I have 32MB of ram. This is sufficient for 80% of the stuff i do.The problem on the other 20% is not so much in rendering animations, because although paging to disk is slower, the same swap file is used so frame times remain constant. For example a scene that requires…
Hello Cal Thanks for your reply. I have access to a film scanner so thats not a problem. From their ad I understand that reference points must be made on the images. Is this a matter of a few points or are many points required? I guess Im trying to…
I know what you mean, Ive had Macaddicts tell me the work I was showing them couldnt be done on a pc. Dont get me wrong, some of my best friends own Macs. Ed
Hi Doug I saw your message—-!4 times! Ed
Hello Frank 8MB Ram may be the minimum needed but I would venture to say that no serious 3ds user would be happy with that ammount. Please note that when your scenes require more than this much ram and page to disk you will slow down considerably and have to…
Bridge Tool Kit Softbridge, Inc 125 CambridgePark Dr Cambridge, Ma 02140 617 5762257 800 9559190 I use it to automate just about any process in Windows. The latest version, 3.1 can send commands to Dos programs. Its a macro builder that can easily deal with sequential files. Ive used it…
Thanks for the extensive explaination. Since I dont do Amiga I will experiment with Optimize. Ed
I was thinking about the way that any "our scale" attempt to get enough data points to, for example, predict the weather would inevitably change the data collected if only slightly, in the same manner that putting a themometer in a glass of water will change the temp of the…
Hello Tim I do some of my modeling in the sculpture module of Playmation. Can you elaborate on the above? If you feel its a trade secret Ill understand. Ed
Thanks, for the Painter review. Im working on using Painter as a cheap Penello substitute. Ed
PMFJI < If we had all the data required to predict the size and shape of the cloud we could predict it.> Dosnt the Hiesenburg Principle state that in the process of collecting all the data, the data is changed? Ed (in over my head but interested) Harvey
Photomodeler
Message #149995
Has anyone tried Eos Photomodeler? If so: Does it work? Is it worth it? Any particular problems or concerns? Thanks, Ed

Model Contest!
Message #149878
< I will include my new process 3D scanning and import into 3D Studio models (have been working 3 years on this> Id like to hear more about your new process! Ed
Good luck on your approach to Autodesk. I hope they will listen. Ed
Ive been batch processing images through windows and dos programs with Softbridge's Bridge Tools program. Its saved me probably thousands of hours of work. The only problem is that it costs about $400-500. Im sure your solution will be cheaper! (G)> Ed
Hello Aaron I thought that a very good idea that went by in this conversation was the notion of a single lock that could work for 3DS and IPAS routines. I made a wish and Jonas replied that ( if I understood him correctly ) that this could be done…
Alvaro I have gotten good texture results by actually scanning flat rocks and using the results as a clone source. With some extra work you can make any texture you scan seamlessly tilable. You have to be careful not to scratch the glass on your scanner. On the network, you…
#lock wish
Message #149619
Hello Is it appropriate to enter a hardware wish? An idea which went by in the continuing discussion on HW locks was for a serialized lock that could work for 3DS and IPAS routines. Even though this would obviously require a costly change over initially it would make both developers…
Alvaro heres a couple of possibilities for exploration. find some pictures of paint on cave walls or rough textured paint surfaces. They could even be in different colors than you want and then hue adjusted. Using Photoshop, Photostyler, Painter etc. use these scanned images as clone sources for painting on…
PMJI I understand that the problem of piracy leads developers to use dongles. As an artist Im a great believer in intellectual property. However, the physical problem of dongles cannot be ignored by those of us who have 6 or 7 of them. I think Schreibers soft ware lock system…
Pmfji I couldnt agree with you more on the dongle issue. Dongles are a big factor in my decision to hold off on Penello and LensFX. Ed
Thanks, bump mapping makes sense. Ed
#bones with smooth
Message #147666
I just got bones and Im having fun playing with it . Smooth is a nice suprise thats very helpful in modeling. I havnt used Lightwave but It sounds like Smooth might approximate metaform. Anyway good work! Ed
Yes, thanks.
Thanks. Next time I will check the manual more closely before making a wish. Ed
Penello Bug?
Message #146641
Hello Ive been thinking about getting Penello so Ive been working with the demo . I ran across what looks like a significant problem, at least for the kind of work I would do. The preview shoes vertical and sometimes horizontal lines across the image. Heres one of the setups…
Penello
Message #146640
John, I enjoyed your article in CGW on Penello. Ive been working with the demo, trying to decide whether to get it. I could understand all the images in the article except the one to the far right with what looked like bumps on a map. How did you achieve…

interruptable redraws. This is a very convenient feature of Hash products, redraw is stopped for any other command.
Please send entry form to: Edward Harvey 1598 Calle Primera Lompoc, CA 93436 Thanks
Thanks for the info. Ed
Thanks, any examples will be greatly appreciated. Ed
The examples (mercury blobs and the cartoon guy) are impressive but limited, especially as examples of more real world type stuff. The ad illustration of the Egyptian monument was a big selling point for me. Would it be possible to upload that project or a portion of it as a…
PMJI I have found Bridge Tools from Softbridge to be incredibly useful for automating all kinds of tasks involving large numbers of numbered files. Renaming files as in your example would be easy with this program as well as all kinds of other things.
Yes
Javiar Im enjoying version 1. However I like to use bump maps so it would be useful to find some alternative to the present material limitation in this area. Maybe MSHADE.SXP could fit in any of the slots since they are seldom all in use. Another thing, if a model…
Hi Aaron " with the camera view probably being closer to reality since it is a machine and therefore objective." Here I have to really disagree. We are the percievers, not the cameras or any other instruments that we make. Beyond the obvious lack of stereo vision in all but…
< what we'd have is a reflection that is in perfect focus (since AD is our focal range) superimposed upon a surface which is out of focus (since AB is not our focal range). I'm trying to imagine how this would look but I'm absolutely certain that it's nothing I've…
Thanks, Im pretty sure Im going to get it.
Im very impressed with rm02. How long did it take to render on what kind of processor with what use of memory? I understand that this scene has lots of render intensive tasks so that details about it wouldnt enable predictions about other scenes, but it would help my purchase…
Ah ha ha ha ha sorry, Im sure youll get many replies on features, ease of use etc. You might compare whats going on around here to the ambiance in the Topas forum.
The mic is analog so it wont work in the digital port. Next to the digital ports is the optical in/stereo in port. I run my mic into a mixer (Makie micro series 1202- inexpensive but solid ) and modulate the gain for the best signal then out to the…
James I use a K2000s for sound effects, music and even sampling short dialogue for animations. Ed
Im very interested in refraction mapping. Perhaps you could upload some examples when its working. How about a glass half full of water? or is it half empty?
This is a really good question or wish. The ability to do cycles would be a great help.
If I can end up with the black areas of the resulting Penello layer transparent ( my understanding of your explaination of NONE ) then I can do what I want. Thanks form the info. Ed
Penello alpha
Message #139575
Hello Im working with the Penello demo, trying to decide if I want it. Ive pretty much answered the questions I had by observing the previews, except for how alpha works, which I assume can only be observed with the fully operational software. I want to layer V.P. queue entries…
