Lightwave Output

Thank you. Santa Barbara studios created the vapor effect, and we provided the CGI VOyager for it. All of the DS9 stuff was real model footage comped together… JG
4.0 IK will work with bones and/or parent/child relationships. And yes, it is "basic" IK.
RE: 100% Dissolve objects and shadow maps… Setting an object to 100% dissolved will NOT cast a shadow map. That was a misprint (kind of). What you can do is set the object to 99.999% dissolved. The Object panel will read 100%, but the object will cast a full shadow…
Daniel, Sorry, I've been out of touch for awhile and offline. I have received the article and would like to talk to you about it the first chance I get. I think things will settle down for me this weekend… JG
So far, Allen has not set up a vm scheme yet, but you can use a product called vmm available here (I think?) or some other online services (Perhaps NewTek's BBS as well)…. JG
I jave 3.1 AmigaDos running on a 3000 and the Toaster works fine with it. (Toaster 4000 card) JG
I think that would be the largest res rendered in LightWave! Hope you have a lot of RAM, as you'll need 50megs just for the frame buffer itself! Good Luck, I hope you get it… JG
We save RGB files to an exabyte tape and then take that to a film transfer house. (They will inform you as to what file format/resolution they require). A common film size is 2048×1536, but we have produced work up to 2880×2048 (for cinemascope release). Some houses will also accept…
As an aside… it should be noted that both Stuart and Allen do all of their main programing on the Amiga still. JG
Welcome back Greg san. JG
Thanks for the support! But it's not the shoes. It's the socks. JG
OK. That makes sense… thanks for the explanation. I know what you mean about the certain feelings of satisfaction 😉 JG

>>Had the Cybernetica guys not advertised vaporware all summer, we probably would've had no trouble in getting these fixes into the LW version.
A numbe rof people have suggested that. Thank you. (Why didn't I think of that too!? 🙂 JG
Glad it worked. NewTek and Allen are aware of the SN problems with images and I'm sure things will be smoother in the future. For now, it's not even worth it to do scenes that don't take very long to render on Amiga side because of the file transfer time…
>> You know, a class in physics (or maybe a consultant) should be required for anyone writing or producing a special effects Sci-Fi film…
Try the capitalization thing and let me know what happens… JG
Elliot, I know what is happening, but first a question… Are your image sequences named the same in LightWave, but use different letters capitalized in the file name for the different objects? The trick is that AmigaDos treats files named this way (eg. Fire.001 and fiRe.001 as the same file…
Well rested – No. Tanned – a bit. JG
George, Aki's right, The reason it keeps "artifacting" is that by resaving as a framestore, you are video-encoding an already encoded image. Saved RGB's should never show "artifacting" from the original (assuming your original was RGB, if your original was a video grab, you are already starting with a video…

Saving & Playing ANIM

RE: 110.FS.ANIM.Test… Rename this as 110.FS.AnimTest and it should work fine. JG
Hmmm, That I don't know. I would recommend calling Axiom, but I don't even know if they are still in business. JG
RE: Aki's Reply… What he said! JG
Wayne, Tell em you are doing a review for LWPRO and if they let you in, do a review for LWPRO. BTW, a preposition is a lousy thing to end a sentence with. JG
Erik, I like the idea of investigating Cybernetica. I'd be interested in reading that story. Why don't you do it and write an article? JG
Let's ask Jim. Jim, has there been a delay shipping LWPROs to Mexico? JG
Sure, yep, you are doing it right, except that it is 3.5 that requires the space. 3.1 requires the 1.0 of air to be set at 1.001 or similar since the 1.0 setting wasn't calculated correctly. JG
RE: Grousing… You bet, The other thing that you have to contend with is that there are a large number of people living in Hawaii that will attend as well. I don't know if this will contribute to the "beginner not paying money to go to Hawaii theory or not.…
RE: Newton's Law ads. >> Might this not be the journalistic responsibility of certain large Toaster publications?
I don't think anyone has said anything about running 4.0 on the Alpha yet. All we are doing is using the Beta Alpha ScreamerNet module, which most likely is available now (or RSN) to anyone that would like to purchase it from NewTek. JG
Yea, the last time I saw a beta copy of the latest PixelPro, I wasn't very impressed. They tried to make it do too many things and got away from what pixel should be devoting its energy to…namely importing bitmaps and converting them to 3D objects…. JG
Wayne, There's no need to model the air. For your glass top you have to have the outward facing polys with a RI of glass and the inner facing polys with the RI of 1.0 (or 1.001 in 3.1) Just imagine the ray of light traveling thru the table: Everytime…
Daniel, FYI, I haven't seen the letter and article yet, (VTU is sending it my way). Arnie Cachelin of NewTek sent me a similar (albeit short) article long ago that I had hoped to use soon…. I am anxious to see yours… JG
Joe, Axiom won't be returning any calls about WaveMaker. They no longer have the rights to sell it. There should be a new distributor soon and an update, but for now, the fix is as you stated OR edit the scene file and add "addlight" to the bottom of the…
Nobody yet has a beta Flyer. See Jim Plant's response for info about beta'ing a Flyer. Send a fax or letter to Brad Peebler at NewTek regarding beta'ing LightWave. Just to note… While many have valid reasons, it is extrememly difficult to get onto the NewTek beta list… JG
RE: Metaform tutorials… LWPRO. September and October issues. JG editor, LWPRO
Wayne, Actually, LightWave didn't have Ray traced refraction in V1.0. It wasn't introduced until 2.0 and worked flawlessly at that point. subsequent revisions (3.0, 3.1, 3.5) however, have had their share of buglets: 1. When many of LW's internal computations were converted to floating point, a variable was missed and…
Don, Just some friendly advice… If you don't want "information" to get back to people (ie Cobra), it's probably a good idea not to post it on an online service. 😉 JG BTW, FYI, I was informed that the motherboards that Cobra uses aren't just motherboards that "anyone with half…
It depends on what you are using to do assign the rendering tasks. Most places I know have proprietary software controlling their farms. I believe that Enlan/DFS people have some type of rendering software, but I am not familiar with it. JG
PMFJI, The August issue didn't have a disk. July and September both do. JGross editor, LWPRO
Hrmph, What does he know!? JG
Yes, We are planning on doing more bones stuff, I think Grant is covering some bones stuff in Hawaii. JG
Yes you can, but you have to have two different ethernet cards in one Amiga. They cannot both be 2065's as they will conflict with the drivers. One card is attached to your network, and the other card is attached to the Screamer CPU(s). JG
I think you may want to create the alphas with Field Rendering turned on (assuming you created them in LW in the first place). I'm not sure what happens when Field rendering a sequence…. JG
>> You mean it won't render fields if there is no motion? No, it's still rendering fields. There's just no motion -> the field data all lines up. By the way, you may have had a problem in the past with importing LW field rendered images to a device or…
With such a sycophantic pleading, how can I refuse? JG
rewriting the manual…. Hmmm. Good idea. I think I'll do that. 🙂 JG
Play Framestore is used when loading and recording a series of frames to a single frame accurate VTR. It cannot load animas, nor can it play frames back in real time (30 frames/second) to record… JG

Well, I don't have all the data yet, but on an average, they seem to run about as fast as 15 040's. I don't know of the pricing for a workstation, but I know it is under $10,000 (monitor, keyboard, etc) We will have more detatils in a time test…
