#37842 #MS Encarta Message #38232
From: Jack L. Chalker CDROM Forum · Multimedia January 27, 1993 7:53 PM
Could be. Most upgrade notices I receive are really second or third class mail, the kind used for all those circulars that kill more trees than Brazilian foresters. There might be a problem with them crossing the border. If so, it wouldn't hurt to contact whoever you KNOW has an…

Well, MicroSoft is always pretty good at that sort of thing if you send in your card (over-zealous, in fact–I got seven "Upgrade to Workgroups for Windows" packets and I only own 3 copies of Windows!), but while I have Comptons around I've never heard "boo" from them–Grolier, though, actually…
Gateway deal Message #37788

This only applies to folks who have Gateway 2000 computers, but, if you do, I want to alert you that their Peripherals Department is currently selling the latest 300kbs XA and Kodak multisession CD ROM drive from Sony for $239. Nobody who isn't a registered Gateway owner can buy one,…

Kevin, Panasonic, Sony, and Tenek or something like that have all made CD ROMS for the SoundBlaster, but generally only one at a time. Apparently it's whoever is low bidder when they make up the next batch of media kits.

Yes it can, but without the Pro you don't get the drivers and utilities to do it.

They're WIndows-based, and usually are a part of other things. Player-type utilities have arrived here with sound cards, SCSI cards, you name it. I know there are a number of shareware utilities that also do it, but as my old reliable, which came from CorelSCSI, works fine I haven't paid…

Oh, yeah, MicroSoft can do it better, but I've seen no signs that anything but 2.0a is showing up on CDR, and I'm not sure that c from disk won't do some of that overwriting. It may not. That's really a question to ask MicroSoft.

It never could get by without them. After all, Russia is showing now what the rest of us always knew: take away the military might and it's just a Third World country and fairly backward at that. A military is particularly useful to penney-ante dictators in that it (A) makes…

Kevin got it right and the thing works. Someone who needed tech support from MicroHelp on something that was specific to them reported superior tech support, too, although I've not needed it. Ahem! MicroHelp owes ME 10% at least! Then, again, they did something that seems very foreign to today's businesses: they made something people wanted and needed at a reasonable price. Wonder why more companies can't get that concept?

It isn't just the Russian mafia selling all that stuff. Many in the Kazakh and Ukrainian government are doing it as well, and Russia is leaking like a sieve. What is most dangerous is not the leaking of nuclear arms and technology, odd as that sounds, since most of that…

You have the wrong potential danger in a Clinton. Democratic Presidents tend to be very domestic-oriented and that's where their interests lie, but as with all world leaders it's foreign affairs that come up like mines in a minefield and start blowing. Alas, most domestic-oriented politicians aren't very good at…

But you CAN still play the music via the SoundBlaster; you simply need a utility like CD AUDIO that is commonly used to play regular audio CDs on a CD ROM drive. It will find the audio tracks and play them.

I'm at those things for business, Ed, and usually everything that's not taken up by the family (who travel with me) is all business there. It really doesn't matter what city (or country) they're in. They're different than the regionals, where you're just attending or performing. Real work goes on…

Well, I've switched to 9600 for virtually everything and I find that it saves a small amount of money and a ton of time over 2400 baud. The 9600 nodes also tend to have MNP error correction which the 1200/2400s do not. The savings in anything but time aren't dramatic,…

I don't have the multimedia version myself so I couldn't say, but it's likely you could compare the multimedia drivers/dlls with the ones on the later version and do a kind of manual re-link, I'd think. Might take work, though. Or you can wait until their next press run and…

Word installs to the hard disk; it is nearly impossible to run it from a CD ROM in any practical sense. The idea is that you install Word to disk and keep the specially hooked CD installed for Bookshelf. It's basically a way to sell Bookshelf, and was done, I…

Yes, it is proprietary and you can't use any CD ROM with it except one that is SB Pro specific. You CAN just buy the drive–the local Babbages here even sells them, as do most places that sell the C/L cards–but that means if you upgrade your audio later you'll…

Sierra is EXPENSIVE. First you pay for the basics, which offer no games you really want to play, and then it's an extra $9.95 per month for each additional "land." I'm trying to cure my son of it. I'm not on AoL very much; it's pretty but disappointing. An old…

I guess I should warn you that I'm a Ph.D. in history. Western governments are always much better at putting on band-aids than in developing long-term solutions. Space isn't a waste, it's an investment and a way towards a solution, and all that money is spent here on the ground…

Neither Compaq Audio nor MicroSoft's sound card really fully support mixed audio except in proprietary formats with specific drivers (MS's isn't even out yet, don't know about the Compaq). The Pro Audio Spectrum, SoundBlaster Pro and particularly the 16, and others do support this to varying degrees.
