Glen, I'll forward your question up the ladder to the tech support people. I'm not familiar with any of the Sony videodisc players or of any computer-related projects involving them. Chuck
Mike, Can you give me some more specifics about exactly what you've tried with the 31A driver, and how it is failing? Are you trying to install OS/2 2.1 off of the CD-ROM, or do you already have it installed and you're just trying to add support for the 31A?…
Jim, The BBS number for Sony is 408-955-5107. They have a single line, so it is frequently busy, but keep trying. Also, they've just moved into a new facility in San Jose and the phone system has a lot of problems. When you finally get connected, you'll find the latest…
Cecil, >> When will the FINAL RELEASE of the DRIVER for this CD Drive be released?>Will there be any improvements? What?>Will you post on CIS more detailed information on the installation and use of the current BETA DRIVER? For example, the IFS file, the right version for MSCDEX, and etc.>But,…
Steve, What's the model number of your CD-ROM drive? Chuck
Niall, I know that the 1542A required that the port address be set at 330h for BIOS operation, but I don't know if later models of the 1542 loosened this requirement. You might want to send a mail message to John Lloyd of Adaptec (CIS ID 70714,3214) – he's usually…
Merrick, I'll forward your question to the technical support people in San Jose. Chuck
James, Wayne has been shuttling back and forth between our office and Redmond the past few weeks, so he's either misplaced your message or he missed it completely. Since he's currently out of the office for a while, I'll answer for him. The 31A driver will not work with your…
#uploaded file
Message #49820
There may have been two files named 31A_NT.EXE uploaded here. The correct file to use is 38287 bytes in size. Sorry about the mixup.
Yes, my mistake. The driver will be posted here. Also you had asked about support for older drives: 535 etc. This driver only supports the Sony CDU-31A drive. I don't know what's being done to support the other drives, sorry. I'll try to get an answer for you from the…
Mike, The beta NT driver for the 31A has been uploaded to the MSWIN32 forum, library 13. It may not be available for downloading yet, but keep looking – it should be there any day now. Good luck! Chuck
CDU-31A NT driver
Message #49658
The file: 31a_nt.exe has been posted in the MSWIN32 forum lib 13, Windows NT DDK. It's a self-extracting zipped file containing a Beta test version of a device driver supporting the Sony CDU-31A CD-ROM drive under the Microsoft Windows NT(tm) operating system. This is a BETA release for testing purposes…
Bob, Actually, the OS/2 driver in SONY31.ZIP will work with only the CDU-31A and CDU-7305 drives. The CDU-531 and the CDU-7205 fall into the same category as the CDU-535 – an OS/2 driver is being written, but not by Sony. I'm not sure when it will be available. Chuck
Blake, The CDU-6201 _is_ in the same category as the 535, so hopefully any drivers for the 535 will also work on the 6201. Chuck
Merrick, The only information I have on the 535 is that an OS/2 2.x device driver is being developed by a third party (not Sony or IBM) and that driver will probably be available sometime in the near future. I'm not aware of any plans for the 535 under Windows…
Sorry to take so long to get back to you – I had to track down the right people to answer your question. Apparently there are some issues that need to be resolved before the driver can be made available for testing – I couldn't get a definite answer from…
Sony 31A/PAS-16 install
Message #46945
Finally, some success! Everyone who's been having trouble installing OS/2 off the CDU-31A that's attached to the Media Vision PAS-16 board, please take note: Add the switch /W:0 to the DEVICE=MVSOUND.SYS line in your DOS CONFIG.SYS file. Reboot DOS so that the driver is installed with this switch, then do…
Eric, I think I have some good news. Try the following: edit your DOS CONFIG.SYS file – add the parameter /W:0 to the install line for MVSOUND.SYS. boot DOS so that MVSOUND installs with this new parameter NOW try installing OS/2 off the CDU-31A. I spoke to Ken Nicholson of…
Cecil, I'm glad to hear you're up and running. The 31A isn't a speed demon by any stretch of the imagination, so I would guess that you'll see sluggidh performance if you run applications directly off of the CD. What kind of problems have you seen with the PAS-16? Chuck
Mark, We're going through the final stages of our in-house testing for the 31A/NT driver. Watch the NT and CDROM forums for an announcement within the next couple of weeks. Chuck Roman Software Engineer Sony
Hi Kyrie, You can run with one or the other, but not both? The first thing that comes to mind when I read that is that maybe you have both drives configured for the same SCSI ID. Another idea is parity checking – make sure everyone on the bus (including…
Eric, Actually, I replaced the BASEDEV line for the AHA152x driver with one for the 31A. I'm going to try an install on another system today to make sure I can successfully install over DOS 5.0. Did you use dual boot or boot manager when you had OS/2 2.0 on…
Roland, Thanks for the problem reports – I'm looking into some problems with audio CD's, and I hope to have fixes soon. Chuck
Eric, Hmmm, let's back up a ways. You're trying to install OS/2 2.1 March beta from CD-ROM. You're installing over MS-DOS? Which version? You have a Media Vision PAS-16 board with the 31A interface on-board, and you can access the CD-ROM from DOS. I can see from your DOS CONFIG.SYS…
Hi, Lu Sorry, I'm not aware of any openings in your area of interest – maybe someone else in the forum can help. -car-
Dave, Sorry you're having problems. Two requests: 1) Could you show me the lines in your DOS CONFIG.SYS file that pertain to the PAS16 board and the 31A ? 2) When you modified the CONFIG.SYS on the OS/2 install diskette, where did you put the line for the 31A driver?…
Eric, Geekers, I'm really getting stumped here – only one question left. What does the line in your DOS CONFIG.SYS file that installs the 31A driver look like? -car-
SYS0318 error w/ 31A
Message #46259
Eric, >> removed the lines for any other CD-ROM drives.

Michael, There is a Windows NT driver for the CDU31A in the works. I'll make an announcement in this forum when the beta version is available for general distribution (hopefully sometime in the next few weeks). Thanks for your interest. Chuck Roman

Hi Eric, Sorry to take so long to get back to you, but I spent the whole weekend fighting a really nasty head cold (when a nose the size of mine gets congested, it's a _MAJOR_ problem). You should be able to install from the CD-ROM if you follow these…
