Charles, They don't…if your printer handles text only…the driver won't do a graphic dump. If it's a dot-matrix printer thou…most of them are capable of doing graphic dumps. If it's a daisy wheel…you'll get text only. Don

What happens if I print a beautiful picture to a printer that can only print characters? How do the Amiga print drivers handle this situation?
Txed/printing Message #29359
From: Don Reinfeld AmigaTech · Printers/Plotters January 7, 1989 10:42 PM
Dear Charlie Heath-I've been enjoying your Txed+ package immensely, along with WShell. My computing skills are too meager for me to get much out ARexx as yet, but I'm trying to stretch all the time. Here's what's got me hung up at the moment: even with all the ARP stuff…

Bill: I got it from COMB (800-328-2190) for $799. I'd been thinking of getting the HP Deskjet but at $799 the Pageprinter seemed a better buy. The graphics are not the greatMt but that may be because I'm u%sg the builtin Epson X emulator. I'd be interested in any further…

Mike, there's a driver for the DMP-100 in LIB 7 DMP.ARC – don't know if it will be useful but you can give it a try. Marlene
From: Mike Hanson AmigaTech · Printers/Plotters January 7, 1989 12:03 PM
Does anyone out there have a printer driver for Radio Shacks DMP-130? The printer has it's own Tandy mode and an IBM emulation mode. I've not been terribyly successful in producing a complete driver with the PRTDRVGEN program. Thanks, Mike

HPGL to Paintjet Message #29161
From: Larry Schilling AmigaTech · Printers/Plotters January 6, 1989 3:33 PM
I need a program to convert HPGL files into something recognizable by the HP Paintjet printer. Does anything exist? (I would much prefer to find a package rather than write it!) Thanks, Larry Schilling 71550,3336

From: John Sobernheim(TCR) AmigaTech · Printers/Plotters January 3, 1989 9:41 PM
Rob, I have had good results using the EPSONX driver for the NX-10 under preferences. Nothing needs to be changed on the printer end. Enjoy! -John

I have just finished switching over to the 1.3 AmigaDos, and have discovered that the special driver that I downloaded from here for my Star NX-10 printer will not work with 1.3 I am guessing that I should try either the EpsonX or the EpsonX-Old driver. Can anyone tell me…
#27680- Centronics Pageprinter 8 Message #28608
From: Rod Lucas AmigaTech · Printers/Plotters January 3, 1989 4:37 PM
Bill: I went ahead and ordered the pageprinter 8: at the price it seemed irresistible. No problems so far but the paper tray's capacity is, as you suggest, a bit frustrating. Anyway, thanbks for your comments. Rod
#23423- Driver for old printer Message #23521
From: Betty Clay/SYSOP AmigaTech · Printers/Plotters November 26, 1988 11:57 PM
Don, What driver are you using now? Does it work for things other than WPerfect? Also – Lynn, the Word Perfect programmer, checks mail in AmigaArts most week days, and you can probably get help right from the top if you post your message over there. Betty

John, GhostScript is another FSF/Richard Stallman product, and is said to be large and slow, though i don't have any first-hand knowledge of it. -larry
From: John Draper AmigaTech · Printers/Plotters November 22, 1988 11:14 PM
John, No problem. I will have it in my hot little hands soon. Thre are apparently a few structured fonts for it already, but I don't know if that will be part of the stuff I get. COMAL? Har! Not quite… at least not for this project. Assembler maybe, though…

Larry, sorry I didn't see this message earlier, I have the Crispin Goswell PostScript interpreter on Amiga format disks. I've tried compiling it under Manx, and most of it went OK. There are a few easy things to fix. I suppose you'll want to translate it to COMAL or assembler,…
#6754- IBM screen font problem Message #6813
From: Lori Haines AmigaTech · Printers/Plotters November 21, 1988 12:36 PM
I believe your problem is that you need to run the NEWFON utility. Microsoft changed the format of the screen font files for Windows 2.0 or greater – to update your screen font files you will need to run this utility, provided by MicroSoft as part of the 2.0 package.

From: John Draper AmigaTech · Printers/Plotters November 20, 1988 11:20 PM
There really isn't a lot of difference. It's just a matter of scaling the output to match the resolution of the printer, building the appropriate sized bitmap, and dumping the result in straight graphics. I probably won't be doing the port, or at least not all of it, but a…
From: Kelly Jordan AmigaTech · Printers/Plotters November 20, 1988 8:01 AM
Yes, the results will be interesting to say the least! There are probably a lot of Amigas out there waiting to see waht will happen! Are you looking at making a postscript to dot matrix program aka plot2print? Or looking to make a front end for non-postscript laser printers?

From: John Draper AmigaTech · Printers/Plotters November 19, 1988 11:36 PM
If the interpreter is half decently written at all, it should be comparable to the speed you get from an Apple LaserWriter, which, though slow, is not as slow as what I've heard about GhostScript on the IBM. You must realize that in addition to the brain damage designed in…
#22186- Deskjet Message #22390
From: Joel Halbert AmigaTech · Printers/Plotters November 19, 1988 12:30 AM
Clay, although the current 24-pin impact printers are very good, their output is still visibly inferior to a good 300dpi laser printer. The 360 x 360 dots per inch specification is true, but you must keep in mind that the dots are much larger than 1/360th of an inch in…

Billy, Um, I just picked up the rainbow, and have yet to print anything out in color on it so your message disturbs me. I was thinking it had to be at least as good as the old Epson JX-80 was, and if so, at $349 or so retail, it's…

HP pretty much has "drop on demand" inkjet technology down pat. I'm really impressed with my DeskJet (at work). And I do "just use and turn off till next time." Don't have any personal experience with the PaintJet, but the DeskJet is essentially maintenance-free. Unlike their original "ThinkJet," I might…

Billy, You should really consider getting an ink jet printer if you want any decent colour printing. That HP printer is probably the way to go and should see if you can get any kind of deal on that. It does give excellent output (I don't have one, but have…

What I paid for the printer and what it retails for are 2 different things! It retails for $795. There is a color option for it (I didn't get it so I don't know the cost — under $150, tho). If you get the PaintJet, do realize that it will…

It's working out great. What you need to take full advantage of a printer with proportional fonts is a word processor or desk top publishing package which understands how to justify proportional fonts. It isn't a matter for the printer driver. What the publishing package has to understand is exactly…

Phew! Let's start at the beginning. 1) Soft Fonts: At this moment there are no Amiga specific soft fonts available. If you buy HP's (or anyone else's for that matter) soft font you will have to find an IBM machine and transfer them over (Oh maybe not, you could use…

When you responded to my questions about DeskJet last month, you said–I think–that there were no soft fonts available to us Amiga users for DeskJet. Does JetSet change that? I'm not sure how to interpret your answer to michael ferguson a few days ago, since you were talking mainly about…

The proportional problem is new to me since I haven't had anything but a dot matrix printer. My Deskjet is great until I try to print out that kind of material. Even Jet Set's printer driver for Textcraft and/or Scribble doesn't do anything with proportional fonts. Screen formatting is a…

Thanks for the information. Yes, it surprises me also that C-Ltd didn't include a card, or even a page of the 95 page JetSet manual, that describes what sets are what fonts. I've used proportional fonts before, so I understand the caution. By the way, I think that is something…

SELECT is an output from the Amiga to the printer…it goes to pin #36 on the Centronics interface. On most, if not all Epsons, there is a DIP switch setting to tell the printer to honor or ignore SELECT. If I were you, I'd leave pin 13 out of the…
