my wishes Message #77788
From: Ian Christie Autodesk Software Forum · Wishlist January 20, 1994 6:50 PM
My wishes for R4 (wow, just typing R3 gives me goosebumps) would be for improved charater animation support. For one, a Keyframer graph view and editor would be nice. And of course the highly coveted inverse kinematics and "smart skin" concepts.
#76933 Calcomp Digitizer Message #76952
From: Ian Christie Autodesk Software Forum · Autodesk Animator January 17, 1994 10:37 PM
I have the DB II but not Ani Pro (yet!) so I may not be able to be too helpful. But my guess would be to try setting up the tablet in Wacom emulation mode in the configuation utility. My fingures are crossed, but from my experience the Calcomp does…

Very helpful! Thanks Chuck. Ian.

Thanks Greg, When you say that I need a bill of sale and letter to send to ADesk do you mean the original bill of sale or one made out by the previous owner. And the letter should be something from the previous owner? I'd like to pick up a…

What's the official policy on buying used software? Is it upgradeable?
From: Ian Christie Autodesk Software Forum · General January 13, 1994 9:08 PM
If your refering to DOS' 2 HD limit. The latest versions of DOS supposedly _can_ access more than two drives but not all SCSI card work with this feature. You can use Syquest's driver (if it didn't come with your drive call Syquest) or CorelSCSI. Ian.
#75689 #KF rendering Message #75836
OOps! I think I realized what happened — scene motion blur was on. I imagine that 3DS would need to render previous and subsequent frames before being able to produce the single still frame that I was after. By the way, having tons of fun with 3DS3 — great job!
#KF rendering Message #75665
From: Ian Christie Autodesk Software Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio January 11, 1994 10:16 PM
Can I render single frames frome Video Post? When I try, it goes through the regular render cycle…"setting up lights", "setting up normals", etc. But when its finished rendering the frame it starts "setting up lights", etc. again. If I press ESC to stop the repetition, no picture is produced.…

#3DS format? Message #72746
From: Ian Christie Autodesk Software Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio December 20, 1993 8:35 PM
Is there a description available for the 3DS file format? I've been writing some utility that algorithmicly produce models and write them to ASC format. But as the models get bigger the read/write time also increases. Ian.

(504)78-2940? is that enough numbers? Who is Digimation anyway? Ian.
From: Ian Christie Autodesk Software Forum · Autodesk Animator December 16, 1993 3:40 PM
Don't know how to do it with AniPro, but Photoshop PhotoStyler and CricketPaint all have filters to let you shift an image diagonally and wrap the shifted out regions around. Once youv'e done that the edges will match up, now just touch up the lines that were created by shift.…
Fuzzy objects? Message #69839
Does anyone have any special techniques for creating fuzzy or hairy objects, ie. rabbits, etc? Any suggestion appreciated (no matter how outlandish.) Ian.
#65691 #3DS2RIB RIB23DS Message #65743
Did you say $1500 for standalone WinRMan? $1500 will get you the Macromodel the Mac for a couple of hundred. Ian.
#65675 #3DS2RIB RIB23DS Message #65741
Have you tried POV. Not bad, but you loose a lot in the translation ie. materials. But it does have some GREAT procedural textures; try the stone textures.
#65622 #3DS2RIB RIB23DS Message #65740
Well, for one, I'd love to import Typestry models. As much as I love 3DS, Typestry does a much better job of creating 3d text (and much easier to!) Secondly, as a student at Pratt institute, I'd like to find a better way of exchanging 3d data (better than DXF!)
#65540 #flics Message #65555
From: Ian Christie Autodesk Software Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio November 8, 1993 11:21 PM
Yes, I do have R3. Have you noticed that the flic player in R3 (vibrant) is _way_ slower than the ADesk Windows flic player. How could this be? I have an accelerated Local Bus card (Graphite) yet the R3 player can't even maintain 15fps at 320×240! Maybe the $300 Liquid…

#65355 #3DS2RIB RIB23DS Message #65503
I don't quite get it. Even if its not quite ready for prime time. there must be an alternate way of distributing this app. Shareware? PD?
#flics Message #65327
Couple of questions regarding flics. Its seems as though the stand alone animation player that comes with 3DS does not play flc's; is this correct? Why not? Second: how can I play a flic inside 3DS at its actual size. Right now it blow the flic up to fill the…

I, for one, will keep praying to the Great 3D Gods until something is released. Perhaps sacrificing a few mesh animals might help? Ian.
I'm trying, I'm trying! I don't think Calcomp thinks that there are enough users to justify writing a driver just for 3DS. Why is it that ADI drivers that are written for Autocad do not work for 3DS. What's the point of having a universal driver interface if a separate…
Maybe R4? How 'bout it Yost group?
Wish I could get my Calcomp to work…sob.
Calcomp Drawing Board II's Summa emulation mode doesn't work with 3D Studio either. Does anyone actually write ADI drivers for 3DS to work with tablets? Ian.

Interesting, I've got some homework to do. Can you think of any good references that cover sending keyboard and mouse messages to other programs? How does a program find out what else is running and how does it get a handle to that program and its resources?
From: Ian Christie Autodesk Software Forum · OpSys/Networks October 26, 1993 2:38 PM
Yeh, I just got the upgrade notice. No mention of any batch anything. Ian.
From: Ian Christie Autodesk Software Forum · OpSys/Networks October 25, 1993 9:26 PM
Great idea! Why hasn't Aldus or Adobe thought of this? Too busy counting their dough no doubt. I'd be quite interested in a shareware product like this. I don't want to be too nosy, but I'm curious as to how you send commands to these programs; is this a built…

Buy ANOTHER paint program? Eeek! I must have dozens already. Ian.
From: Ian Christie Autodesk Software Forum · OpSys/Networks October 24, 1993 4:53 PM
Could you tell me more about your batch processor for PhotoStyler/Photoshop? Sounds like it would be a _real_ useful thing to me, but I never figured out how to make these progs listen to outside messages.

I may have it. I relaces the Herc card to test it with my old ATI VGA Wonder (which worked.) when I replaced the Graphite I straightened out a couple of chokes on the board that looked a bit askew, and I haven't had a crash since! Well yet… I…

Maybe some day we'll get a real (32 bit) operating system and we won't have to jump through so many hoops. Or will we be jumping though 64bit hoops in a 32 bit OS ?

If you do write such a beast, I think you should have no trouble finding people willing to buy it. It seems to be common need that I don't think anyone has adequately addressed.
#62770 #Small R3 bugs. Message #62899
Well, I'm glad to hear that my problem is not from 3DS, though it does a good job of revealing it . 3DS is the only program that I have trouble with (in fact, 3DS2 did not display this trouble.) I'll try replacing the Herc card when I can afford…
In the material editor there is a button next to the map file name labeled "S". That bring up a dialog that has a button called "mirror" press that.
#Small R3 bugs. Message #62752
Well, I have a Micronics 486-66 VL bus mb. Hercules Graphite 2Meg VLB. 64meg ram Always SCSI adapter. It has no ram shadowing (or any fancy CMOS settings). It crashes with or without QEMM, even if the only driver running is Hercules' VESA driver (latest version.) Trouble is it takes…

FLI and FLC to AVI ? Message #62749
Thanks. Though isn't it a Mac thing? I hate having to buy software for someone elses computer! Maybe I should get a Mac. Arghh, I'd rather get a couple more PC's and do some net rendering!

What I'd like to do is import some 3DS animations into Macromedia Director. One solution is to convert sequential TGA's into PICT's, then import them into Director, but the only way that I know to do the conversion on a PC is one frame at a time with a paint…

Does this program work with Quicktime? IE. converting tofrom?
From: Ian Christie Autodesk Software Forum · OpSys/Networks October 18, 1993 10:44 PM
I am eXcluding the A000-C7FF that Hercules recommends which would cover the B100-B1FF range. But something is wrong; 3DS crashes periodically – always after changing screens. Sometimes after rendering, sometimes when switching to the material editor. Its particularly annoying because my BIOS has no memory check bypass, so I have…

#61966 #Small R3 bugs. Message #61992
Willdo. Actually, it seems to be a problem involved in display screen switching; today I tried viewing some of the new maps on the World CD and the computer hung up again. Could it be something on Vibrant's end?

I too have been enjoying R3 enormously, but have also had a little trouble. In the first few hours of using R3 it has crashed 4 times; it happens after completing a render, then it either hangs before or after returning to the editor screen. The only escape is with…
