James: We're installing two Matrox MGI cards. Some of the stations have the older Impression model; the newer ones use the Millenium. All running MGI drivers, except for the Intergraph TD's, which use custom Intergraph drivers. Apparently, Intergraph paid the $$ to license the necessary OpenGL code or something. I…
Aaron: We're using two Matrox PCI cards. Both their Impression and their Millenium models can be installed in this configuration, and their NT drivers support it. Works very nicely. JSH
Aaron: I'm gonna guess that MAX *will* support dual screens, assuming your current Windows NT display drivers do. We have about 30 NT stations currently configured with dual screens, and all NT applications work across both screens. NT "sees" both screens as one, big virtual screen. You can size and…
#Shopping Cart Model?
Message #190321
Does anyone know where I can find a reasonable fascimile of a shopping cart? It must be fairly accurate dimensionally. Just thought I'd check before I go build my own. JSH
The Win95 shell is also available here on Compuserve (GO MSDN). Note that there are versions of this shell for Intel, PowerPC, Alpha and MIPS processors (while Win95 is only available for Intel processors). JSH
"I feel honored…" Add me to that list (although I don't consider myself worthy of such a distinguished honor). We *may* have actually received an invite, but procurement probably just filed it in that circular file . Jeff Hester Fluor Daniel
Cameron: Maybe NT is SUPPOSED to automatically recognize multiple processors, but I had an experience installing NT 3.5 where that was definately NOT the case. The original "installer" used express setup and it only recognized one processor. Not until we reinstalled NT with custom setup were we able to correct…
Martin: I have a dual-Pentium that someone had originally installed NT using express setup. This defaults NT to a single-processor. The only way to correct it was to re-install NT using the custom installation option. If you watch your prompts carefully, you'll see where to state the number of processors.…
Chris: I use Premiere for post-editing material for in-house multimedia presentations. I work for an engineering company and do a lot of demos for clients who want to see what our capabilities we offer. Most of the presentations are a combination of slide show and live demo. The slide shows…
Chris: Adobe Premiere 4.0 is very cool, and yes, 3DS files will work with Premiere. Premiere can uses the following 3DS-generated files as "clips": Animations: > .FLC > .FLI > Sequentially numbered .TGA, .TIF, etc. Stills: > .BMP > .TIF > .TGA > .PCX There are other formats as well…
Alan: True, NT Workstation supports dual processors, but I understood NT Server to support up to 16 processors. Good luck finding such a machine though. NT Server is also optimized for (what else?) providing services. Also, NT Workstation on a dual processor machine will *not* generally halve processing time…this depends…
David: It IS awesome. I carpool 1-1/2 hours each way to-and-fro work, and two of us play against each other via a LapLink cable. If you think single-user is addictive, wait till you go head-to-head with a real person. Very cool. JSH
#'CARTOONize' IPAS?

Ian: I'd be interested in your script. Send it up! JSH
Michele: Now you of all people should know that we're not just a bunch of geeky engineers. We have artists tucked away in many of our corners, the Graphics, Architectural, Marketing and Design Visualization departments, to name a few. Actually, our system IS optimized. We've got a pretty good setup.…
Doug: Geez, you really know how to take a guy outta context! Contrary to what your message implies, I was NOT referring to existing Alpha investments. What I was referring to was the number of workstations (most of them currently running some flavor of UNIX) already in place. Maybe this…
Doug: OTOH, OS/2 isn't available for the Alpha; NT is. I'm in the process of benchmarking a DEC Alpha, and if it lives up to its specs, it should be a screamer. If apps are as portable as the NT-hype machine implies, being able to run on multiple hardware platforms…
Michele: Why do you consider ray-tracing a "biggie?" For architectural renderings, and especially walkthroughs, I don't see any real return on the processing investment ray tracing requires. But of course, I WAS wrong, once. My main complaint is that they spend BIG bucks on the hardware and software, and I…
Ouch! The back of my head is aching just for *thinking* about that trip. I saw your earlier messages about the training…sounded great. Did you get chance to see ModelView? I have some friends who use ModelView exclusively, but I haven't had the time (or inclination) to learn Yet Another…
Michele: Sounds great! So when should we show up? Better make it about two weeks long to really provide maximum impact. Seriously though, just think about what would come out of such an intense/casual atmosphere, filled with the potpourri (sp?) of 3DS users from around the globe. Blows the mind,…
X2 is an extension to Painter that supposedly allows you to treat images as floating "objects" (ala Altamira Composer). Composite you bitmaps, rearrange to your hearts content, blah blah blah… I say supposedly because I haven't had a chance to work with it…yet. Anyone had any experience with it?
HP LTE 4/25E Video?
Message #62308
I'm trying to configure my HP LTE 4/25E to run at 640x480x256 in 3DSr3, but so far, with no success. HP hasn't been any help, either. The display can do it, but I need to know what driver to use. Has anyone else attempted this?

#Sound Cards
Message #52508
– Reply to message #51875 (already scrolled) Robert: Well folks, the Turtle Beach Multisound came in last week, and it looks like it was well worth the wait (and cost). Granted, all I have to compare it to are the boards I've worked with before (SoundBlaster and SBPro), but there…
David: The daughterboard for the SoundBlaster 16ASP uses EXACTLY the same chips as the Turtle Beach Multisound? How much does Creative Labs charge for this daughterboard? I might consider upgrading from my SB Pro to the 16ASP if the price is right. BTW, I've got a Turtle Beach Multisound on…
Michele: Shouldn't Visual Link be the best way to bring AutoCAD drawings into 3DS? Or were you thinking of using plain-vanilla AutoCAD only? How about a book on bringing files in not only from AutoCAD, but from many different 3D modeling programs (AutoCAD, MicroStation, 3D Concepts, Alias Upfront, etc.)? Hmmm…..…

3DS & Pentium
Message #41430
The May issue of Windows magazine has a review of several alternative processor machines for running Windows NT. DEC's Alpha machine was the standout, with performance in the 80-100 SPECmark range. This may improve even more, as the machine is still being optimized for performance. The article mentions a more…
Brian/Kent: I know that Michele and I didn't have to get approval for the screen captures we did. We did, however, include the standard trademark clause in the front pages of the book. Just a layman's hunch but I'd say as long as you didn't misrepresent the screen captures as…
O.K. folks, here's the hot tip… Using the technique described by Ron Wodaski in VID3D.ZIP (Multimedia Forum, LIB 6), you can bring a Video for Windows clip into 3D Studio, where you can soon process it with Pyros' soon-to-be-released IPAS routines to get animated art-effects. Ron describes how to then…

HP Deskjet 500C ADI
Message #40316
Bryan: Most folks print their images from Windows; the Windows HP500C driver works great, and there are many programs (probably even freeware) that allow printing of all types of graphics files. (some folks borrow a cup of sugar from their neighbors, I borrow his 500c) JH

Richard: You aren't wasting your time learning Animator Pro. It is *extremely* useful for 3DS users; they compliment each other very nicely. You can do all sorts of fun things with animated maps and such. Of course if you're producing seed material for multimedia, Animator Pro is a must. JH

Uh, Larry…what are the two questions??? As far as a MAXimum roof pitch, there is none. There is a MINimum roof pitch however. Post your questions and perhaps we can help. JH

3DS Poster Prints
Message #29788
Angelo: Shoot over the prices for those poster-size 3DS prints, please. JH
Ang: TBS is playing the "Grinch" three times this season…two have already passed though. "Check your local listings…." JH
Evan: Check your email for a reply. JH
Angelo: As Craig said, the Animation Tool Kit (ATK) works with AutoCAD. It *was* updated for AutoCAD R11 (and the SHADE command); it has not been updated for R12 (and the RENDER command). JH
Evan: And re: that same NAVFAC CAD2 bid, were you aware that a judge recently upheld the Centel (Autodesk) protest? Intergraph hasn't won yet. JH
Gus/Phil/Kevin/John: Thanks for giving me a clue. Now the old mono board can *definately* stay on the shelf. -JH
Gus: Really? Installing a mono board slows VGA video response? How so? -JH
Kevin: It's true that I *could* pull the lock and render from the command line, but if you saw my hardware/office configuration, you'd understand why that's not practical (my own fault). I'll probably drop in an old mono card I've got hanging about…it has a parallel port. Now I just…
Gary: Looks like a might have a use for that old mono board yet (you know, the one with the parallel port on it. -JH
#IOMEGA/3DS Problem
Message #26401
Gary: I ran into a conflict with the 3DS hardware lock and an IOMEGA Transportable 90. The Transportable is a Bernouli drive that doesn't require an interface card; it plugs right into the parallel port. Has anyone else reported a similar problem? If so, are there any known workarounds? I…
Michele: Heck, you need to go to the JSH school of corporate tongue-lashing. With a little practice, working for ABC can work to your *advantage* in "dealing with dealers." So SoftVTR's been giving you some grief, eh? I've always been intrigued by the product, but never had any direct exposure…
Jack: Sure enough, I RTFM and figured it out. The mapping option works GREAT! I now have a beautiful filmstrip, sprocket holes and all! Note that the filmstrip does not have individual "frames". The desired effect is of negative/positive contrast. Next step, animating it. Sorry I couldn't be at SIGGRAPH…

#Winding Filmstrip Effect
Message #20058
Jack: Uh, isn't that what I said? If not, that IS what I MEANT to say. I'm getting a handle on how the deformation/twist grid works. It took a bit of experimentation, but I've got a nice, fluid-looking "H" now. My next problem: the map. I created a small cel…
Unraveling Film Effect
Message #19660
Has anyone created a natural-looking strip of film or ribbon winding around? I'm working on a model of a movie reel with film gracefully winding about to form script letters and would appreciate any tips. The mesh is the first trick, then the map. Have you done this or seen…
John: Sounds intriguing. Let hear more about the technique he used. -JH

GIFDXF Translator
Message #12634
A while back, someone posted a 3DS mesh of an other-world mountain scene. The mesh for the mountains was said to have been created using Fractint's Plasma algorithm, saving as a GIF, then using a program called GIFDXF to convert to a 3D mesh (in DXF format). Does anyone know…
