Water IPAS
Message #185837
Fred, C++ is only required for development. There is an IPAS on YG's #2 disk called water.sxp which may work for you. It produces very realistic water but the controls aren't the easiest to work with. I don't know of any other water IPAS' available currently. Good luck. DM
Ken, The new 3DS – 3DS MAX will be for WIndows NT only. You can contact Bob Bennet at Autodesk about the Beta team, but I'm pretty sure that's all been finalized. DM
Doug, Well Nik is _kinda_ right. The displaying of highlights for faces etc., is totally dependent on the Vibrant driver you're using. On many cards working in 24 bit works just fine. On some you have to use 256 colors. Unfortunately, it seems you have to work in 256 -…
Richard, The RHPADI drives is for AutoCAD not 3DS. Your best bet is to render to a still and then print from Corel Draw or something else. The 650c comes with great Windows drivers. DM
Paul, When getting memory protection faults it's best to strip your Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files to the bare minimum needed to start the computer. The bare minimum is always different but a good starting spot is: Config.sys: DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS FILES=50 BUFFERS=30 Autoexec.bat Your path statements A mouse driver Of course you…
Jeanette, Try using the VESA drivers in the Vibrant setup. You should be able to get truecolor, it will just be slow. At least this should help until they update the drivers. Also, the latest version is 1.0.7 I believe. It's available in the libraries. DM
Tom, It sounds like you may not have any sky _geometry_. Try putting a big hemisphere around your scene and see if that helps. Don't forget to flip the surface normals of the object. Hope it helps. DM
Forrest, The RHPADI driver is for AutoCAD not 3DS. It won't work. Instead install the Windows drivers that should've also come with the plotter and print from any WIndows app. Corel Draw works well and the newest version is said to be able to handle any size output. It used…
Wow Peter, sounds like very interesting work. Have you checked into the feasibility of having a place like Viewpoint do the modeling? It would probably be costly but heck you're a surgeon! I believe, I'd use Corel also for tracing. The shaper doesn't cut it for such a task as…
I've wanted to be able to do that for camera ranges for a long time. It would make for interesting use of Fog and Distance cueing. I also wanted to be able to lock the camera range so that once locked you could move the camer independent of it. DM
Martin, Great stuff! Thank you. Virtuosity looks great from the previews. I have a feeling it will do well. I've been looking for the shot you did in the previews but haven't seen it yet. They must save all the best stuff for the theater. DM
Daniel, Did you ever get a reply to your post about fuzzy objects? I'd suggest that it's simply your lighting. Try turning down your lights or making your materials have smaller specular highlight. DM
Eric, Just a quick one: In 3DS if you save Projects and not just files all of your lofter and shaper stuff will stay intact. These are the ones with the PRJ extension instead of the .3DS extension. If you have a couple complicated lofts in a particular project you…
Joe, Well, I'd bet it's the way you're creating your alpha. In Pshop go to channels and verify you have a #4 and that it's a black and white image. Turn the #4 channel on and you should see a background color appear. You'll also see how the alpha is…
Hey, count me in for someone who has never gotten an invite either. I feel sad. DM
Hey Alec, PMJI on this one but I had the exact same problem a few weeks ago. Although changing the Shadow Bias Absolute didn't help. I never did actually figure it out. The animation was of a cow walking out onto a stage and then the curtains opening. There was…
Andrew, I'd verify that you indeed have the CL 5429 chip just to be sure. Although, you can usually trust Vibrant. If the VESA drivers don't work for you, you might just want to get a different video card. I've been real happy with the Stealth series, although the newest…
Brandon, I haven't actually tried this yet but your problem prompted the idea. Because VP has the capabilities of calling external programs it should be feasible to create a batch file that would copy the rendered images from the hard drive to the PAR but leave the alphas on your…

Skin Question
Message #183127
Peter, There is no skin modeler for 3DS that will work with dissimilar vertex counts but that doesn't mean there isn't one. I'm not sure as far as other packages go though. Maybe someone else will jump in and let you know. What are you trying to do anyway? It…
Fernando, Yes, Imagine nursery is a good product for making trees and bushes. So is Yost Groups Disk #5 – Silicon Gardern. The trees and shrubs in YG's are more optimized and use for general landscaping purposes. If you need lots of detail then Schreibers Imagine Nursery would be better…
There is no ADI driver for an Epson stylus. The easiest way to print images is to render them and then print them from something like Photoshop or something. There isa program called Renderprint from Insight technologies (sorry no #) that you could try. That's about it. I think most…
Dave, Thanks much dude! That was exactly what I needed. Hit me like a brick once I did it the right way. So easy… Now, I've got another for ya. Can I get the speed of a cycle to change. For instance, if I wanted one stream to be faster…
Mauricio, In addition to what Robert told you you should be aware that if you're going to an actual printing shop that the LPI they give you (150 line screen) will need to be rendered at about twice that (300 dpi). So, if you want to print a 5×4 image…
Michael, Got your ground problem solved? What do you do the ground object in? If not 3DS then have you checked to make sure it's not flipped normals or something instead of a clipping problem. If you scaled up your scene 1000% then it's most likely not a clipping thing.…
Mike, One thing about Razor Pro though is it's inability to generate Quick Time movies. This in itself is worth getting Premiere to some people. I've got the Qtime IXP and it works great but being able to deal with it all from within windows is much nicer. I've got…
James, The shimmering areas your referring to are the result of dithering. As you've noticed. This will happen anytime you use dithering with a flc. Especially apparent in gradients. It happens because each image is treated indepently and dithered differently. You just need to not dither. No bug…. DM
Aaron, 3DS' Z-buffer ir just that – a Z-buffer, or depth buffer. It is in fact 3D. You can turn on Z-buffering in your 3DS.set file, as you already must be aware of if you're using LenZFX. I don't understand your problem. LenZFX itself still has some prolems. Especially if…
Barb, I would doubt the two have the same palettes. They should not flash if they do. Also, because you're in Windows you need to make sure that you're using an actual "windows" palette. For a standard 256 color palette the first 10 and last 10 entries need to be…
Greg, Do you need a ton of detail in your ship? I assume so if you're trying to boolean on geometry. If you can live with it, it's much easier to just stick boxes, etc. in your hull and then attach them instead of booleaning them. You can also subdivide…
#Apro Color Cycling
Message #181409
I need some help with color cycling in Animator Pro. I'm doing a large projects that has a bunch of color cycling showing flow through a valve. The problem is that the direction and/or speed of the color cycling change each time I put down a path. I've got 31…
Chris, Did you ever get a reply to your gold meadllion problem? It didn't look like it. I really hope you got it figured out, and it turned out for you. If you're still looking for help, give a hollar. DM
Aaron, Your problem has nothing to do with LenZFX. It's a clipping problem. If faces are disappearing then you need to either scale your entire scene up or don't get the camera closer than what the clipping plane is set at. Also, it's always better to increase the scale of…
So you do actually reply to _some_ messages. I'm still wondering about the LenZFX problem I posted 3 days ago…. On another note why is it that LenZFX will page to disk pretty much all the time? I've had instances where it says I've use only 5Mb of 32Mb but…
Doug, John is right about the chipset. The Vibrant drivers don't yet support the 968 chip – that's the one on the stealth "video" card. If you can exchange the card for a regular Stealth 64 VRAM with the 964 chip and it will work fine at any color depth…
LenZFX Hue Bug
Message #179184
David, I need some help with LenZFX. I'm using starlite and keying off of whole image with hue. The hue is set at 78 (green) with a variance of 5. The problem is that it's hiliting other areas of my image that are definately not green. I've even tested this…
Daniel, I see you never got an answer to your post. Well, you're in the right place. Post questions to ALL in this forum and anyone will answer your questions. DM
Don, Well, since I'm going to be getting there Sunday night I don't think it will work out. Besides, since 30,000+ people will be attending I don't think just popping in and finding a room is going to be an easy accomplishment. I'm going to go ahead and try to…
Don, You mean Thursday the 3rd? I will be there Sunday the 6th sometime… I'm driving from Milwaukee. Can't afford air fare. I'm planning on leaving probably on Wednesday the 9th to return home. Sound ok? Do you already have a room? DM
Michael, You should ask your question in the AutoCAD forum. GO ACAD. DM
Jerome, Here's the file info that DonL mentioned to you about. Take a look at it. It's worked for me in the past. [71673,3612] Don Landis Lib: 6 PAR2RO. Text, Bytes: 4412, Count: 336, 19-Jan-95 Title : Rotoscoping with the PAR Keywords: ROTOSCOPE PAR This is a text file describing…
Don, You still looking for a roomate? Or two? Give me a hollar if you are. DM
Angelo, I'm using Central Point Backup for Windows with an Archive Python 4Gb DAT drive with no problems. PAR directly to tape and back. Very fast and easy to use. CP backup by itself is pretty inexpensive also. DM
Mirage IPAS will do exactly what you want. You can order it from Digimation at 1-800-854-4496 DM
Sounds very challenging! But great fun too. How long is the head shot? How did you end up working with the camera matching – every frame or what? I'm sure R5 is going to make this kind of work easier. Can't wait to see it though, sounds totally cool. As…
Good one! Made me smile. I see you moved it though. Thanks. I would have done it myself but I'm still in practice mode, so Anne might slap my hand. I'm still trying to come to better terms on what to do with your projector light trick. I'm finally starting…
Alan, Can we bring a guest to the party. I'm trying to get my brother to come with me to Siggraph and it'd be great if he could come to the party also. Thanks. DM
Alan, PMJI, but it sounds like you've got your renderer configured to output 24 bit. – No banding or marbling as you called it in the output images. When saving to disk you're most likely outputting to a .flc or .gif or something, which are 8 bit formats. In these…
>> can you use the refraction mapping plug-in (IPAS) with bones? Ooohh, sounds like you've got a cool idea. Could do some pretty wild stuff eh? How's things at Metrolight? Are you going to the party? DM

Message #176764
Hi Sanford, I doubt you'll be seeing anything from me on the reel this year. I did send in a few and I'm hoping but I'm not counting on it. No real cool IPAS stuff anyways. Next year. This year I sent in stuff from my first demo reel, which…
Byte 3D Articles eh? Take this over to Take 5 ok. DM
