#Motion Capture
Message #106518
I didn't catch the thread that Jonas mentioned, but I know the DPS PAR has a TBC that plugs into it, and that will allow full-motion, full-color, 752×480 motion capture — get Greg Pyros to send you some info–
> To this I must agree — I'm having the same problems with an old 486/33 — not an onboard IDE interface, but the dongle doesn't work with my card, although the liquid speed dongle, and everything else I attach works fine — Anybody out there listening? Also, what about…
Just got your catalog — Very helpful! How about that CD-ROM I keep hearing about…? (And possibly another one or two SIGGRAPH invites — pretty please?) –John
Me too. Anyone out there can do this? Most of my customer base is ocean-based, and to be able to simulate surf *and* open-sea conditions (windlines, whitecaps, mixed-swell, etc.) would be invaluble!!!! –John
Why not make it out of geometry? Loft an s-shape, and array it, detach all faces, rotate to roof angle and mirror copy — oughta' take you about 20 minutes (tops) –John

Thanks Gary, I'll give it a try…
What John E. said— –John
Are you using alpha in your output files? If so, you need to increase your buffer size to accommidate the extra info — that's the only thing I can think of — You should check with Greg Pyros about the IPAS netrender file (to make sure the TGAs end up…
#PAR users???
Message #103087
Thanks much!! That formula is invaluble!! –John
Sounds like you have a network problem — can you bring up the directory that the files are in from the PAR program? When copying files, the PAR will bring in sequentially numbered files in order — the IPAS that Greg P. has is for dumping frames from the network…
Try Greg Pyros — 73027,3632
Yeah, back to the land of liquid sunshine . You haven't lived till you've chased a cow across (around, actually) 10 acres of tall grass in the rain for an hour and a half .

I'll look for it — thanks for jumping in!! –John
I'll look into it– thanks again! –John

#3ds Render to PAR?
Message #102344
Yeah, I dump files directly from the rendering process to the PAR — My symptoms may be different that yours — I get about 10-15 (short) animations on the PAR, then , for no apparent reason, I render one more, and 5-6 of the previously stored animations have corrupted frames.…
Hi, Gary — I need to update your mailing list– Advanced Technology & Innovation is now at: DBZ Cybernetics 34387 N Honeyman Rd Scappoose, OR 97056 Attn: John Wilson Thanks!!! –JOhn
Yeah, I do have a TV/monitor that I have been using, but it' snot the best quality – (K-Mart special about 7 years ago!) The PAR came with an NTSC colorbars still that I used to calibrate to monitor. Works OK, but there is no substitute for quality! Thanks again…
Hey John, Do you know of any command-line utility (such as VGASHOW) that will display jpgs? Preferably script-able, so I can give a client 1 3.5" disk to preview instead of 3?! My experience with JPGs has been that they are at least a quarter of the size of TGA,…
I've been having similar problem for a while, now. I just re-formatted (on advice from the grand-poobah, Greg P.) & I'm waiting to see if it happens again — so far so good. What kind of HD did you get? –John
Thanks!
Very impressive — Thanks again for all of the good information! –John
I agree wholeheartedly! Unfortunately, at this point in time, I can't afford to pick up a good NTSC monitor — I'm a bit overextended, just having bought the PAR, and another computer. I realize that there is no substitute, but for now, until I get a couple paying jobs, I…

Sounds good. You've been a big help! You mentioned an extensive video background — What exaclty were you involved in before Anigrafix? (or is Anigrafix primarily a video-based company?) –John
Murph, Man, this reads like "Become a politician in 3 easy lessons" (for only $19.95 — which is about all most of them are worth, IMO ) Don't forget, we also need to learn how to smoke pot without actually inhaling!! –John (legalize it) Wilson

CONVERT AVI TO 3DS FLIC
Message #101746
That sounds like it would work, too, but I would like to get it before it goes to the PAR (don't want much, do I?). I don't have the HD space to render all of the frames to disk then copy to the PAR, so the frames are going straight…

CONVERT AVI TO 3DS FLIC
Message #101745
Hey Greg, Yeah, DTA does offer different resolution, but I'm not sure how the aspect ratio would change. I will try it and let you know, but can you explain how that works? (I'm sure a lot of people would like to know!) Might be a good chapter for I3DS…
A good basic machine would be a 486/66 with a 600meg-1gig HD, at least 16 megs of RAM (but preferably 32 or above) and a true-color video card. I use the Viper VLB, but there are many good ones out there. As with any math-intensive software, "more is better". Especially…
I appreciate your reply — I'm not really that frustrated, I'm just curious why "the guide" is so far off. I've been using 1.9 for monitor gamma since I got R3 (I spent about a week playing with different settings and found that 1.8-1.9 looks pretty good on my system).…
I'd like to see that! Let's hear it for technology!! –John
Thanks for the reply — I've gone through all of these questions, this is a rather strange experience. I'm using the Viper VLB with a Tri-Star monitor (which I believe is made by Samsung) I don't see any simple reason why this thing would be giving me the strange gamma…

Moving Starfield
Message #101418
Try using the Rain IPAS from Yost group, and flying into the "rain" with a starfield (or 3) in the background. That should give you the effect you're lookin' for. You may have to play with the settings to give you different "speed" effects, but it shouldn't be much of…
I preview renderings on my computer monitor, and the contrast and brightness levels are normal (near as I can tell). Why would the grey boxes be telling me that my gamma should be 1.25? I guess my problem is that I have no reference, except the grey boxes, and they…

#Gamma
Message #101168
Does 1.25 seem too low for monitor gamma? All of my renderings are too dark, yet the grey boxes say 1.25 is correct. I must still be missing something… –John
Sounds good — Thanks! –John
John, actually — –John Wilson
Cool! What's the cost on that? (CD) –John
No s..t, eh? I could have worded that better… –John
Jeez. Ya' got that right!!!
Ahhhh! Good point — –John
