SCSI confusion…
Message #104651
Hi Larry, I didn't say that exactly. Let me explain again. I'm not saying that a very high performance SCSI controller is a waste of time or that nobody will use it. I'm just saying that it is overkill for a lot of users, that's all. I realize that many…

"FATS"? I haven't heard of this, what does that stand for? Maybe you mean FAST! . Could you give me models that you consider fast? As far as I am aware, the Seagate Barracuda drives are the fastest (fatsest ). They can transfer at a peak rate of 5.6MB /…
Will pass along your request for info. Let's hope PhonePak gets more Amigas into professional use. All users of PhonePak I know of so far are thrilled with the product.
You're right. I'm just saying we gave users the option of putting memory in or out of the auto config space so that they'd have memory for Zorro II cards to DMA into. In your case it's not a problem because you have "other" (16 bit) memory in the autoconfig…
I'll try to answer this one. It depends what you mean by a trunk line. Say a trunk line can bring in 3 simultaneous calls. They actually enter a building as 3 different phone numbers even though a caller calls one number, i.e., if the first line on the trunk…
Yup, yup. As I mentioned, we at GVP are fairly familiar with these issues . People have asked us a lot why we haven't come out with a SCSI-II Zorro III controller for the A4000. Well besides the typical performance issues being discussed here, one only has to look at…
Thanks for the supporting info. We at GVP tend to keep up on these things, for obvious reasons.
Parallel head drives do exist, but I'm not aware that Maxtor makes one. Parallel head drives from Seagate (the only ones I am aware of) don't come with SCSI interfaces however, only IPI. COOL drives, however. And of course, HUUUGE $$$.
Hi Chas. It's not that simple. The DPS system has an LSI Logic compression chip set on it. Those (roughly) 800K 24 bit full screen frames are probably going down as 80K or so (10:1) on the drive. That makes it easy for the drive to keep up. But (I'll…
None whatsoever. And I used to work there also.
Thanks Don, that supports my case even more that people don't need controllers that brag about 5, 10, even 20 MB / second. They might be able to use SOME of the bandwidth SOME of the time, but over the long haul it doesn't buy them much.
Well that sounds like a great drive, so I'm sure you probably will see better performance on the 4091. Enjoy! Paul.
Hi Steve. The only advantage of having some 32 bit RAM in the autoconfig range is if you have another Zorro II card that does DMA. Then it can DMA into the faster 32 bit memory. If you don't have one of those, then you're fine the way you've got…
You can tell a GVP 030 (or 040) card to have the on-board RAM be "extended" i.e., outside the usual auto-config address space. This will enable you to keep your 8MB 16 bit card and put up to 16MB on the GVP card. Hope this helps, Paul.
Hi Craig. I hope C= does something like you suggest also, but I fear they won't be able to port the O.S. quickly to RISC. I agree with your assessment of what has happened. As for Atari's built in MIDI though, I don't exactly consider that a great feat. With…
Hi Paul. I am certainly aware that many home users spend a lot of money on Amiga products, but SCSI II fast and wide drives are really not available, i.e., you can't really buy them unless you know someone. But I am curious, what would you use a, say, 2.2GB…
Hi Chas. As I said – the DPS Animation Recorder is a very nice product. Limiting it to one brand of hard drive however is a bit of a shame. I'm not sure why they didn't just go SCSI, although that requires a lot more software. As far as this…
First, Personal Animation Recorder records anims DIRECTLY to a DIRECTLY ATTACHED ** IDE ** drive, I believe. Second, Sunrize's nice AD516 board (which we have a couple of in house) can in theory play back up to 8 individual channels of 48KHz audio at once (out of one stereo out,…
> Paul, I LOVE YOU!!! Wow – now that's what I call gratitude. We, er, care deeply about Amiga users also. > Thank you for posting that very important revelation. Just trying to be of service because I saw people getting it wrong over and over. Some people WILL need…
I believe we mainly offer our A500HD8+ with a drive in it, but I think we do also offer it without. The A500HD8+ is nice because the case work EXACTLY matches the A500, you get internal and external SCSI connections and two SIMM sockets for up to 8MB (16 bit)…
1. Yes (we're trying to get rid of references to A2000 since it works on A4000 also). 2. (Therefore) Yes, it works fine in an A4000, as long as it has the version 4.13 ROM, I believe. Paul.
Hi Chas. Yes, Seagate appears to be making the best SCSI drives right now, which is obviously in large part due to the fact that they bought CDC (maker of those wonderful WREN drives, etc). Those 3.5GB drives you mentioned are probably a) not available yet, and b) HUGE $$.…

I'd like to try and hopefully straighten out a few misconceptions about SCSI. First there was just "SCSI" (1 or I if you like). This was a command set and an 8 bit interface. "SCSI-II" (2) is an expanded command set, but is still based on the 8 bit interface.…

Erik – just a note to congratulate you on the amazing cover picture you did for this month's AmigaWorld. I'm a bit jaded when it comes to 3D stuff, but you blew me away. WELL DONE! Paul. P.S. – Where is that JPEG file you mentioned on here?
Hehe – I actually considered Subaru – and I own one also! Subaru's certainly had it's share of troubles too. They've bet the farm on the Impreza it looks like. I'm reasonably interested in an SVX for my next car, actually.
I guess I've become "philosophical", then. While I certainly find differences between the various computers I've used/use, and I've certainly invested huge amounts of time and money over the years, I still have never hated a particular computer. I have fun with 'em all! There's definitely something unique about the…
Aha, finally, vindication. so the 040-33 is fastest, right?
You're saying the 040-33 is slower than the 040-28? I'm mystified. And that they're both slower than the 030-40? Even more bizarre. This just doesn't jive.
I still don't buy the fact that the 040 isn't suited for graphics tasks. There must be something else about your setup that I'm not understanding because we did a lot of benchmark testing on the 030 vs 040 using LightWave specifically, and the 040 was MUCH faster (don't have…
Hi Leslie. Sorry you're having difficulty framegrabbing with the IV-24. I also have a Hi8 Sony camcorder, and have successfully used it as an S-Video source into the VIU and framegrabbed from it. If the video looks good in the PIP or in Genlock mode, you shouldn't have any trouble.…
> I hate my PC and all I use it for is to play games. "Hating" a computer is a bit odd, isn't it? Clearly you enjoy the PC when you're playing games on it so it can't be that awful. Clearly MS-DOS is junk compared to AmigaDOS, but it's…
I don't believe it is possible to change the ID on the series II card, sorry.
Thanks for the thorough feedback. 1) I do believe it is certainly possible to have code that runs slower on an 040 than an 030/882 combination (transcendentals, as I mentioned, are likely to be a problem). As you noted, the integer version of LW surely ran faster than the 030/882…
Just to make sure there's no concern, I want to make it clear that we still have lots up our sleeves for the Amiga here at GVP! Our entry into the PC market was simply a natural part of our growth as a company. Regards, Paul.
First, what speed 030 are you talking about, and the 040 I presume is our 33MHz model for A2000, right? Second, you're using Lightwave, right? Regarding the serial and parallel ports – it's tough for me to comment since you gave almost no details on what you're trying to do…
Hi Jim – maybe I can help. World of Commodore Pasadena CA is September 10-12 I believe. Amiga shows don't tend to have a theme, they just cover all Amiga uses. Certainly multimedia and video are the big themes! Regarding, Siggraph, it has become more and more a very technical…
It certainly can't hurt, but I think you would achieve more if you determine what your objectives are. What specifically do you hope Commodore will do once they read it? Good luck, Paul.
The only way an 030/882 combination can outdo an 040 is on transcendental (sine, cosine, etc) floating point functions, and that's only a maybe. The 040's internal architecture and cache designs make it run rings around 030/882 on everything else. Granted, transcendentals can be used for graphics, but there's almost…
I didn't see the start of the thread– but the subject alarmed me. After EXTENSIVE testing within GVP, we can confidently state that NOTHING can make Lightwave render faster than a GVP '040 card. Please explain what makes you believe that it's slow. Thanks, Paul.
Will forward your info to someone at GVP and see if they can figure out a solution. Sorry for the confusion and your troubles.
Who specifically do you plan to write to at Commodore? And what are you hoping to achieve?
1. First, DEC is definitely banking on NT to propel its Alpha chip into the market. I have no idea about DEC and Commodore talking. The Alpha chip looks like it will be pretty expensive from Commodore's point of view. 2. Contrary to other responses (Paul Idol's I believe), IBM…
No question – the upward compatibility and longevity of older Amigas a marketable ASSET overall. Clearly ya can't run Windows on an XT (gag). Instead of continually marketing back at the same end-users over and over (no offense meant), i.e., power-up, etc., Commodore should market the compatbility issue to new…
While you say the move to AGA is hopefully an exception as far as users having to replace their whole (older) machines to get that feature, I'm not so sure. Remember that while the A500 and A2000 were GREAT for users and third party companies who could make lots of…
That's a shame. Oh well, Commodore has certainly been back and forth as far as interest in education.
First, I don't think NewTek has anything to worry about within the Amiga community. Second, I completely agree with your point about Toaster being ideal for those on a tight budget, and so does NewTek. They stated at NAB that they're trying to define a new low end term of…
Well Jonathan, the last thing I'm on here to do is plug PC products like the Video Machine! I think it takes 2 slots, however. As for taking over, I don't think so, since it runs under Windows. I think if you're interested, you should check with them directly.
Hey let's not get to pessimistic here! 4 million is very significant. First, while there's tons of PCs out there, they're not all made by one company! Second, Amiga penetration was far faster than Macs at one time as a matter of fact, although since Apple has drastically lowered prices…
In the U.S. – I would expect there's still more Apple IIs in use than Amigas. Apple sold zillions of them to schools and many schools are still tied into the software on those machines. Come to think of it, Commodore certainly sold zillions of C64s compared to the numbers…
Video Machine is list $3995. Sounds high compared to Toaster, but remember that includes machine control, audio, and TBCs. As Lou said, however, doesn't have the wonderful Lightwave (or any 3D) software, however.
