Re: patch modeler soon Is that for Release 4 only, or will R3 run it as well? Thanks in advance, Garu
Hello Angela No worries about jumping in, we need as many people as we can get huddled around the VRML campfire out here on the frontier! I've been cruising around the net downloading misc. browsers and trying them out, but real life keeps getting in the way, especially recently. I…
Hi there, thanks for jumping in! I downloaded VRML.ZIP and installed the IPAS, it works great! Plug-ins win again… I'm trying to go cheap on VRML and save up for MAX, so solutions like VRML.PXP are just the ticket for me right now… Regards, Gary
Hi Kerwin, The site with the most comprehensive list of VRML sites that I've found is: http://www.paperinc.com/architec.html This page has a lot of interesting links that will take you quite a while to check out. I haven't really found a viewer that I'm happy with yet, altho' I'm still fooling…
Hi there, I've been surfing around looking for VRML software. Autodesk has already made the VRML.PXP available at their www site, calling it the "3D Studio R4 to VRML 1.0 converter", and it works quite well (as in simple and easy), and the files it produces are actually viewable in…
3D Desing Article
Message #194962
re: 3D Design magazine Thanks, I'll give them a call. The cross-platform magazines are usually quite interesting, I find. Regards, Gary
pardon my jumping in, I'm not familiar with a magazine called 3D Design. Could you possibly send me a bit of contact infor for it? Thanks in advance, Gary
try .microngreen. instead, noting additional n in the name…. just passing through
The MacAddicts were quite quiet until the Power Mac came out, now they're getting noisy again (as they each save up the bucks to buy into it, maybe). If the platform is so good, why does so much Mac advertising concentrate on "theoretically" how BAD the competition is? i.e. their…
What is sound of one-sided mesh clapping?
This is fairly typical with AutoCAD files, it usually means the surface normals of the missing materials are facing the wrong way. If you FORCE 2-SIDED when rendering and the missing faces show up, the normals are the problem. Either flip the normals in 3DS, or re-do them in ACAD.…
A dedicated thief will find the time and the opportunity to get into the case, not much more difficult than stealing the dongle (blasted things…). I take mine home with me, that way the only problem is my memory…and I don't mean RAM!
When you're about to render, go to render/configure, and either click on one of the resolution boxes in that screen (if one of them is the resolution you desire), or enter the resolution in the two boxes for custom resolutions, which can be up to 9,999 x 9,999 pixesl (apparently).…
You could try DXF'ing a large file out in pieces, if you wanted. Also, you can "merge" (create/object/join) entities in 3DS prior to any boolean operations, I've found that this actually works better than doing a series of boolean operations…
We get our projects surveyed in AutoCAD with 3D data points. I then connect the dots with polylines on contour lines, and mesh between these lines in ACAD. In plan view these meshes can be stretched to match land features such as roads. Export to 3DS, map, and you're off.
thanks for the reply. Yes, a few people around here aren't happy with the way they do business. I wouldn't have downloaded if the files were listed as being from Schreiber, but they're shown as being placed here by Nixon, and there are some people who DO upload working IPAS…
Hi there from Vancouver, B.C…. I got the book for Christmas, so… ISBN number is 1 -56205-303-5 Published by New Riders Publishing Cost here is about $55.00 to $70.00 Canadian dollar The book comes with a CD-ROM disk which includes more or less the following: 200 Megabytes of texture maps,…
convertable demos
Message #145809
Scot… If you browse your files in the IPAS library, you will find no reference to "demos" in either the keyword section or the descriptive text section. yvt, Gary nrn
convertable demos
Message #145657
Hi there… could you please tell the people at Schreiber to indicate that all the IPAS routines they are uploading are actually demo routines which are crippled, and not fully functioning. I'm quite pissed off about this, having wasted a bunch of time and money downloading them, only to find…
convertable demos
Message #145656
There are a lot of IPAS routines appearing on the forum from Schreiber. They do not have the grace to indicate that these are crippled demo versions. Please be aware of this if you want to download them, they are pretty useless unless you want to send them money.
Try Library #1 (IPAS Usage)
Hi there.. I have a copy of the program (official copy, manuals etc) which I could sell to you. What's it worth to ya? I'm in Vancouver, Canada, would probably have to mail or Fedex it to you. Send me a private e-mail @ 71175,2104 if you're interested. Regards, Gary
If you want to do something that's free, try this (I use it all the time). Assuming you have a polyline for each contour line, and each polyline is up in space at the proper elevation in AutoCAD space (i.e. 0', 5', 10', etc.). Run the 3D Surfaces command, use…
Have you tried different settings of the "smoothing angle" when you import your data?
Yes, I am. In fact, it was a Release 3 scene that first caused me trouble, and I tried for some time to get it to work. Possibly I wasn't using the ray-traced option. I'll go back to the drawing board for a while. Thanks for the tip…
#Transp't Object Shadows?
Message #125562
Does anyone know if it is possible to have a semi-transparent object, say 80% transparent, cast a shadow that is appropriately reduced as well. I'm trying to do a glass canopy that will cast some shadow, but not the solid black kind. I don't want to set up more lights…
Re: mouse speed setting of 1. Now there's a wish list item: faster mouse speed. Even 1 seems likes walking in fudge. (for example, in AutoCAD I set my mouse speed for 150, 150, with a threshold of 0, i.e. across the screen in about 1 inch of actual travel.…
Thanks Glenn, nice to see you on-line…
Yes, the way they said that "for imagery requiring high-res work" they use SGI, and 3DS for "lower-resolution" work, is unfair, as we all know. What's not high-res about the 10,000 x 10,000 pixel images which 3DS will do? Anyway, some people seem to love spending a lot more money…
It's a little obscure, and I was a touch off with my terminology. It's covered on pages 3-58 and 3-59 of the manual. You assign a background image as usual in the 3D editor or keyframer, then go to the 2dshaper, select See Background from the pulldown Views menu. You…
I just read that today, it wasn't too pretty. I'd like to see some wavefront or alias images at that res and colour depth too…
You can import an image into the shaper module and trace around it, if you wish.
Demo Tape Available?
Message #121637
Outstanding! The envelope is in the mail, as they say. One problem, I'm in Canada, eh, so I may not be able to get US stamps. If not, I'll send you some US money to cover expenses. MUCH appreciated, I've heard much about the tape and I'm really looking forward…
Sorry to butt in, but if you're talking about the 94 Siggraph tape, I would just LOVE to get a copy, if I could only find out how!!! I would also really like to get last year's as well. These items seem to be too hard to find, I'd gladly…
If you have a set of sequential .jpg images, you can make an .IFL file (image file list, see 3ds manual) and use that as input for rendering in the video post section, or possibly just render a scene using that list as an animated background bitmap.
Hi there… Yes, I got sidetracked on my thought regarding "animators of all trades". I meant to compare to the early days of photography, where the photographer made his own camera, his own film, took the pictures, and then developed, printed, and marketed the pictures himself .
Here's my Canadian .02 worth (times .7 exchange rate)… I agree with the comments in this thread. My sister, an art educator, author, and artist, recently went digital to expand her knowledge and increase her capabilities. This "debate" rages in the art field, i.e. "computer art, is it art?". Well,…
I think he means things like bitmaps, used sparingly; noise applied to surfaces; slight imperfections in objects like stairs or bricks not meeting perfectly; or possibly scantily clad mesh-models…
I'm not sure about scripts, but there are getting to be lots of cheap programs that will do this for you, such as Mediablitz or Q-Media for around $100.00. These usually have visual time lines for synching sound to images or flics, and could be what you want. good luck,…
major belly laugh at my end…gary
Jeff… Sure, I'd be interested. Mailing address: Gary Sim 304 -1348 Barclay Street Vancouver, B.C., Canada V6E 1H7 Thanks for the reply/offer… Gary
You can create an .IFL file (image file list) either manually or through DOS. See pages 3-46 and 3-47 for what this can do for you. If you have a lot of these files, you can make the IFL with the following DOS command lines (thanks to John K. Jordan,…
Oops, did I say Alt-Printscreen? Should be Control-printscreen
The line you need to add to your 3DS batch file, or Autoexec.bat file if you prefer, is: SET SCREENGRAB=YES Then the Alt-Printscreen key combo will capture the entire screen (cursor included) to an image, the location of which is your current IMAGE-PATH setting. This will capture at your current…
This is the first I've heard of it. Is it a magazine or a series of disks? I'd be interested to learn more about it, if you could please send me a message. Thanks, Gary
Do you get the problem when using palette low, high, or custom? I don't know if that's the problem, tho'. The swap file is only temporarily created, to a size as needed, when you run out of RAM when rendering. 3DS only needs to know where to put the swap…
Thought I'd take a look at the file but couldn't find it. ???
Hi there from Vancouver, Canada… 40 to 1 is an INCREDIBLE ratio, that may be a maximum ratio attained when compressing a flic without much moving in the scene. I don't know any other programs which you might use, so good luck in your search. The message preceding this may…
I've seen ads for a program called Smacker that claims to compress flics to 1/4 to 1/2 their original size. It's by RAD Software, with a Compuserve address 73237,75. It lists for $295.00 USD. I have no idea how well it works, but it might do what you want. When…
If you've got 3D Studio, it's really a must! The "world-creating toolkit" has so much good stuff on it it's incredible. There are over 100 fonts, and hundreds of meshes, maps, and animations. There are files listing all of the goodies, so you can look for them, and there are…
