I just installed the Supra modem with V32.bis. I can't seem to find a combination of settings that will let me get around on CIS. It replaced a Supra 2400. I tried all three of the factory settings configurations with no luck. All this is at 2400 baud. When logging on I get a stream of similar characters and then Whap chokes at the menus. I've tried other term programs too. I'm not to sure about the handShaking, software or hardware controlled. When I came close to success I would get severely mispelled words. Does anyone recall what they changed to get this beast running smooth? Any ideas to try? Thanks any help, –Paul Whappin' from the Wine Country

Paul- I didn't start on CIS until after I'd gotten my 9600 modem, but I *did* see something like that on other hosts when I switched to it. What I switched was on my terminal program (VLT) setup: the "flow control," which enables the CTS-RTS (also known as 7-wire) handshaking to prevent the modem from overrunning your Ami's input. Thanks Bob, I saw that in the manual and have been trying it without any luck. Would it be possible for you to give the "AT&V" command in your software and capture the resulting answer that it gives you. I would like to try your present configuration as a starting point. Thanks for the help, –Paul Whappin' from the Wine Country

Silly question: is your modem cable 7-wire? CTS-RTS don't mean a thing if the signals ain't there! Another thing you might want to look at is your CIS terminal settings. I'd used VLT for a bit before I got into Whap!, and discovered some of the weirdness concerning using different word-length and parity for "normal comm" and the Quick-B downloads. Good luck- Bob – (!) –

Bob, Thanks for the info. I will switch to VLT. I don't know if my cable is 7 wire. I am using the cable that came with the modem which was boxed with IBM DOS software. How do I confirm the cable? –Paul Whappin' from the Wine Country
#59209From: Robert WarrenJun 5, 1992 8:03 PM
Hello, one suggestion I have is to make sure your serial port isn't set t more than 19.2Kbps…the un-accelerated Amiga will choke if you try to run faster than that. To make sure your modem cable is at least 7 wire, just take a multi-meter and make sure you get a short between the male and female connector on every pin. Now that I've had this SupraFaxModem V.32bis for a while, I have it running pretty reliably, but since Supra hasn't deemed it necessary to impart any info about the FAX capabilities, this is where MY problems are at the moment. This was probably a marketing decision, so that anyone that want's to use the FAX will have to buy their software! Pretty sly, huh?

Robert: There is a demo version of AFAX in the AmigaUSer library. It is reported to work with CLASS 2 FAX/Modems, and the author says he's gotten reports from Supra users saying that it does indeed work. Michael ….from the north coast
#59299From: Paul LakeyJun 6, 1992 2:05 PM
Michael, Is it possible to contact the author of AFAX via CIS?….I have used AFAX demo successfully with my Supra but I dont really like its operation. In the docs he says that a prefs FAX driver may be on the way, if it is available or almost ready then I could be persuaded to register. He also mentions a Euro distributor but fails to give an address. Cheers Paul Paul Plymouth,England
#59332From: Michael GerardJun 6, 1992 10:52 PM
Paul… If you have the AFAX demo, you'll find the internet address for C-Born Software in there. I have sent and received mail to/from C-Born via CIS-Internet. Michael ….from the north coast

I got some silly MS-DOS FAX software with mine, it looks kinda hokey. –Paul Whappin' from the Wine Country
#59432From: Robert WarrenJun 7, 1992 9:45 PM
Well, I tried AFAX already, and haven't had any luck with it at all. The included ReadMe files are somewhat confusing and conflict on several points, so I just gave it up. I guess I'll have to break down and order the Supra software. Since the modem is new on the market, there's probably nothing else what will do! Thanks…
#59436From: Michael GerardJun 7, 1992 11:02 PM
Robert: There have been several users that have reported success with the Supra v32bis modem and AFAX. Why not drop an EMail to David at C-Born and ask how to configure AFAX for use with this modem? The internet address for C-Born is in the AFAX docs and you can send your message through CIS EMAIL. Michael ….from the north coast

Thanks, I just got email from Paul Lakey about this, so I'll let you know the results!
#59298From: Paul LakeyJun 6, 1992 2:05 PM
Robert, The Supra works with the demo AFAX here on CIS no problem at all, its a little fussy to set up but it went first time for me. Its not exactly user friendly so I am waiting to se what this GPFAX is all about before I make a decision. I just cant get the modem to return the BUSY or CONNECT 14.4 strings reliably, did you suffer this problem?, if so I would REALLY like to know the cure 😉 Paul Paul Plymouth,England
#59434From: Robert WarrenJun 7, 1992 9:51 PM
I'd really appreciate it if you would upload a small text-file on the settings your using with AFAX…I had no luck with it at all, and kept getting error messages (from the software) that aren't explained at all in the included docs. As far as the CONNECT XXXXX messages I don't know what kind of machine or term program your using, but if the Amiga, the serial port is pretty slow, so I wouldn't use more than 19200 for the serial port speed. Also, you should probably set the modem ATW command to W2 to have the modem report the CONNECT speed as the true carrier speed, not the terminal speed, but this again depends on your particular term program. Thanks for the reply!

I'm not much of a hardware guru- usually, though, if the connectors have seven pins or more, it's seven-wire. (Not always, though!) And I'm using Whap! exclusively on CIS now, with no difficulties. Hmmm- one thing, though, I have an unaccelerated Ami 2000, don't know what you have. Good luck! Bob – (!) –

Paul, It sounds as if you're overrunning your Amiga's serial port. What type of Amiga do you have, and what baud rate are you using between the computer and modem? David
#59160From: Paul ToalJun 5, 1992 5:29 AM
I have a 2500 with 68040. My serial preferences are at 31250 baud with a 4K buffer in WB 2.04. Is there a better configuration that you would use? –Paul Whappin' from the Wine Country
#59210From: David ArtJun 5, 1992 8:11 PM
Paul, Hmmm… 31,250 sounds suspiciously like the MIDI baud rate to me. Try either going up to 38.4Kbaud or down to 19.2Kbaud. MIDI baud rate is an oddball in terms of the standard baud rates used for communications. rumor has it that it was chosen because it was an even divide for the crystals used for generating the music in synthesizers. Anyway, it may be that the oddball baud rate is giving the Supra problems. (Notice the mathematical relationship between the common communication baud rates.) With your setup, you should be able to run at 38.4Kbaud, so I'd recommend trying that first. Hope this helps, 8) David
#59252From: Paul ToalJun 6, 1992 3:39 AM
I think I came up with that baud rate to satisfy my TBC card. I'll put it where you think is best. I'm getting closer, –Paul Whappin' from the Wine Country
#59185From: Paul LakeyJun 5, 1992 1:31 PM
Paul, I am running a 2000 with 040 + Supra V32bis and I get some strange happenings if I set the serial above 19200 (getting strange happenings anyway ;-). I dont think that you would suffer any restriction if you use 19200, it would need a really good connection at 14.4 and you would need to be transferring an unarchived file for it to require much more from the serial. Paul: My Supra 14.4 works just fine at 9600 with CIS. Here are my Whap! parameters: Initialize Modem: |~~ATZ|~~~~?K~~ATDT 7-Wire button ON 96 button ON And then of course, you have to dial a 9600 baud CompuServe node. Not all of CIS nodes are at 9600, so you will have to check the number listing for your area. (GO PHONES). Hope you can get Whapping at 9600 soon!! John – K7KB (via Whap!)

Paul Here is how I have my v32bis setup for whap! and a 2400 baud node.(There shouldn't be any difference but the baud rate for a 9600) Init: |~AT&F2|?K~~ATDT Set 7-Wire Everything else is just standard like what Whap! comes setup. If that doesn't getting you going check your cable and make sure you have lines 4 and 5 present. Those are the lines for RTS/CTS. Kenny Supra Tech Support

Supra: I couple of quirks I have noticed with my Supra 14.4. Every once in awhile when the modem is dialing a number, it will get stuck on a certain digit continuously generating that tone until I turn off the modem. Also, the Busy detect doesn't always work correctly. Sometimes it will reset the modem, other times it will work normally. I understand that a Rom upgrade is in the works, any idea on when that will be available? Also is the Fax software shipping yet? John – K7KB (via Whap!)
#59696From: Supra CorpJun 9, 1992 8:04 PM
John The two problems you are having are quite unique, I have never heard of them before. Try adding a &D3 to your init string or write it out to the modems settings.(with &w) The new ROMs are in the works and I have been told they will be available the 15th of July. If you were refering to the Amiga fax software, yes it is done and available now.(At lease as a package, the stand alone units may be a couple of days yet) Kenny Supra Tech Support

Hi! I have received my SupraV32bis yesterday. While playing around with the settings, I encountered several problems: The *H option won't work. The Modem responds with ERROR. Is this bug unique or have others encountered it? While looking at the display of the settings done with &v, I found several commands and registers which are not described in the manual: %Gx, S44, S49, S50. I haven't tried to play with them. Are they yet undocumented features or not implemented yet (like the &Gx-command). The supra of a friend of mine will disconnect after 5-10 mins. I've heard from others that this behaviour is not unusual. Is it a bug or a problems of settings? Patrick – via Whap!

Patrick >I encountered several problems: The *H option won't work. The Modem >responds with ERROR. Is this bug unique or have others encountered it? There is no *H along with several commands that have to do with MNP10. RockWell was unable to implement MNP10 like they thought they would, and we had already wrote the manual based on the idea it would be there. >While looking at the display of the settings done with &v, I found several >commands and registers which are not described in the manual: %Gx, S44, S49, >S50. The %G is new, it turns on the fall back feature of v.32bis. The s register setting I'm not sure about. None of them exist, I'm not sure why the modem is displaying them. I think maybe a bit got shifted, because they are all off by a power of two I think from the actually commands. I will check on this tomorrow. Your friends disconnects sound like line quality problems. With the fall back/forward feature which is just now being implimented these problems should go away. That is alot of the reason for the July 15 ROM upgrade. Kenny Supra Tech Support
#59970From: Paul LakeyJun 12, 1992 1:02 PM
Kenny, You mention the July 15th ROM upgrade, is this a "free" upgrade to all registered users or a "phone up with credit card in hand and get your name on the list" type upgrade? ;-). As I am interested in both a ROM upgrade and a GPFax (software only) pack could you tell me if it is possible to place an order for both these items if I ring Supra Corp or are the prices etc not finalised yet?. Paul Paul Plymouth,England
#60182From: Supra CorpJun 15, 1992 1:29 AM
Paul The ROM upgrade will be free, there might be a small shipping/handling charge though. I believe that we are going to mail a letter to all register users explaining exactly what to do. We are right now in the middle of figuring out the best method to do all of this. If you call Supra right now you can order the GPFax software. But right now please hold off on calling about the ROM upgrade. You will be notified if you have registered and calling us won't help you in getting it, it will only keep people from getting in who have problems we can answer right now. Kenny Supra Tech Support

Kenny, Is Supra shipping out units even though the July15 ROM is in the works? A group of us here ordered ours two months ago, and still haven't received them. Is Supra THAT backlogged? I've seen them for sale elsewhere, so this is a little galling. Thanks for your time, Karl – via Whap!

Karl Supra is not holding up shipments because of the July 15 ROM upgrades. We are shipping them out as quickly as we can make them. If you place a order with Supra two months ago and havn't received it, them give our sales people a call. They are the ones who can figure what is going on.(800 727 8772) Kenny Supra Tech Support

Paul >What is involved in the Jul 15 upgrades? Not much, it is quite easy and if you don't feel up to it you can let Supra do it for you.(I bet even your dealer would do it for you) Basically it means opening up the modem and replacing two ROMs. Both are socketed and we supply the tools to do it. If you can follow the pictures you shouldn't have any problem. Kenny Supra Tech Support

Hi Karl! Computer Success had, as of Friday, three of the Supra v.32bis modems on the shelf. Amiga package too, I believe(w/ Fax SW). Later, Bill P.S. Did you go to the AirShow? We planned to go Saturday and we nearly froze our rears off! Low ceiling, too. Last year 95+, this year 55- ! – via Whap!

Grrrr. I WANT my modem. Will have to take Kenny's suggestion and call them to check on it. I'm wondering if our "special group pricing" deal we got actually took us outside the normal channels. Good price, but I hadn't expected to wait months for it. Yes, I went to the Dayton Air Show Saturday, but I wore long pants. Saw some mighty frigid people there. I stayed a while, then went to get warm. Sorry I missed you. I DID finally get to see the Wright Flyer replica go up however. (Now what does all this have to do with modems? Hmm.) Karl – via Whap!

Well, come to the air show in Santa Ynez this weekend – you might dehydrate not freeze. Ceilings may be low in the AM and late PM. In between – well, check that density altitude before you start to roll… wmc

Well, on the "Busy signal resets modem" problem…. It _wasn't_ unique… I just got my modem back — it had _that_ exact problem. Now I have another "little" glitch…. I can't seem to get the modem to "translate" the connection rates… What I mean by this is: I log on to a BBS on using a "Direct Mode" connection. If the bit rate I used was 57600bps, and I connected to the BBS at 2400 bps, the modem -> computer speed _sometimes_ falls back to 2400 as well. Is this supposed to happen? If not (and I would think not, I LIKE "locked" serial connections), what command "fixes" the modem <–> computer data rate? Brian – via Whap!
#59960From: Supra CorpJun 12, 1992 9:47 AM
Brian If you are using "direct mode", meaning a \N1, the modem DTE speed will need to match the connection speed. That is how it is suppose to work.(Page 11 of the manual explains that.) Normal mode will allow you to fix the port speed. Kenny Supra Tech Support

Hi, I have been having problems connecting with a USR HST Dual Standard, using my SupraFAXModem v.32bis. It appears that I am getting a connection, but I never get a CONNECT message, so my software (JRComm) hangs. I always get connect messages with other BBS's, but not those using the USR modems. Any suggestions? Also, re: MNP10, I was led to believe that this modem fully supports this protocol…are you saying it doesn't? Thanks…

You might want to download the file SFSETU.LZH from library 5. I just uploaded it. A sysop with that modem uploaded some information about getting it set up, and it might help you. I haven't tried it, because I don't have that modem yet. Steve

Yet another thing that this modem does differently from my DataLoss 2000! Of course, AE's products were always wierd.. This may be asking too much, but could someone remind the "powers that be" in whatever department that writes the manuals to put this information with the "AT command descriptions" in appendix A? If you're going to explain ONE command, you should explain ALL of them, no? I'm one of those people who believes that when you look up a command in a command reference, it should have some explanation of what the command does… Looking up the "\N" command in appx A gives the following — not very helpful — information: \N Operating Mode — see chapter 2 \N Normal Mode \N1 Direct Mode \N2 MNP Reliable Mode \N3 Autoreliable Mode \N4 LAPM/MNP Reliable Mode Sure — I see the "See chapter 2" _now_, but When I'm trying to do other things…. Please pass this little manual gripe on… Nice modem though, wish I could do CI$ @ 14,400…. Brian – via Whap!
