Depends on what you are doing with your final output. 100% is really only a best quality compression. JPEG does support a lossless saving, but I don't think I've ever seen that implemented. 100% JPEG images look darned good in most circumstances. There will be image degredation and artefacting. If…

#Help an Author
Message #188192
I just got a piece of mail from an author in the UK who is working on the next revision of her 3DS book. She happened across my web pages and the 3DS Max stuff that is there. It was her first exposure to Max and she is eager to…

#MSVC++ 2.2 ?!?!
Message #187221
Can't find it now, but I could swear that yesterday I saw it declared here that MSVC++ 2.2 would be required for development work with 3DS Max. I am interested in confirming that this is hooey perpetrated by somebody who doesn't understand the difference between "required" and "known to work".…

Thanks for the shell info. MSDN-CD just came in. My drive is dead for now, but I'd suspect that it's on that too. The July discs. I'm not too concerned though until I get MAX. patience….
>>I thought that MS made some kind of a rule that any software to be developed for WinNT has to be compatible with Win95.>the screenshots of MAX looks like Win95
Also seems that the material morph would make it easier to change the frequency of the flasher. No? – gruhn

http://www.spe.sony.com/Pictures/SonyMovies/09exclsv.html has an illustrated discussion of the creation of the cyberspace scenes. They include concept sketches and stuff. Even a picture of the Keyframer. Kinda fun/interesting.

>> some raytracers are mature, optimized 3D rendering engines that approach the speed of scanline renderers
>> I think all anyone wants is a toggle or button that enables selective, and optimized raytracing features.
Your discussion of ray tracing and speed seems to me to concentrate on relative speeds of raytracers. There are ray tracers that are faster than others. Ray tracers are being sped up. This one ray tracer is even faster than 3ds at raytracing. My experience has been that ray tracing…
>> move the color layer pixel by pixel with my keyboard's arrow buttons
Thanks for the info. Yes, there is a definite trade off for dollars involved. Scanning from photographic and line art sources isn't so bad in general. The big problem comes when trying to scan halftoned colour art. Despeckle helps for that, but is still not a cure-all. – gruhn

Safety pin help
Message #169099
I'm trying to make a safety pin. Last night, I got the wire part down. That was easy. Now for the catch. That is giving me pause for thought how is best to go about it. In R1, so no booleans. Any insight how _best_ to go about it? -…
far out
Message #169096
My R1 got very very funky. Y'all here suggested I start again with the config autoexec stuff. I concurred. So, last night I got around to trying. Completely non-existant autoexec and config. I ran mouse.com and 3DS is working like a dream. Well, I haven't tested it out that hard,…

>>what "new" HP scanner. I was figuring to get the HP II CX which is pretty old
I'm testing out a Microtek ScanMaker II-HR. It seems to be a three pass scanner and suffers from colour alignment problems. I have not found a way yet to fix this. Scans at 600dpi of four colour printed material are pretty nice – the halftone dots are scanned in nice…
#Funny story. ?
Message #167580
At Comdex/ Windows World. I was cruising the 3d programs. Kinda looking for a spline/patch modeler. Found one tucked away in a little corner booth. Talked to one guy. Program looked good. Lost his attention. Grabbed another. Asked about cost. It was more than I wanted to spend and a…
#R1 – Suddenly glacial…
Message #163486
I'm hoping somebody has a clue. I'm running 3DS-R1. It suddenly became killer slow. Minutes to load. Many minutes to draw the 3D editor screen after loading. I even went so far as to deltree and then reinstall _on a different physical hard drive_. I have 20 meg now, not…

#All angles.
Message #152228
I have an object. It has a front and a back and an up. I want to get a picture of it from every angle with every rotation. I did have an animation set up with it turning around and around and around while slowly tipping forward until it swings…

#Why I won't upgrade
Message #136957
Actually, when I find the bucks, I will upgrade. But that's because I'm still running R1. I would have upgraded faster if the splines had made it. I'm pretty sad at making funny shaped stuff, and that just might have helped me out. What's in a name? The cost of…
