Hi Sean, I'm running QEMM 7.5 and have had no such errors so far. I don't use stealth, since it proved unreliable, so this might be a problem if you use it. Michael
>>same scene on a non-EDO 133 and seen no difference? exactly ! Concerning EDO – if you have no cache, EDO gives you the 10% burst, but if you want to get the best of your money, buy pipeline cache…. and forget edo, it gives around 1% if PCache is…
PMJI, currently I'm working with P133 Triton,96MB……I tried EDO-Ram, but I haven't noticed any visible change, save the horrible price Have you experienced any speedups, and what did you do for it ? Michael
You're not charged for characters, try to write whole sentences, so people will understand you better…. (grin!) Michael
Automatic – Flat Mirror Michael
#Enlarged mirrors
Message #189738
Last week I encountered an odd effect: I was rendering a bathroom with some mirrors with flat auto-reflections. Now some of the mirrors seem to enlarge the scene which is reflected in them. What did I do wrong and how do I correct it Thanks, Michael
Windows multimedia monster. Nice description ! Have it for two days now and love it (save some general protection faults…) Michael
Forget about tablet.com, we use smouse.com for years and had much fun with it (even with lots of emulations: Kontron in summa-mode etc.). There's a nice driver for windows out there too…. Michael
Nik, thanks, I know, this is not exactly your field of action, but I thought 3ds will be exclusively on NT once "R5" is out – there has been a lot of trouble concerning this in former times….. Michael
#3ds R5 ETA ?
Message #183947
Hi Jonas, what is the ETA for R5 ? Thanks, Michael
Thank Jonas, >> face mapping Reliable as ever. It's not completely clear, but I've now got a grip on it…. BTW, another wishlist item : Would be cool if 3DS would scan the mapping paths AND it's subdirs also, so it would be much easier in quickly adding a whole…
Ok guys, work on ! Michael
#Face map answer ?
Message #177459
Hi Yost Group ! Some weeks ago I sent you a mail where I described an odd effect concerning face-mapping. I haven't received an answer yet. Since you have been very reliable in former times, I assume it got lost. Here it is again: ——————————————– I made some experiments with…
Art, If you don't use POWER.EXE, check your BIOS for similar features (they ALL have it, and for god's sake turn it off !). -Michael
Wishlist
Message #174819
Jonas, here's another wishlist item : When you render to a net queue and forget to state a output file name you get neither a warning nor a default one, it would be fine if one of these things would occur, since now the machines are rendering to nirwana (3…
>> I have seen a radiosity renderer for .3DS file that does just that) Do you remember the name of that product? Michael
>> big flat surfaces (panels covering the machine). Then the only thing to do is: render views from the 'panels view' and assign them as reflection maps OR create an automatic reflection map and update it never or seldom (material editor click on 'A' in the reflection-slot and type something…
Dennis, PMJI, do you use automatic reflections on the chrome materials ? If you use a still of your machine as a reflection map (assumed there are no big flat surfaces) you rendering times will plunge down a lot and look very well. Michael
Bill, I've just read my own first message, and I think it has been late that day . What I wanted to say is just that I don't believe it's possible, because there are so many different factors involved. Michael
Only when I can fit that damn thing through my scanner To be serious, better paint it by hand.
Dom, Layered fog works just fine, but you won't get any turbulence from it. I have an idea with transparent layers and animated noise.sxp, I'll check it out. Just make sure you have a nearly fully transparent cone, matching your light cone attached to your torch, material set to 'add',…
>> wonder if it can be uploaded in the Ammedia library… I'll see if its not too large. Would be really great ! I heard about the Photoshop upgrade….. What about Photostyler ? Michael
Have you thought about turning on 'filter maps' in the render dialog ? Michael
Of course ! You can either set up BATCH RENDERING or NETWORK RENDERING on a single machine. Look for these Topics in your manual there are brief descriptions what to do. Michael
>> avalon.chinalake.navy.mil They have moved ! It's now avalon.VISLAB.navy.mil Michael
Hi Phillip, Do what I did ! I'm a student myself and I was lucky enough to find a company that has use for an animator…..fortunately I joined in as a half-time freelancer since they only pay student-fees so there it doesn't pay at the moment 🙁 But there are…
Loren, Try 'render blowup', to fill the resolution with your selected area. Remember, that max resolution is screen resolution if you don't render to "NULL". Michael
Matt, >> blafgfll These are swap files created by the Pharlap Dos Extender. ACAD 3DS and ANIPRO use them. Normally, they are automatically deleted if you leave the application 'proper'. If you boot while in an application these files remain.
I assume you meant browsing 3DS files outside 3D-Studio ?! There's a shareware program called LPARSER that views at least 3DS files under DOS. It's possible, that it's in the Utilities library, if not, mail me and I'll send it to you.
Michael, Solution 1: Make an IFL (image file list) by using: dir /b *.tga >file.ifl Sort the list by number (see SORT-Dos-Command) make two or more Video-Post entries in 3DS like this: file.ifl .———————. append.flc .————————. Render it ! That should make a nice animation. Solution 2: Get DTA (Dave's…

Make the array with "move" not with values, that works !
Bill, I just experienced similar problems while lighting an interior scene. One of the central points are the materials – if you use colors only, you get very different results (usually much darker) than with the same colored mapping. Try to play with the ambient color – it makes a…

#"SCALING" LIGHTS
Message #172545
Hi Gary, here's another one for for your bug-report/wishlist. Since I experienced clipping in an Architectural walktrough I decided to scale the whole scene up to 10000 % (thus getting units in centimeters rather than meters) Therefore I linked *everything* (including cameras and lights) to a dummy and scaled it…
Of course you're right ! Feel free to delete warbird.zip from the preview library – I uploaded it again at ASHOWCASE – I thought this forum was for pictures only. Thanx for clarification, bye Michael
Kyle, thanx for the tip. Hmpf, I seem to be too naive again…. Jonas, I dared to hope for a solution without another third party product. It's a shame that even DOS 6.22 doesn't support more mem, but I thought the Pharlap extender would be bright enough to get it.…
#3ds with 96MB ?!
Message #169437
Jonas, I recently upgraded my P5/100 to 96 MB. Of course, DOS didn't recognize more than 64 of it, so I took out all memory managers (himem/emm386) and tried 3DS – the status box still states only 63345 kb…… Since I'm probably not the only one with such a problem…
Always glad to fulfill your destiny
>> work within the constraints of the system. Thats what I try to push all the time….. No bickering meant, I just wanted to share an oddity we discovered. Michael
Well, I didn't experience it either until Don Newlands brought up that issue during the Studio City scaling ( yes, it's alive !). I even couldn't replay the effect until I pushed a really small object far, far out and THEN rotated it. Michael
Gary, Thanx for the reply, but I'm afraid that helps me as much as white cheese on mars. After experimenting for a while I think I have to correct my question : 3DS stops displaying coordinates at a number of 1.000.000. If you move a small object (1-100 units) out…
3ds coords boundaries ?
Message #166355
Hi Gary, We're currently working on a scale for Studio City 2000 over there on ASHOWCASE and some serious questions appeared. Is there a limit in coordinates that 3ds can use ? We had a discussion about "rounding errors" garbling your mesh when 3ds exeeds a 6-digit margin (100,000). Is…
Glenn, Cool down man ! Don't let yourself confuse by technical details. Simply don't render to 640×480 but to 712×525 (thats for PAL, since I'm from Germany, you should easily get NTSC values if they are not the same) Then render to fields, that does the interlace stuff and put…
ROFL! Next time look IMMEDIATELY in the mirror. If you have marks from your keyboard on your forehead you should check your model closely … 🙂 -M
Look for a tool named VFD. Should be in the utilities library. It's a FLC/AVI cross-compiler that can handle .tga's.
Hi Willy, I'm afraid we're on the far, far edge of the world here. We are dealer in the Frankfurt area and can't get an update either. Sorry, but ADESK Germany seems to be an odd island far of the american world. Michael
Thanks, I'll give it a try, nice work you guy's are doing. Unfortunately in good ol' germany there are only few animators/modelers and they are mostly not in the net, so it's difficult to share experiences….. -Michael
Somewhere in the libraries theres a text file called r3hidn.txt. It states that if you set the environment variable SCREENGRAB to YES 3DS allows to capture the screen with CTRL-PRTSCRN. I haven't tried this at all and don't know if it works in R4, but have a try ! Good…
Would you mind to zip them up and upload them (if allowed) ??? I thought I was complete but the second directory had some interesting names buried… -M
I would just like to add something to what matt had said – he's fine with pricing – I advise my customers to sort their layers so all elements on a layer share the same material – it's not much work for them and spares you the diddling with seperate…
