SCSI Hard Drive Advice
Message #191301
Ok, time has finally come to break down and get a decent SCSI HD. Probably a 1-1.2G or something. Price IS an issue, but I want something that's relaibale and has a decent transfer rate. I have a PAR, so I won't be looking to do any serious animation work…
> True… but even the simplest, cheesiest solid modeler is worlds better than trying to boolean in 3DS. It's all a matter of perspective. With the new parametrics in MAX, I would like to see some of these new features really work in regards to modeling, else 98% of all…
> True, in r4. I'm hoping against hop that MAX will have a completely different mathematical approach to booleans than the old, tired, lacking boolean approach in the 3D editor in r4…
Wonder if you can run 2 sound cards concurrently? I'm looking to do some serious voice-over work, so a TB is undoubtedly in my future. Just need to get a decent microphone and some decent software, too… Thanx!
> Hmm… I just scanned that original message, so it's possible I missed something. I would have gone back and re–read it, but it looks like it scrolled. Anyways, Not exactly sure what you mean by "behind"… In the case of a subtraction, one object isn't seen at all, you…
> Well, it would take a lot more than that to dismay me with MAX or with YG. And there are a lot more important issues than ray-tracing capabilities, because, as you said, those options will come from SOMEONE. However, I DO think that the time has come, and would…
But… how fast can you record the audio onto CD? I heard CD ROM writers take a long time to write data, and even longer to write audio tracks. My question is: just how long? thanx – jk
If I'm correct, the intention is that the modeler in MAX will be able to animate all interactive functions, including booleans. Just think – booleans that work, AND can be animated! I just pray that we'll be able to perform similar operations on objects sthat are imported from other CAD…
How well do these burners do with audio? And at what ratess will they write?
I second the reccomendation for the PAR/PVR. UNquestionably the best balance between budget and quaity. I would have susggested Razor Pro, which is another package to look into, but their new line of software, called Speed Razor, is too expensive to remain competetive with Premeire. -jk
>> Hey – now THIS I will have to visit!! P.S. you guys need any voices for any audio? You know where to get one! 🙂
Heh – I agree with Alan. I, for one, don't mind the use of pseudos, as long as they're not used to hide behind while flaming or non-constructively criticizing. Yet; a solitary name of "rabbit" with no last name doesn't lend itself to the belivability that it's your legal name…
If you find one, do, indeed, make a note to let me know where to find it. I'd like to play around with MPG videos a little. In any case, I would think they would be more effecient for playing videos than .MOV's and possibly .AVI's, even if you don't…
Just what do you need to PLAY .MPG files, anyways? Or – what would be the BEST way to play them?
> Hmm… an interesting concept you have there. I'll have to look into how that might work further. Unfortunately, I don't know enough of how 3DS specifically manages its data structures at this time to think i could pull it off, unless something in there explains more about the 3DS…
At the tail end of your message: There's no more. I'd like to hear what you were going to say, as I'm not particularly familiar with ASC files…. YET.
Rico, I think Martin said it very well: > If you feel that people are getting along well in the DOS version right now, and hence a WIn95 supported version would be plausable, why not run versison 4 under Win95? Version 4 is a great program. Just because it's not…
An interesting method… Hmm. I wonder, however – when you launch it that way, aren't you actually launchingn into DOS first, and using DOS commands to launch another OS, as opposed to having a completely non-biased OS launcher on its own small partition to send you to whatever OS you…
MAX Questions
Message #187597
> Hey, I appreciate whatever insights/opinions I can get as I, like many others in this conference, have taken a real interest in the future of this product. I'll quickly make a couple comments about what I asked and how you replied; > Right… but I don't seem to recall…
> Hey, that might be worth looking into, especially since I'll be moving to NT as my prime OS, but needing to keep DOS around for a while, and wanting to play around with OS/2 and 95 just for fun. Maybe even UNIX if I ever get my hands on…
GOOD ideas. Similar to what I would have imaged for such a renderer. I look forward to seeing if this becomes reality…
> Actually, I was hoping others, as well as yourself, might read this as to get a variety of opinions. You just happened to be the one giving answers about something I was wondering about Thanx, though! -jk
> Laugh! That's cute…. Heh – if you knew my voice, it would be even funnier; I'd be PERFECT for said announcer! -jk
> Which was my point originally 🙂 That, and the fact that 3DS users won't have to wait for it to come out, as well as paying xtra $$$ for it. Also, 3DS users could then count on a basic system of ray-tracing coherent to all. Fancier, more innovate ray-tracing…
What I was thinking about wouldn't sacrifice control at all, it would just allow multiple layers of mapping and decaling on a single object. The biggest risk is that it could potentially get very confusing if the GUI isn't done right. > Oh, I don't intend to stop 🙂 Just…
> Yes… I know how that can work. Problem is, you have to map the object in its entirety, or at least an area larger than the tile for this to work. In any case, you have to create the material and the mapping coordinates with the decal in mind.…
> Poor OS/2. I'll light a candle for it every August 24.
This thread raises questions I've been accruing. I know that SCSI drives work much better in multi-tasking situations, but if one has a decent IDE drive he doesn't want to get rid of, does it hurt to have the BOOT drive of the system be the IDE? Will you lose…
Ok.. slight misunderstanding of the terminology there. I had thought a "core component" was going to be a routine that YG has produced as part of the base product that everyone gets, and other components produced by others were still going to be considered "plug-ins", even though they worked in…
> True enough, especially if it's YG who offers it. It's not so much that I would see it as such great importance for it to be offered right ON the shipping date, but that it would be a quality product offered by YG, who knows their stuff about 3DS.…
#Why MAX name?
Message #186955
Heh. Then they'd call it 3D Studio RG3P! Maybe MAX stands for something like "Mighty Awesome Xperience" "May All Xpress" I probably would have called it something silly like "3D Studio Performer"…
Indeed, it's hard to offer any specific help without further detail, but I can say this much: Don't expect booleans to always work in 3DS. Often, not matter what you do to the mesh, they will not succeed. You're at least on the right track by making lofts more and…
I think Razor 2.0 may possibly be the better upgrade investment for most people not with an immediate need for large quantities of post-production rendering on the machine. The question is how many features that SHOULD have been in Razor 1.x and made it into Speed Razor actually made it…

Why MAX name?
Message #186943
> Hmm… being that "MAX" is usually short for "MAXimum", it leaves a problem for what to call the next release. If this is the maximum 3DS, what's beyond that? POSTmax? ULTRAmax? TANSCENDmax? 🙂 You have to admit, "3D Studio MAX 2.0" has a funny ring to it. MAX should…

#MAX Questions
Message #186940
It looks like MAX is going to set new standards in PC based animation! I have developed quite an interest in this product, I'm only sad we'll have to wait a few months to see it. Here are a few questions about the features of MAX I never got to…
Curved coffered lights
Message #186628
I had thought of that (actually, in this case, it's a floor I'm trying to project on, not the ceiling). However, trying to match the shape to the exact curve of where the coffer intersects the wall and hence projects to the floor would be quite difficult. You'd have to…
I missed the original message from which this thread began. Could you fill me in? I'm in Orlando now, but that's just a general region 🙂
