>>You seem to have one of the faster 120s — do know if you have an unobstructed, full-length PCI slot (for a PVR) in there?
I believe it is a Triton chipset. No problems with both types of ram installed together. Also, the rendering times I posted were reported by 3DS at the command line. The times posted in the dialogue box were about 4 seconds faster. -Rich Barnett Animotion

Does anyone know of a way to create a 640×480 flc in Animator Studio or Animator Pro, with the palette limited to Windows' 16 colors?
#Reflections in the Water
Message #187487
Anyone know of a good way to achieve nice, blurry, wavy reflections in water? I'm modeling a harbor scene and need to show reflections of boats, docks, etc in the ocean in a realistic manner. I tried bumping the reflection blur to the maximum value, but it still looks very…

Shock Factory and Animotion are teaming together to produce an interactive tutorial CD-ROM on Autodesk's new Animator Studio program. The CD-ROM will contain tutorials for all of the key features in Animator Studio. One feature of the CD-ROM is a "Gallery" of examples from people using Animator Studio. If you…
It looks like you'll be faced with the same problem I had… and I was never able to achieve the result I was looking for. However… Ted Boardman from this forum was kind enought to offer the following technique, which may work for you: Make instances of each of the…
#AAS movs wont play in QT
Message #175619
I can't seem to play AVI files converted to Quicktime format with Animator Studio. I'm using the player.exe program with Quicktime for Windows 2.0. On one of my machines, the .mov file causes a General Protection Fault. On another, the .mov appears, but just plays as a white movie. I'm…
AAS Users in So Cal?
Message #175427
I'm interested in working with someone in the Southern California area on an Animator Studio-related project. The right person must be fairly proficient with AAS, and have some prior experience with Animator Pro. Please contact me via Compuserve, or voice at 714.366.1982.
Thanks for the tip.

What if someone came out with a slick, interactive CDROM that contained screen movies of all the important functions – with really valuable examples?
Now there's an enlightened idea.
Easier said than done. Did you try it on the model?
Escalator Challenge!
Message #170755
I'm trying to animate the steps of an escalator, but not having much luck. I've uploaded the mesh – escalatr.zip – into library 4 (meshes/project files). The first step is animated correctly. I just need all of the other steps to follow it along the path in time. If anyone…
Ted, Well, I've tried everything, and can't get these steps to behave correctly. I uploaded a file "escalatr.zip" into Library 4 if you want to take a look at it. If someone can solve the problem, I'll donate the mesh and animation into the library permanently. -Rich
My 120 is working fine now that I disabled the power.exe file in the autoexec.bat. But, get this: Dell disabled any access to advanced CMOS setup features. They said people were screwing things up too much. I have no access to cache on/off or wait state settings.
Angh, he's always been able to get around there fast. Andre is going good. I'm amazed how little nose cone testing there is going on with these speeds and all.
The problem is that when you copy an object's tracks to another object, the path itself offsets to the center of the 2nd object. So if the steps are delta: x=11" & y=6", then the path delta will be the same. I'm trying to figure out how all of the…
Well, I unpacked this thing, loaded a 15mb project file, and it was hanging during the "transforming objects" phase of the renderings. Brian here in tech support correctly told me to remove a file called "power.exe" from my autoexec.bat, which is some sort of power/idle management/green utility. I did, and…
Nope. It has a Number Nine 9FX Motion 771 PCI board w/2MB VRAM. Apparently, it's the latest board from NN.
Major.
Hey, I'm still kinda having some weird problems. In the Materials Editor, if I click on the NONE bar to the right of Texture Map and select, say a TIF file, it takes about 10 seconds for the name of the selected file to appear in the space. It takes…
No instances, but yes, large texture maps. Turned out it was the power.exe file, though. Another 32MB of ram is next on the list-so many things to buy, so little time, so little money!
If you are, and your name is Brian, you're scaring me.
Thanks, Ted, I'll give it a try.
Brian, if you were a girl, I'd kiss you.
#Animating an Escalator
Message #169143
Ideas anyone? I'm trying to animate the steps of an escalator. Each step emerges from a floor plane, travels forward a couple of feet, ascends the height of the escalator at a constant angle, levels out, travels forward a couple of feet, then goes down into the escalator to travel…
Dell P120 crashes

Brian, it looks like it really is locking up. Did it on the next frame to render.
My Dell P120 is locking up. I'm a very sad guy.

Brian, my machine "reawakened" and continued into the rendering just as I was sending you the first message. At any rate, the progress bar didn't move in the "Transforming Objects" dialogue for a good 20 minutes. What's going on?

Brian, I just hooked up my new machine and it crashes in the "Transforming Objects" portion of rendering in the R4 keyframer. The machine is a Dell XP Pentium 120 with 32MB EDO ram, IDE 1GIG HD, Number Nine 9FX Motion 771 2MB VRAM PCI graphics board, etc. My project…
I just got it in last week. There are probably about 15 poses that are appropriately "normal" – so I think it's worth the $95. I bought it direct from the company that publishes it-Digital Wisdom at 804-758-0670.
Thanks for the info.
Thanks, Gary. The texture map is already 2400×2400, but I'll try resampling it to 4800×4800 and smoothing the offending areas. Interestingly, the amount of blur increases as it gets closer to the camera. Also, do you have any knowledge of a plug-in that allows for AVI type texture maps? -Rich
#Blurry texture maps
Message #159168
I'm getting alot of texture blurring on objects that are in the foreground of a perspective view. I've tried a couple of obvious changes to get rid of this, including setting the blur value to 0 in the texture map setting dialogue box. Anyone have any ideas?
hey, how'd you do those fancy letters?

Imagine my surprise, when after rendering 5250 frames of a 450,000 face project on 11 machines in 3 different friends' companies, during the LAST 30 DAYS, I realize that the Gamma On/Off setting is not saved with a project. Oh boy, that was REAL FUN. Am I an idiot, or…
Albert, Thanks for the info. I did get a return call from 3DO yesterday afternoon. Gene, the developer relations lady, said that they had a developers kit available for $8000. It does sound like it's Macintosh-based, but I'm sure it can include FLC type stuff also. She is sending me…
Albert, I called 3DO several days ago, to find out info, but had to leave a message and haven't heard anything back yet. I know that a couple of companies, like Trilobyte and Crystal Graphics are using Animator Pro/3D Studio to develop 3DO titles, so there must be a way….…

The CD is tentatively scheduled for a November 1st ship date. We believe the price will be Retail $395.00. I don't believe that it will be distributed through dealers, just because I'm a small outfit, and I don't think I have the time to support a large distribution network. That's…

I downloaded a flic player about a year ago, but it was junk. I know there is something available, you just have to dig for it. Also a program called Debabilizer is available for about $275 that will convert flc files to PICS animations. -rich
