Greg: Oops. Thanks for the info (and correction) on Abekas. The people always pronounce it abacus instead of abeekus! What do I know, I've never seen one up close! . Are 4mm DATs supported? Do post production houses have these tape drives? The 8mm's are 'old models' and we are…
#Flic transfers
Message #184214
All: What is the media that you would recommend that we get to send flics to post production houses? (The 'old' standard being an 8mm Exabyte tape with Abacus software…). Is there a standard, now? Or, is everyone using PARs? Thanks in advance. C#
Mike. Thanks alot. I will give them a call. C#
Thanks, Ted. I think I saw Raster Print in the AutoCAD companion catalog. C#
#Raster Printing
Message #174901
I would like to know what anyone would recommend as a windows based raster printing image handler that will print to the large format color plotters such as HP Designjet, Summa, Encad Novajet III, and LaserMaster. I don't really need image editing… I just need something that has really good…
Jeremy: Thanks. I was simply implying that it didn't seem to me that it was possible that the product couldn't run under Windows 95 but rather it was one of those >features< that might need some review . No harm meant. It's a great product. C#
What?!!? How do you develop a product that runs under Win 32s that won't run under Windows 95? Man, I wish Autodesk would follow someone else's rules once in a while instead of trying to create their own standard all the time. |:( I expected that from the ACAD group…
#Win 95
Message #173603
Is anyone running Animator Studio under Windows 95? All the components are working except for AS itself on my computer. When I try to load the program the opening screen image stays on screen and I hear an error chime but I can't see the error message so I don't…
Dave: I was running with nothing in the config.sys file except files and buffers. I didn't need the shell because I don't have that many paths to set when running 3DS. I'm not interested in disabling two computers to get to the bottom of this right now… I can bypass…
Dave: The only two things that have changed are the computer (from a Dx66 with a Genoa VL24) to a P90 with an STB Nitro and an upgrade from Animator Pro 1.3 to 1.3a. Prior to these two changes everything worked fine. C#
Dave: Yep. I'm going to do the numpic thingo if I can't figure out what the problem is. This is a P90, 32M, STB Nitro. It may be a VESA mode incompatability… The first place I'm going to look it the graphics card. C#
Dave: I made the movie TWICE. The same error occurred. It is not file corruption. It is a problem with this machine or a compatability (software bug) problem, or a problem with my methodology. C#
Brian: Thanks. I thought about numpic but didn't have the time to do that… what I DID do was simply not do anything else in Anim Pro and let it load the flic from the temporary files. I was able to play it, etc. I just can't save it… not…
#Anim 1.3a & 3ds 3.0 flcs
Message #161704
I probably just missed something but I recently updated my Animator Pro to 1.3a and when I open a flc that was written by 3DS 3.x and do any edits, I can't save the flc. Animator tells me that the flc is corrupted. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong? C#
Todd: Thanks. It was so easy to scale the mesh with the surfacing software that I was using that I didn't even think about using 3DS. I appreciate everyone's help. C#
John (and everybody else who chimed in) Thanks. I >think< that the software that I'm using for the terrain modeling actually amplifies in the Z direction and the increase in Z value is proportional instead of uniform, but I'm not sure. If it's uniform (I will check) then I can…
Jonas (and Martin): These are 3dface surface meshes of topographic data that is created in AutoCAD. The only, and I repeat, the only difference between the two is the Z coordinate (I have my axes switched in 3DS). Even the ORDER of the creation of the 3dfaces is the same.…
#Morphing
Message #156456
I'm trying to morph from one mesh to another. The meshes are topos of land. The coordinates of each and every vertex are EXACTLY the same except for the Z value. What I get looks terrible. I'm using v3.x of 3DS. Anyone have any suggestions? Is it because I don't…
#3DS R3
Message #92010
Hey, guys… Sorry I can't be around much right now, but if CIS ever gets a 9600 baud line here in Roanoke, I will be back in full force.. . I just want to say that using R3 is sheer pleasure. I have recently completed an animation of a pair…

Todd: Yes, that would be the case. I don't believe that Animator Pro is DPMI compliant… Thanks for the info. C#
David: The only problem I have ever had with DOS 6.0 was when I used the multiple configuration options. Now, I may have done something wrong (me? nah…) but I had a mess on my hands right away (some of my windows programs started mashing their data files…). Other than…
Alan: Yep… what I just said to G. There is a DEFINITE improvement in the product for use in architectural modeling. I can't wait to have alot of free time and a decent design to work with… plus some new hardware. Anybody got an idea for creating a winning Lotto…
G: Yes, I agree… but I don't like soft shadows in presentation output (still rendering is the only place I would use ray traced shadows…). The contrast is important to the presentation. I also didn't mean to sound like I was criticizing. The difference between 2.0 and 3.0 looks pretty…
BTW… liked your stuff on the Siggraph tape. In fact, anybody who's watching (sherwood, greg, richard, michael, etc…) you all did some GREAT work over the last year. C#
Thomas: He can get a copy of Multimedia Explorer for something like $150 (I don't know what the latest price is…). If he likes what he sees, then he can upgrade to Animator Pro (basic Animator comes with the MM Explorer.). 3D Studio and Animator Pro are being used to…
Alan: It appears to me that the rendering speed increase of 3.0 is just about balanced by the slowdown required for the ray traced spotlights… and it also appears to me that all architectural modelers will want to use the ray traced spotlights for exterior shots. Note that this is…
Martin: Is that rate for the transfer from Exabyte (sp?) tape? (Pac Vid $200). C
John: I don't think that there are any books out that cover the upgrade. The differences aren't radical and the manuals are excellent, so you may not need another book… anim cels are something that you might like to see more of, as well as the use of POCO, but…

Alec: Where did you learn Arabic? I only speak enough to get by at the Souk! . Actually, I've forgotten most of it… C#
Alan: Just because all other apps work fine when you're using QEMM that doesn't mean that 3DS will… if you said that all other apps that you have that use PharLap Dos Extender work fine, then you might have told us something that would let us provide a clue. The…
Michele: VL allows you to set up cameras, lights, materials, smoothing, and mapping coordinates in your AutoCAD drawing and then write a 3ds file directly. While I'm not yet a VL expert, I don't think that any heirarchy other than what constitutes an object made up of elements is translated.…
Mary Jane: I'm sorry, but I'm jumping in to this thread late… If you're using DOS 6.0, create the config.sys file so that you can have two optional setups (see your DOS 6.0 manual) at boot up. One of the setups should not use Himem.sys or emm386.exe at all… that…
Pat: No… not that I know of. Their prices aren't out of line with experiences that I have had with others. You can modem in or overnight or mail your stuff to them, no problem. They are primarily Mac based but they have 'banks' of drives that lets them read…
Greg: It has been my experience that if you >know< you are going to page to disk, 3DS does much better WITH a disk cache… I have a 15ms hard disk and I still notice a considerable difference when I render those high res film images. C#
Brian: I would think that the 'resolution' is based on the film recorder, which would be either 4000 lines or 10000 lines. Obviously, if you are using a 4000 line recorder, then resolution of the original file couldn't exceed 4000×4000 except that some software will do a good job of…
very poor support
Message #48325
Bob: You replied to me, but I >think< your reply was meant to add to what I said to the individual that was concerned about product support. I suggested that he contact Ms. Bartz if he didn't agree with the policy. I didn't mention the contract support since it is,…

#THIRD PARTY DRIVERS
Message #47814
Most of the 24x cards, if not all, will come with a driver for 3D Studio and for Windows. You will need a 24 bit paint program to see files in 24 bit color, more than likely, other than in 3DS by doing a rendering.

Broadcast output options
Message #47811
Welllll… I'm probably out of school, here, but when I was out there I heard rumors of this driver… seems I recall that you can write directly from 3DS to the tape with the driver, instead of to disk and then to tape… I'm sure you will get an official…
David: Those of us who read about 200-400 messages a day care alot. Formatting your letter as if you were conducting business instead of doing CAD work or programming makes it much easier for us to read the messages. C#
Warren: Autodesk does not directly support its products except informally (and probably your best and complete option) through this compuserve forum and via your dealer. If you think this policy is in err, I would suggest that you write Carol Bartz, CEO, Autodesk Inc., 2320 Marinship Way, Sausalito, Ca… C#
Uh… you know some guy that mastered 3DS in two weeks? Acckk! I think the reason that books aren't coming out is that it's hard to present the material in a book and it's nearly impossible to keep up with the hardware and software releases. I have sat down to…
Keith: Alan Inglesias or Martin Foster… you could check with the Sysops… Joe McRae often keeps old messages. Your message should have scrolled to your email box if you didn't pick it up. Messages don't hang around here forever… C#
James: I didn't say it didn't work… They don't feel that the market is there… although they certainly may have changed their minds. I use Quicksurf and it is one of the best pieces of software add-ons that I have ever encountered for AutoCAD. The documentation is really weak, but…
Joe: First, I wouldn't be too concerned about Imagine Interface from Schrieber… I think they have stopped marketing the product. Second, I don't think you are looking at VL with the proper perspective… but I must first admit that I don't have my copy yet even though I have >some<…
Mike: I don't think that they do work… nor can they, unless you are able to create a scalar relationship between the sample cube or sphere and the map. That's why I say it doesn't do any good to run the mat editor in high res for many applications… you…

3D Studio with DOS 6
Message #44364
Marion: I think that many of the problems are with mem maker, not emm386.exe. I have run 3ds 2.01a with DOS 6.0 with no problems. I didn't do my install with mem maker, however. C#
Joe: Just explode the blocks for the time that you use VL. There are a number of LISP routines that will do this… Better yet, make your use of AutoCAD match the way that your model will be exported to 3DS… not fun, I know, but necessary if you want…

Nik: Thanks. I would guess that they didn't anticipate giving away 30% of their circulation . C#
Steve: Well… I create different surface maps for different resolutions because a high res map for a 4000 line 35mm slide output looks pretty ugly at 320×200 when it's scaled to fit that resolution. I still use the same number of pixels per inch solution, though, so your idea would…
