Martin, I just got my Dir Opus 4.0 upgrade today. It was shipped on 12/16/92, but I just got it on 1/7/93, which is 22 days later! It should NOT have taken over 3 weeks to arrive. Since I am in the Auto-Upgrade Club, I should have been one of the first people to receive it. I looked at the shipping label and my zip code was incorrect. Maybe this accounts for the delay. My name is Dominick J. Fontana and my CORRECT zip code is: 11367. You had the incorrect zip code of 11387. That is, you had an 8 instead of a 6. Please let me know if you need more information in order to make the correction. Please correct my address in your list for the Auto Upgrade Club, then advise me that you have done so. I want to be absolutely certain that the correction has been made, so I don't have to wait over 3 weeks for the next upgrade. I'll leave my comments on 4.0 after I have checked it out. Thank you. Dominick, I have sent a message to the Dallas office asking them to change your zip code. I will follow up with them to make sure that they do. The zip code problem does not account for the shipping delay, however. I have spoken with our U.S. Sales Manager and he said the following: The Opus Auto Upgrade Club members were charged for their upgrades in batch and they were the first persons to be shipped their upgrades. It is possible that some exceptions occurred or that individual orders fell through the cracks and were not shipped before other people who have upgraded, but be sure that that is the idea of the club. Please understand also that an unbelievable number of people have called and jammed our phone lines for days to order this upgrade. At first, it had the effect of completely swamping our sales and fulfillment staffs. Anyway, those are just reasons why many of the Auto Upgrade people did not have their units shipped for about 10 days after they were charged. We are still working the kinks out of this system, and we are not satisified with the way this one went anymore than you are. You must admit, however, that it is FAR better performance than we have managed in the past and that our timing is improving. We will continue to work to improve it. The long and the short of it is: you got a discount on the update by being in the club, but we were not able to ship until about 10 days after the charge was made because of the incredible demand for the upgrade. We are not satisfied with that and will continue to improve our performance. I hope you will consider this in the spirit in which it is intended. I am sorry that it did not get there in the time we all wanted, but I hope you like the new software and manual and that you will continue to support us in the future. Martin – via Whap!

Martin, Hi! I'm glad to see you are back. Thanks so much for the quintessential perfect response to my inquiries. I really do appreciate it. Also, your public posting of the problems with the Auto Upgrade Club may save you from having to constantly answer similar questions in the future. You have answered all of my questions to my perfect satisfaction. You and INOVAtronics most certainly will have my continued support for your future products, although I'm not certain if you would still have had my support if you took the advice of one of the members here and ignored my questions. 😎 INOVAtronics is a class act all the way and is one of my favorite Amiga vendors. I look forward to your future software products. I also wholeheartedly admit that performance is improving and I appreciate your efforts to continue to improve it. The disk label was just a minor point, but I thought you might want to make your duplicator aware of it. Actually, the reason I didn't like having to wait is Dir Opus 4.0 is such a fabulous update. Very nicely done! Even though I got a discount, I think it is worth every penny of the standard $45.00 upgrade fee that you are charging. Dir Opus was one of my most valued pieces of Amiga software in the past and the upgrade makes it even better. The manual was also very nice. I look forward to future updates of an already outstanding program. (Hmmm. That didn't seem like a flogging to me. 8-)) Thanks, Martin, and I look forward to discussing Dir Opus 4.0 with you in the near future! Dom Fontana <– Sent from New York via AutoPilot –>

#49585From: Dominick J. FontanaJan 8, 1993 10:02 AM
Martin, I'm having a problem with the way INOVAtronics is handling the Dir Opus 4.0 upgrade. First, as a charter member of the Auto Upgrade Club, I was supposed to be one of the first people to receive the 4.0 upgrade, and I wasn't. There have been people who have simply called in for their upgrades and who have received them before I received mine. NONE of those other orders should have been shipped, until the upgrades had been shipped to ALL the members of the Auto Upgrade Club. Why did this happen? I hope this will be corrected with the next upgrade. Next, my credit card was billed for the upgrade on 12/16/92. I received my credit card statement weeks ago, yet I just received the upgrade. When I used the Version Command from the Project Menu, it displays the Compile Date as 12/21/92. That means the program couldn't possibly have shipped on 12/16/92, the day INOVAtronics billed me for it, since my version wasn't even compiled until 12/21/92. As such, INOVAtronics billed be for the upgrade BEFORE they shipped it. THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DO THIS! The documentation for the Auto Upgrade Club states that I would not be billed until after the upgrade had been shipped and I was also told this by someone at INOVAtronics. Since the upgrade didn't arrive until 22 DAYS AFTER I WAS BILLED FOR IT, the upgrade probably wasn't even shipped to me until about 2-1/2 weeks AFTER I was billed for it! Why did this happen? Finally, the label on my disk was put on crooked. Even though it might seem like a minor point, it gives the appearance of a very unprofessional company. As if someone was inserting disk labels from their garage. None of this has anything to do with the program itself. From what I've seen so far, it appears to be an exceptional upgrade. I will post further comments after I have spent some time with the program. While the program appears good, INOVAtronics' distribution of it leaves a lot to be desired. I look forward to your responses to my questions. <continued>

Dominick, Don't you think Martin and Inovatronics has a right to discuss this matter with you in private before you decide to publicly discuss it? I think your message belongs in email, and if you can't get satisfaction there THEN bring it to public attention. -mark=

I'm glad Dominick brought out his concerns. I have just joined the auto-upgrade club though reluctantly because of all the people who are mad at INOVAtronics for not shipping product to them first or at all. I'm glad I am able to see there are problems with the upgrade club by postings like his. That is the reason I pay so much money here on CIS. To find out things like this from other users as well as responses from the company.
#49664From: Dominick J. FontanaJan 10, 1993 7:24 AM
Donovan, Thanks for your support. It was a pleasure to inform you and the other users about the way INOVAtronics handled the upgrades. I agree with you that such postings are one of the primary benefits of CIS. I've been down this road with Mark before. He works for an Amiga dealer and he takes every opportunity to state that it's unfair for a customer to leave a public message about their problems with a company, without first trying to give the company a chance to resolve it privately. He's afraid that we'll unjustly damage a company's reputation. Next, he'll probably tell you the story about some guy who bought a memory board from his store, installed it incorrectly, and then went back to the store and yelled at him in front of other customers. The customers may have been given the wrong impression about the store because they didn't know the whole story. Mark feels leaving complaints about a company here is wrong, because we might turn potential customers away from them, before they hear the company's side of the story. Oh, and he also feels we have some sort of obligation to do everything possible to make sure that all the Amiga vendors survive, even if they screw us, since there are so few of them. I obviously disagree with him. INOVAtronics has an online presence for our convenience. What could be a better place to inform them of my dissatisfaction with the way the upgrades were handled. If they have a valid excuse, then let them state it publically, like I did. The excuse will probably be something about receiving an overwhelming response to the 4.0 upgrade. Some excuse. I'm glad you found my message helpful. Dom Fontana <– Sent from New York via AutoPilot –>

My only message on this subject will be this: I do not mind, in any way, complaints being aired in this forum. I am happy to hear about problems when they exist and will do everything that I can to solve them. We do use this forum to both promote our products and serve our customers and both functions are completely valid. I should have checked in here a few days ago before this thing got blow out of proportion. Anyway, I'm back now and I just want to say: Glad you have it now. Glad you like it. If anyone else has questions, problems, or praise, bring it on! Martin – via Whap!

You're a good man, Martin! Even you didn't mind my message where I asked you a few questions about my upgrade problems. Can you imagine the audacity of someone to suggest that my questions to you weren't proper just because they didn't approve of them? Gee, I guess the IDE controller in the A4000 wasn't a good idea either. 😎 Yeah, too bad you didn't check in here sooner. You simply would have answered my questions to my satisfaction and that would have been the end of it. Instead, you saw the fiasco that ensued. Martin, you're a gentleman and a scholar. Now let's get back to Amiga stuff! 😎 Dom Fontana <– Sent from New York via AutoPilot –>

Mark, Please get off my case! I had this problem with you before concerning my TTR messages. You spoke too soon then and also with your opinions concerning the A4000, and you're doing the same thing now. No, Martin and INOVAtronics have no "right" to decide where I choose to discuss the matter. I prefer to discuss it here and that's all that matters. They can also respond publically. If I thought the message belonged in EMail, then I would have left it there. They billed my credit card on 12/16/92 and I received the update 22 days later. If there were any extenuating circumstances, Martin can explain them here. We all know you work for an Amiga dealership, but please try to use a little objectivity before you leave a message. You always take the narrow view that customers shouldn't voice their complaints publically. I disagree. I did finally receive the software, so I'm not looking for satisfaction from INOVAtronics. The satisfaction comes from publically posting how they handled the upgrade. Time has proven me 100% correct about my TTR messages and will probably do so again. #49671From: Mark D. ManesJan 10, 1993 11:07 AM
Dominick, Are you feeling 'picked on'? 🙂 I will not get 'off your case'. I think what you are doing is pretty unfair to the company. You are damaging sales and provoking ill will. In this case, I have read every message you have written here about Inovatronics, so don't discount my post by simply saying "I am speaking without knowing what facts". The facts I have are the facts you provide. I think it would be reasonable for you to allow a company to correct a problem that may well have been an accident on their part. Posting it publicly is not the method I would use to get satisfaction. Now as far as your comment goes about me "working" for a dealership is concerned. Let me straighten you out there. I do not "work" for this dealership, I am part owner of the dealership. Secondly I have made it a point (unlike some 'dealers' here) to not flog my wares here online. The fact that I am an Amiga dealer does not automatically mark my opinions as biased and somehow without merit. I think you are trying to create a stink–and I think it stinks. I happen to miss TTR's products and will do my damnest to call you on every inconsistancy you make here publicly with Inovatronics. Get off your back? Only when you get off Invoatronics back and handle things in a business like way. Martin, if I were you I would simply tell him to contact customer service and be done with it. I would not attend his public flogging. Dominick, What did my comments about the A4000 have to do with this? Oh, you must be refering to the time I decided that I did not think IDE was a big deal. Yep, got me there guy. I talked with people, did some investigation and the facts changed my mind. Yep, that is sure an indictment of my character. 🙂 Tell me, what facts are missing in this case?? -mark=
#49713From: Dominick J. FontanaJan 11, 1993 2:43 AM
Mark, Believe me, I'm am not worried about being picked on by you. If anything, I consider your messages a minor nuisance. Although I don't wish to debate the point, I will afford you the courtesy of a reply. Actually, I think Dir Opus 4.0 is a pretty great upgrade and I like INOVAtronics as a company, and I hope they continue to prosper. One reason you are out of line, and your message confirmed this, is you are treating this like the TTR matter, and this is nothing like it. Your whole attitude seems to be, I disagreed with him when he left messages about TTR, and I'm not going to let him do it again to INOVAtronics. First, TTR was a horrible company, and I've heard horror stories about them from almost everyone I've spoken to, except you. Even the programmer of MRBackup Professional couldn't stand them and he's sorry he was ever affiliated with them. But there is Mark Manes still staunchly supporting TTR, apparently for no other reason, other than the fact that they were an Amiga vendor. Second, it is none of your business how I choose to handle the matter. You handle your complaints your way and I'll handle them my way. I mentioned the A4000, simply because that shows how you can flip-flop from one side of the fence to the other. You had a little TTR software and had no problems, so you defend them, despite all the tremendous problems they caused for many others with their hardware and software. As long as it didn't affect you, it doesn't matter. But if you had purchased non-working hardware from TTR and then been lied to numerous times over a few months, you'd probably flip-flop, as you did with the A4000, and be against TTR. The same goes for INOVAtronics. You have one opinion now, but it would probaby change if you were in my shoes. Since this is about INOVAtronics, and not TTR, the facts are that I did finally get the upgrade and I plan to keep it. There was no reason to contact customer service to resolve the problem, since there is no problem <continued>

to resolve. I just wanted to make a complaint about the unprofessional manner in which they handled the upgrades. What better way to make that complaint than right here online where everyone can see it and where INOVAtronics can also publically respond? It saves me a long distance phone call, and it's more convenient for me. And make no mistake about it; INOVAtronics is here for the convenience of their customers. Are you suggesting that they should use this Forum to promote their products and then their customers' complaints should be shrouded in secrecy so no one knows about them. They have to take the good with the bad when they use this Forum. They can't have the benefits without the burdens. You're actually a bit of a troublemaker and you're the one making the stink. I'm not trying to rally the troops against INOVAtronics, since I think they are a fine company. I am one customer voicing my concerns to Martin, their online rep, about the way the upgrade was handled. As far as handling things in a business-like way, that's exactly what I'm doing. It's you who are acting unprofessionally by throwing your temper tantrums. If you want to waste everyone's time, then feel free to monitor my messages and reply. Your comments will fall on deaf ears. In this day and age, you can contact a company by phone, mail, fax, or online. I choose to conduct my business with INOVAtronics here and then I have to be saddled with the likes of you telling me what you consider proper business etiquette. Any problems I've had with INOVAtronics are simply none of your business. Don't you have anything better to do with your time? What facts are you missing? How about that I've left messages for Martin on a few past occasions, and he's failed to respond at all. He still hasn't responded to my last message. How about that Martin said an interim update of Dir Opus was mailed to me on a certain date a short while ago and it NEVER arrived. Then talk about bad advice. You basically <continued>

Dom, Just one thing. Have you ever thought what this message board would be like if every member took several screens to complain each time they were unhappy with some program, hardware, or other vendor? It is true that you have the right – but would you want to read this board if every one of us did the same thing you did? I think that is what people are asking you. —Betty
#49820From: Dominick J. FontanaJan 13, 1993 1:34 AM
Betty, > "I think that is what 'people' are asking you." < Excuse me! "People" are not asking me. It's only been ONE person; Mark Manes. I left one message to Martin Murray (which he still hasn't responded to), Mark is the only one who said something, and then another user left Mark a message saying he agreed with me. I also don't think it's right that you question how I use this forum. I would welcome it if people voiced their opinions when they weren't happy with something. As a matter of fact, I consider the open exchange with vendors the "raison d'etre" of this Forum. Also, I don't leave messages everytime I'm unhappy with something. You're falsely assuming that any messages I have left here represent all the times I've been satisfied with a product or service. That hasn't been the case. Many times I have not left a message here. Also, if this board were cluttered with complaint messages from customers, that would probably mean that the vendors here weren't doing a good job. The solution would be for the vendors to get their act together and not for the customers to suppress their complaints. My message to INOVAtronics was NOT addressed to ALL. It was a direct message to the company wherein I asked a few questions about my upgrade. It wasn't a knock against the company, but just a way to receive some answers. If INOVAtronics did bill me 2-1/2 weeks before they shipped my upgrade, I see nothing wrong with them having to explain publically why they did that. #49859From: Mark D. ManesJan 13, 1993 8:11 PM
Dominick, I am curious, what words from Invotronics would make you happy on the issue of your billing? Would you like Martin to publicly apologize? Would you like him to refund your money? Just what *is* your point? On your flame to Betty, here is a clue for you. When you put your words in a public forum they are to be responded too by the public. It doesn't matter a whit whether you "want" the responses. If you do not want "public response" you can use email. That is exactly why email exists. I believe you only want messages from those who agree. I also think you just want to stir up trouble and make, in this case, Invotronics "look" bad. You seem to have this idea that this forum (which is paid for by the vendor) is placed here for you to do anything you wish. It is sorta like going over to someone's house after being invited and complain about the drinks they serve. It is not nice. It is not welcome, and has nothing to do with what the forum was put here for. It is for "technical" support, at least that is my view. I'll bet anything that Invotronics has a customer service line that would be pleased to help you with your problems. I'll wager though that is not good enough for you, it is more fun to publicly humiliate the company here in public, and pretend you are performing a customer service. I do not speak for Invotronics, other than being a rather happy customer, but they did just as I would do if you attempted to publicly flog me. I would ignore you. Perhaps that should be my policy concerning you. Nah, you'd like that too much. 🙂 -mark= The "evil" Amiga Dealer

Dominick, after reading all the stuff between you, Mark, Betty, etc; I just felt I had to respond. (character flaw 🙂 While I seem to have missed your original message, I personally don't have any problems with what you've been saying. Makes sense to me. Obviously Innovatronics didn't meet your standards of service, and you posted a complaint here in their forum about it. Why do they have this forum unless they want feedback, positive and negative? (I know that they have received a lot of positive feedback here as well, having participated in this area for years now) I know that Martin is pretty busy now, and can certainly sympathize with him for not being able to get to every user on CIS. (for instance, apparently they never signed me up for the auto-upgrade club, even though I did send in the required notices (twice, once for CanDo; once for Opus). I mentioned that to Martin here and he said he'd check. I told him to forget it; I wasn't pissed off, I just figured it was easier for me to call and re-register.) The point being that at least he responded to me. It sure is aggravating when you have a problem, and can't even get a response, much less satisfaction. I bet the majority of flames I see on CIS are about lack of response on customer service, whether it be CIS, phone, mail, whatever… (deservedly so; a company should at least respond to customer communications, I think?) Personally I like Innovatronics a lot, and have no complaints about their service. I'd recommend them (and have) to lots of folks. I gather you like their products too, else you wouldn't be complaining about not getting them quickly 🙂 Betty questioned what the forum would be like if everyone posted a complaint about products…. I admire Betty a lot, but disagree with her on this. If complaints (and praise) were freely offered, and vendors responded, then we'd all be better off (softwarewise). Black Belt's forum seems to be a good model for this. I'd bet 1/2 of the features of IM are <continued>

advise Martin to ignore me and have him tell me to call customer service. That would be the worst thing he could do. He should get all the details behind the scenes and then respond to me online. Did INOVAtronics bill me before shipping the product? If so, then admit it, give an explanation why, extend their apologies, give me the assurance it won't happen again, and we'll be done with the matter. If they didn't bill me before shipping and there's some other explanation involved, then Martin should state it here publically. That's how the matter should be handled. Fellows, as I write this, it's after midnight – and I haven't been on for about a week. I couldn't imagine why there were so many messages on the forum – now I know why. I found this argument interesting – for about the first three screens – but it just seems to go on and on. I have a thirteen-year-old who just has to have the last word. She'd probably go on yapping for weeks if someone else would yap with her. I'm wondering how long this is going to go on. Will you still be on topic when Opus 5.0 is released? I vaguely remember the TTL thing – that was long, too. C'mon, guys, give it a rest! …..Nancy Running out of gas with AP in Edmonton.

Sorry about the crooked disk label. The disk duplicating service can make mistakes from time to time. For the rest of your comments, please see my earlier message. Martin – via Whap!

Dom, Think yourself lucky, I signed up for the DOpus auto upgrade club the day I received the paperwork, returned the form by fax and never heard another word. Same goes for the CanDo upgrade – no response. I even have a message from Martin saying he would look into it… I have decided that anyone not in the US isn't allowed to be a member and Inova couldn't be bothered to tell me. This is the only reason I can think that they would ignore potential sales. I'm feeling pretty fed up with Inova at the moment. Andrew.

Andrew, Sorry to hear of your troubles. I'm in the U.S., and I had problems. Also, there was an interim upgrade before 4.0, which I never received. When I found out about it here, Martin said he would send it to me for free. It was a small upgrade that fixed a bug I had told INOVAtronics about. I waited a few weeks and didn't receive it. I then left Martin a few messages, which he never responded to. When I finally cornered him, he told me the upgrade had been sent out and he told me the date it was sent to me. The upgrade NEVER arrived. INOVAtronics has some good software, but they don't know how to conduct business properly. Dom Fontana <– Sent from New York via AutoPilot –>

Dominick, I don't remember that I failed to respond to any messages to me, but it is possible. Between May 21 and some date in late June I was without a modem as I was relocating to Germany. The person from our company who was supposed to be handling this forum did not get in here very mcuh at all, so I could have missed a lot of messages in that time. Anyway, I am sorry that you never received the single disk update to 3.41. Did you pay anything for this? If so, we can refund it. I hope you continue to find the new Opus useful. Martin – via Whap!

Martin, No, there was no charge to me for the Dir Opus 3.41 upgrade, which never arrived, since it had fixed a bug that I had reported. I was afraid the same thing was going to happen with my 4.0 upgrade. It's a moot point now since I did receive 4.0. Thanks for the refund offer anyway. Andrew, I am running out European office and we have only this week received an inventory of Opus upgrades from the U.S. to send to European customers. We will start sending those out to Auto Upgrade Club Members next week, and the credit card charge will be going through at the same time. I am still setting things up over here, but please know that there was no earlier opportunity to ship to you, and at least you have not been charged before your upgrade is shipped out!
