I agree but Gateway, a billion dollar company, soldered in the chips on the Telepath modem and have intimated that if you want to upgrade to a modem that works you have to ship your modem back. That, is when they have a fix. Jim

Texel Technical Support told me I wouldn't have to ship the drive back but that they would ship the new ROM chip and the driver for user installation since the ROM chip is removable. Jim

Jim, you should have MSCDEX.EXE, Ver. 2.21. Mine is 25431 bytes and is dated 2/4/92. The program, MSD, will tell you the version. Also, your problem may be caused by Smartdrv. If you have it installed, type SMARTDRV C- to stop caching of your C drive and see what happens.…

FYI, Byte Magazine, February, 1993, shows CD-ROM player installed base as follows: 1986-9K, 1987-32.5K, 1988-168K, 1989-550K, 1990-1200K, 1991-2500K, 1992-5300K. The data is from InfoTech and represents both commercial and in-house units (whatever that means). Byte also indicates 5000 titles in print. Jim

Alright, I finally found those two files on INDEO, AVI, & VFW. There in the Multimedia Forum, Section 6, DOS/WIndows and are called INDEOP.txt & INDEOB.txt. I'm downloading the VFW Runtime and a couple .AVI files right now. Compuserve doesn't have enough of my money yet this month. Jim

I pruchased a Texel DM-3024 that has worked fine with my Future Domain 850M. Th DM 3024 is a 265ms access, 300KBps drive – faster than any currently available although faster ones are coming. The price is aproximately $419 via mail order for a bare drive. Jim

Agreed. I didn't want to get into details as I don't know them but certainly the mastering process and the disk verification process is significantly more complex for CD-ROMs than for Audio CDs. Jim
