Heard this and thought it might appeal to you: Bill Gates died and went to the Peally Gates. Saint Peter stopped him and said "You have lead a good life, not outstanding, but good. Therefore I am going to allow you to choose your destination, Heaven or Hell." "Gee, that's…
re: NT and DOS for render farms All my DOS stations started out as reliable WFW clients. By starting this way you can be sure your comminications are behaving correctly. In my case all my stations are using NetBeui as a protocol. Not great for big LAN's (too much broadcasting)…
PMJI, I'm running a NT Server with 6+ dos stations on it with no problems. at dos I do NET LOGON the first time thru you will have to do a NET to browse the network and establish your mapping of drives. I have a simple batch file for each…
Problem solved…..but a future gotcha. I ripped apart the material…still didn't solve it. I blew out all the lights…brought ambient up a bit…NO FLICKER. Ok it's gotta be a light I started killing off lights until I hit the right one. One light, a backlight has the source and target…
thanks for the idea, but if you see the note to Steve Levy, nothing else (i'm sure) is happening in the scene, just a slow camera move argh…. thanks again Todd
very lightly 15% nothing fancy picked diffuse 10%+ luminence for spec 10%- for ambient. set to 0 every thing in scene is locked down except for the camera. And it's delta is constant and small …20' dropping to 8' over 100 frames from a long distance away from the object…
FP errors….I thought 3DS did everything in integers nope the texture is basiclly grey with a 50% cement.cel texture in it. I was looking for something fast. I went overboard on spanish tile faces Todd

Help… I have a sequence that I have rendered, an architectural walk thru. at one point I am slowly lowering the camera from 30' to 6' above the walking plane. Over a 200 frame sequence, I get about 30 randomly spaced bad frames. Note: nothing in the scene is changing…
Thanks…the par is a lot of fun…but it really makes you rethink you timing when it comes out so smooth. Thanks again Todd
Thanks for the info Todd
#PAR Methods Q
Message #193811
HI, Just getting my par working, all seems ok but… One machine in my farm created some bad frames, that need to be re-rendered. Is there any method for inserting a frame into an animation? or do I need to spool all the tgas in order onto the par again?…
I had a simular problem a while ago. If your short cut control keys still work it may be that your grid snap is set bigger then your screen. Try forcing the mouse into the pull down menu area. If you appears up there then adjust your snap. Todd
Figures you would answer! I solved the problem by reading your book right after I had posted my question. I'm going stick my head under the slurpee machine now thanks Todd

hi all, I just got around to upgrading to ver 4c2 and seemed to have developed a strange bug. I'm almost sure when I got ver3 I loaded up the 3dsocket.lft and looked it over reviewing, how to double a path back on itself. So, I just now came up…
clock syncing… yea this has been a problem. I'm still getting up to speed on NT (way to many days on unix) thanks for the info Todd
sounds just like my problem. Thanks a lot Todd

hi all, I'm setting up a rendering farm, and slowing moving forward. Got a problem with one machine though It's a zeos pantera p/90 with 16mb. it kept locking up as a slave during render so I did a full install and tried it out as a master. Every time…
John, THANK YOU!!! solved problem number 1 for today now for lunch…. Thanks again Todd
Michele, Thanks for the offer but…things worked out. John's message regarding MIRROR-CLIP-ANY saved the day. Thanks again for the offer, it was unexpectedly nice. Todd
#HELP reflect problem
Message #185256
Hi, I hope you can resolve a problem I'm having. It has been discussed on CIS a little, and I'm pretty sure I'm doing things right…but I get the wrong image the problem 2 autoreflect windows near a corner of a building each has it's own material applied (win1 win2)…
addendum, I've added 3 more stations if any one of them fails net queue shows the next numbered station as failed the the one that failed as ok hmmmmmmm. Todd
Thanks for the info… I played with truespace 1 and notice the limitations also Todd

RELECT PROBLEMS
Message #184908
Hi all, I've still got auto reflect problems . but I have reduced it to a test case. I have two windows near a corner of a building. each has the same material (auto-reflect-flat) each was assigned the material at face level. Looking at the corner from a 45 deg…
your home alive! what is particle pack 2 gonna do? T
Thanks for the info Todd
I had built them all in elevation form. applied the reflection, and then rotated the sides into place. do the faces have to remain coplaner or only while they mapping is applied Reflections work if each glass piece is it's own object after the rotation. Thanks again Todd
I forced my boss to play with truespace, talk about creative iconization. "What to I press now?" "find the render button" "which one is that?" "got me" They should have just numbered the buttons and used the help prompt. Actually, they were down most of wednesday…seems a virus was amok…

Automatic reflection mapping: I have gone back and ran the tutorials regarding auto reflect and flat -mirror trying to get a handle on a problem. I create/object/get shape a group of squares that became windows. 1. I tried to set a flat mirror to the object….no reflections 2. I create/face/detach…
#Help defend 3DS
Message #184286
I'm recruiting arguments. For better or worse, I invited my boss to the Siggraph exhibits. My hope was to reinforce the concept that it does take some investment to achieve a quality product. My problem: TrueSpace 2, simply 3d, etc. Here I was trying to prove that 3ds is great,…
ok, Add me to the list of the lacking. Since time is running short, and no invite in site, how about E-mailing or posting Venue Time Directions Thanks Todd
Lofting Help
Message #182678
Tying together N and N+X vertices would be tough. Check out the 'solid modeler completer' by Sysphus (I think) they have some demos in the IPAS file area. It allows you to create more complex/complete shapes that you could do via the shaper/lofter but does it parametriclly. I understand it's…
kevin, It was probably was that snide crack about vega's. I had a monza for 8 years and it never told me about it's cousin trying to eat your foot Todd
Martin, Thank you for your ideas. Seems like it will be an involved process, especially when I don't have a roof plan to work from …only photos. But should look good in the end. Thanks Todd
#Spanish Tile Roof?
Message #176439
Hi Again, I need to build a roof covered with spanish tile (half rounded tube kind) any suggestions on how to proceed? It needs to look pretty good, part of a demo tape, and will be used in both animation and still Thanks in advance Todd
James, I work for a civil/surveyor using 3ds for court cases. You should be very careful about the data you use for topo. If its the basis of the case, I would recommend that you have the data field collected and have a mesh built from it. This is how…
Kevin, Thanks. Yea I knew about the optimization, I was searching for a way to push the interpolation up in one area and down in another….without manually adding the vertices, which I now belive is impossible Thanks again. Todd
#archway model prob
Message #175934
Again, thanks for the info I seem to run into problems keeping symmetry between vertices left to right. If you are lucky with the snap you can hit the midpoint of the arc, delete 1/2 and mirror the balance. I've used autocad since 2.6 so the shaper tools still seem…
Just thought of another condition: Here I have this really nicely built autocad elevation. All the arcs are arcs nice smooth double reverse curves, etc. Is it typical that you must segment (acad=break) all these nice arcs, either in autocad or 3ds, to have decent control over vertex location? if…
I'm not sure how I would do this. The arch I have is in elevation view and I extrude it 2' in the Z in the lofter The trim is more or less a have circle. I only see how to build it using traditional carpentry. How could I loft…

hi again, Yes optimize works when going thru the lofter. I was running into problems with editor create/object/get shape which I always had left to 'shape detail' 'high' always helps to dig the book out from the pile thanks again Todd
Thanks….that should do it. Todd
#arcs…ACAD->3DS help!
Message #174194
Hi, Got a modeling question. Suppose you want to model an arched doorway, and LOTS of arched windows I have a great looking elevation in autocad, that dxf's nice into the shaper. the problem: a great arc in autocad is a pain in the butt in 3ds. If I push…
Michele, You have probably hit the nail (whose hammer …I don't know) When I want to do a 3 minute fly over, I was just hitting the 'key spots' (be here in 3 seconds….there in 4 etc) I guess I need to go back and 'mess' up the smoothness that…
