Portable animation… Bring the whole shabang right to the studio's 1". I like that idea! BTW: I seem to remember seeing a msg a few posts back about the PVW-2800 having problems with head clogs, mechanism problems when you beat on it for single frame edits. Might be worth looking…
My apologies Heather… When I meant Bix I meant the Byte Information Exchange. I'll see if I can find it (the driver) and email it to you directly. Sorry for any inconvenience. – greg
Thanx Gary. I just wanted to alleviate your fears that the software was not going to be tested on anything other than a T16. Wouldn't do that. – Greg
Kevin, I've had (and seen) excellent results from the following imaging labs: F&S Inc., 1019 14th St., PO Box 748, Columbus, GA 31901 (404)324-6308 Image Center, 1011 Second St., Roanoake VA 24016 (800)433-8829 Contact Fred Morgan at F&S and ask to see their * gorgeous * B size color seps…
Gary – Just leave the forwarding number for which island you'll be on so we can all contact you there (voice). Grin. Just kidding. Have a great vakay. – greg
Gary, regarding ADI drivers for controllers… Maybe there's another driver product `lurking' in the wings here from Jake Richter's company, Panacea. Eh? – greg
Rock… Please let us know how you fare with the BCD ADI conflicts. Hope some of the suggestions helped. Good Luck. – Greg
Heather… Yes, the ATI Ultra is sort of a `speciality' card. It does work with all `non-graphic' oriented DOS programs. As soon as you start needing graphic calls, there is no `standard' chipset emulation on the board (like Tseng ET3000/4000, etc…) I hope the Vermont driver works for you… (If…
I believe that you'll have to find some way of meshing those objects (or rebuilding them in the shaper/lofter) if you want them in the 3DS model. I haven't used ASG's product. Can you generate meshes from there? – greg
Wow Jeff… You just proved my point. There really * are * real-life configurations that I'm trying to test out. (I take it that you used composite directly off the T16 for your animations?) You've got me on the PVW-2800… My feeble memory fails me. – Greg
I agree 100 and 1 percent Aaron. The PC is the * least * expensive way (at least now with the introduction of 3DSr2) to get a quality animation down to either tape at NTSC rezs or film rezs. I also agree with you that just having an animation platform…
Gary… I think if Rock plays around with moving his BCD TSR's into high memory (or low), it will end the memory conflict with the .exp drivers. Yes, QEMM again! Regarding the Targa16… I * always * use an AT Vista hooked via RGB to my 21" Nanao multifreq monitor.…
Roger, it depends on the dxf file. If the architectural model was created using ACADr11 using AME, then the model will have to be meshed (SOLMESH) before you can expect to see correct 3D solids in 3DSr2's DXF imports. – Greg BTW: You can export 2D (plan view) DXFs and…
Mark… If you're only looking for 640x480x8-bit color to NTSC, I believe the older WIllow Peripherals VGA-TV adapter can be purchased around that price now (I've used mine since 1989 and it works fine for getting images to tape and for presentations on large screen TVs, though the text is…
Ahem… Heather I should make it plain that the ATI Ultra is VBE compliant to 640×480 resolutions using their driver. (Don't want to give the company a `black eye' here, cause I do like their products). – Greg
Heather, you probably purchased the ATI Ultra card to accelerate your Windows functions (if I'm correct in assuming this). The ATI Ultra uses their own proprietary Mach 8 fixed function accelerator chip. This is like S3, Inc.'s 86C911 chip (which is a fixed functioned acceleration chip also). Most S3 cards…
(Continuation of the BCD/VTRPADI problem Rock Richardson is having). Use QEMM to a) load the BCD TSR high (or force it low if you can) b) use QEMM to exclude the area of ram that the BCD driver uses by setting it in your config.sys statement. Hope this helps… -…
Doug… Any type of commercial gain from a beta copy (or press copy) of 3D Studio is prohibited (that's the word I got from my contact at Adesk last year when I reviewed it… Sorry I can't remember his name at the moment). I've adhered to that policy strictly. When…
Rock. I know the feeling. I've spent the last two days getting a Targa 16 up and running correctly (the first problem with the RCPADI drivers was fairly simple, Gary Yost and Kevin from CSA here helped me fix that one in less than a day). The remainder of the…
Rock… Have you added the device driver targap.sys with the following switches in your config.sys file? device=c:\tplus\targap.sys b0 md i220 d6 (assuming that your I/O address for the frame buffer is at 0x200). There's some additional info on setting the Targa+ tmode utilities on page 51 of the 3DSr2 install/performance…
Gary… I spoke with Diaquest a little earlier. Yes, you can use the copycom utility from DOS (or any other parameters set in DOS will be `passed-through' to 3DS's VTR control (like the pre-roll functions I mentioned in the earlier post). Most VTRs have a `slack-tension' timeout built into them…
Yes… It's all in there (it's just knowing where to find specific data). Much onliged for pointing out what I had overlooked Gary – gl
#VTR control
Message #12113
Gary. Perhaps I've missed this somewhere or my DiaQuest drivers are not up to date. Is there a way of setting the unthread time for the VTR thru 3DS.SET? I currently set my preroll times (at least 3-5 secs) from DOS and that works very smoothly after setting the inpoint…
It will be extremely interesting to see what these folks come up with using 3DS2 (as if the CD isn't inspiring enough!) – Greg
#RDPADI solutions
Message #12107
Kevin and Gary… Thanx for the RDPADI solutions with the TGA/16 adapter. (I always bow to higher intelligence ). – greg
Hi Albert… Fancy meeting you here (heard from Steve Kennedy lately?) Regarding the hard copy images from 3DS, the easiest way is to send your lower rez tgas to any service bureau (I use Image Center in Roanoake VA). They always rescale the image for 35mm output. It's usually WYSIWYG.…
Bryan… Tempra pro reminds me of scaled down (or up version) of GSL's Sable software. It's pretty handy for doing 8-bit image manipulation. There is also a Hercules Graphics Station version and (if I recall correctly) does full 24-bit at 512×482 on standard VGA monitors. It's AOK. (I've used both…
I have the same feeling Aaron. The new additions are pretty great. I'm definately spending my fair share of time getting use to all the new goodies … With the selectable resolutions, 3DS has always had the capabilities to render at film resolutions. Perhaps these new features will make H'wood…
Eli and jack. Thanx for the mag info. I think I have a copy of the IEEE Spectrum around … I'll contact Cinefax directly. – Greg
No problem Rock. Good luck. _ greg
BTW: Regarding compression techniques, has anybody out here had a chance to work with the Webb compression programs yet? From what I've read, it is a four pass recursive procedure that can shrink a 1mb file to * 638 bytes… * I don't know if this is a lossless procedure…
Rock. You might try out the ARJ compression program (by Robert Jung). It allows you to simultaneously compress LARGE (very LARGE) targa files accross multiple volume diskettes (it's lossless compression). Works well for me in getting those huge flics and prepress renders off my two 344mb SCSI's. I'm not sure…
Kevin… I wish * more * dealers took the same tack that your group does. Though I don;t like to admit it much, but at one point in time I had three computer stores in the area (I was the founder, not the backer). I left on a sore note…
Gary. Could you post an address for Cinefex magazine? I'd love to read more about the T2 tech details of the animations/morphing. The T2 effects have been getting * alot * of exposure in just about all of the video trades we get here. The Los Angeles `nuked' sequence was…
Thanx for the roto-tips Gary. I'll do a little more research on the D1 stuff and give Abekas a call in the very near future. Glad to hear that you're entertaining the CD/install idea. – Greg
Thanx David… It will be in the mail by the weekend. – Greg
Heheh Kevin: Caught me on the * revised * pricing, eh? . Yes, I worked with a AT&T authorized dealer about three/four years ago. At that time (with all the bells and whistles, like flares, etc…) I seem to recall an $18K price point; however, all I can say is,…
Gary and Bruce… If you've got this on tape, I'd like to cover it for a possible ByteWeek piece. I'll check with my editor in NYC tommorrow morning and see if there's a possible story in the works here. I'd love to see any footage that you folks are taping…
Gary. Will do on the Video Post and NTSC field render tests. I'm working on some `live' video rotoscoping techniques at the moment (using a Diaquest DQ-50P controller and a single 3/4" VTR… Will see if that's possible… from what I'm reading it looks like it should be a snap).…
Thanx Gary… That was the quickest response to a `help' msg I've ever recieved online. . I'll give it a whirl and let you know how the nvr suggestion worked. – Greg
Jim… The Relysis RE-5155 will pull 1024×768 SVGA no problem, but is interlaced at those rezs. I've had that model for a couple of years and they've probably got a similar model out that will handle non-interlaced SVGA freqs. Might be worth a call to them (408)945-0587 for some updated…
Martin. I'm pleased the article had some influence on your decision to get involved with 3D Studio. At the time of the article, I had been working with GSL's Topas software for quite a number of years. When 3DSr1 hit the streets, I didn't think that any animation software under…
David: Thanx for the reply. That's interesting regarding the local bus machines. Personally, I haven't used one but the word on the street is that the C&T LBV stuff is pretty hot. As always in this industry, we'll have to see which standard gains the most acceptance. I'm looking forward…
Kevin… Thanx for the thumbs up (and crtiques). Yes, I `sweat' the tech details as much as the next writer (nothing like mass public humiliation set in print, eh? ). I've tried the solution you mentioned (@ address D000, targa set at 247), but haven't tried the QEMM exclude yet.…
Gary… Thanx for the `kudos' on last year's review of 3DS1. (I was supposed to present at last year's NCGA Adesk press conference when you folks unveiled Animator Pro… I didn't realize that you folks had included my 3DS review in your press kits… I was honored. One of the…
Gary. Thanx for the quick reply. The current system configuration is using a standard SpeedStar w/Tseng ET4000 chipset. I had been using Panacea's Panamate drivers in 3DSr1 for 1024×768 rez for the RCPADI main editor display. I thought that the drivers may have been the culprit and reedited 3DS.SET to…

Color Postscript
Message #11759
Ken… I usually take the resulting .GIF or TGA image from 3DS to PhotoStyler. I color correct and rotate the image 90 degrees and print from within Windows (which has QMS PostScript drivers… I use the QMS Color Script 100 – model 30i). If you * do * find a…

MONITOR FOR TARGA+
Message #11757
Mitch… I use a Relisys RE-5155 monitor with my Targa adapters. The 5155 has the capabilities to sync to the Targa's 15.75KHz (horizontal) bandwith. The monitor is fairly reasonably priced (I've seen it – somewhere – around the $300 mark mailorder, but don't hold me to it. There is one…

Gary… Count me in as a contributor if the AAPRO/3DS newsletter looks like it will come to fruition. I'm a Byte reviewer (and five star fan of 3D Studio/AniPro… I speak with Jim Kent as times on Bix). I was very impressed with 3D Studio r1 (after using Topas/Crystal for…

Martin (and George). I've worked with some of Viewpoint's meshes in 3DS and they're AOK. Just weld the mesh and assign a smoothing group. I've played around with the COW.DXF file using Matrox's MG-3D Ultra adapter (realtime animation/Gouraud shading within acad11). Looks nice. I'll upload my `imploding cow' experimental 640×480…
