February 16, 1995 8:14 AM
How much is the IPAS developer's kit for R4, where can I find it and also what is the recommended compiler to use? Judy
I agree with you Jack, that they should make 2 versions of R5 an NT and a NON-NT (i.e. DOS) version. Judy
Like Greg says – the longer an operating system is around, the better and more stable it is. There is nothing more painful than v1.0 of any operating system – no matter how long it has been tested! Unix has been around for a very long time – and has…
Sorry John – Nothing will ever make me have a Microsoft operating system. I do not believe that Intel based systems are the future. I do hope that the judge will break-up Microsoft and from the DC papers this morning the judge is looking at that approach. I do think…
I agree with your 100% Jack – I am definitely looking at different modelers for the future. Judy
If you go the elegant route – go all the way and write your own operating system. That is the best solution of all. Judy
I have been playing around a bit with Alias and I am quite impressed with it and its capabilities as a modeler. Also I just saw their new AXP for hair/fur etc. and I was really impressed with that. Also I think that the future for power-house computing will utlimately…
Save my pennies for an SGI with Alias. I think that is where the game market is going anyway! Judy
Basically what it comes down to for me is that I WILL NOT RUN NT. I do not like Microsoft products – they are poorly written and designed and they are bug filled. Their support is truly abysmal and they prefer to charge you for an upgrade when all they…
However, John, the path taken to the future might be wrong! There are other available paths. Judy
Will 3DS still run under DOS? If it requires a genuine 32 Bit system will it run under OS/2? Also the Russians have written a 32 Bit DOS (available in Germany I understand) that I might use.

#146944 #Modeling a horse Message #147292
Can't afford to buy a mesh – besides the one I have seen in the VIewpoint catalog all look like Arabian horses or Saddlebreds – not the kind and breed of horse I want. I need to model the specially bred horses for knights – much heavier – Hanoverian breed…

I am not sure which SGI machine they have – but I do know a game company that dropped 3DS for SGI + ALIAS. ALthough I did hear that ALias Crashed a lot. They were doing some renderings for CES and I was told that some mesh ( I think…
#146252 Winter CES 1995 Message #146379
Martin – My impression is that where ever possible companies prefer SGI machines ( if they can afford it) running ALIAS. The rendering time is much much faster than the equivalent image in 3DS. ALso I have heard companies claim that their artists can build images quicker in Alias and…
#146148 What is Z-Buffering Message #146305

#146154 #What is Z-Buffering Message #146304
I used David S's technique of building a Depth Matte for that shot which I used as the Mask when I put the thing through Video Post. I basically had 3 entries in the Video Post – the background, The Sub with a depth mask which was created with distance…

This is a new improved one! Same mesh but different camera angle and lighting! Judy
#145947 #What is Z-Buffering Message #146098
Thanks Jonas – I had showed someone a JPG of a sub I had done, and I was asked if I used Z-Buffer or distance cueing. I had used Distance cueing and had never heard of Z-Buffer. I will check out the IXP you mentioned.! Thanks Judy
Modeling a horse Message #145939
Michelle – I remember your saying that you did a zebra mesh. Well I am working on a horse mesh and I am having a real problem getting the body correct. I modeled the head and neck separately but am having a real problem with the body. I would appreciate…
#What is Z-Buffering Message #145938
Could someone explain to me what is Z-Buffering and what are its advantages? Judy

It was just that the characters – looked so stiff and angular – you could see the polygons. The hair – was just solid colored polygons and it seemed to me that they opted for this as a "style" as opposed to aiming for reality as they did in their…

Thanks I will take a loot at them. As I said the scenery is not bad – it is the character animation and rendering that is so awful! The way they walk is horrendous! They don't even look like they are walking on the ground 🙁 Judy
Does anyone know if 3DS was used for the game Dragon Lore? It is published by Mindscape, but is actually by a Company called Cryo. Everything is rendered and while the scenery and dragons look great – the rendered people look awful. Also when they walk they don't look like…
#144529 #XGA + ANIPLAY.exe Message #144629
I used to have an XGA-2 card ( replaced it with an ATI MACH 32) – and you will need to get OEM drivers from another company. XGA will not work with UNIVESA and its VESA drivers do not work in 640x480x256 with Ani Pro. Give a company like Panacea…

Anybody got any thoughts as to how good MICRON computers would be to run 3DS? I am looking at their Pentium 90 with 32MB of memory. Judy

They will look better in JPEG, but if they are only going to be 640x480x256 in the game, then upload in that resolution. I want to see how they will look in the game, not how they will look in 16million colors. Judy

It could have been worse – they could have selection Rational Systems' DOS extender:DOS4GW 🙁 Judy
#131812 Why I won't upgrade Message #132004
Because it may limit your choice of an OS. Right now there are lots of choices in the way you want to run 3DS – PC-DOS/MS-DOS/OS-2 etc. Who wants to be limited in the OS they use. I like freedom of choice in my OS – I don't to be…

Since IBM is also making a DOS 7.0 – I would be surprised if that was a subset of Windows 95 – but Like you it is just what I have read in the magazines. I did hear that IBM DOS will have an OS/2-like GUI interface. I am not…
#131249 #Why I won't upgrade Message #131424
Since there is rumored to be a DOS 7.0 I hope that they will make it compatible with DOS 7.0/6.1 and not saddle everyone with the need to upgrade to a brand new OS. Judy

#131071 Why I won't upgrade Message #131135
The product can also be made backward compatible – i.e. it would still run in a pure DOS environment or a Window/NT environment. I don't think it should lock out all those people who have no plans or reason to run a Windows/NT system. Of the products you cite -…
#130823 Why I won't upgrade Message #130886
I only use Windows when I need to use Composer or Painters – other wise I never start it. I prefer to work regularly in plain DOS. Judy
#130707- #Why I won't upgrade Message #130774
Let's also make sure that it runs on OS/2 or DOS 7.0 – Not everyone in the world wants to be "stuck" with a Microsoft Operating System. Judy
