Today IBM announced it will no longer be shipping any Pentium PC's because of the FDIV bug and claims that the bug is "much worse than expected" this is insane. IMHO, this is just a shot at the Pchip from a company that only has the rights to manufacture 486…

scaling DXF's
Message #128464
Sounds like you could use the Displace IPAS from Yost, take the Mac/PC Link/DXF thing out of the equation altogether.
PMJI, I've done animated bullet points as flics (generated in 3DS, modified in AAPro), and as far as I know, the question of making a single color invisible should be addressed by your authoring/presentation software. The short answer to your question is, yes, flics are limited to their bounding box.…
Once you've gotten your fonts in place, select FILE – EXPORT. Choose the Adobe Illustrator (.AI) option for file type and you're set. You'll be prompted for the AI version (I always choose v3.0) and whether you'd like to export text as text or shapes (always choose shapes). Done. Go…
Unfortunately, no, although 3DS does support postscript fonts, there is no support for truetype. I do all of my text work in Corel, and export as .AI files into 3D Studio. m.
Why don't you just create your animations over their appropriate bg's for now, GET THE CONTRACT, then buy Authorware m. P.S. Brian – if your listening – although flics don't support transparency, Macromedia's authoring tools (and others?) allow 0,0,0 to be invisible, ie: chromakey.
You'll have to be more specific as to exactly what you're looking to do, do you want to chromakey over live video? What hardware are you using to do the key? Along another line, and I'm guessing here, but if you're looking to create animations that float over a pre-created…
> limited interaction and seamless transitioning between flc's? For DOS, try Paul Mace Software's Multimedia GRASP, it handles flics well although it's not exactly easy to program. In windows, I love Macromedia's Authorware, it's quite expensive, but you could easily pre-develop games in this one. No matter what authoring software…
Viewpoint Datalabs has meshes of the entire body, all bones, skulls teeth, etc. at vaious detail levels. They can be reached at (801) 224 2222 or fax (801) 224 2272, they can also send you a CD-ROM of all of their meshes, from which you can immediately purchase the ones…
It sounds like your attempting to assign two materials to an object. Objects can only have one material, you need to create your decal material such that it has all of the attributes of green glass as well as the decal texture map. Use you green glass material as a…
The matte will handle compositing the image, true, but the keyer in your switcher is an analog device, and depending on how clean a key it'll do, you can get some edge showing through. I just try to be safe, it really shouldn't matter if the video you're using as…
Reuse you coincident segments, after lofting one set of "puzzle pieces", just join them differently to create the adjacent ones. m.
use the NUMPIC.POC under the POCO pulldown menu (save flics to sequential TGAs) it'll help you avoid carpal tunnel syndrome m.
Maybe not a driver problem, but a memory conflict. Are you using the A000 memory segment for the Targa+? If so, switching to D000 should help, A000 doesn't work with Animator Pro. m.
hey, i used to work for viacom, and most of those people would probably be able to get a job at McDonalds m.
You were right on with the method you intended to use originally. Just render that segment of the animation (the fade in) twice, once in wire, once in solid. Use VP to fade the solid segment in over the wire segment. m.

#Mattes & Video
Message #123832
As John & Glenn said, yes, you'll need to generate a separate "flying matte" tape, but you don't want to turn anti-aliasing off. The softer anti-aliased edge will be much cleaner than a hard aliased edge, with less artifacts. You may also want to render your "image" animation over a…
Save your money for now, cable is going to get a lot more competitive in the next few years. Direct broadcast satellite is almost ready, and the telco's will be cable ready soon enough. Competition will cause prices to drop before you can make up for the cost of your…

I didn't know any models were located in the hole of their CD-ROM. m.
I haven't seen anything that could generate realistic looking rough seas, with breaking waves and such. The complexity goes through the roof as soon as that first drop separates from the breaking wave! Even stuff on the SGI box doesn't really accomodate that degree of random motion in a complex…
Not exactly a cloud generator, but you could useYost Group's Vapor IPAS routine to generate swirling mists which can be flown through. m.
I'm waiting for someone to plant a bunch of cheap IDE drives in a box, build a custom array controller and give me a sub-$5,000 Abekas with NO COMPRESSION m. NRN
3DS cannot output vector data to a plotter like a CAD program can. You can render your wireframes (or anything else) to higher resolutions for output to your Protracer by rendering to a null video display and setting the resolution manually, both settings are in Renderer/Setup in the 3D Editor.…

I assume we get a copy of the issue? So we can bring a little of the "fame and fortune" back here to the colonies? m.
I read that too, and noticed its absence up here. Good idea! m. NRN
the AVID should be able to take the separately generated key (matte) channel and do a PERFECT key, good luck! m.

Lens flare over video ?s
Message #121446
Jim, you won't be able to do a straight luminence key on the ampex with that. Assuming you can sync-roll the decks, your best bet is to render your image on one tape and a matte image on another and use that matte signal as key information on your switcher,…
#timecode wishlist

Wishlist item: how about the ability to display timecode numbers (both drop and non-drop) in the frames slider along the bottom of the keyframer, with a user selectable value for frame zero? Would be quite handy. m.

#flc on >256colour vdu?
Message #121229
I've used Authorware Pro for Windows with flic files without any problems, in fact they seem to work better, and give better results than AVI or Quicktime files. Unfortunately, although your windows display system will support hi/true color, the flic format is limited to 256 colors. I was running APW…
If the logo is truly stopped by the time the fade is called for, just render it (logo) over a white background and fade this still image in over your final frame in Video Post. As long as the logo is not moving and identical, only the background will appear…
The problem your having relates to palette control. As each of your partial flics is rendered, 3DS optimizes the 256 color palette for that flic. When you join these flics, (or TGA's, GIF's, whatever) 3DS must compute an entirely new palette for the resulting complete animation. In most cases this…
I don't know if smoke.pxp can be looped but here's an easy work-around that may help..(?) Try rendering out 25 frames of your animation to files on disk. In Video Post, progressively blend the first five images into the last five images. ie: at frame 20, you'll have 80% of…
are you the harry dusenberg from the phila area? if so, try calling Martha Lubow at Synergis Technologies, 215 643 9050, she can help you out with all the IPAS stuff. m. PS: didn't I sell you animator pro way back when? I was at Bolder Designs then.
If this is the same PC-VCR which has been out for a few (3-4) years, it's not single frame accurate, I think it's something like +/- 5 frames. m.
break your flics out into gifs m.
