Thanks Tim, but I'm running the Diamond P9000 card. I should call and find out what's happening with them. James
Hello Yann, Well, after all that! Good luck, cuz you'll need it! Just teasing (sort of). But definitely drop me a line if you need a hand. I can't promise miricles (or spelling), but we all should be able to chip in something. As for running Targa+, it should be…
Michael, Thanks for the thoughts… very well put. I have never actually used another keyframer, so my frustration can't be tempered by more sober thoughts of working in true hell. On the other hand, the differences between the keyframer and the other program modules is quite big. I've had the…
I'm sorry. I've forgotten what I was saying. Why should I get a glare filter (I know it's like having to explain the punchline of a joke, but I'm a little slow this morning)? James
Well, this definitely is the next step. Do you know whether on of these tape decks are compatible on the higher platform machines, ie: SGI? If I'm gonna invest the $4000, I'd like to know I can use it for a few years. I'm sure they must be, just running…
Hi Tim, I'm using both 3DS and OS/2 and a Viper VLB P9000 video accelerator. Can I help out? James
Oh, is that a cute little red face I see peering back at me from my monitor… James
Thanks for all the info, John. Boy, that's about $7000 less than what I was quoted for a S-VHS, and controller. Some dweeb figured the video controller alone would be $2000! But I'll tell ya, we're getting there. If I can access these prices from Canada, then things could be…
Okay, that was the fix I had in mind as well, John. I thought there may have been a more straightforward fix, but that's okay – I'll use it. Thanks, man! James
#MORE KEYFRAMER Probs…

Hello again, Well, I know I said I was going to take a break but I just couldn't stay away. Tomorrow. Yeah, I'll quit tomorrow. So I restored myself to my previous state, and am now stuck again. This time, instead of experimenting and getting into trouble (actually, I've tried…
Thanks for the words of wisdom, John. That's what's great about CIS – you get a good virtual pat on the back when you need it. You're right – the animation is the tough part, especially in the abstract. Maybe one day, 3DS will be designed to use those fabulous…
So how much would a S-VHS go for. I'm not in the business of logos, etc, but rather exploring 3D animation more for artistic sakes: movies, short films, etc. I could probably get away with S-VHS for now, considering what I'm doing on 3DS is mostly demo work. Of course,…
Yeah, I know. But I've gotten in the habit of having the program "forgive" me. I guess the keyframer is that much more complicated, so I've got to start looking at those more. I'd do it all the time with booleens, but there it prompts you. Oh well, live and…
I don't know Aaron. I think some messages are archived but I don't know if ours were. Ask the sysop, whoever that is… Thanks for a great talk though. Made me think a lot about what I'd before just taken for granted. James
#KEYFRAME frustrations!!
Message #69630
Hello All, I have to make a comment on the KEYFRAMER in 3DS. I've been using the modellers and materials editor for a couple months now and am extremely please with it. I think the porgram is the most sophisticated piece of software I have ever using on the desktop…
More 3ds stuff

Thanks for the number Keith. Don't need the toll free because that's here in town… James

So how much would you have to pay for say three minutes worth of animation? Do you use the S-VHS as a test rendering device? Why doesn't it provide broadcast quality? How many lines of resolution does it offer?
#HELP – OS/2 probs!!
Message #68543
Hello This is a message to all OS/2 users. Bailey and I couldn't come up with a solution and of course, when there is a problem, I can't wait to fix it. I can't run 3DS in the background. It's fine in the foreground, but the program is suspended once…
Just ask him to show you the hardware lock. If he had no idea what that is then… he be bootleggin'! James
Chances are anyone who can't tell a story (or at least know what makes a great story) will not be a wizard with lighting and editing… Well, definitely editing – that's where the story is told! I'm a strong believer in the fact that everyone should know what it takes…
Okay, thanks Bailey. I thought this would be an easy fix as well, but?…
I can't seem to find this call… I have a few P9000 device calls, but no VVGA.sys or VSVGA.sys… James
Actually, I don't really need my main display to be VIBRANT driven. I think, at the moment. I'm happy with regular VGA. I'm not sure if this affects screen redraws or object colors but I'm going to play with it. Anyway, to update you: nobody at Diamond, but I took…
How would I go about setting this up? I'm still waiting to hear from Diamond, but I know they got my message this morning. I've heard people saying Photostyler doesn't work either but IBM seems to think it does. Their manula lists it as a special app, that "should run…
Okay, first questions: I think this is all related to one problem – video support. I have a Diamond VIPER VLB. Unless you personally use this card, I'm sure you will not know whether there is a driver available. I've left a message for Diamond, so I guess I'll leave…
Hey Bailey, Could you help me with OS/2? I don't want to ask questions yet because I haven't finished my own debugging, but I'd like to know that there is someone out here who knows 3DS and graphics… James
Yeah, you're right Aaron. The Director gets way too much credit for stuff that he may or may not have come up with. In fact, you _never_ know who comes up with a great idea, there's such a long chain: writers, producers, directors, DOPs, gaffer, lamp ops, editors, etc, etc…
Hey Alan, Yep, did it last night (vprmode vesa) – looks fabulous! James
Thanks John…. I actually got the Viper to run Ani Pro – looks great! James
This IS the way to make movies. I've worked on these sets and on sets with upwards of 200 people. The bigger the set, the less that seems to get done (if you can believe it!). I'm a strong believer in _small_ filmmaking. I think in the end, the product…
Well, the DOP might say this, but probably to the Gaffer. I think you're right to question whether a lamp op is an artist. It's true they don't get to make a lot of creative decisions, but it's a good place to learn…
Okay, thanks much Jin for the Viper info! James
I've talked with Adaptec and they say that the board should work – but I have a Bios incompatibility with my motherboard. I'm not sure who to talk to but I'm taking it to the Computer doctor…
Now will this screw up my configuration for windows or 3DS? I guess not 3DS since it has it's own Vibrant drivers… I'm not sure of the procedure here. Run 'vprmode vesa', and then it will create a VESA driver to read from AniPro? My computer has crashed so I…
Does the machine actually say this?!? That's a strange system message… But I will give it a try. I have one set where I may use a bunch of projector lights. But I just upgraded memory, so I wonder if the effect will be the same.
Yeah, I've been looking at AniPro – it looks good. I just have to figure out how to get it to run 640×480 off my Viper board…
Yeah, I improved my rendering by 3x! But of course that means nothing when two hours later I crash the system so good, I can't get into no how! So I'm off to the Computer Doctor this morning (I'm writing from a whole nother system). Hey, does anyone know anything…
Thanks for the info, Michele. I am pretty happy with Photostyler/Freehand (got an amazing deal on them and Pagemaker – $500 Canadian, bout 35 bucks 'Merican) But I will need some animation so we'll see what AniPro can do… James
Actually borrowed a copy to see if it's worth buying, but I can't figure out how to configure it to my Viper VLB graphics board…
Hey John, We actually went for it this morning – got 16 more. In Vancouver it's about $210 per 4meg chip, so about $850 before taxes (add another 14%). We had $350 credit on an old hard drive, that brings the price down some more. I'll tell ya, slapped the…
I think you're right about the method John. Thanks. Maybe r4 will be able to save shots…
Yeah, I used to work set as well – lighting, grip and some sound (just a bit) – sort of a whirl-wind tour. But now I'm happy to hide out in a dark office and help think of all the crazy and stupid things to make the crew shoot. Mildly…
#HELP – Config Ani Pro
Message #67928
Hello, A friend has loaned me Ani Pro so I can use it, before buying it from him – just to make sure. It's version 1.3. I have a Diamond Viper VLB (P9000) video accelerator. But I can't figure out how to configure Ani Pro to SuperVGA. Can anyone help?…

#Like your OS/2?
Message #67888
I guess that's what I wanted to know – if it renders as quickly under OS/2 as under DOS. All that I'd want to do would be writing while it's chugging away, and I've gotten really tired of sitting there watching little red lines ("Did it move? I swear it…
Thanks Brian. I'll wait for a while.
Yeah, I now see I've been sorely misled. I've got a friend who has it so I think I may pop over there for a private demonstration…
Hi John, Yeah, I'm really sinking into the idea of another 16megs. This is just insane. I loose all sense of rhythm working this slow. And I really don't want to contrain myself – this project is meant to show off myself and 3DS in the very best way. Yeah,…
Now I'm starting to see you're method, John and it makes a lot of sense. It just means more paper work to keep track of where each shot starts and ends, which isn't a bad idea anyway. The question is, will the camera path break into seperate pieces, or will…
