I will be getting into 3DS soon. I was wondering what packages are best for
generating architectural models for use with 3DS primarily, as opposed to full
architectural production drawings. My budget is small (I'm a student), so that
may be a problem. One that I am interested in is Facade by Eclipse, which
seems to fit the bill. I was just wondering what others might be out there.
This is probably no suprise to you but AutoCAD is the VERY common tool of
choice (no need for AME) if only for the reason that the majority of
architectural projects begin and evolve in that format. Its accuracy is
superb and additional support unequaled – both making up a little for its
lack of a good 3D-modeling front end.
As a student you do qualify for a hefty discount (I think it's about $500) so
don't let the list price scare you too much. Learning both 3DS and ACAD is a
powerful combination and one that will make you valuable to many firms.

p.s. do not even consider ACAD-LT since it lacks any real 3D ability.
Since I use AutoCAD now I may be prejudiced, but that would be my
program of choice. One can do almost anything in 3D with ACAD, which
I think makes it very useful for making models to use in 3DS. As an
example of using ACAD, I was able to to produce a model of the first
and second floors of the light court, and the elevator lobby (in very
high detail), of the Rookery (in Chicago) in about 30 hours. I would
say about 5-6 hours were "wasted" on mistakes, etc.

I am a practicing Architect who uses Acad r12 c2 for production, AME extension
for generating accurate 3d "Solids", 3D Studio for rendering and animation, and
Animator Pro for 2D rendering and map making. I have around 7 years
experience.
I would hold out for Acad. With a student discount you should be able to get
there. I would'nt go for anything less, as anything else will be less in the
3D area, and as I understand it that is you primary reason for researching a
graphics package. Unfortunately, 3D Studio also has a hafty price, but it is
the real thing for rendering models created by AME extension to ACAD.
But….if you at least get Acad r12 c2 with AME extension, you can start your
study of 3D model making, and at least use the limited rendering functions that
come with Acad. If you want texture, opacity, and reflection mapping, you will
have to save up for your 3D Studio.

I'm looking for something that runs IN ACAD. Not a full production package
like ADDCAD, but something inexpensive oriented to architectural modeling,
like Facade. I just wondered if there was anything to compare it to. Of
course, DataCAD would cost less than Facade alone, never mind ACAD. 😉
There's nothing on the market currently that compares directly with
Facade in terms of price/functionality. Facade is pretty nifty, and a
great bargain at it's modest price. For inexpensive, quick
architectural modelling with AutoCAD you can't do better…
There are other products from Softdesk, Ketiv and others that will do
what Facade does generally, but the 3D modelling features of these
packages are a part of much larger and more expensive, full 2D and 3D
applications.

What exactly does Facade do? How much does it cost? I am very
interested in modeling add-ins for AutoCad.
FACADE is a third-party add-in to AutoCAD that allows you to model a
3D structure directly from a 2D, single-line plan. It uses polyface
meshes to build walls, doors, and windows to your specifications.
It's only $189, which is a real bargain if you need its capabilities.
As opposed to using straight AutoCAD to draw in 3D, you could easily
recover this cost in a few hours of use.
BTW, AME for Acad will produce solid models (I am not completely
sure if this is done by polyface mesh, or 3D faces) from extruded 2D
or 3D polylines as well as many many other features. I am curious if
Facade requires that Acad be running with AME installed in order for
it to create mesh faces, or is Facade just using Acad's surface mesh
functions, to create it's volumes. Also, do the polymesh faces that
Facade has Acad produce compatable with 3D Studio (when I say
compatable I mean will 3D Studio make solid meshes from Facade's
geometry when you DXF from Acad)? Thanks for the info on this
interesting product.
Yes, I'm well aware of AME. There's no comparison or relationship
between AME and a product like FACADE, either in the kind of AutoCAD
entities they work with, or in ease-of-use and performance. For the
kind of easy and inexpensive architectural modeling I think was under
discussion here, FACADE would win, hands-down, as would most any
other AutoCAD architectural front-end that deals with 3D.
FACADE doesn't use AME at all. AME offers some potential for
architectural modeling that you won't get with a product like FACADE,
in terms of the Boolean operations that are possible with it. But
this is seldom a _major_ factor for modeling most aspects of
architecture, and there are some definite drawbacks to working with
AME solids in AutoCAD…
I've not used it myself for 3DS rendering, but I'm confident that the
meshes created by FACADE will work beautifully for rendering with
3DS.

Thanks for the info. I have found a few drawbacks in AME, like it being
cumbersome, and sometimes slow (grrr). For extruded floor plans buildings
(cardboard architecture), Facade or some other one probably is the best. But
there are some architects that go a bit further, and create forms and
structures that are above the norm ; that which we try to get published <g>.
These are designs that you do not see that oftern, and are kind of hard to
explain (although the licenced architects out there know what i'm talking
about). It is these designs that I am calling architecture, and it is that
architecture that I have found is best to be drawn completely accurately; then
the analysis of the 3D model is valid. I don't know, maybe Facade or some of
these other packeages do that; but all I hear is "easy" and "inexpensive".
Well, not all buidlings are easy, and maybe the student that started this
thread should evaluate what type of buildings he plans to put into the machine,
and then decide on the package.

I'm the student who inquired about Facade and alternatives. As you know, as a
thesis student, I have far more leeway to create a design which stretches CAD
capabilities. The tumult over AME vs. Facade is inappropriate IMHO, each has
their place. I started out using a solid modeler which I find to be faster and
easier to use than AME, Silverscreen from Schroff Development. Unfortuately,
although it is a capable CAD engine, there are no architectural applications.
I find that solids are more useful for massing studies than for detailed
drawings. While it might be a nice idea to completely model a building, the
overhead is too high. Unless you were developing a VR or other interactive
model environment, there is no need to get into redundant detail. My point is
that Facade is adequate to QUICKLY develop 80- 90% of architectural forms,
while a solid modeler can generate certain forms with more ease, but it would
bog down a drawing if used exclusively. I'm glad to hear about the proposed
enhancements to Facade, and since no one offered any viable alternatives, I
think I'll go with Facade.
I hope that you will also communicate wish list items back to us
(Eclipse). We are going to be very aggressive in upgrading Facade.
We're already at work on version 2.5.
Here are some of the current wish list items:
1. Command to automatically change the appearance of an existing wall.
2. Union two walls.
3. Curved walls with openings.
4. Tilted walls (other than 90-degrees to the xy-ground plane).
5. Curved and tensile roofs.
6. More user definable doors and windows.
7. Automatic beveling at end of wall.
We're anxiously looking for feedback and examples of work from users.

Actually, neither. Both polyface meshes and 3D faces are *surface modelling*
elements. AME produces solid modelling elements, which are an entirely
different kettle of code. To bring AME objects into 3DStudio, you have to
convert them to surface modelling objects by using the SOLMESH command. What
you bring into 3DS is no longer a solid model but a surface model.

Some quick answers.
Facade does not require AME. It uses its own built-in modeler so that the
entities it creates have intelligence. For example, a wall knows that a
window "belongs" to it. If you move the window, the wall adjusts acordingly.
Models created with Facade are render-ready. Facade was designed to work
with programs like 3D Studio. Just DXF your model into 3DS and render it.
That's how we produced our latest advertising image. The model took less
than 15 minutes to create in AutoCAD with Facade. We then imported it into
3DS and immediately rendered it. No sweat.

Thanks for the reply. Can Facade do boolean operations? Most of the private
homes I do (or want to do <g>) have many curves, etc., and the roof structure
can vary from compressive to tensile (depending on my mood!). This makes for
some very complex forms, and AME and Autocad's editing feature (osnap, etc.)
has been been very helpful, in 3D model analysis and presentation.
Thanks for the info, though. I am an expert architect, but not near the expert
with computers and manipulating 3D modelling / rendering software as some of
the folks in this thread. I should be careful about contributing my comments
<g>!

Not in the true sense of the word. When you create a window, door, or other
opening with Facade, it is indeed cut into the 3D wall, so in that respect
you could consider it a boolean subtract. The new version of Facade (2.0)
does not do much with curves in terms of walls and roof structure, but you
can create any shape opening in a wall, floor, or roof, so curved windows
and slab openings are a snap. We also don't currently handle curved roof
planes as a native operation. Of course, both of these can still be
implemented using other AutoCAD commands, but will also be dealt with in the
next release of Facade, especially the curved walls and roofs, which are
already high on the wish list for version 2.5.

"Architectural Power Tools" You may want to check out…I'm a dealer

In case you didn't notice, Architectural Power Tools and
Facade both originate out of Caricato Systems in Santa Rosa (Paul &
Cap Stocks). Paul pops up from time to time on the ACAD forum. APT
is marketed through Eclipse (David Cohn's company).

"Pro-Soft" Label on it….In fact they had Other products in that infamous
group remember any of the others?

A minor correction. Architectural Power Tools and Facade both "originated"

projects. Facade 2.0 was definitely a collaborative project with Eclipse.
The latest version of APT had our input as well. Both are market exclusively

A while back I promised you an update on my success at implementing
new computer technology into a firm filled with a computer illiterate
upper management. WE'RE GOING DIGITAL. On or about Feb. 1 I'll be
starting up the firm's first Image Lab to centralize a bunch of
computer graphics functions and to expand our capabilities in
animation and rendering. The help and insight of ASOFT forum members
made a huge impact in the ultimate success of my proposal. To sell
the idea of doing renderings and animations on the computer I had to
buy my own PC back in July for home and learn a bunch of programs
like Photo Styler, MicroGDS, Graphic Workshop, Laplink, WinCis, Vpic,
Aaplayhi and 3DS. I then created a bunch of renderings and
animations of logos, laboratories, office interiors, buildings, etc.
I gathered examples of other artists' work to show how the technology
is used by others and put on several dog and pony shows with a color
laptop to individual members of my firm's executive committee. I then
expanded the audience to as many members of the firm as I could get
interested. After seeing the potential of what could be done the
support grew. However,the politics of who works for who came close
to scuttling the whole deal (that's the corporate down side to large
firms). I do have a few more hurdles to get over but an agreement in
principle on what the Image Lab will provide is in place. I await an
approved start-up budget and then I will begin to shop around for
some new equipment. I'm not going to provide my services on my home
computer any longer! That's the brief report.

It always amazes me what has to done to wake some folks up to a little change

with you on the story. As I said in one of my earlier messages, I had
interviewed with Mr. Hillier himself back in '77 when I got my B-Arch. I
even went to school with his daughter at Syracuse. (She was working summers
for a smaller firm up the road toward New Brunswick…or was it the daughter
of that architect that was working for Hillier. I forget. But I can still
picture her. <G>)

rears it's ugly head I generally back off and let the organization work it out.
Most of the time it takes 6 months or more but then I don't have to "Take
Sides".

If you find a "Diplomatic" way of setteling this issue, I for one,
would be extreemly interested in how to facilitate these issues without getting
put "in the middle" <g>

The AME modeler runs IN ACAD. It is not an add on / replace menu
system like AddCadd, ketiv, etc. It runs IN Autocad WITHIN the
Acad.mnu file. I am not sure how much the add-on cost is, somewhere
around $250-$300 (?) range, and since it is written by Autodesk, it
is virtually bug-free, whereas some add-on menu systems can be
buggy. If you want true 3D-modeling with 3D files that can translate
directly to 3D Studio (in DXF format or, with the help of visual
link, 3DS mesh format), then AME is probably what you want;
everything else is just a light.

Not this year…or last…or anytime in recent memory… <g> You can
use AME to model architecture, if you insist, or straight AutoCAD for
that matter. But to say anything else is "just a light" is patently
absurd.

You are absolutley right, not everything written by Autodesk is bug free (Right
now I am pulling my hair out on some paper space features).
I am sure you can just use Acad to create models that can be imported into 3D
Studio; but I do know that it is alot easier to create solids with AME, and
import them into Studio using visual link. There is no conversion of faces or
anything which makes for a faster smoother transition.
For strictly creating 3D geometry without gads of interlinking lisp routines
that some 3rd party menu systems offer, it seems that in my experience AME is
the quickest, simplest, inexpensive way to get quick, accurate 3D geometry into
Studio, and into presentation.
My statement about "…just a light" was too extreme a statement, and I did
not mean to offend you <g>. I am talking about complex architectural models
rather than extruded floor plans.

Let me first apologize for my intemperate reply to your statement about
"anything else is just a light." I'm sure if I had taken a bit more time in
replying I could have come up with a much better way to say 'I think you're
full of it' than "patently absurd." <g>
One of the really nice things about AutoCAD is that it is exceptionally
programable and therefore there are usually several different ways to
accomplish similar things with it. If AME suits your working methodology, and
you believe it's the best way to model architecture, go for it. I just object
when this opinion is presented as 'my way is the only way', when, in fact, we
know it isn't even a _good_ way most of the time.
Now, in your other messages today, you are getting dangerously close to an even
higher level of arrogance when you imply your architecture is somehow a "true"
architecture, and those architects who use tools other than your chosen tool
are creating a lesser level of 'extruded, cardboard architecture'. the sake of
creating good architecture… I'm sure all us licensed architects out here know
_exactly_ what you are saying…
Let me say, politely, and after due consideration of how to say it nicely, and
with a _big_ smile: I think you're full of it, Joe. <bg>

There is a fine line between arrogance and confidence and the best cross it
all the time – I wouldn't worry too much. One has to stand up for what one
believes in – and that is always. Don't hold your philosophical rein TOO
tight. If that credo had alwasy been held we would be short many good tomes
of architectural dissertation; I mean where would Venturi be if he had never
taken his initial controversial stands and printed them (no comment on his
work, just his words and their influence<g>).

No need to rein in the expression of your philosophical underpinnings
regarding architecture. Your 'real architecture and CAD' thesis is
probably more appropriate in a place like the LEAP Forum's
Architecture section, though, than in a thread that started as a
question about a specific piece of software.
I wouldn't charecterize your "philosophy" of architecture as arrogant,
just the way (I perceived) that you expressed it. And as is always
the case, my perceptions, and responses to them, may have more to do
with me than with what you actually typed…
Your "philosophy" itself, that appears to revolve around the notion
that the highest value of architecture is achieved if it's
'published', seems more just misguided and immature, to me. I think
there's more to it than that…

AME is abut the furthest thing from an architectual model tool as one can
get! I would not consider recommending it to anyone unless I wanted their
productivity to suffer. For building models for ACAD only – maybe, a BIG
maybe. For export to 3DS – NEVER! It's cumbersome, expensive, creates HUGE
files, can be unpredictable and takes advantage of NO 3DS modeling shortcuts
that are available with DXF export. Unless you are trying to locate the
center of gravity for your building there is no practical use for AME & 3DS.

I've been following this thread and would be interested in any recommendation
you could give for a PC based modelling package that functions well with 3ds.
I'm used to using a workstation solid modeller (GDS) which works but it has its
limits. I also find the 3ds lofter to be quite painful. So, you got any ideas
for me? Would you endorse FACADE?

I just received a copy of the new FACADE, but do to deadlines I have not been
able to give it a fair look yet. From the manual, it is a modelor in the
traditional "cardboard" aproach that most architects are familar with – it is
not a solid modelor. Now for architectural modeling this is all that is
needed – your applications might require true solid modeling. What are you
modeling? What are your needs? – Phil
ps – The Shaper/Lofter works GREAT with DXF's and the lofted meshes will
align perfectly with the rest of your AutoCAD created model.
Sounds like my applications for modelling are similar to yours. I'm
an architect and have the need to model the small bits of hardware as
well as the large bits of midtown Manhattan. As I mentioned in a
previous note I'm using a solid modeller for creating most of my
geometry. The problem with this approach is that the editing
capabilities suck. Its often easier to recreate the piece than to
modify the existing one. 3ds shines in its editing capabilities.
What I miss in the 3ds shaper/lofter/editer is the ability to align
already create meshes by the center of a surface, by the midpoint of
an edge and frankly I didn't have any early success with moving a
mesh by a vertex and moving it to align with another mesh's vertex.
Give me some pointers on the Vertex snap if you will. I can't get it
to behave predictably. I don't use autocad yet at all but if you can
convince me its a great modelling tool I'll give it a shot. Also, I
have a decent site modeller on the workstation side but its output is
difficult though not impossible to port over to 3ds. I'd be
interested in any comments you might have on Vista Pro or other PC
site modelling software that creates files in a format friendly to
3ds.
I read your previous note about the image lab – congratulations! I
know all too well about technologically illiterate management <g>.
But you're not using AutoCAD? I trust you must have some CAD package
that reads/writes DXF. The biggest advantage for AutoCAD in the
architectural community is its overwhelming use – from consultants to
clients to vendors. Not having it on hand can cost a firm projects –
and it is a good modelor for simple shapes that need to be very
accurate (e.g. architecture!).
For an architect, the Shaper and Lofter are most powerful when they
use DXF shapes and paths. A Lofter DXF path insures that the mesh
will allign with the rest of your DXF-imported mesh perfectly. The
quick ability to loft gives many chances to experiment. For the
model-mesh itself I can only speak of AutoCAD for DXF export. You no
doubt have heard of Face Normal nightmares – don't worry, once you
know the nuances you will rarely need to flip normals in 3DS.
VistaPro – fascinating program, but its for terrain modeling/imaging
and not for traditional model building. It creates images or, if you
wish, VERY large DXF files.
Aliging entities in the 3DE – yeah, this is tough. Remember that the
Align command is aligning to the viewport's construction plane – it
can be useful but I would hardly call it an accurate tool. Vertex
snap – it's only availbale when you really don't need it <g>. If you
need to make perfect alignments I'm afraid you are forced to zoom to
the "invalid region" and make sure the vertices align (unless yu can
weld them and just increase your weld threshold). A trick for
centering objects on one another is to copy tracks in the keyframer.
All in all, your best bet at making highly accurate models is to do
it elsewhere (AutoCAD) and bring the model in. The models' origins
match and you will be able to junp between the two programs without
alignment problems fro as long as your project exists, changes, and
evolves.

It's me again. PMJI. If you have existing 2d site plans in Acad you
can turn the building perimeters into plines, extrude each building
to it's height and set an elevation if necessary, then use the
solidify command in AME to convert those to closed boxes for export
to 3DS. Not perfect but can save time in many cases.

For my money, the best combination is AutoCAD and Schreiber's QuickSurf
program. Takes any type of 3D data (straight from the newfangled surveying
equipment) or polylines or even 3d points and turns it into a surface with
variable density which can be taken over to 3DS.

I have to second on Quicksurf. Although I have very little experience with any
surfacing package, Quicksurf was used by Peter C. and I for a terrain
animation, and it was great.

One humble objection to that sweeping remark. Perhaps it relates specifically
to architectural modeling or to your realm of experience, but there may be
another side to the story relative to other types of modeling.
I've used AME many times to create complex mechanical objects that would have
been very difficult to create effectively with 3DS. I refer largely to the
ability to do many (I mean 10 or 20) booleans on a single object to create
complex beveling, cutouts, tapers, fillets, etc. Try more than about three
booleans with 3DS any you generally have big problems. In addition, the
superior drawing tools and aids in AutoCAD make precision modeling easier in
some instances. (Note: the 3DS interface wins the 3D visualization and editing
contest hands down, in my book!)
I sometimes use AME to build mechanical things from precision specifications,
and use the 3DS lofter to build more organic curved surfaces. A good example
might be building a precision gun model: use the 3DS lofter to build the
gunstock and use AME to build the internal mechanisms.
In addition, I've gotten AME generated DXF files from several of the
engineering groups from our corporation. These people have access to whatever
they need and use what is appropriate. They sometimes use AME.
Just for the record, it is cumbersome and makes huge files. The export to 3DS
thru DXF/entities/binary is relatively painless. Large intermediate files are
created but can be deleted right away. I found AME difficult to learn but not
difficult to use. Of course, I spent some time learning and customizing and
experimenting. Like most things in life, perhaps you get out of it what you
put into it.

If you haven't already heard about it, you should find a local Authorized
Mechanical Reseller and check out AutoCAD Designer. We have been demoing the
pre-release code (ship date arount 2/1/94) and it is HOT, HOT, HOT.
I modeled a bracket for a client today that included 5 major components, 3 (yes
3!) 2-axis compound fillets, curves, holes, etc. – produced a paperspace sheet
of 3 ortho views, 1 iso view and an enlarged detail view – put a mesh on the
object – took it across the network to my Studio machine – mapped it in chrome
– and had an image on the Targa – elapsed time, 35 Minutes for the whole
operation!!!!!! Remember, this is while I was demoing the software. Before I
started, the client estimated that it would have taken his draftsman 2 hours to
produce the 2D part of this alone.
For anyone that does mechanical parts it is killer! Kinda' like AME all grown
up!

An add-on like AME. It connects with AutoCAD R12c2-DOS (and ONLY c2) via an
ADS link with an authorization code like AME. It uses the ACIS solids core, so
it should be readily ported to ALL the UNIX platforms, and Windows support
should be down the road a bit.

The future of AME is as yet undecided. It doesn't make sense that AME would
continue with such a powerful product available. Regarding the upgrade, there
has been ALOT of preliminary chatter both pro and con, as soon as I see
something on letterhead I'll let you know.

Better than that, you can select an allowable variation between the model and
the face mesh. This variation can be specified to be as small as
001"!!!!!!!!! I wouldn't want to do one though, as the face mesh would be
astronomical in size.

In short, AutoCAD Designer is a "Feature Based, Parametrically Driven,
Bi-Directionally Associative Solid Modeler" (Whew, aren't you impressed! <BG>)
Here is the short of what that means…
-Feature Based
AutoCAD Designer works with the individual "components" of a solid as
intelligent features. Features always understand their relationship to
3D-space and TO OTHER FEATURES. This is key, because if one feature is
changed, all the adjoining features will update to reflect the changes
AUTOMATICALLY. For instance, if you had a part that was a flat object with an
attachment point on the end, when you lengthened the flat, the attachment would
change to reflect it!
-Parametrically Driven
In Designer, every feature is simply "sketched" in and then dimensionally
constrained. These constraints not only reflect the size and shape of the
feature, but the feature's relationship to other features. In AME, once an
object is "solidified" you are "stuck" with it. In Designer, you simply edit
the dimensions of the feature and have Designer update the model. Thus, that
feature (and any other connecting features!) will be updated. Remember, THE
DIMENSIONS DRIVE THE MODEL.
– Bi-Directionally Associative
This is the KILLER part of Designer. Visualization aside, most people will be
using Designer to produce two-dimensional drawings. In AME, you could only
produce "dumb" projections onto a UCS. In Designer, you have complete control
over how and what two dimensional drawings are required. Plus (and this is the
key) any time the model is updated, the drawings will AUTOMATICALLY reflect the
changes. Also, any time the "designer" dimensions of a 2-dimensional drawing
are updated, the MODEL and ALL OTHER 2-D VIEWS WILL UPDATE AUTOMATICALLY!!!
Gosh, I could go on forever, you need to see the product!!!!!!

Thanks for the excellent reply on the Designer. It sounds very useful. As much
as I like what I can do with AME, I equally dislike doing it.
I hope they offer it as an upgrade to AME. It is usually much easier for me to
find someone where I work to pay for an upgrade than a new product.
(I work for a large corporation, but it is run somewhat like hundreds of tiny
independent companies, each with their own small budgets. I usually work as
sort of an independent consultant within the company and generally have to con,
er., convince a particular group that a purchase will benefit them. Often, it
is easier to just buy the stuff myself, but $1500 is a little over my limit
today. <g>)
R12c2-DOS only? Oh no! I "upgraded" to the Windows AutoCAD for modeling with
3DS, since I could run both of them under Windows and transfer DXF files. This
way I didn't have to exit one application to start the other to make the next
piece. Now I'm running with two machines on a network and this is no longer
important. And now, DOS-only designer. Do you happen to know how much
Autodesk will charge to "take back" my Windows ACAD and return my DOS version?

"Standard" platform change fee is $250.00. BUT, with the delay in availability
of the ACIS core on the windows platform, I would venture a guess that there
will be some "dealing" going on!

You might want to try Karen Anderson with Nolte Sheehan (71172,2517). I know
she is Mechanical Authorized (remember, this will NOT be available from all
dealers). Or, if you don't mind dealing long distance……… <BG!>

My sweeping remark (which I'm glad garnered several responses) was
specifically aimed at the use of AME and Architectural models – it simply was
not designed for the purpose. It's akin to purchasing a Mack truck to pull a
toy wagon. Your uses for the product to produce Industrial/Component Design
elements is exactly what it was designed for and what it IS great for. When I
need to create an intricate door handle I use AME. But for architecture
(which is often thousands of simple forms) I find it cumbersome, time
consuming and overkill – now maybe if I was modeling a corinthean column <g>.
Maybe I'm too use to customized LISP and knowing the many modeling chortcuts
available with the DXF to 3DS conversion. AME tends to be fairly pat with few
customizing abilities – I guess that I'm a "little" prejudice against
anything in AutoCAD that I can not rip into the code and tweak to my likeing
and aplication needs.
Superior drawing tools and precision>> EXACTLY – this is 3DS's weakness and
ACAD can and does make up for it. For architectural work I usually do between
60%-98% of the actual modeling in AutoCAD rather than 3DS.
I guess I came a cross a "little" too strong <g>. Yes AME has it's rightful
place as a valuable modeling tool. One just needs to know the most
apropriate tool for the particular job/aplication at hand.

Actually, it depends on how you use AME. I use it exclusively to build
architectural models and find it very usefull. Instead of building the entire
project in one, big hard drive stuffing drawing (which I guess is the source of
your mammoth files), I think of AME as a kind of machine shop that I can use to
craft individual parts for the model, which I the assemble in 3DS.This works
fine and I have no complaints about the process, other than I wish 3DS would
allow me to use OSNAP like commands so I wouldn't have to use AutoCAD at all.
I'm not saying you have to recant and from now on do things in "the only true
way" <g>. I'm just saying that there's more than one way to skin a building and
people should use the way their most comfortable with while still being open to
other methods.

I'd be very interested in learning what architectural elements you create
that require or fully utilize the full-blown use of AME (no joke – I'm
sincerely interested and am always willing to learn). Granted, AME has some
great tools – but for architecture? I trust you are modeling some fairly
avant-garde work.
I agree with you completely about AutoCAD's snapping ability and accuracy –
that's why I do a considerable amount of modeling in it. I see how breaking
the model into components might lessen the AME overhead but there's always
the need to coordinate them at some point correct?

I have tended to use AME to create complex roof systems, moulding details which
require mitred corners, corner trim detail done with intersect to name a few.
However, I find myself doing much more in 3DS these days.

Where are you hiding out these days? Wait 'til you hear all my
messages on your answering machine <g>!
For even the most complicated miters you should give the good 'old
Lofter a try: Create the profile(s) and the room's/building's
perimeter in AutoCAD, export them to the Shaper and Lofter
respectively and there ya go – a perfect molding, cornice, wall
section, or what ever that wraps around/within the building – perfect
miters every time and just as accurate as AME since you created the
profile and path in AutoCAD (just a whole lot faster with a lot of
time remaining to try more variations and options).
Now Roof forms – those can be a time consuming. After looking at
FACADE a little closer today I would say that it holds a lot of
promise in this area as one of its features.
Why can't Autodesk make the ACAD tools available in 3DS? If you own
ACAD, the code is already on your machine. They ought to work
together. OLE2? maybe when 3dstudio makes it to windows.
Why isn't 3DS more like ACAD? >> that's one of the great un-answered
questions of the universe <g>. You have to remember that the two are
programing groups of different camps with very different priorities.
I don't think we want the core ACAD group coding 3DS (lest the
interface fall into that of ACAD) and the Yost's might bounce off the
walls at the other place. There definately seems to be a right-brain
left-brain division between the two groups <g>.
The two programs can work very well together and I think that
AutoVision is a step in the right direction (i.e. integrating 3DS
into AutoCAD and not the other way around). Once they finally get
AutoVision to translate (or AT LEAST respect and not discard) all of
the 3DS information the two worlds will finally comunicate.
Windows – it's already there as a DOS App. I don't think running 3DS
as a true WIN3.1 App is a very good idea. Now NT on the other
hand…………

Some architectural designs (especially the one I like to do), are not simple
little extruded boxes, they are sometimes rounded with intersecting vaults or
walls. It is much easier to use AME in doing these operations than anything
else. I misunderstood you in earlier messages, but at that time I thought you
were talking about real architecture rather than extruded floor plans.
(unfortunately in the commercial world, some architects are forced to create
simple little buildings, and these probably could be created by cardboards).
But buildings can be as or more complex than doorknobs; it depends on the
architect who designed it!
Sorry if some of my earlier messages were too strong; I thought when you said
architecture, you meant high style architecture, rather than extruded floor
plans. Ask any architect; There IS a differnece.

"REAL" architecture – ouuch!, ooooh!, ouch! Just because one doesn't put AIA
after one's name does not mean that one is not an architect <g> – our
chapter here is very poor and it's just too expensive to belong for only the
magazine.
Of course I create Architecture (both in mesh and concrete) and one can
create very intricate, delicate forms without solid modeling. Obviously this
is all a matter of choice and what works best for whomever – we'd probably
learn a lot from looking over eachother's shoulder for an afternoon. I've
created all the forms you spoke of (intersecting barrel vaults, groin vaults,
elliptical ceilings, fluted columns, etc) without solid modeling – modeling
the control points/arcs/plines and using them to generate AutoCAD meshes and
3DS lofts (these control entities can be used by repeated forms for numurous
tasks). When you combine custom LISP with basic AutoCAD you can do a lot of
quick modeling (granted you don't know how much it weighs but who really
cares <g>). Even if I am forced to do the perverbial decorated shed I usually
include some sophisticated form/detail somewhere if only to keep my sanity
and self-respect.
My analogy to cardboard was an analogy to how most architects build their
study (or finish) models – very few will carve into solid blocks of wood or
plastic – a little tough on the interiors <g>.
I agree with you on using AutoCAD – any of our given projects will use 80-98%
ACAD models and will always be kept current as a DWG. The key for using the
Lofter is to use DXF paths that you create and align in AutoCAD – say the
centerlines of walls and sections. This can make even the most complicated
form a snap – just did a surpentine 3-story wall section yesterday with the
wall section (mullions, drip edges, rounded details, etc.) created in AutoCAD
from the SD document and lofted along the curving centerlines in about 15
minutes.
Auto Link – it's dead (and was never very useful IMHO). AutoVision holds a
little more promise (although it discards a LOT of 3DS3 info).

Thanks for the reply! That is an interesting method that you use, adn it is
VERY interesting to see other fiewpoints in modelling.
I did not mean to sound arrogant about types of "Architecture". There are as
many types of architecture as there are creative minds, and mine is by no means
the only one. Also, even though I am licenced to practice Architecture, I know
of a lot of licenced architects who have no business coming up with artistic
ideas, while there are people who may not be as trained in structures and
systems, but who can create exciting ideas in architecture. It is a big world,
and the more variety the better! (violin background music slowly fading
away…..)
Conversing with all of you has broadened my views on modelling, and I think I
am going to do some research on some of the products suggested in this thread.

Ahhhh yes, we finally agree – and on the important items: the deffinition of
Architecture, that design ability is not inherent with a license (or a
degree FTM), that architectural (and modeling) aproach variety is essential,
and that FLW did some pretty good door handles in his day too <g>.

Have you tried visual link? It takes care of everything you just remarked
about (I think). Your right though, AME is cumbersome and probably wasteful.
Do you just create models right in Studio then? As an architect, we use Acad
right from the front end, so it is easy for me to get files from whoever did
the plan, and quickly extrude it into a building, leaving openings for windows
etc.. For simple buildings like these (I usually dont even refer to these as
architecture), Facade (or equal) may be the answer. But what if the architect
has the ability to create something more; real architecture?
For me anyway, going this route is much faster than creating the geometry from
scratch in 3DS. But to each there own. On some of the homes I design at home,
they can get very complex (curved surfaces, etc); perhaps something like Facade
is better for simple extruded floor plans, but for more artistic shapes that we
architects strive to achieve, maybe AME is not so bad a modeller. This is just
my opinion 🙂

p.s. Most architects use the cardboard approach to creating buildings; but
there are a lot of us who creat buildings as solids; they are solids that are
merely hollowed out and inhabited by people. When you use this approach and
AME, you can come up with some pretty interesting designs. But using a
cardboard approach can greatly inhabit the creative process, because of its
great limitations. BUT, 95% of the buildings you see are the cardboard type;
it is very rare that one of the "real" designs can actually get built. So I do
understand you rational.

Oh yeah, I guess I should have mentioned that the "door handle" I was
refering to was influenced by a Hector Guimard design – not your standard
"door knob" by any stretch of the imagination. As an architect you should
know that door handles can be some of the most intricate forms on a building
and the most challenging to design – Aalto & Holein certainly did and do.

As for Facade and 3D Studio, models created using Facade are render-ready.
Just bring the model into 3D Studio and have at it. That's how our current
advertising image was made. 15 minutes with Facade and then a minute or so
to render in 3DS.

depends on each renderer's needs. Some buildings are square; mine rarely are.
If Facade works for the extruded floor plan architect, then that is what he
