Glad to be back…well, sort of. I'm preparing for AU. Yes, I'll be there. Instructing no less! Let's definitely get together. Of course, there's always the speaker reception. Jh
PMFJI, I contine to use AAS 1.1 in NT everyday. However, I gotta stress that 1.1 has been tested primarily for Win95. There are still some issues that need to be worked out in order for AS to work _fully_ in NT. Sorry if some of this has been mentioned…
#194123 Sentinel Pro Dongle Message #194352
Glad to hear it! Have fun with 3DS… Jh
#193361 #Sentinel Pro Dongle Message #193460
Hard to say. Hook up your printer and try this in DOS: dir > prn If that doesn't work, then your parallel port is either not connected inside your computer(for some reason) or the port has gone bad(it's been known to happen). Hope this helps… Jh
PMFJI, You can usually run AniPro in 320×200 mode in an NT DOS window w/o any problem. However, when you try to run using a VESA mode, that classifies as a direct hardware access which NT gives a big NO-NO to. Unfortunately, there's really no way around this in NT.…
Are you rendering a FLIC or targa's? FLICS have no alpha information, but, of course, 32-bit .TGA's do. The only way to composite a flic is to use a key color which acts as transparent when compositing. Authorware has this doesn't it? Jh
#190960 3DS and LAPTOPS? Message #191030
Steven, The first thing to do when trying to purchase a computer is to analyze your needs now AND into the future. The unfortunate thing about notebook computers is that they can be a bit restrictive in terms of expandability. If you're working somewhere where's there's no power, this is…
#189631 flashing effect Message #190229
Craig, You could also use the lightman KXP script to control the spotlight for strobing effects. (I do alot of aviation animations and needed that one!) Jh
#189738 #Enlarged mirrors Message #190228
Michael Were you rendering with Automatic Reflections or using a Flat Mirror? Jh P.S.-I never use automatic refelctions for planar objects(ie. mirrors).
This is an easy one, Ken. Set up everything as you were(resolution and all) and before you render, activate the "No Display" button by clicking on it. You should be good to go. What's happening is that even though 3DS is trying to render at your resolution, you're also telling…
#190204 Max Render Farm? Message #190221
While it hasn't been decided, probably the most practical protocol is the Microsoft Network NetBEUI. You don't need any new hardware and the computers just start talking to each other. Makes sharing computers and drives a real joy! Jh
#187762 3d max biped Message #187797
Frank, I posted a message earlier. I did all of the Biped demos at SIGGRAPH and never once said that Biped would ship with 3D Studio MAX. I did, however, say that Biped was the first fully-integrated plug-in for 3D Studio MAX. As Kevin pointed out, Autodesk has been clear…
#187510 3d max biped Message #187539
Err….guys. No decision has been made on this. Biped and Skinemation are a combo product, but whether or not to include them with MAX has not been decided. Nor has its final price. Jh BTW-I did all of the SIGGRAPH Biped demos, and the only statement I made about Biped…
#187459 #Why MAX name? Message #187471
Yeah, we keep 'em locked up here in the marketing dungeon. Maybe we should let them out in the sun every now and then? Jh
#187244 #Why MAX name? Message #187358
Yep. MAX is his name. Cute, huh? Jh
#187338 #Win 95 Question Message #187357
Just as a bit of info, I don't believe that plug and play will be a part of the new WinNT- just the new 95 shell. Since NT is modular, it's much easier to replace the user interface than it is the underlying hardware interface architecture. The next version of…
#187173 #NT Virus Alert Message #187269
Yep, ANTIEXE is a sneaky one. There's also the FORM virus and it's flavors that seemed to be spawned from the ANTIEXE. Isn't that cute? Viruses reproducing. Jh
#187170 NT Virus Alert Message #187268
You need to get out more Bob… Jh
#186971 NT Virus Alert Message #187028
Yep. You can bet that if NT starts acting funny(or not at all), it's a boot sector virus which is mainly transmitted when you're using DOS and accessing some floppy diskette. NT won't allow any program to write to the boot sector, so the only way for this to happen…
#186718 Max vid drivers? Message #186825
Hmmm…don't know about that. I wonder if it'll be necessary? Jh
#186536 Max on Millennium ? Message #186606
Ernie, Luckily both software(drivers) and hardware can be improved to get better performance from video cards. I think you'll start to see that alot in the coming months as MAX makes it debut and pushes the envelope. Since NT is only an operating system, it can't really be improved along…
#186170 Max on Millennium ? Message #186178
Kenneth, MAX just uses the drivers from Windows NT. It's not necessary to have application-specific video drivers now. Jh
I grew up there and now live in S.F. Gotta say that N.O. has had its moments! You're right though, SIGGRAPH next year will be awesome. Somehow though, I've gotten appointed official Autodesk tour guide!? Oh well, it'll be fun. Jh
#184522 MAX DEMO Message #184887

#184504 3DS Max WIn95 version Message #184882
I didn't write it, just demo'ed it, but thanks! Jh
#184489 #MAX DEMO Message #184498
Oh come on, I lived in N.O. most of my life and I remember a "cajun" snow just a few years ago. We had our share of cold spells. Bascially, winter in New Orleans is when it isn't 95 with 100% humidity at 6:00am. That's when your copy will arrive!…
#184452 The next 3DS- MAX Message #184497
Biped will be a separate product published by Autodesk. To be honest, we haven't decided on a price yet. And yes, it is VERY COOL! Jh
We were showing MAX in WinNT 3.51 with the Windows 95 shell, not Windows 95. Jh
The best way is to just time the sound using a stop watch and enter that time into the new file dialog box. Jh
#180574 #Ipas Help Message #180700
You could also write a script if you have release 4 that checks the object's distance and changes it's color appropriately. You'll need to get the other script extensions from Schreiber Intrustments, though(and beef up on you BASIC programming skills). Jh
#180014 #Lighting Model Message #180093
Peter, If you're trying to simulate radiossity(bounced light), you may be in for a challenge. 3DS does not calculate bounced light. However, it can be faked quite well. To get the angle of the sun, there are a few programs out there that do it. There's a routine from Greg…
Alan, I've played around with several cards over the past 6 months or so- some specific to Windows. I've met with pretty good success using Diamond and ATI's products. Since it looks like you'll be using DOS for a while, I'd wait to see what comes down the road in…
#179467 system hang Message #179490
PMJI guys, but I've encountered this problem before and it was defintely the driver. I remember fixing it by switching the Flic-Playing driver to VESA. Try this out and let us know what happens… Jh
Alan, What OS are you running on and what OS do you plan to run on in the next year or so? Jh P.S. – You might try logging on as _your_ name instead of visitor if you're going to post messages. We want to know who you are!
#179275 #Turf Map ? Message #179442
Luka, Grass and organic textures are everywhere. We kind of start you out by providing a few on the World Creating Toolkit as David mentioned, but you might also want to check the back of trade magazines like Computer Graphics World or Morph's Outpost for vendors provding a more extensive…
> Do you have any other keyframes for the lights other than at frame 0? Check Track Info to see if you've created any other keyframes for those lights in your animation. Jh
#178020 #tablet doesn't work Message #178028
Sonny, What makes you think that it's not the Wintab driver? Even if AutoCAD uses Wintab, it doesn't use pressure sensitivity which is the likely culprit. I understand your frustration, but it's not always the fault of one particular company or group of programmers. Sometimes things just don't work together-…
#177746 #Anim.Studio&PAR Message #177885
Byron, Thanks for the input. Sorry about the marketing dump on you-we're just so excited about Animator Studio! Jh
#177115 Anim.Studio&PAR Message #177179
Marc, Different animals, same problem though. I'm not an expert on the FAST system, but a quick (& temporary)solution for the PAR is this: 1. Save out your animation as sequential images from AAS to a non-PAR hard drive. 2. Use the PAR's software in DOS to assemble the sequential…
#177134 Win 95 Message #177177
Mohammed, The fix will probably be available here but I can't really say when. In any case, I know what you're going through(Autodesk has several copies of Win95) and we're working to get a solution quick. Jh
#176952 Memory / Sound issues Message #177176
Funny, I was at Westwood's presentation with BobB and even at the party(can't miss 'em). You missed out on the introduction to Animator Studio(taught by me). I figured you show since you might need a little brushing up on the software. Oh well, looks like SIGGRAPH. 🙂 See you then……
Oh yeah, where were you? We you just "lurking". Hmph, didn't even say hi! Jh
#176319 Anim.Studio&PAR Message #176431
Mark, Unfortunately, the PAR is not supported in r1.0 of Animator Studio. We are aware of the problem and are looking at options for supporting it. As a work around now, you can try Peter's suggestion of saving out to sequential .TGA's and then dumping them to the PAR. I…
Thorsten, How would you like to distribute your animations? With the popularity of real time playback devices like the DPS Personal Animation Recorder, many people are putting their animations to video tape. It's convenient, fairly fast, and you're almost guaranteed that your client has a VCR to play them back…
Bob, Make sure your display is set to 256 colors. Transitions won't work in anything higher since they would take too long to process. Jh
Andrew, I haven't seen it in a while, but Corel had a product called CorelTrace that traced raster images and saved them as .CDR(CorelDRAW!) files which you could then export as .DXF's. It's probably still part of their CorelDRAW! suite which I believe is on version 5 or 6 right…
George, There are two programs Animator Pro and Animator Studio which compliment each other and 3D Studio. Their primary function when working with 3D Studio is creating texture maps and doing some special effects. Both are excellent 2D paint packages. There are a few differences though. For dealing mainly with…
#175253 AS and MOV format? Message #175326
Steven, I'll leave this one to Nik since he's got the released version of Animator Studio on his machine. Jh BTW-I just tried saving ABOUT.AVI as a .MOV file. It worked fine except the audio was a bit messed up. It played in the Animator Player-haven't tried it in media…
#175216 tablet doesn't work Message #175237
John, I've run across this using tablets in several painting programs. (This also happens in Fractal Painter) The common link seems to be WINTAB.DLL. Apparently it resets your tablet's active area when you start a program that uses it. It's hard to say exactly what feature of the software packages…
#175038 GPF's in SoundLab Message #175057
Ed, Interesting problem. SoundLab is the most stable of all of Animator Studio's modules. Just a few questions: 1. What exact step are you crashing on? (On page 206 there are 11 different steps over 3 sections) 2. What type of sound card are you using? 3. Have you had…
