There used to be a package called MOVIE.BYU that ran under VMS. Might try contacting Hank Christensen [or his successor] at Brigham Young University. It's been a few years since I played with it and maybe no longer available.
James: GO ADOBE [which you probably already know!] to learn about the NT version of Photoshop. Running under NT on a DEC Alpha is going to raise the orbit of 3DS – though continuing to trumpet its virtues as a "PC" product may have to change!! Let's see… an Alpha…
Isn't there an NT version of Photoshop?
DEC Alpha 1bip+ Message #134059
According to DEC, their new NT-compliant DECchip 21164 is the 1st [listen up, Intel] chip to exceed 1 billion instructions per second. Estimated performance of the 300mhz flavor – 330 SPECint92s and 500 SPECfp92s — about 3x integer / 6x floating-point performance of the 100mhz Pentium. Other comparisons – 2x…

Harry: Here's a # at ADESK (415) 491-8401 which appeared on an order form they distributed at the R4 rollout here in New York. I also asked about surrendering disk 1 – they said, since there's a hardware lock it wasn't necessary. In my case, the only time I seek…
Jonas Ruikis [Adesk] informs me that the Spline-Based Modeler listed in the _official_ Autodesk announcement but omitted from the distribution for 3DS, will NOT be provided free to R4 upgraders if it becomes available. Is this correct?
Will the patch modeler be provided as a no-cost update? What's your guess as to when it will become available? Thanks.
#129822 Why I won't upgrade Message #129905
PMJI. From what I've seen and read, r4 offers _some_ nice new features. These seem more evolutionary than revolutionary which may be just the natural course for this product. 3DS extensibility has certainly spawned a flurry of plug-ins. But, in my view, implementing this capability has inadvertently diverted attention away…
#129584 #Hair/Fur? Message #129618
At the 3DSr4 demo last week here in NYC, they had Xaos and HSC Software showing their IPAS plug-ins. I thought it was interesting that the Xaos guy primarily showed Penello effects on animations that were NOT generated with 3DS. In fact, he hinted that Penello and other Xaos tools…

Hi Gus. Unfortunately, all it seems I have time for these days is to watch what everyone else is doing with 3DS – and I'm truly amazed. Because I'm not an animator by trade [I run an MIS dept] I used to keep up by 'practicing' with 3DS at night.…

PMJI… I believe IBMFF has been changed to PCFF. It would seem that IBM/Big Blue is establishing a corporate presence on CompuServer and my guess is they've taken exception to the use of the "IBM" part of IBMFF. EJB

Don't take this the wrong way, Martin, but what was it in my msg that makes you think I'm _not_ happy with the features in r4?! E.
#115400 #R4 Plug-ins x cpu Message #115488
It's really too bad that there's not better news about an NT version of 3DS – especially since DECs Alpha PCs are quite fast and fairly reasonable – and I believe they've just released a chip running at 275Mhz. E.
I've had Photostyler for awhile… just got Photoshop – there seem to be more plug-ins and 3rd party How-To's about it. And… I need all the how-to I can get!!! 😉
What's the FARGO PT? Thanks, Eli.
John, Would you give a little more info on FD's 2D animation suite? Thanks.
#109908 Fargo Dye-Sub Message #110061
Peter, I think Frank's response pretty much sums it up. But, if you have further questions, try contacting FARGO at 800-258-2974. E.
#109241 Fargo Dye-Sub Message #109283
PMJI, when I went to order the Fargo Primera, they told me the Primera Pro is scheduled to begin shipping soon. It's 600×300 – ~$1500. E.

I believe there's a BLOB modeler in GRAPHDEV that'll do what ya need. E.
#Mutations? Message #98153
PMJI – don't know if this is what you're looking for, but… there are 2 programs in GRAPHDEV [I think] – LPARS3.ZIP and FORM03.ZIP that do evolutionary modeling. Lparser performs mutations – Form03 might, too. Eli.

#80817 DEPTHOGRAPHY??? Message #80964
The Depthography gallery is located at the address in my message. I visited them a few months back – they've got some very good stuff, including computer-generated images. My impression though, was that instead of merely good, their c-g examples could be outstanding if they only had some of the…

Ana, It was a pleasure responding to your question. I say this because when I asked a similar question a while back, I go no response – so over the last couple months I decided to dig up my own answers. And, your question gave me a chance to contribute…

Depthography is located at: 122 E. 27th St – 2nd floor, NY, NY 10016 {212] 679-8101. According to their price list, they charge $1,400 to produce an 8×10 depth image. The process uses lenticulars which are a type of fresnel lens – tho instead of arranged in concentric circles, the…
Yes… That's how I approach it, too. But, the resolution I need exceeds what is generally available from dye sub, IRIS, etc. Let's say my image is 6000x4000x24bit and I need to print at 2000dpi. How can I make sure that the resulting print is precisely 3 x 2 inches?…
PMJI, Greg Maybe you can give me your thoughts about this… If I have a file that I'd like imaged to film and printed, how can I be absolutely sure that the final dimensions of the print are precise? Is there special equipment that a service bureau or lab should…
Bailey, I realize this is a little round about… but since the output from LPARSER is a .vol file, could you use LPARSER to create the simplified base objects? Eli.

John, LPARSER is available in GRAPHDEV [I think]. The docs for the program point to 2 books – Algorithmic Beauty of Plants and Evolutionary Art and Computers. In my quest to find these, I noted that Media Magic had both – book stores don't. One is published by Springer-Verlag, the…

Just got an ad for Adobe Streamline which "instantly turns any image into flexible line art." 1 800-642-3623. I think it costs $69 for the PC. You might mention that you received an offer in the mail.

I've had the AMR book on order since the day it was announced – but haven't received it yet. Guess I'll have to give those folks a call and see where it is. Thanks, Eli.
#63830 REAL GLASS ? Message #64091
Seems to me there's a file in this forum called AMR.TXT [Advanced Modeling and Rendering] that describes a book/software deal. I think the software called Mirage, will raytrace a .3DS file. There was also something about if you buy the book now, you'll get a break on the final version…
Al, If you GO GRAPHDEV, you'll find that Section 10 is devoted to RDS work – images and software dev. Eli.
#62554 Alternative 3D apps Message #62565
Me neither! I'm not sure what MSoft actually bought – and I _think_ Will Vinton has his own enterprise, too. The reference to 'Promation' was recent so maybe there'll be an announcement soon.
#62444 #Alternative 3D apps Message #62503
I think I've heard/read that Playmation will reappear as Promation. You've probably also heard that Microsoft bought this product. You might want to GO GRAPHDEV and see what's going on there — look for the POV ray-tracing forum.
I'll have to take a closer look at that. Does it also throw off 'drops' from the material that the projectile object splashed into?
Here's a suggestion that I think would be a natural for IPAS. How about simulating the effect of an object dropping into a 'liquid' – causing circular waves, splashing drops, etc. ? I'm sure you've seen those slow motion film sequences that demonstrate this sort of thing – just thought…

Jim, I, too, own 3DS though it certainly doesn't keep me from wanting to hear about goodies in an upcoming release. In the past, I've taken the position here that Autodesk should give details in advance. After seeing the absolute fiasco with Polaris and the damage they've inflicted on themselves,…
3DSr3 release Message #50586
James, It may not be your imagination, though it's my understanding from msgs on the forum that this isn't the first time Polaris has made mistakes like this! PMJI – Actually, I just placed a backorder with them – for all 3 volumes. When I called, the guy who answered the phone didn't know anything about the book(s) – the manager he retrieved [fortunately] did. My impression is they sounded a bit snooty – but at least they…
PMJI – but I believe Intergraph's Microstation is being ported to Alpha AXP/NT. In view of products which are fast-becoming available on this platform, it's difficult to understand Adesk's reluctance to disclose even whether it intends to head in that direction. In my view, the Intergraph/Alpha/NT thing could be a…
