I'm glad 3DS works on your machine. If you download the latest vibrant in-line driver update from this forum, I'm sure your card will work great. John Tissavary | LUNA cie, inc
Yeehaawww! sounds like you'll be in a position to abuse as many ferrets as you like . I've heard they've got those new robotic armature, servo controlled 3D ferret real-time input devices on every desk at Virgin… or is that only on YOUR desk? John Tissavary | LUNA cie, inc
IRIX comes with NFS, so you should already have it. I'm about to set up the same sort of network, but will just be using TCP/IP and FTP'ing the files across, since I won't really be sharing other types of resources accross platforms anytime soon. Lantastic's gateway runs @ $1200…
Add to Kyle's excellent list: Ability to create clusters of individual CV's (both spline and poly). These clusters should be selectable and animatable in the keyframer using any method of animation available (IK, deformation, etc…). John Tissavary | LUNA cie, inc
Are you doing this film recording for 35mm movie film? If that's the case, then you should check with the service bureau that's doing the film recording, or with your film recorder's manual for optimal resolution. That said, the company I use has two options: hi and lo res. High…
I agree 100%. I've got "another" animation package that has both scanline and raytracing render engines, and I've only used the raytracer once. On the current project I'm rendering (1hr per frame, aaarrrrgggghhhh!) the scanline renderer looks waaaay better than the raytracer because I can control where the reflections are…
>>As JohnT so tactfully put it
Actually, radiosity rendering is not commonly found in raytracers. From what I understand (surely not enough ) the lighting model ups the ante one step further than raytracing in that it not only calculates how light bounces from one surface to another (reflections), but also how one "lit" surface will…
Vibrant upgrades are available here on the forum libraries. I run a P5/90 and have never had a problem with 3DS. I know many others who run 3DS flawlessly on the 90's, too. Gus's suggestion that it could be another component such as memory makes a lot of sense to…
I think Brent Malnack, of Positron, has been on the forum a few times lately and mentioned the DMM (dynamic motion module). Should be ready soon… John Tissavary | LUNA cie, inc
Don't give the Yost group sh*t, they have very little to do with R4. Talk to adesk about it. John Tissavary | LUNA cie, inc
Wow, Dave. Digimation to the rescue once again! Very exciting. John Tissavary | LUNA cie, inc
I use Nova stuff too, on the PC and really like it. I'm still just tar-ing on SGI, but I'd like to have a more flexible interface.
Wanna get together sunday? John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
I can relate 100%! the dangers of 3DS… John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
I called a local (San Francisco) network specialist to come over and hook up my UNIX box to my PC's. It is a relatively simple thing, from what I understand, but I'd always rather pay somebody who knows what they're doing than kill too many hours trying to figure it…
I have to agree here 100%. I burned myself a couple of times early on, and my mentor at the time kept whispering in my ear: "save early and often". Now I regularly save and hold files – after any substantial operation, or whenever I start some heavy "tinkering". The…
my handle is "lunacie@hooked.net", where I do most of my e-mail these days. I'm definitely sold in internet. Hopefully I'll get a dial-up of some sort for my unix box one of these days, although I think it might be a tad pricey, still. John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
Have you checked out the metareyes IPAS? It looked quite nice, from what I saw at siggraph, but I don't know much more than that… John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
Hi Jonas. We should get together some time, again. You free anytime soon? cheers, John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
I'm not positive, but I think Elastic Reality has programs that will do this. I believe my Exabyte/Abekas driver does .rgb conversion – but it's made for streaming to exabyte, not just file conversion =-( John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
Quite often Japanese (and other godless heathen foreigners' ) manufacturing techniques and quality rival and/or surpass US stuff. I know SGI uses Toshiba RAM for their Indigo/Onyx/Challenge machines. John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
I'm glad to hear you're experiencing video success. John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
What chipset is your motherboard based on? I had problems with an OPTI based motherboard and its PCI spec, which the Vibrant drivers couldn't find the MGA board on. Switching to an Intel Neptune chipset made everything ok. John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
3D Studio is not sold through retail stores or mail-order firms, only through Adesk Authorized Multi-media dealers. It would behoove you to find a dealer in your geographic vicinity who knows how to use and support the program, since Autodesk doesn't have an official support system other than this forum…
Lesson no. 1: Never believe what a dealer tells you. I have yet to find a computer hardware dealer that knows diddley squat about 3D Studio, except for Greg Pyros and a few forumites here (the minority, I assure you). Your dealer's probably got higher sales margins with the DX100.…
I would bet money that the DX100 is noticeably SLOWER than the P5.90, optimized or not. I _could_ be mistaken, but you should do some serious research before you go with the "cheaper" box. I've got a P5.90 and it renders typically 3 times faster than my AMI Enterprise III…
I'm VERY glad to hear that you're open to updating your excellent, if not a tad aged, IPAS2 routines. I really love the functions, and just get warm and fuzzy all over thinking how great they'd be with real-time previews, interactive controls, and the generally more fleshed out form of…
I basically devote an hour or so (used to be two, but I'm really busy right now) to CIS and Internet access. I'm on a couple of listervers on the "net", and also check into a few Usenet groups now and then (not religeously, however). Schedule is tight, though. Wish…
The best alternative to quickpass or single frame recording is an Abekas or Accom digital disk recorder (no compression). They are fast, efficient, don't drop frames, don't get worn out heads, but do cost a bit more than Diaquest's stuff. Still, at $11k for the A65, it's not completely out…
The program is produced in Vancouver, BC by Limelight Productions, using SGI's and SoftImage. I learned this from one of Limelight's animators on the internet (could have been an impostor, but his net domain name seemed authentic).

#Resolution Question
Message #128192
I highly suggest you call a local video post production facility (that uses digital medium as well) and get some grounding in video. This will help you immensly when creating/designing/rendering animations for video. You'll want to ask questions about NTSC color problems, resolution, pixel aspect ratio, etc…. A few good…
Get an _Adaptec_ SCSI controller (if you go SCSI). They are rock-solid, tested to the most stringent anal-retentive standards, and don't mess up 3DS. I've got 3 different types (ISA, EISA, PCI) in my machines and have NEVER had a problem with any, except for a beta flavor EISA whose…
3DS will not run under NT at all, and it is not set up to run under a dual processor setup on its own (DOS), so dual processors is not going to help there. John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
The modeling program I was talking about is Alias PowerAnimator. John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
Were you able to run 3DS with this board prior to installing the new drivers? John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
In addition to what Jonas posted, you can also acheive geometric dents without purchasing additional IPAS routines by using the boolean function in 3DS. Often you'll need to tessellate objects before doing this, if there aren't any vertices in the area. I'm not sure what the threshold on that is,…
The application I use, other than 3DS, requires a three button input for separate x,y, and z coordinate control. Very handy! – I guess I'll have to get the puck, though I don't really like pucks or mice that much. John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
The Accom is basically an Abekas clone – it uses the Abekas and UNIX file formats, so as long as the machine can read your file input (tar, ethernet or whatever) the YUV conversion should work.
Looks like I'll get an ArtZ or two, myself. I checked it out at Seybold, and besides the idioting absence of a third button on the pen it seems like a great little tablet. I like the size of the stylus, but I do have one complaint: it's too light…
Drug intake scenes, huh? . That'll probably be the closest I'll get to drug intake for quite some time (hopefully ). John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
>>How can I create the signs and put them on top of tiles
It's ok that the camera's lines are not vertical – you should adjust the camera so that the view looks pleasing and appropriate in the camera viewport. If you need to adjust the angle of tilt, then the camera's ROLL option can do that. Just roll the camera one way…
I always went with AMI motherboards. Expensive but super reliable and super fast. I've never heard of anybody who had troubles with AMI, FWIW – you may want to check them out instead of going with cheapo mfg's John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
Too bad you didn't like Amsterdam… it's definitely not for everyone, but I really love it. And the Reichsmuseum is a one and only. I'm saving my pennies and carving out a time for vacation (yeah, right…) – I've got to get out of here before I go insane! John…
I am definitely in the market for a WACOM. I'm not familiar with the model numbers though – is this a UD or SD series? Also, do you have the 4 button puck for any of these? If yes, then e-mail me some $$$ John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
Geez, I've been a big fan of neurotransmitters ever since my hallucinogenic days… . Nowadays I get my neuro fix from staring at SVGA screens and moving polygons and splines around . I'd love to see the animation. John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
Bathtub would be great for the duckie, but mine's too small for me =-( John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
Try swapping hd/controller if a memory housekeeping doesn't do the trick… John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
I can only assure you that you'll be happy with MAX. John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
