Gray Scale at 600 DPI Message #272383
From: allan phillips HP Peripherals Forum · LaserJet 4/5 May 16, 1995 10:55 AM
In PCL mode the shading patterns (% black) that the laserjet 4 at 600 DPI generates is too coarse. It is clearly not 600 DPI. I am generating PCL code directly and I have learned that I must define the shading pattern (user-defined patterns). However. I wonder if someone has…

Standby Mode on 4MP Message #272362
From: Andrew Biss HP Peripherals Forum · LaserJet 4/5 May 16, 1995 9:50 AM
Hi, I am using a HP Laserjet 4MP with WFWG 3.11 and OS2 Warp without any problems. My question relates to the Energy Star power-saving mode of the printer. According to the manual the printer reduces power consumption when switching to standby mode. How do you know if the printer…

#LJ4L Sound Driver Message #272349
From: William F. Eng HP Peripherals Forum · LaserJet 4/5 May 16, 1995 9:13 AM
The HP LJ 4L worked fine when I first got it. Then I loaded some screen savers, one with sound, but since I don't have a sound card or speakers, other than the little computer speaker, it didn't sound too good. That's when the problem with the sound driver that…
HP4+/Dataprod. Driver Message #272335
From: Kim Kingscott HP Peripherals Forum · LaserJet 4/5 May 16, 1995 9:03 AM
We just installed an HP 4 Plus printer. The only problem we are having, is that is seems to conflict with a currently installed DataProducts LZR 1580 printer. In WordPerfect, for instance, as soon as we try to select a new printer, we get an error message pointing to our…

WAN printing Message #272329
We are working on a Novell 4.1 network with 3 servers at different locations connected via 56k lines and routers. Jet Direct was used to set up the printers on each of the servers. One OS2 client acts as a print server to route print jobs from the AS400 to…
PostScript FAQ file? Message #272326
I'm looking for a file that contains the explanation to the question: why would I need a PostScript SIMM in my HP LJ 4 Plus, if I already use ATM and Type 1 fonts in my work? What's the advantage that would justifify the additional investment in SIMMs and RAM?…
MSDLC hangs WFW Message #272324
Any reason for the HP Network PRinting Monitor utility isntallation to hang WFW 3.11. Had good working WFW setup, with SMC Elite network card. Did the Monitor install OK, then added the new MSDLC protocol fom the distribution diskette via Windows setup icon. On re-starting system, NET INTIALISE came up…

#272179 #HP4 driver Message #272317
v1.50 is essentially the 1.35 driver with extensions for the LJ 4V. Unless you're using the 4V it shouldn't make a difference. We no longer have 1.35 on-line, so you'd need to talk to HP Distribution at 303-339-7009
#272267 #Printer/Cable errors Message #272316
What version of the Status Monitor (WIndows Printing System) are you using? Several poeple have said that v1.35 clears up problems caused by earlier versions. You can get it from HP Distribution by calling 303-339-7009

Can you please tell when the NDS firmware update will available for the Jetdirect EX (J2382B). I have purchased a flash SIMM for the EX, but I am disappointed that there is no firmware upgrade available.

Some networks have the option to use a banner or separator page which separates all of the print jobs. You have the possibility to choose whether you want to have such a banner or not. It could be controlled by your driver ! Go MAIN – CONTROL PANEL – PRINTER…

Dave: >>I usually use whatever office supply standard weight laser/copier paper is currently available at the best case price. We are in an area of low to VERY low humidity and never had a curl problem on the LJ4, don't have a 4P so can't comment on it.

I deliberately did not install the driver that came with the printer and yes, Windows is using its generic driver. Thanks for your quick reply. Regards, Neil
Hi, I'm experiencing big problems printing graphics with my HP-LaserJet 4+ over a NW3.11 Network using Windows. I've installed the drivers delivered with the printer on every PC. I've configured the driver for Raster graphics and the printer is installed directly on the server (Standard PServer). The Graphics are printed…
I am using HP Printing System (LJ-4:s) version 1.35 with Windows95. Unfortunately the PS does not co-operate too well with the operating system. More precisely the status information applet conflicts with the OS. Is there a Win95 version (pre-release/beta-test/Win NT etc.) of LJ Printing System available at this time and…

Try downloading Service Pack 2 (8 disks!) for NT3.5 from Microsoft, (GO FTP, and then FTP.MICROSOFT.COM) it solves the problem! I have the sam configuration, and the new improved printer driver that comes with SP2 fixed this. Good Luck! Tamas
#272200 #1200 DPI on LJ4 ? Message #272281
From: George HP Peripherals Forum · LaserJet 4/5 May 16, 1995 2:07 AM
Jack, I thought the highest DPI for LJII's and III's with WinPrint from LaserMaster was 800 DPI and to get 1200 DPI you had to have a LJ4? You're getting 1200 DPI with a LJII? How long have you had this setup? George
From: haam HP Peripherals Forum · JetDirect & Network May 16, 1995 1:30 AM
Is there a way to print to a JetDirect printer from NT 3.5 without using DLC? It is my understanding that DLC is not routable and the JetDirect printer, an HP4SIMX, is on another network segment on the other side of a CISCO router. Since HP has a lpd driver…

#271954 #Printer/Cable errors Message #272267
I am having the same Printer Status window problem intermittently. I have also gone through changing cables, LPT ports etc. I now suspect the PC interrogation speed is too fast for the printer to respond, which I think means HP still has a driver problem. I can't believe that so…
JetDirect & Windows NT Message #272225
Hi Andy, Thanks for the heads-up on the NT printer issue. I had seen the 255 figure in the book, but wondered what the practical limit was and if there was any advantage to DLC vs TCPIP. I did not know that the DLC was not routable so that will…

I get 1200X1200 out of a Laserjet II, so, yes, it's possible. I use the LaserMaster Truetech boards. LM is the best one to check on this. Laserpix is another you might see advertised. Its output is stunning but its printer drivers are totally proprietary and its board is expensive;…
From: Jack L. Chalker HP Peripherals Forum · LaserJet 4/5 May 15, 1995 10:30 PM
Well, considering it's a black and white printer I'm not too sure why this is a big problem, but if it won't print colors as grays then it's the WIN95 driver. Since WIN95 doesn't have a 5MP driver it's using the generic Postscript one, most likely, or you are using…
#271952 HP4 – Works driver Message #272198
From: Jack L. Chalker HP Peripherals Forum · LaserJet 4/5 May 15, 1995 10:30 PM
Sorry; DOS is pretty dumb and doesn't use drivers at all. It expects each application to specifically support each piece of hardware. If there is no LJ4 driver in Works, only Microsoft can give you one. If you can tolerate 300 dpi rather than 600, though, the LJ3 driver will…

Metric sized sheets are supported by the drivers of all HP laser printers. Remember, A4 is the standard in Europe, Canada, etc. as well.

That's why they still sell continuous feed rolls for dot matrix check printing, I'm afraid. You will lose checks now and again with laser checks no matter what.
#271996 4P or 5P ? Message #272195
From: Jack L. Chalker HP Peripherals Forum · LaserJet 4/5 May 15, 1995 10:30 PM
The best reason for buying a 5P over a 4P is that the 4P has been discontinued.
