Try SAG Electronics and get an 8500 or 8505 for $2,130. 8500c for $2,275 and the 2.5gb models for $1,400. If find a good source for HDs. We have bought from them one Seagate 1.5Gb and two 340MB. Nice prices! It could be great that the people in the forum start to watch mail order houses for great deals on HD, memory and other Computer equipment. i.e.I have seen some Mail Order stores selling Targa+ 64 for $1,300 and I like the store, the service, etc…— and then other one jumps with a lower price in other place, etc… Then someone (me? 🙂 could keep a record of all the entries and select two or three of the best ones in each category. It should be updated in the libraries each month, or probably with each new group of entries. It could be easy, you are reading a magazine a just look at the ads. then take phone number, company name and product and post it here. We can start a new thread to do it (we can add software too) Let's get it started: anyone knows about a good source of memories at low prices? (I mean SIMM cheaps non Martin Foster's Bed Memories <g>) ana /krazy images

Ana – That's a good price for the 8505. I like the idea however of keeping a list, just so one knows what things are going for. I don't know how anyone call sell a 64+ for $1300, that's pretty wild. "Come and get 'em while they're hot!", just kidding. I'm in the same boat on RAM chips. The best prices I've found are local and they're not very exciting what with the cost of chips going up. One store here which is kinda wholesale was trying to tell me he was selling 4×9's for $175, I told him to stop joking, that that wasn't funny. He was serious. I told him he was crazy! He just smiled. I called a new place today and they said $142. And I know a wholesale house which can do better. Who knows, its like the stock market. <g> -JE

Regarding RAM and its pricing: I sort of dabble in hardware/software reselling. (Dabble = 5 – 10 systems per year by word of mouth alone). It certainly fluctuates like the stock market and other commodities, and volume purchasing makes a HUGE difference. Within the past week, my wholesaler was selling small quantities at about $38 per meg. I'm sure that a motivated buyer can do MUCH better than that through "Computer Shopper" or the reseller rags.
#79467From: Richard J. SmithJan 27, 1994 9:12 PM
John: FYI Micron sell RAM for 40$ a meg any way you want it 16×9 simm 640$ and 4×9 simm 160$ I don't know but some places sell the larger meg modules for more money. I don' t think you can do much better then 140$.
#79543From: John EllisJan 28, 1994 3:56 AM
Thanks for the comparison Richard. Interestingly enough, may places here charge a little more for 1 meg simms than for 4 meg simms etc. As of this week – 1 meg 70's were listed at $34.40, $35.50, and $35.25, with 4 meg 70's at $129, $129, and $140. These are local that claim "wholesale" but which anyone can walk into. The 16x9s aren't rated that way but rather as 4x36s and are priced at $560. San Diego is extremely competitive in the PC market. I can usually get most peripherals etc. less expensively locally than through a mail order house. And many of these companies do business out of state as well. FWIW -JE

Ana: I think that's a great idea! You could keep track of every place in the country that just competes on price, and have them all fight against each other to give the lowest mail order deals! And think of all the free time that dealers like Kevin Krell, Evan Yares, Chuck Mies, James Murphy, Dave Menneno, Ang Guarino, and myself would have since it would definitely be in our best interests to stay off the forum! I can't see the way this could threat your business. Let's see, Greg. I really thought that you and the other dealers here were moving in a different market. A market of BetaSPs, PARs, MAXes, Indigos and Laserdiscs. I can't see how a list of best HD prices, memory prices and computer prices could harm your sells. Besides, I think that we are living in a free market. This is something that the US has been proud of for decades, or not? We are consumers and professionals that don't have the money to move in your level. You know that I appreciate you, but I just see my idea as a way to cut the time consuming product huntings (technically called "transaction cost") not your sales. I know that here we have a lot of dealers giving service to, not only their clients, but to the whole 3ds world. You know that I have bought you software, but it's stupid to think that if you or any other want to sell me a Targa+ for $400 more that the market price, I won't buy it. I think that this is a clear position, and I think that you understand what I'm saying. Moreover, I won't come to you for help for a thing that you haven't sell me. And if I do it, I will try to find a way to benefit you, the same way I will benefit myself. I NEVER ask for anything for free, the same way I NEVER give anything for free. Sooner or later I will pay you and you will pay me. I really hope that you can see my point on this. ana /krazy images

PMJI, I'm probably gonna regret this but… I think it's a matter of "protocol". Etiquette has been in the past that one doesn't speak of any prices other than suggested retail on the forum. Deals and special pricing usually occur on E-Mail. But out of courtesy to many of the various deals going on at any given time between many dealers and end users we've all recognized that this isn't the "Shopping Channel" also the primary purpose..of the forum..at least in my personal opinion, has been for support and shared Software knowledge..you know….Tips and Tricks Etc! Murph'
#79849From: John EllisJan 29, 1994 11:50 PM
Good point Murph, and one I hadn't considered, if that is the "etiquette" then it makes sense. Although I appreciate what Ana is trying to do as well, which obviously creates a dilemma. But maybe the way to get around it is to let people know what one is interested in and then respondents can e-mail the replies. Sounds like it should work and is a compromise on the idea of having an area devoted to "special discounts". What do you think?

James, But this is not about dealers posting prices, neither mail orders announcing on ASOFT. I think that this is more in the TIPS and TRICKS dept. I.E. Tip of the month: how to save money when buying memory? 🙂 It will always be talk between users: "hey Ana, I have got one 16MB for $30 from blah, blah, blah" or "got a 1.05 gig HD for $985!" (and the last is true 🙂 That's the idea. Do you think that it will do so harm to the dealers community here? We can also include in the list each of the dealers in the forum for other product reference. For example, aren't you tired of replying people (well, you are dealer, let's say John Ellis) asking how can get this or that thing? Videos, Vistas, Illuminators… instead of saying "oh, yes, Murph is a Matrox dealer, ask him" why not say "oh, yes, you have a complete list on the libraries about who is carrying Matrox, with phones, faxes, names, etc…" Then the people will choose the dealer they want, according to several parameters, as geographical zone, costumer service, etc… but after all, they own parameters. This could be combined effort that will report benefit to anyone. It's like having yellow pages for the 3ds world. Anyone with me? ana /krazy images
#79921From: John EllisJan 30, 1994 4:56 PM
Ana – It makes sense to me and if certain dealers don't like it, they don't have to offer assistance. This is supposed to be a forum for the use and assistance of 3DS users, which in my estimation includes all aspects of that utilization including hardware and software purchases etc. Why else would there be so many dealers here? And come to think of it, this etiquette concept has gotten a little twisted. Dealers and consumers alike may or may not want to discuss openly their purchases or sales which is why its done through e-mail, not as Murph suggests because of etiquette. I've seen on several occasions prices listed for things by dealers. And if a dealer has a good deal on something why shouldn't he/she let us know. I've seen that happen here recently in the case of hard-drives by a very reputable dealer and software too by another. So Murph I guess I don't know what you're talking about. Or is it a double standard? If ASOFT has a position on this, that's fine, as long as its consistent, but I've never heard of a policy on this way or the other. But it should probably be kept in its own section, which would be easy enough to do in say Hardware/ADI. -JE

I'm a dealer. I'm also a threadmaster, and a primary sysop in another forum. Every once in a while, I sell something to a forum member. We either talk via email, or they call me. But I don't troll for customers here. And I don't post messages which say "I've got a great deal on hard disks this week." It's not because it's bad form – rather, It is because this forum is not a swap meet. We have a little rule here. No trolling, and no advertising. There may be a grey line about how far a dealer can go, but if they cross the line (and quoting prices is considered crossing the line), the threadmasters will move their message out of public view, and give them a little lecture. If they go way over the line, they'll probably get a bunch of nastygrams from the threadmasters. A few messages may slip through, but not too many. Although we don't have a formal code of conduct here, we don't allow commercial pricing. The only exception is IPAS routines and meshes produced by *individuals*. Companies which produce IPAS routines, such as Pyros and Schreiber, are *not* allowed to provide pricing information unless a forum member explicitly requests it. (And, if they are a non-exclusive dealer, they should only quote retail or reference pricing.) You're free to post a list of discount sources if you like. But if you do, a couple of things are going to happen. First, there will be a discussion in the private sysop section about whether to allow it. (This is a privately owned and managed forum, and free speech rules do *not* apply here, no matter what you may have been led to believe.) Second, there will be a discussion in the private dealer section about the ramifications of the list. The bottom line is that your list is going to go over with dealers about as well as a Honda at a biker bar. You're really better off just skipping it.
#80024From: John EllisJan 31, 1994 6:52 AM
Your "facts" are inaccurate on a couple of points. First off, it is NOT my list. Second; Books, CD-ROMS, Hard-drives and other miscellaneous items have been offered for sale here, including 3D Studio, Diaquest controllers, Monitors and Targa Boards, many of which have been sold in a "swap meet" style. No one has ever made an issue of it. I have no interest in pursuing the creation of a list, but not because of your inferences, but rather out of respect for Greg P's comments regarding the subject which were much more persuasive.

Ana, >> "got a 1.05 gig HD for $985!" (and the last is true 🙂 << They paid too much you can get a Micorpolis 1.2GB for $749.00….of course it's probably not going to be any good for Multimedia but that's the problem with buying just on price….isn't it. <g> >> Do you think that it will do so harm to the dealers community here? << I don't know if It would…But that's not the point the point is that I've felt more comfortable quoting List on the open forum and letting everyone else work their deals out privately. It's how Business is done…If your out at a coffee shop and you hear to guys arguing about prices in public don't you think that that's rather rude…especially when you may have invited a client with you that was quoted higher by you just before you walked in. Get It! Why should you be able to dictate prices in somebody elses deal? Besides it's not as simple as just plain "PRICES" What kind of service goes with that price…does the dealer really know his stuff? You seem to forget that in business it's the perceived value that is important. If you devalue the product and services of an entire industry by distilling all the issues down to simply Price your missing the value of the industry entirely. You write for a magazine don't you? Suppose I said that I buy a paper every morning and it only "costs" me 25 cents…now why should I pay $3.00 dollars for your Mazazine when my paper only costs 25 cents. Same aggument! It doesn't make sense. If someone wants to do business with Krazy images on this forum but I come along and say "Hey….Your Paying tooo Much" That automatically puts you in the position of having to defend your pricing. NOW….You may be worth every penny of it but how does this perspective client know that…You see I've brought in the issue of "PRICE" Above all else! It's not really very fair or really a very smart way to do business. There is such a thing as Quality and Service as well as something else called Integrity. Try to put a price on that! I'm not sure that your "Price" Argument relates to listing dealers but I would see no harm in listing dealers and authorizationa as long as there was no pricing. Besides Prices change weekly…who the hell is gonna keep up with it? <BG> Murph'

Really, most of what you have argue is real nosense from any marketing point of view. Let's get it straight. The game is _Free market_ You and Greg have jumped in defending your right to establish prices privately and this is OK for me. However, public prices will do not inflinge any harm in the dealer community in the forum, at least, not from my point of view. Public prices help to get competitive markets running. Free america, free capitalism, freedom of choice at least. You have talked about the magazines prices. Bad example. Unlike your ideal, seems to me, "protected dealer structures", the newstand is a complete open market in which magazines, newspaper and books compete to get a dollar from the reader wallet. What we have to try is to make our product competitive against other products and find the right combination between price and quality of contents. We put a price in the cover, a price that anyone can read. We compete against PC Magazine and PC World, and we are winning the battle to PC Magazine, but loosing it against PC World. PC World actually cost more that our magazine, while PC Mag cost the same. There is a contest for quality, best content and best offers. The reader, as a free buyer, have to make the choice. There are a lot of cheaper computers mags too, but they don't have any significant market share. And they are cheaper. But yes, I have been working in a magazine and I have heard the people in the PR dept. how they are tired of asking hardware and software dealers price for their products and recieve no answer. I have nothing against that, but I firmly think that this DOESN'T help an open market and doesn't benefit the costumer who wants, like you, to maximize profits. As an informer, I always ask for price, then publish it and make my opinions about if the price is the correct or not according to the product, the service support, etc… No, I don't want to dictate prices in somebody eles deal! Indeed, THE MARKET is WHO DICTATES the price. If you can't understand that, you should take ECO -101. But you are right, price is not everything. And here is where the dealer have to shine! You name it! Service, reliability, support, etc… here's is where you can make the difference against the discount market. For sure, I have bought my Kodak ColorEase from a dealer that can support me (or that's what I think <g>) when I need it because I have spend $7,000 in the damn thing. But If I need to buy Painter I will buy it throught the discount channel BECAUSE any dealer will give me support in a program that cost $170 (you talk about it in other threads). So here is a case in which dealers will not recieve harm. We are talking about memories, HDs, etc and programs from big companies… not the kind of deals in which you guys are involved. You won't find a PAR or a BetaSP deck or 3DS in CompUSA, would you? Regarding prices update… I'm not asking for a permanent track of best prices. I know how market fluctuates. However, an orientation price for diferent items and godd places to buy discount, along with good dealers and aproximative (i.e. $1,000-$1,500) prices of non-discountable items could be a way to inform the public, while maintaining your right to deal "privately". You know, Murph' this is not an attack to any of the dealers in the forum, which I think they are of a _great_ human and professional quality, but just a medium to protect the innocent buyer from the decieve and bad prices of other not so good dealers who actually "operate" in the US (as you say, those who don't know a thing about the products they sell at gold price). A little tale: I told to Gus by e-mail that the guys from DEC wanted me to pay _$800_ for an extra 8MB for each DEC. I said them, ARE YOU KRAZY? Well, I said that because I'm moreless aware of the market probably another (unaware) person will pay for it. The objective of an orientative list in the libraries is to avoid this type of situations in many other fields. Look at my as an electronic magazine in which people will get the opinions about lot of products from the experts here plus places and prices about how to get them. Add the HD, memories, etc… cheap sources to make your 3ds machines run faster. Finally, publish it bimonthly and save the time of happy users, save the time of the happy experts ("oh, yes, I think that the discussion about the PAR is in the September-October issue of ASOFT MAG, take it") and normalize the market traffic already present in the forum (in fact, it will completely eliminate it). ana /krazy images

I don't enjoy weeding though tons of requests for mail order prices just to get to messages related to the real reasons for this forum. Large numbers of this kind of traffic reduce the response to "real" questions and problems. I don't have time to read all of the current messages. I end up sorting through and deleting many of the threads. If an individual wants to shop mail order prices, they can buy a Computer Shopper (or other ad mag). This is fine (I do it myself), but they shouldn't expect forum dealers to match these no service prices. I don't see a problem with relegating specific price questions to E-Mail. I didn't say anything about a threat to my business! There is nothing wrong with getting the best prices you can. (I do it myself!) I just strongly believe that this is not the place for a mail order shopping discussion. Following the later posts, I agree with those who will ask to know about getting good prices and leaving it on private e-mail. This is the Autodesk Software forum, mainly for tips, tricks, and hardware and software reviews and discussions. I don't want to waste my time reading a commercial for "Joe's black market memory prices". The dealers and manufacturers here have a professional agreement to only post manufacturer's list prices on the forum. I strongly believe that the users should adhere to the same guidelines. If you want a discount price, call or post e-mail requesting info. Many, including myself, would be happy to help in that manner. Yes, we offer many discounts and full system prices to our clients, as do most dealers. But you will never see them posted here. All the dealers here (as well as others) provide many hours of advice for no charge whatsoever, and don't ask anything in return, except perhaps a bit of respect. I want to be able to keep telling my clients about the great information available here, and encourage them to go online. If you want a mail order price, GO MALL! <g> My thrust was a problem only with the method and place, not the concept! Greg Pyros

Then I can't understand why you have jumped with the previous reply. The tone of that replay (and the last one) is what push me to think that maybe I have touched a delicate vein. No, I agree with you that this is not the place for mail order shopping discussion. Indeed, my idea goes along these lines. First, I am tired of download messages (and have to ask them) regarding prices, where to and how to buy somethiing information. I mean, it's a pleasure to help people, but sometimes it could be easy to direct them to a reference file in the libraries with a kind of catalog, like the Truevision source book but about 3ds and 3ds related products. This will save us those big threads about pricing, product info, etc… Do you know how many times I have to say how much I like the Wacom in a week? <g> Greg, I think on this not as way to convert the forum on a market place but, in the contrary, make a service to those who visit the forum, your clients or whoever wants to stop by here to retrieve information. This forum is a source of information of all kinds, but it's not permanent. I mean, sometimes there are some threads with small discussions about hardware and software, and putting them in files with the correct addresses and references will save us to repeat the same discussion when someone new jumps in asking for the same product or for this or that other solution. You don't have to waste your time reading "joe's black market prices" because 1st) this is an exageration, 2nd)this is not my idea and 3rd)after all, downloading is a voluntary act. This is not advertisement, this is user2user tips and tricks to go to the correct place, with the correct service and with the correct prices and cut the transaction cost. You are good and big, Greg, and this will not affect you in anyway. By the contrary, here is an example of my idea: Why don't include the PAR specs in the libraries, along with the MAX and the Abekas along with the past threads about those products, some prices and some phone numbers, including the Pyros Partnership's one (and don't say me that you don't need this… people need this to know how to go) Will this be unfair for anyone? You say that you don't waste your time reading commercials… this will save you and me to read and write infomercials, and will help people to find what they want advised by dozens expert and not so expert 🙂 opinions and experiences. It's easy! It's clean! It's safe! <g> Really, take the example of the DEC XL thread or the Pentium related ones. Put all them in a file, clean them up, add some conclusions, prices, benchmarks, etc… and post it in the Hardware library under the title: "3DS and Pentium processors: Great Computers for the Greatest 3D". Regarding respect… well, I have seen how half of the forum people have drop the respect for the other half people in the forum. Seriously, althought all is acompanied with 🙂 and <g>s, sometimes I don't see too much respect here. This is hard to admit, but I think that all of us KNOW that _sometimes_ there is more that innocent comments and discussions here. BTW, this forum is not supported by dealers. We all are the forum supporters. You are here because it's a great place to discuss 3ds and other tech. trends and because it is a benefit for you and your _clients_. It save support time, it save everything. Nobody of us is here for the enjoyment of pay Compuserve bills and talk with each other about stupid things and loose precious free time, but for the enjoyment of getting and give, share information and experiences with other people (user, dealers, Mr.President or the Pope). Tell me that you are here because you are so good that they will name you Saint Gregory. If you say me that you don't recieve any benefit from here, you are not telling the truth, Greg. Dealers or users, all of us get something from the forum. ana /krazy images

I have no problem with this, and enjoy the Truevision source book. Why? It has good information, and lets me compare different products. And the pricing is all manufacturer's suggested list price. If you haven't noticed, I've even put together a list of all the IPAS routines available from anyone and included info on where to get them. My own source book for forum members. No discount prices anywhere in it, just like the Truevision book! Yes, I get a benefit of the knowledge base here on ASOFT, but I believe that I give as much as I receive. Evan pointed out the other forums that are devoted to RAM and disk prices, these are enough, IMHO. Autodesk pays for this forum, and would probably be happier to have their scroll rate lower than to see prices on products that are of no interest to them take up the message base! Like I said from the beginning, my only problem with the whole idea was in the listing of discount prices. You can disagree with me, it's OK! People have done that before, and some even got away with it! <g> Greg Pyros

Yes, all of us get a benefit and benefit the others 🙂 Read my reply to James, I think that it's crude but that's how things work here in most parts of the "civilized" world (except for dealers, doctors and attorneys? <g> sorry about that!) I think that both of us agree in the main things. However, it seems that, still, you don't understand my idea. Well, the problem is, mostly, at the communication level (exactly, my ability to communicate something in English <g> —you have to hear me speaking! what a shame! 🙂 Let's forget everything but… read that reply and tell me what do you think about the last idea: an small electronic publication based on forum (cleaned) threads and with some useful indexes (companies, dealers, useful phone numbers…). But again, I think about this as a way to make life easy to everyone, you, me and any visitor. I really got tired on reading the same things about the same subjects again and again. I thought the idea of a reference library could be really useful for everybody, slow down the scroll rate, etc… Summary Want to know what the 3ds crowd think about that or that other device or software? go to the libraries. Who sell it? Go to the libraries. Suggested price? Go to the libraries. Really, don't you think it coulbe a very good idea. ana /krazy images ps.Suggested retail $ is ok for me 🙂

Ana: >> Suggested retail $ is ok for me 🙂 Then we are in 100% agreement! I don't mind the idea of performing a service of telling forumites what is available, and even where it is available (look at my recently updated IPAS.TXT for a perfect example!) My _only_ problem was in bringing in discounted prices for many of the reasons that were brought up here on the forum. :^) Greg Pyros

Ana and I have known each other far too long to let a good forum debate get in the way of our friendship! It's what makes the forum go 'round!
