Hello everyone–
After working with the same Amiga 2500 for about 4 years and having
come a long way (I feel) there is still so much that I do not know,
so I'm hoping someone will have the time and patience to help me find
the information I need.
If there is a text file that will answer my questions, please
direct me to it as I realize these questions are probably asked
quite often by Amiga newbies. Thank you.
__How does one increase the MBs of RAM of a system? Is this something
I can do myself? How much should I expect this will cost?
I currently have 4 MBs of RAM and am not having trouble with it
but I am considering purchasing a program (new to me) that
recommends a system have at least 5 MBs of RAM.
__I've heard of chips called Gary, Paula, Agnus, etc –some are
fat (Are there thin ones? If so, how do they differ?)– what do these
do? I don't believe I have any in my system as I haven't added
any chips to the original set-up besides the ROM upgrade to

A card that fits into a Zorro slot in your A2500 is the way to go. Most cards
accept SIMMs which hold various amounts of memory so it is easy to decide how
much memory you want to add and how much you want to spend. The process is
simple, but if you are not used to opening up your machine a dealer might be a
safer bet.

Gary, Paula, and Agnus as well as Denise all all Amiga custom chips. With
increasing memory you should pay attention to the Agnus chip. The best way to
find out what version Agnus you have is from the shell type "avail" and see
what is the maximum listed for chip ram. Under 1024K you have the 1 meg, over
1024K you have the 2 meg Agnus Most likely you have the 1 meg version. Which
means the custom chips can only access 1 meg of RAM. That is called "chip ram",
RAM that the processor can access but the chipset can not is called "fast ram".
Changing to the "fatter" allows the custom chips to access a full two megs of
ram. Unless you are used to chip pulling in your machine, an authorized dealer
is best suited to replace the chip for you. Most programs though will run just
fine with 1 meg of chip ram, and you will only need more fast ram. so it's
possible a fatter Agnus might not be needed. Check with the company that
publishes the program.

plain as attaching something called a SIMM to a card, I just might
try it. <g>
So, how does one tell how much RAM is in a SIMM? I've found an
ad in Amazing Amiga Computing that lists 4 different SIMMS but
there is no lead as to how many MB in them. How does one determine
how much RAM is in on of these SIMMS?
I am confused about the number under the "maximum" column of the
figures given at typing AVAIL. For chip it lists 1047552. Yikes!
here I am having to reveal how horrible I am at math. How does
that number translate to K?
I have a feeling that disecting my RAM is going to be worse than
taking apart a frog for biology class. I'd rather skip to the
diagram and label the parts. <phooey> Can't I just watch the
video and write a report?
For the program I'm interested in running, a reviewer recommends
"that you have at least 5 MB of RAM." There is no mention of how
that must be broken down. At any rate, since I only have 4 MB of
RAM, I clearly should increase it. My dilemma is to determine
exactly how this should be achieved. Family name chips or simms.

(OK, alright, I'll have an authorized dealer install it AFTER I've
made my choice. <g> BTW I've taken off the cover many
time to clean the insides –I think it's necessary hygiene to
keep the engine running clean and free. It'll do until someone
invents Gunk-out for hard drives.)

Zorro is just the name of the bus the Amiga uses. When you plug in cards
they plug into the Zorro bus on the motherboard.
As for the SIMMs, the amount of memory you can put on one depends on the
type of memory chip used. I used to know the languauge to figure out
the number of chips needed to add a certain amount of RAM, but I haven't
added RAM myself in so long I have forgotten the numbers.
If a reviewer said 5 megs without stating anything about chip ram, then
it's a pretty safe bet he was talking about total system RAM. According to
your avail, you have 1 meg of chip ram, so I wouldn't worry about chip ram
right now, just about adding fast ram. It's up to you on using a dealer
or not. Adding memory by using SIMMs is the neat and painless way, then
just plug in the card. If you end up using a card that you have to
plug in chips, then a dealer comes in handy.
You have me beat on cleaning the insides, I should really open my 1000
up more and get the dust out. But I have so much cramed in there now,
I doubt there is much room for dust.

The ordeal of unplugging everything and lugging this heavy monster to
a dealer is something I'm inclined to resist. I nearly dropped MAX:
a few years ago, and once when I had to stop suddenly (and it wasn't
my fault) MAX: fell off the seat and onto the floor. No dents though,
and he works fine despite the incidents.
Last night I started screening local Amiga users on my community
bulletin board for those who've successfully added their own ram.
Already I have a good candidate. <happy grin>
You've never vacuumed your hard drive? <scrunching face> I guess
you'd better not do it now because if everything is working well,
it could start some problems. Your computer must have a very
good disposition; MAX: complains about dust on the floppy drives
every now and then by refusing to read disks.

I was glad to help in some small way. It looks like you got some good
advice here.
That's the nice thing about the Amiga, it's makes adding things very easy.
Can't say I blame you for not wanting to lug the computer to the dealer
it's a pain.
Having a 1000, the hard drives are housed in 2 seperate SCSI cases each
with fans. The last time I had the SCSI cases open there wasn't much
dust, it was the same way for the 1000. So far dust hasn't caused a
problem.

I've been thinking of buying an additional hard drive for MAX:

hard drive have to have it's own separate set of rams and chips

The SCSI & IDE hard drives already have all the RAM they need, built-in
the controller card attached to the drive. The built in RAM is for its
own buffering & caching of data, being moving to/from the computer.
The Amiga will use about 30K of the Amiga's RAM for the Amiga's buffers,
and the Amiga's drive buffers can be increased using the ADDBUFFERS
command, if you choose.

The RAM or chips doesn't really have anything to do with additional hard
drives. With a SCSI controller which is what all Amigas with hard drives
use except for the 600, 1200, and 4000 which use IDE. You can have up to 7
SCSI devices, each with it's own ID. For example I have two hard drives,
the SCSI cable from the controller feeds both drives and my first drive
has a ID of 0 and my second 1.
BTW I never said I had a dustfree condition, just no problems yet. 🙂

If they are 8-bit (or 9-bit) SIMMs:
A 256×8 SIMM, would be 256 kilobits x 8 bits = 256K per SIMM
A 512×8 SIMM, would be 512 kilobits x 8 bits = 512K per SIMM
A 1×8 SIMM, would be 1024 kilobits x 8 bits = 1024K (1 meg) per SIMM
A 4×8 SIMM, would be 4096 kilobits x 8 bits = 4096K (4 meg) per SIMM.
If they are 32-bit (or 36-bit) SIMMs, they will be 72-pin SIMMs:
A 256×32 SIMM, would be 256 kbits x 32 bits = 1024K (1-meg) per SIMM
A 512×32 SIMM, would be 512 kbits x 32 bits = 2048K (2-meg) per SIMM
A 1×32 SIMM, would be 1024 kbits x 32 bits = 4096K (4-meg) per SIMM
A 4×32 SIMM, would be 4096 kbits x 32 bits = 16384K (16-meg) per SIMM.
A Zorro-II card would use the 8-bit SIMMs. A CPU-card, depending on
design would use either the 8-bit, or the 32-bit SIMMs.

AVAIL, displays the number of BYTES. If you divide by 1024, you will be
given the approximate number in Kilobytes. Divide again by 1024, to get
the approximate number of Megabytes.
8 bits = 1 byte
1024 bytes = 1 Kilobyte
1024 kilobytes = 1 Megabyte
1024 megabytes = 1 Gigabyte
Its a metric system based on 8 & 1024, instead of 10 & 1000.

So what are you saying – that there's no such beast as 16bit RAM? I'd
actually heard that RAM is bitless, that the path width comes on the logic
of the card the actual RAM chips are mounted on – such as a SIMM. Is this
true? And if so, why no 16bit RAM? Or is 16bit RAM just accomplished by
adding 8bit chips in pairs – thus the ability to add 32bit chips singly?

Nope, the Amiga has 16bit RAM. The 68000 & 68010 CPUs have a 16bit buss
to RAM.

Correct.. Its the individual RAM chips that have width. The DIPs, ZIPs,
and SOJs. These RAM chips are either 1 bit wide, or 4 bits wide.

(For my examples, well assume the computer is dealing with 256K of RAM,
and that I may have ALL of this wrong…) 😐
Computer code deals with bytes, words, and longwords — which are 8, 16,
and 32 bits in length.
A CPU will often need to fetch & store data in bytes, words, & longwords,
and will need to grab the full 8, 16, or 32 bits before it can preform the
operation.
A 256×1 chip can store 256 kilobits (262,144 bits). This is about 32K of
storage within a single chip, but you have only a 1-bit path into the
chip.
If you were to store a byte (which are 8 bits in size) within this one
chip, you would have chop the byte into 8 bits. and feed each bit to the
chip individually — serially. For the CPU to fetch that byte, he would
be required to make 8 1-bit grabs to acquire all 8 bits to build the byte.
Instead, they can give the CPU an 8-bit buss, it would have eight 1-bit
paths for moving bits. They then can align a group of 8 chips (in
parallel) — each RAm chip having one 1-bit path.
You send the bytes as 8 bits (in parallel) along the paths, so each chip
stores 1/8th of the byte. The CPU does only one 8-bit grab to get the
whole byte — each of the CPU's paths recieving one bit of the byte.
With a 256×4 chip, you have four 256 kilobit areas within the chip
allowing 128K of storage within the chip. There are four 1-bit paths, so
you would need only two chips aligned to create eight 1-bit paths to the
CPU.
If you have a CPU with a 16 bit buss (the 68000), you have 16 paths and
need the RAM chips organized to align 16 bits. Either 16 256×1 chips, or
4 256×4 chips. The CPU can then store & fetch bytes or words, in one
grab.
Ever notice that when RAM expanders of the Amiga use 256K chips, they have
you add either 16 256×1 (16bits), or 4 256×4 (16bits) at a time.
A CPU with a 32-bit buss (the 68020) has 32 paths for collecting the bits.
It can fetch a longword in one grab if it has 32 aligned bits of RAM. it
can also grab the longword from 16 aligned bits of RAM by doing two grabs.

An 8-bit SIMMs uses either 8 256×1 SOJ chips, or 2 256×4 SOJs chips to
provide 8-bits. (If it provides a parity bit, this will be 9 & 3 chips
for 9-bits.)
If you were going to add 512K, to an 8-bit buss, you would only need two
256K 8-bit SIMMs. To create two banks of 256K.
If you were going to add 512K, to a 16-bit buss, you would only need two
256K 8-bit SIMMs. to create one bank of 256K. The two 8-bit SIMMs would
give 16-bits.
The 32-bit systems usally add RAM starting in 1meg increments. So, four
256K 8-bit SIMMs, would give 1024K with 32-bits.
However, with the new 32-bit SIMM standard, you can build a 32-bit system
to use one 1024K 32-bit SIMM.

I don't understand this – you have 1 bank of 256k in the second example.
Wouldn't it be 2 8bit chips together giving 1 512k 16bit wide bank?

should have said,

I don't know the name of my Zorro card. (z-1 or z-2?) I hope the
name is printed on it somewhere so I can determine what kind of
simms to buy. I'm guessing it's the 32's because it says "32-bit,
68030CPU, 25 MHz" on the paper label.
Thank you so very much for talking slow and clear and not poking

Speaking of numbers, there is a 16 MBYTE simm advertised in the
Tenex catalog for $1179. I don't think I'm interested in just
getting a chip for that much money –I'd end up getting a whole
new computer before doing that.

An A2500 would have Zorro-II cards, which are 16-bit. However, Zorro-II
is the name for the general purpose expansion slots on your mother board.
if you expansion is on a card in a Zorro-II slot, you will need to examine
the card to see if it allows memory expansion using SIMMs, are by plugging
in individual chips.
There is special slot on the motheboard called the CPU-slot, (also know as
a Co-processor slot). A card inserted in this slot, can contain an new
CPU that replaces the 68000 one on motherboard.
Your CPU-card is 32bit, and should allow either RAM using either 32bit
SIMMs, 8bit SIMMs in groups of 4, or a large number of plug in DRAM chips.
If only part of the RAM sockets/slots are filled, just look at the numbers
printed in the RAM chips used, and note whether they plug straight into
the card, or mounted to a SIMM plugged into the card.

So, I should select SIMMs that say 4×8 and NOT 1×8, right?
What about the 32s? 32x__ <— 1 or 2?

Is it necessary to know this in advance? Does it make a difference
in what I'm buying?
I thought I'd studied this information and rather understood what
you've taken great care to teach me. You can imagine how crushed I
was when called the shop to order the chips and was asked questions
about my system that I couldn't answer. <phooey> The clerk wanted
to know the name of the CPU-slot on which the chips were to be placed.
I wish that my Amiga came with a simple shopping list flow chart that
would say,
"… add 4 chips of RAM? …buy this name/size/item" <—fill in
appropriate
information
"… add 2 chips of RAM? …buy this name/size/item" <—
…and so on. Each Amiga should have a custom written shopping list
printed in the owner's manual. I don't think this is asking too much
of the computer manufacturer. It's all so crazy; you'd think this was
the only 2500 C= made in 1989/90.
Please excuse me for sounding crabby. I'm not, really. <g> You've all
been so patient in helping me out here and I really appreciate it.
Ah well… back to RAM and Chip lessons for me.

Yes, there is a great difference.
A train may go to many places, carry great loads, and go great speeds, but
in the end it is always limted by the rails it uses.
The RAM socket/slots, are your rails.
You need to know:
– how many of the sockets are empty, thus the maximum number of chips
you can stil add.
– are they SIMM slots for modules, or DRAM sockets for individual chips.
– Do you need to add the RAM chips in 'tag-team' groups.
– Do you need a certain speed of chip. (the speed inwhich the chips
allows access.) — once every 60, 70, 80, or 120 nanoseconds (ns).
Most of this info, should be in the manual (type of chip, speed, and
number to add at a time.)
It sounds like you have may have Commodore's CPU-card, and someone else
that has that card, so be able to give you the info.

everytime I think of upgrading my RAM, I recall a line from the
original Adventure game, "You are in a maze of twisty passages, all
alike." So, don't feel too bad if you don't get it right away. Heck, I'm
an electronics tech with thirteen years experience, and I'm confused!

To add RAM to your system, you must add the chips to a card. If you have
a 2630 card, it probably has 4M of 32-bit RAM on it. If not, you might be
able to add some RAM chips there. I have a friend who soldered some to
mine. I think some of the newer boards might have had sockets for the
chips. Or, you can purchase a card just for RAM chips. I have one of
those, too, but it is 16-bit RAM – a little slower, but it does the job,
and the computer uses the faster chips first. Most of these cards will
hold at least 8M of RAM chips. If they are socketed and you get the right
kind of chips, you could probably put them in yourself. I've done it.
You just have to be careful to turn the notch the right direction and to
fill up the sockets in the right order, and you should get instructions
with the board to help you do that.
I'm sure you have Gary, Paula, and Agnus. All Amigas do, but we don't all
have the same revisions. And some of the newer machines have given new
names to them. Agnus chips usually have either 1M or 2M, and the bigger
one lets you do more with graphics.
I'm sure the guys will all want to tell you all about those, and I
wouldn't want to spoil their fun! I'm sure they've missed your input
here, too.

I've missed you all too. Guess that's why I'll keep coming back.
The only reason I have for staying away so long is
that my forum gobbles up a considerable amount of my day as it
is so I can only come back when MAX: needs therapy of some sort.
When I'm not here, you can be sure that my Amigese vocabulary
grows stagnent. You guys did such a great job the last time I came
in that I had enough to digest for several months. I believe
the topic was CR/LF, etc and IFF to GIF. Anyway, I'm
at a point where I need to upgrade the ROM in my head in order
to navigate MAX: in strange and unknown (to me) territory: DTP.
Browsing through the User's Guide to AmigaDOS for the OS just now,
I decided to try typing CPU in cli. (Never did that before.)
The numbers 68030 and 68882 appeared. <hmm> According to the papers
that were pasted to MAX: when he was brand new, the first number is
related to 32-bit and 25MHz. The second number is a floating point.
(I think someone explained that once.) Do either of these determine
how the RAM is arranged? (Yes, I'm thinking of the disection thing
again.)
Is there a magic word to type in cli that will list the
particulars of the human-name chips the system includes?
As you can tell, I've always avoided or ignored the topic of
these human-name chips. MAX: has always been able to do
anything I've asked him to do. I can't remember any big problems
but then I don't run any complex video SW or peripherals. Yet.
I don't want to do much with graphics. I just want to turn
my IFFs to GIFs (and do the reverse) all by myself.

You are right that the 68030 is the CPU, and the 68882 is the floating
point (math chip). I have a 2500, too, and have the same chips. If you
have 2.1, then there will be an icon in your Tools drawer called
ShowConfig. If you double click on it, it will tell you what is in your
machine – how much memory, where it is located, what boards you have
installed, etc. I have a bit of a problem with it, however. It opens a
very narrow window and most of the text scrolls off the top before I can
read it. I haven't tried to save it in a file or anything of that sort.
I use SysInfo (from the libraries here) which shows graphically just what
is in your Amiga, and gives you time to study it.
The only way I've ever tried to change IFF to GIF or GIF to IFF is with a
program designed to do that. There are some in the Graphics Utilities
library of AmigaArts, and there are the commercial programs like
ImageMaster and ADPRO, either of which can do it easily. I think your
best bet for making the change in graphics format would be to use one of
these programs.
GVIEWS4.LZH, WASP.LHA, and AMGIF.LZH were the ones I noticed that seem to
do what you want. There may be others. I know that Imagemaster and AdPro
can do the conversions either way.
I realize that your forum is extremely busy, and can see how it might take
up most of your time! But we do like to have you come by. You brighten
up the place a bit when you visit.

Typing "ShowConfig" in CLI gives the same info as clicking on
the icon. Does that scroll off as quickly for you?
I came in here once to check on the IFF to GIF / GIF to IFF
shareware and never really did have much luck at it. Only one
program claimed to do it but I couldn't open it up. I can't
remember which one is was –it was an LHA or unZipper that I didn't
have. I must have gotten distracted because I never got back
to it.
Anyway, FASTGIF2 is my favorite GIF viewer because it offers me
three different views at the press of a key. O for overview,
L for interlace, and H for high resolution. The author sent me
his newest version which is supposed to be able to save-as IFF
but it doesn't work. I give up; I'm going to buy ArtDeptPro
which is the reason behind my questions about RAM.
Just this week I took the job as editor and producer of a
nation-wide sewing guild's newsletter so I'm shopping for DTP
software, etc. I'm really excited about the new Amiga adventure
this starts for me. Thanks for the kind words about
brightening up the place. Must be these colorful rags

For DTP, I suspect that your best choice might be PageStream – though I
bought ProPage early on and have never bought PageStream. Two clubs to
which I belong are using PageStream for their newsletters, and the output
is great – both the text and the graphics.
I've never tried this – but I wonder if a screen-grabber would not make an
IFF file from your GIF pictures? Maybe something like SCREENX? It lets
you get to the screens by name, which I find easier than some of those
that allow me only x seconds to get back to the screen I want grabbed.
SCREENX would be in AmigaTech, I believe. It's pretty old, but my version
still seems to work fine. It can save any screen to a file, and I think
it saves things out in IFF format by default. There are quite a few IFF
to GIF converters in the libraries. However, ADPRO or ImageMaster will
certainly do the job well for you.

Well, SCREENX is free for the downloading, so it shouldn't hurt your
Mastercard too badly, and it's worth a try.
I have a new scanner. It's been here for two or three months, but it was
only today that I got it going. I had to wait a while for the software,
because it was update time and I had to wait for the update to be
finished. Then I had guests – no time. And a bit of problem getting all
of the things working together. But today, it all started working, and
I've scanned and scanned. I think I'm going to enjoy this! I bought the
laser printer last fall when I needed to print a genealogy book – and I
really enjoy having it.
I've had problems with SNAP, too, but SnipIt works fine for me. One of
these days, I think I'll read the docs for SNAP and get it working right,
because it does more than SnipIt – but in the meantime……

I bought a tablet about 2 years ago but have not really used it
much. I'd *like* to, but it plugs into the same place that the
modem uses, so naturally I resist the fiddling around it would
take each time I'd want to use it. I tried an A/B box but that
didn't help at all– what a farce that was. <g>

I bought an Epson ES-600C flatbed scanner. Sort of expensive, and I'm not
sure I could justify buying it except that I wanted it, so I got it. I've
only done a very few pictures, but I do plan to upload them here because
they are of people who participate here, and I think people would like
them. I took most of them at Devcon in Orlando, January 1993. In time I
will learn to do better scans, to make touchups to get rid of glares here
and there, etc., but not yet. Right now, I'm just delighted to get the
picture onto the screen. I scanned in the pictures which is always done
in 24-bit color, then sent them out in .GIF format, and that's the format
I'll upload. I think I'll love the scanner as I learn more about using it
and the software that goes with it.

Yes, my Amiga user group uses PageStream for their newsletter so
that's why I'm confident that I've made a good choice. I can't
wait till it comes… meanwhile I've got to expand the RAM of my
system or I won't be able to install any of it.
I've noticed that Seattle Film Works is offering to place 35mm
photos on disk –not Amiga disks though. 🙁 I'm counting on
ArtDeptPro to take these disks –it's going to be such fun.

Ah, but your Amiga can read MSDOS disks, so that would not be a problem,
would it? The biggest trouble is that pictures take up tremendous amounts
of disk space. I did some 640 x 400 scans yesterday. The 24-bit scans
took around half to 3/4 meg each. When I sent them out as GIF 256-color
files, they were compressed to about 150K each. But I haven't brought out
the GIF-viewer yet to see how they look in that format. I'm just getting
started with this scanner, and things will be slow for a while until I
learn to use it better, I'm sure.

It's a FAT file system, that's all. So you can read ANYTHING on a DOS
disk if you have the proper software – a graphics viewer that supports the
GIF file format, for example, to view GIFs. And you can copy to and from
DOS disks – very useful for me, for example, coming from and going to work
with files on disk.
The text thing you're referring to is a filter that translates between the
slightly different character sets of the Amiga and PCs. I don't remember
the details of who uses what, but the main problem is end-of-line and
newline characters – one uses one of them, and the other uses both, so
CrossDOS will adjust text for proper reading. Maybe someone else can step
in here with more details and a better explanation of this part.

You can transfer any kind of files from Amiga disk format to MSDOS format
using CrossDOS. You can't run the programs, but you can transfer the disk
format so the other machine can read the data. For .GIF pictures, a GIF
viewer on both machines would make the pictures viewable on both machines,
directly from the disk formatted for the machine. You can even download
binary files, move them from one disk format to the other, and then
extract them on the other machine and run them. I download everything to
my Amiga, but if I download something for the Toshiba notebook which
requires MSDOS, I then make an MSDOS disk and use CrossCOS to move them
over to the notebook – programs, pictures, text files, or whatever.
I haven't seen Amazing Amiga lately. Maybe you should write something for
them to print? This is one on which I cannot comment much.

PMJI, but with respect to the sewing guild, this may be of interest: I
vaguely recall seeing a message somewhere about an Amiga-based weaving
program. It either drove looms directly or did designs. That's all I
recall and I may be hallucinating. For what it's worth.
BTW, I've installed RAM in Amigas and peripherals and it's no big whoop.
You just have to be sure to get the right chips, and the safest course
there is to take the manual describing what type is needed into any
ordinary computer store. Buy from an Amiga dealer if possible, call
MemoryWorld mail order or go to any CompUSA outlet or that sort of place.
If you have the RAM config info, they can give you what you need; then
it's just a matter of plugging them in properly, in the right orientation,
which the instructions should explain.

JIBDS– I'm aware of the various weaving, knitting and CCS programs
for the Amiga. I even know the person who holds the rights to several
of those programs. Alas por moi, I neither weave, knit nor do hand
stitching.
The Amiga program(s) I'd be most interested (flat pattern drafting,
cloth draping or sewing machine stitch design) do not exist. Please
don't be concerned though, I've gotten over my disappointment. <shrug>
My solution was to get one of the "other" computers. It should arrive
later this month. <g> –whisper—-> It's a laptop.
I doubt if the messy-dos forums have as nice a folk as I meet here –I
wonder if I'll even need to go over there. I wonder if my Amiga
knowledge will be transferable to brand X. <g>

KinCON program found here online. I used it as a replacement for the CON:
that comes with the C= OS. It opens a normal type CON: window, but it has
an extra two gadgets.
1. a sizing gadget that maximizes the size of the window at the click of
a button.
2. a slider gadget to enable scroll back for that text that scrolls off
the screen.

The A2500 has 1-meg of memory on the motherboard. This memory will have
one of two possible configurations:
512K CHIP(graphic) + 512k FAST(system) = 1024K total memory.
1024K CHIP(graphic) + 0K FAST(system) = 1024K total memory.
To add more memory requires an expansion card. Since you have 4-megs of
RAM, I assume you have a card.
If the extra RAM comes from a Zorro-II card, all you need to do check the
card, and see if it has some empty sockets for plugging in more RAM chips.
Since the A2500, is an A2000 with one of Commdore's CPU-cards pre-fitted,
you may be getting the extra RAM from the CPU-card. If so, you will need
to check the CPU-card for empty sockets.
If all RAM sockets are filled, or the extra RAM is on the CPU-card, you
might consider upgrading the CPU-card to one of faster third party cards
that offers the addition of greater amounts of RAM, and other features.

These are the famous custom chips. Their names reflect their jobs. The
big three of the family are Paula, Agnus, & Denise (the PAD):
– Agnus, the address generator. She acts as a gate keeper to the CHIP
memory area. She prevents the CPU and PAD from using the CHIP memory at
the same time. She holds the registers for the colors in use. She also
contains the COPPER (the co-processor list that allows you to drag the
screens down, revealing the screens hidden behind the top screens.) The
BLITTER, is also inside Agnus. The Blitter allows the system to move
blocks of graphics at high-speed, and even mix the two blocks to create a
third image.
– Denise, the display enhancement. She works as part of a tag team with
the Agnus chip. Denise handles the sprites & bitplanes, and the CLUT
(color look up table). The CLUT is the method the Amiga uses to figure
which of the "on screen" colors are numbered 1-thru-32 (out of the
possible 4096 colors.)
– Paula, the ports & audio. She handles the joystick/mouse ports,
serial, and disk ports. She also handles the four audio buffers, ans
sound output.
– Gary, the gate array. An odd jobs man. He generates the actually
signal the Agnus uses to put the CPU on hold while the PAD use the CHIP
memory. Gary, also configures that second bank 512K (on the motherboard)
that can be used as either CHIP or FAST. Basically, a glue chip at
replaces several smaller chips.
– CIA's (the #8520's), these two chips deal with "information movement"
between the ports and the PAD. (Like little C.I.A. groups). Not exactly
custom chips like the others, but their still famous. They deal with the
parallel port, modem control, disk status sensing, disk motor & stepping
control, ROM enable, & keyboard interface. They also get blown easy, if
you insert a hot cable (live power)…hmmm… maybe they're a lot like the
C.I.A.

The FAT & Slim refer to the shape of the chips.
The original Agnus was a DIP chip. She was two inchs long, and half inch
wide, with pins on two sides of the chip. (Your Denise, Paula, & Gary
still use this DIP style "packaging".)
The Agnus used in the A2000 & A500 series, was a fatter square shaped
style of chip called a PLCC. The chip is as wide as it is long, and has
pin on all four sides. Agnus lost her "slim" figure, and got "fat".
Several of the other chips have switched to being PLCC (fat) chips, in
later models (A3000, A600, A4000, A1200).

Commodore, has upgraded the Agnus & Denise used in the A500 & A2000
series. The new chips are referred to as the ECS Agnus (#8372a) & ECS
Denise (#8373). The ECS stands for "Enhanced Chip Set".
Your A2500 may have the OCS (original chip set). If it does, you can have
the OCS Agnus (#8370/8371) & OCS Denise (#8362(?)) pulled, and replaced
with the ECS.
Once you have the ECS, you can have a modification made, that makes the
FAST 512K of motherboard memory into 512K CHIP memory for a total of 1024K
of CHIP(graphics) memory.
The ECS will also allow you to experiment with some new screenmodes, under
AmigaDOS 2.0/2.1.
A program called "ShowConfig", should be in your Tools: drawer.
ShowConfig, will tell you which Agnus & Denise you have, and how much CHIP
& FAST memory you have.

Ok, you got the ECS Agnus, and it is running in NTSC mode. The ECS Agnus
can also do PAL mode for European games that use PAL monitors. You have
the OCS Denise, but you can upgrade it at anytime, if you want.

It appears that your ECS Agnus has already been configured to use the full
1-meg of CHIP memory. No need to mess with the motherboard memory.
If your A2500 has 4-megs, the info that ShowConfig gives should look
something like:
Node type $A, Attributes $205 (FAST), at $200000-$4FFFFF (3.0 megs)
Node type $A, Attributes $303 (CHIP), at $400-$FFFFF (~1.0 meg)
The $205 & $303, are numeric code describing the characteristics of a bank
of RAM. You can ignore the $205, & $303, for now.
The 'at $200000-4FFFFF' numbers, tells were the system has mapped the
memory.
The '$400-$FFFFF' is standard place 1-meg of memory.
The place (and amount) for FAST memory will differ depending on where your
Zorro-II, or CPU-card mapped it.

Think of memory as a workroom inwhich the CPU uses to build the data from
tools (programs). It also contains the tools the CPU builds with (the
programs). With other computers, the CPU does ALL the work.
If the CPU wants to build a billboard for a customer, it has to assemble
the parts, connect them, then move the billboard to a cetain place to be
displayed. Also, the CPU needs to repaint the billboard, alter the
display as needed, remove it, etc., all by himself. In the meantime, he
has projects to work on, for other customers, and must keep their projects
up to date.
The Amiga gives the CPU some helpers, refer to as the Custom Chips. These
chips can do certain part of the jobs for the CPU (the Boss). The Agnus &
Denise handle the art work (graphics). While Paula does any needed sound
effects, plus Paula handles the shipping of files, and gathers input from
the customers (the user).
The time the CPU puts into handling the art & sounds is reduced to only 3%
of his time from the 100% of his time he use to spend on that area of each
project.
Now, the PAD (Paula, Agnus, & Denise) have a limited workarea. They can't
gain access (or even find) all the RAM availible to the CPU. They can only
use a special workarea called "CHIP" memory, it was named after them (the
Custom CHIP area). In the beginning, this area, was only 256K in size,
but the blueprints allowed for the expansion of upto 2048K (2-megs).
The CPU can also do its work in the same area (CHIP memory), as well as in
its own workarea. The CHIP memory is shared between the two.
To prevent CPU from grabbing the graphic/sound data while the PAD group is
working on the data, and to keep the PAD from writing over data the CPU is
in the process of reading, a gatekeeper was established — Agnus.
Agnus, will allow only one of the two (PAD or CPU) into CHIP memory, at
any given time. And the PAD has first priorty. There will be times that
the CPU is locked out of CHIP memory, while the PAD handles large data
packages. The CPU must wait.
However, the CPU has its own area of memory, that he can enter at any
time. He never has to wait to access it, so the area was named "FAST"
memory. If there is FAST memory, the CPU will use it first, to do its
work.

As is, your A2500 has been expanded to have 1-meg of CHIP memory. If you
use a special device, you can expand it to 2-megs of CHIP. The device is
a small board containing a "more enhanced" ECS Agnus, and another 1-meg of
memory on the board. The board plugs into the Agnus's socket, replacing
the old Agnus.
A Zorro-II card can allow upto 8-megs of FAST memory for the CPU's use in
running programs, and storing data.
A CPU-card would also as FAST memory, and many of these cards can be
configured to add their memory outside of the area reserved for Zorro-II
boards. This allows even more FAST memory.

Chip names that are derived from acronyms based on assigned tasks
and the relationships to one another makes a lot of sense. I had
no idea that was the reason for the names. When you describe the

Once upon a time, there were seven healers from the east. They had great
wealth, and looked to spread it upon the land, and reaper the rewards.

inside a one-eyed creature. The people could control, and guide the
dreams by using magic boxes.
They sought to use their wealth to make their own magic boxes to sell to
the people. They found a group of master weavers, that desired to weave
a great magic box of many colors.
The weavers worked many moons, creating the box of dreams, which they had
blessed with the name Lorraine. Within Lorrine, there were placed three
special stones that held great powers of binding. They were Agnes,
Daphine, and Portia.
But a great mists seemed to shroud the land, and people no longer looked
to there magic boxes for pleasure, and many forgot the dreams. The
Healers became fearful, for the their magic box had not yet been finished.
The Weavers said, 'Fear not. For this box holds the power of the greater
magics, the people have discovered.' But the Weavers needed more time,
and the Healers had not the wealth.
The Weavers sought wealth from another House. Many turned to glance, but
few listened until the House of the Atari. The Weavers had shadows grow
upon there hearts, for they had weaved for the Atari before. There was
fear that Lorraine would be cast aside, and her three stones — Agnes,
Dephine, and Portia, would be enslaved to another magic box.
The House of Atari had cast a powerful spell. While the Weavers talked
with them, the Atari lent wealth to the Weavers. If the Weavers did not
return the wealth, the Atari could take the three hearts of Lorraine as
payment — the stones themselves.
But then a great Captain sailed down from the north, called the Commodore.
He looked upon Lorraine, and saw her power. He lent his wealth to the
Weavers, who in turn gave it to the House of Atari. This greatly weakened
Atari's spell, and made it not.
Soon, the Weavers banded together with the crew of the Commodore's ship.
And the power of the Lorraine was released. But having neared death, she
had changed.
She was given a new name, the name of Weaver's shop — the Amiga. The
binding of her stones was made solid, and they became Agnus, Denise, and
Paula.
After a time, Amiga had taken several forms, and been given many new
stones. Many of these stones grew and changed. Agnus, grew into a jewel
called Alice. Denise merged with a stone called Amber, and they took a
form called Lisa.
But in these latter years, the mists had returned — reshaping the dreams
of the people — blinding some, while opeing the eyes of others.
New magic boxes of different weave spread from many Houses, growing in
great numbers throughout the land.
The Commodore was old, and his wealth was no longer as great. Many feared
he lacked the power to wield the forces of the Amiga. The Commdore grew
ill, and his purse low.
But he had many children in far lands, that yet may have power & wealth to
follow in their fathers steps, knowing merchants of wealth. And the Amiga
had brushed with death before, and yet may have the power to escape it

On yes.
The IBM/Clones had a 640K 'conventional' memory area, for running
software, and a 384K 'upper' memory area for adding hardware. But they
didn't have an easy way to add more memory for software. At least if you
were using MS-DOS. We haven't gotten to start using 'cutie names' yet,
for there chips, but we have converted them into WIMPy (windows, icons,
menus, pointers) users.
The Atari ST system have a simular CHIP vs. FAST memory system, but with
different problems. Amigas & Atari STs, seem to look at each other as
their evil (or pale) not-so-identical twin.
The Commdore 128, had the ability to support 512K using eight 64K banks,
but shipped with only two banks (128K). The REU (RAM Expansion Units),
for the C64/128 could be expanded to 2-megs of memory.
There was even a hack to allow the C64 to be expanded to 1-meg,
(internally).
And I believe the Atari's Jaguar, has custom chips named Tom, & Jerry.

The MegAchip 500/2000, by DKB. They have an area in the AmigaVendor
forum.
The board allows either the #8372b, or the #8375, version of the ECS Agnus
to be plugged into the older Agnus socket. Some refer to these Agnus as
the 'Super Agnus' or the "2-meg Agnus'.
