Yes, it it easier, and the geometry is very low in vertices/faces. For cylinders you have control over # of sides and segments.
I sort of fixed it. I just reduced the FOV, enlarged the entire mesh, and lived with the measurment changes. I'm just curious how close an object has to be to get Z-clipped at a setting of "1".

Message #54048
Hi Robert. Sorry it took me so long to respond to you, but I lost some messages when I switched to Wincim. I do like Fractal Paint better than Photostyler for most tasks, but Photostyler is great when I just want to do simple fine tuning. For creating images from…
I would be glad to give you my input on any system you put together, as long as I am familiar with the components. John Tissavary (La Luna cie)
Gary's reply is quite relevant. I think it's IATSE local 16 apprentices' required reading for stagehand journeymanship qualification, but I'm not sure because I came into that local from another one where there was no stage jurisdiction. As far as basics are concerned, I'm sure there are several books out…
3D Studio runs fine under DOS 5 emm386.exe . I used it that way for quite some time untill recently, when I install QEMM. John Tissavary (La Luna cie)
I'm not sure about the printer, but the best way I know of to get hardcopy on any printer is to render your mesh to an image file format like TGA or TIFF, then use third party software like Photostyler, Fractal Paint, or whatever to print it out. John Tissavary…
Oh yeah? I brew exlusively with Jitter Brothers coffee. What's your brand? John Tissavary (La Luna cie)
Thanks for your help, and the further description of your setup. I think I'm on the right track trying to see where QEMM is taking BIOS and upper memory space away from my card. Thanks, John Tissavary (La Luna cie)
NO DOUBT. Computer— Sanity — oxymoron . John Tissavary (La Luna cie)
We did have a nice, although sometimes stressful time. It's amazing how much techno junk can be crammed onto a convention center, and how much stimulus one brain can handle in one day. I'm sure I'll see you at Siggraph next year, and am looking forward to it. And I'm…
I was so impressed I ran out and bought an 8505. So when's the driver going to ship? John "waiting anxiously" Tissavary (La Luna cie)
Woops! I didn't scroll your message down and read the part where you were going to sell him Acad first, and a rendering package second. Pardon my slider button faux pas . John Tissavary (La Luna cie)
Perhaps, if he can't afford to do the walk throughs and renderings in house at first, he could farm them out untill he can afford 3D Studio. I would think that in his position AutoCad would be the priority. John Tissavary (La Luna cie)
I'm definitely interested in the deck — see E-mail I sent you regarding VTR and the Abekas stuff. Abekas IS the way to go for maximum picture quality, and you can't beat the price. PVR here in San Francisco does Abekas transfer at $200/hr, and a company I deal with…

I have never done what you describe, and have always had all resolution modes described in my earlier message available to me. As a matter of fact, I still have them available when I boot up with EMM386 instead of QEMM386. So the question I am posing is: what is…
Hi Jack. There you go again with those simple, effective answers. Don't you know we 3D Studio addicts would rather spend a few hours toiling than use such a simple technique ? John Tissavary (La Luna cie)
Absolutely true about the network. And yes, it was implied, though spending a gagillion hours trying to make a network work a couple of weeks ago had me questioning the whole concept of computers . Try getting a PC to talk to a network of SGI's via a network of…
The targa+ 64 has no 3D Studio advantages. Other than that I don't know what the exact difference is between that and the 32 other than lots of bucks. As far as the Sanyo goes, wait untill some people get their hands on them. I will be checking the unit…
PMJI, but I used to work doing lighting for movies and tv shows and the like. I remember the first time I worked on a really big movie with a ten ton lighting package – that's a package that fits into an eighteen wheeler semi (LOTS of lights!!!). Coming from…
Thanks, David. I tried to set the clipping value from within the configure option, but nothing changed. I'll try your suggestion next. John Tissavary (La Luna cie)
Yeah, the card doesn't need TSRs, and the options in the screen size dialogue box give two VESA options: one at 640×480, the other at 800×600. Sure wish I could figure this out. John Tissavary (La Luna cie)
Thanks for the info. I'll be looking forward to more of Gus's clear explanations. Seems he's about the only programmer out there I can understand. By the way, it was very nice to meet you at SIGGRAPH, and I enjoyed the 3D Studio party very much. John Tissavary (La Luna…
A friend of mine just bought the Watcom kit, and I think he mentioned the Phar Lap support was included. It seems like a more verasatile package, especially considering the price difference, though I don't know enough about programming to give any sort of qualified answer. John Tissavary (La Luan…
There are three ways I can think of right now. The easiest would be to creat a bump map with the letters being darkest, and the "stone" part being lighter. That will cause a receeding effect in the final object. This is good for straight on shots, but if the…
Phar Lap is not only necessary, it is an integral part of 3D Studio. There is no need to modify Phar Lap to any great extent, other than some possible minor tweaks done with a utility that is explained in the installation and performance guide. Lots of RAM, Qemm386, lots…

I just got a Kurta XGT with a cordless, pressure sensetive pen, and it's really great. I use Summa emulation in 3DS, Kurta's ADI driver in ACAD, and it's wonderful. As far as stuff like Fractal Paint goes, I couldn't imagine painting without it. The only qualms I have are…

A close friend of mine works at FTI, here in San Francisco. I do my Abekas transfer to tape there. They are, indeed, a knowledgable, able, and nice bunch of people. They specialize in forensic, high res animations for big lawsuits and the like. When I say big, I mean…
That is the simplest, coolest answer to an animation problem I've heard in a while. Hats off, Jack.
Hi Paul. I saw the deck at the show, too, but was unable to draw any conclusions about it. The Northern California Sanyo rep called me this morning and told me he'd get the first units to dealers in early September. I also mentioned I'd need a test period, satisfaction…

Message #52293
I'm looking for a VTR to do preview and mid-end recording. Anybody selling an EVO, or BVU, or other hi8, 3/4, or S-VHS deck? Also, is the EVO 9650 able to support the upcoming Quickpass for Windows? Thanks in advance, John Tissavary (La Luna cie)
Demo dilemma
Message #51456
Hi Greg. Thanks for the quick response, CIS and phone. I have managed to arrange an alternate scheme for laying our demo to tape, more along the lines of the arrangement I had with my freind who's stuff is at MACWORLD, so I went ahead and committed to that. But…
Hallo, Werner. Biss spaeter, John Tissavary (La Luna cie)
Object unify, normals flip can often fix these "missing" faces. Ususally it is not that they are missing (if the object renders to even some visible ones), but that the normals are flipped away from the camera. Greg's advice on 2-sided materials is excellent, or you could delete and rebuild…

Thanks for the speedy reply. I'm seeing a multi-media dealer in S.F. on monday about a copy of 3DS, and will think about the aapro upgrade, too. John Tissavary (La Luna cie)
You're absolutely right. I have two minds about broadcast quality, and one of them was out to lunch when I wrote that last message. As a matter of fact, I'm working on a client right now with the idea of doing 8-bit flics to genlock over live video, because it's…

I can't imagine producing a (Broadcast ?) commercial using real-time flic playback/NTSC out to go to tape. Single frame is the only way to get acceptable quality as far as I know. You won't have to worry about speed, colors, screen tear, etc… . And you'll get 32bit alpha channel,…

Message #50701
Hi, Christophe PMJI, but the actual resolution for NTSC video is 512×486 (I'm not sure of the exact PAL/SECAM resolution, but it's just a little higher, certainly NOT 640×480). Rendering at higher resolutions that video will support will cause your frame to be cropped when laying to tape. As a…
Try including drive:\path to your filename. But you should be running aawin from windows, and there you would open aawin as an application, then select the file you wish to play from the familiar windows GUI. John Tissavary (La Luna cie)
Will it be possible to convert the Vista and DEMs to ACAD12 (DXF, etc…) then T-grid the model? My partner and I just did a terrain model of a part of the SF Bay Area that was positively useless as a triangle based mesh, but was fabulous as a T-grid.…
