New User ID Number…
Message #22378
Just for future reference, I will only be using my personal CIS ID in the future. My personal ID number is: 70413,3450 Don't send any mail to this account as it is terminating today. -MM
Aspect Ratio Problem.
Message #21759
I just discovered that the aspect ratio setting in Render/Setup/Config does not work with the VGA320x200 Driver. If you render 320×200 @ 0.82 aspect ratio the image comes out looking the same as a 320×200 @ 1.0 aspect ratio. If I switch to a different display driver, say a 640×480…
I have a Colorado 120 tape backup, but I think my software may be and old version. If you send a tape, please send the version of Software you used to make the tape. -MM
Sure, my address is: Mike Morrison 7120 Shoreline Drive, Suite 2105 San Diego, CA. 92122 Thanks. As far as the Sorcery name goes, its not serious. And besides, its more towards "Source"ry as in Source Code. I got the impression years ago that Image Alchemy was _serious_ about this stuff.…
Why doesnt Tom hang out here on CIS? I don't recall ever seeing any input from him here. He would be a very good resource. -MM
I can do it. The question is exactly how much control does he need? If he wants realtime texture mapped polygons, then contact Sense8 @ (415) 331-9148. If he would be satisfied with the "railroad" tour of his future home (but still interactive, aka 7th Guest) go for 3DS and…
That is an issue that I've often thought about. Isn't it possible for a renderer to analyze which elements of the screen move between frames, then set up a bounding box around the elements that do move, and only render them? And speaking of bounding boxes (the mind sure works…
Great request! Why didn't I think of that… I've got some models where the viewports are just a blob of white lines, even at 1024×768! I find myself constantly selecting and deselecting items just to turn their wireframe to red so it can be seen! -MM
I've had a few other ideas on games, but unfortunately they have worked themselves into our _real_ games, and thus been disqualified for Public Domain… Although I may still come up with a few more ideas here and there… As far as your Message base downloads, you should grab a…

Message #21432
I was just thinking how selection sets in the keyframer, combined with the ability to animate individual vertices would really help character animation. For example imagine a persons arm, you could select and link the vertices on the forearm to a dummy object and select and link the vertices on…
I would use the WAVES.PXP instead of RIPPLE.PXP, also to help wrap it up into a ball, you might try the Modify\Vertice\Bend or Modify\Object\Bend. Just be careful that the vertices don't travel through each other during the Morph back to a flat sheet. You may have to create a few…
#Honey I Blew up the Kid
Message #21328
There was some discussion about this movie earlier this year regarding the use of 3D Studio in it. Does anyone know where and when 3DS was used in the movie? -MM
Gary, you might try HiJaak from Inset Systems. They have a DOS and a Windows version. It converts a myriad of graphics formats, and can be run from the command line for batch control. But it even lets you convert entire directories within the program, so I seldom use the…
I would start by making a Grid with the GRID.PXP routine, then use the Wave.PXP routine with some radical settings to get some radical waves dude. Next do a little vertice manipulation on the waved sheet, to make it more crinkled, or perhaps into a rough ball shape. Then just…
Say, I logged in to your BBS and say the threads. They look great, but I can't afford to download long distance to Dallas from San Diego. Why don't you upload them here? Uploads are free you know. And I have ways of getting them from here at a much…
(Well… don't let Gary see this… but actually I _do_ want it for animation! I just know Gary's Standard "Impractical" remark to raytracing request. I'm sure if they go through the trouble to implement it, it will be available in the Keyframer.) (-MM)
No problem, just call Chris Allis at AutoDesk (415) 491-8727. He's with developer relations and can get you the new Animator C libraries, for FLI and FLC files. BTW whats your application? Game? Multimedia? -MM

New Keyframer Tracks Dialog – Something heirarchical in nature that can be zoomed in and out of in detail. So you can group all the keyframes relating to a given object Group of Objects Object Group of Elements Element Group of Vertices/Faces Vertice/Face Then you can manipulate the keyframe dots…

Hi Bob, Just thought I would pass along this little list for 3DSr3… Inverse Kinetics – Gravity, Friction, Weight, Surface detection i860 Support – To give the the 80×86 enough kick to handle large models with 100K+ faces Built-in IPAS Interpeter – To streamline the programming process for non-programmers. Perhaps…
Contact Chris Allis at AutoDesk (415) 491-8727. When the IPAS SDK is available he'll be the person to talk to. -MM
Well, to be honest and give my _big_ secret away, I used Grasp… Yes, I know its a worthless wimpy way to create _serious_ programs, but I just wanted something quick. Including, rendering, modeling and programming, the whole game took about 5 hours. Just wait till you see the stuff…
Great! I'll log on today and start downloading… -MM
Just another trick you might try is to create simplified versions of you objects for the distance shots, then as the camera gets close, cut to the complex objects. Video post can be used to fade between the two takes. -MM
SIGGRAPH
Message #20567
Hey, lets have some details about what was at SIGGRAPH for us unfortunate folks who couldnt make it… Did we miss out on a new cool 3DS t-shirt? What happened at the Users Group meeting on Monday? Details, Details… -MM
Dan, I think you'll need Nancy Fultan's User ID. I've never heard of her around hear and she doesnt appear on any user searches… Sorry. -MM
I'll whip up something for you… As soon as the IPAS SDK gets released… -MM
Great Request! -MM
hehehehehe…. Shey Pher Mat Erials Ed E Torr Grid X. Tents -MM
I also use the HP IIc. And it works great! I usually scan in Millions of colors, then load the image in PhotoStyler for touch-up and then convert it to 8Bit color (since all of my output is in 8Bit anyway.) and then save it as a GIF to be…
Philled, Somehow your message to the person that uploaded the OPACME.3DS got routed to me. Or at least it had my name attached to it (no CIS ID). Anyway, I didn't upload the OPACME.3DS file. -MM
3D Studio Messages DBASE
Message #20560
I would like to get some feedback on the file ASOFTM that I uploaded. If you have any suggestions, or have an older library of ASOFT-3D Studio messages let me know. Maybe I can include them in my next 'compile'. Thanks. -MM
Hmmm, I originally lofted the roof, with the walls and floor so the normals were facing out. I then used Surface\Normals\Object_Flip to point the normals inward, after that I wound up deleting the faces that made up the walls and floor. So I'm pretty sure the normals are facing the…
Sure! Here it comes! -MM
3DS supports TIF files as textures. Just click on the *.TIF button when assigning your texture file. If you want to convert images from TIF/PCX to TGA check out GWS (The Graphics Workshop) in the COMART Forum. -MM
I wish 3DS had a simple Align Vert/Horz. function, but what I do is use selection sets and the the Modify\Vertice\2D-Scale command. Then use the Tab key to restrict your movements to vertical or Horizontal. Then go to a viewport that is parallel to the plane you want to align…
Sounds like a clipping problem. Try setting your "Z-Clip-Near" to a smaller value. Its under the System Options Menu and in your 3DS.SET file. Either that or move your camera back away from the object. -MM
I usually use PKZip and then use ZIP2EXE to make it a self-extracting EXE file. But I think most service bureaus can PKUnzip a file. I have gotten as high as 97% compression on 24Bit uncompressed TIFs. -MM
Hey! A Siggrapher online! Tell us unfortunate folks who couldnt make it. What is on Gary's Hot new Demo tape? Any cool new IPAS stuff? -MM
The V shaped roof was lofted as one object. Both halves are part of the same object. There are only 2 vertices one at each end of the peak. Like this. 1 2 ______________ /\ \ / \ \ /________\ \ \_____________\ Would the lofter have _not_ welded the vertices?…
#Shadow "leaking"…
Message #20224
Whats the deal with objects, where spot lights "leak" through the edges when you have shadows turned on. I just uploaded SHADPROB.ZIP which has a simple upside-down "V" shape. The shape is the roof of a room. I created the shape by lofting it. But when I put a spotlight…
Thats tough. I just use lots and lots of previews until it looks "right". And with the previews, shell out to DOS and use Trilobytes Play to view them. The Preview\Play does not always play back at a constant speed. You might try turning the display of paths on. That…
What are these "Genetic" Algorithms all about? Plant/Organic 3D object creation? -MM
Boy! I can't tell you how much voice mail I left! I almost got to the point of programming my phone with Chris' number! (As if I _knew_ how to program my phone…All I know is that somehow I got the Tech Support number for Sound Blaster programmed into #1.…
Well, I've had some success in shattering things by using the new Create\Element\Explode command in the 3D Editor. If you need more faces for a realistic looking explosion, then use the Create\Face\Tesselate option. To make the shattered post look solid, you may need to model both broken pieces along with…
Actually I'm not involved with IPAS, The Yost Group, or Autodesk…yet… I think the person to contact is Grant Blaha at AutoDesk, or you might try Chris Allis at Autodesk (415) 491-8727. -MM
Sure, thanks for the consideration. From my contacts I understand the Intel i860 libraries are just about ready to ship. I believe they are in Beta at any rate. -MM

#Play 0.80 Problem.
Message #20112
Say, I've been playing some more with Play 0.80 and it _does_ crash on animations that were generated in 3DSr2. It also crashes on two different 486s. Should I upload an offending FLC file to you? -MM
Do you want to know how to do this in 3DS or AniPro? Is the output for Video or VGA? -MM
You know Martin, I almost lost my HEAD over Chris's slow response. Between April 1st and Last week I had to call EVERY week to ask them where our AniPro FLC libraries where. Every week I got a different answer. My employer got so frusterated that he had one of…
Dude! Is that an overseas CIS ID? If so its "3DS does not." not "3DS do not.". Anyway, small issue. Also the expression is "In fact" not "In face". To answer your question. The Yost Group is the group that produced 3D Studio. Its headed by Gary Yost. As far…
