Same idea as I had. How about creating an animated object using ripple, duplicate it twice, rotate the copies some, make them transparent but shiny, put in a light and a camera and render for the water ripple map? I think it may yield a good result. David T
David – I'd probably render a 1 frame flic of my final object, w/ anti-aliasing off, take it into AAP and tweak it to be an animated opacity map and/or texture map. Clip it (them) as an anim cel(s) and apply the results to the original object in 3DS. Has…

I have those books. They're great! DT
Thank you Phil – a better idea than mine.
Robert – Something like saveable hide lists is easy using the 3 lettered selection sets. Select one set of object with A highlighted and another with B, etc. You can hide all selected… you get the idea. There are anly three, but that's better than none.
How about credible water maps, with the surface at various angles to the camera? Water is always a hassle. Have JKJ show you how texture maps (animated or otherwise) can interact with bump and opacity maps. You could work wonders after a little experimenting. I'd probably buy a CD of…

No, Martin. They moved Istanbul to the Disney theme park in France.

For those of you anal retentives who keep everyone's CIS address somewhere, I will no longer be available at my current address after this Friday (the 14th) due to a change of employment. I'll be back on in a week or so with another address…. As if you care, right?…

Michael – I have MacroModel. I echo most of Jim Murray's sentiments. I have not worked with it a lot, but it *does* have some pretty cool features. For example, you can do a series of profile splines, lay a skin over them, then export the result as a DXF…

James – I'd be happy to help out your client. I'm not sure I should just "take them off your hands", though. As I do this animation stuff 99.5% for my own amusement I'd be unlikely to be able to repay the favor with real employment anytime soon. If you'd…
But, in this case, where there are labels on the front of a stereo and these labels are going to stay put on the front of the thing, is Alpha going to be of any real use? Maybe around the edges of the whole stereo as the camera angle shifts…
Yeah, that's true. OK, OK, I take it back. DT
Oh, I get it. But I guess I was thinking of this a little differently. My plan, which I will never assert as being remotely efficient, was to render the front of this thing in ortho view, use the rendering as the basis of a texture map of the entire…
Whoa, hold on, Poncho! Why does the rendering for placement of labels need alpha information? Aren't you just going to use the rendering to paint the front of this stereo? You could do this and then apply the map to the front faces. What's with the alpha? David {waste another…
>attach a database information to autocad drawings< Oh!! Well, why di'n'cha *say* so?!?
If you're just atlking about images, why not put them on Kodak photo CDs? It's very cheap. FWIW DT
Good tip on the mass SAVE&DELETE, John K. DT
FINally, I gave someone an idea! Jesus! I feel good.
Authorware is an object-oriented multimedia programming/scripting interface. It can call C routines and tap into databases. I saw an impressive set of demos a week or two ago. It's not cheap ($5K), but is VERY easy. There are 9 tools, period. Learning curve is almost nonexistent. If it's not too…
Frank – I'd look into Authorware by Macromedia. Creating kiosk-style interactive information screens is incredibly easy, using graphics, sound, animation, branching logics, you-name-it. FWIW David Taffet
Hey, Holger – Any further developments in the animation group? David Taffet
James – Sizing/placing of maps is much easier if you make sure there's no black around the outside. In an image program like PhotoShop, crop the map right down to the nearest pixel all the way around. In AAPro, clip the map as a cel and use that, rather than…
JKJ – In your scenario, once you're satisfied with the text placement and your bitmap texture/bump map, rather than hiding the text objects, couldn't you save some memory, time, etc. by simply deleting the text objects? Obviously, you have to be *sure* you're satisfied. OR! Save your file, delete everything…
I have been using the Mac version of Navigator for several years and am quite happy with it, FWIW. David Taffet
True enough, but, let's face it; there's no way to tile an image without having the image repeated. That's what tiling means. It's just that it's not so blatantly obvious and, to the casual glance and/or in the right usage, the tiling can become effectively invisible. I've made a few,…
Oh, boy! I *am* a seer, after all! John Ellis, you hear that!
Robert – I have not used *any* utility to see thumbnails on the CD. That's why the uploads of those were helpful to me.
If you are planning to go to videotape, find out ahead of time what the output resolution will be and render to that resolution using the appropriate aspect ratio. As to what happens if you don't, others will have to tell you, as I've never done it. DT
Ed – A tileable map is one that can be tiled without showing seams where the edges come together. DT
The person you have been talking with about Targas is not well informed, if he says they have a resolution of 720×640. They go to 512×486, which is pretty good, but not as high as current network broadcast levels, which are 720×486. The 486 resolution is fixed, for TV, by…
I've downloaded all 3, so far. It's a fantastic time saver and convenience. Much friendlier than the documents on the CD. Here's a wishlist item: a thumbnail viewer built into 3DS that lets one scan any directory's images, in any of the usually supported formats. Save *you* some altruistic hassle…
How do you know there's more you don't know than you do know? By implication, I guess. Are you always sure what your wife will say about a situation? If not, you can be pretty sure you know even less about what someone in a distant galaxy would say about…
Well, John, I confess that there are actually more things of which I have not thought than those of which I have, so I'm not too surprised.
Judy – Talk to Ed Kellerman. He did some pretty nice (albeit flowing) lava with, I think, 4 frames. Don't have his ID, sorry. David Taffet
Follow the rubber line. Please inflate shoes when crossing the water.
Don – Your procedure with the music is a good one. I'm a musician and (ahem…) composer, so I just do my own (in my *free* time ). Watching some of the guns going off in the music industry over non-mechanical, non-performance rights is a trip and a half. *Major*…
Not to derail your railing at Adesk et al, but, can't you put a copy of 3DS.SET out on the network and have each slave copy it onto the local drive in AUTOEXEC.BAT during bootup? Make the change on the master machine. copy it to the net and then go…
And what if you wanted to upgrade your motherboard from an ISA to a VLB? Your BIOS changes and all your software is garbage. Cool!
It's useful, Ralph! Thanks for the drudgery! David Taffet
Debbie – You're utterly correct on the integrity of rotations in Animator. It's not much better in Pro, either, just the pixels are smaller. A better algorhythm is needed there. FWIW David Taffet
KaPWEENG!!! Good shot!
Glenn – I'm no expert, here, but what about a rendering with one shadowed stick video posted over a blurred one without shadows? David Taffet

Personally, I'd like to see the animation come together as an advertisement for the group and its skills, with getting paying work in mind. Any story is fine with me, if we could work it into a stunning presentation. And, IMHO, a long and complicated story is not a good…
