Mike, PMJI but I keep seeing messages referring to 3D MAX. Any info on what this is, what it will cost, and whether or not there is an upgrade path from 3DS? Thanks, Greg LeVasseur
Raymond, I am running 3DS on a Windows 95 system and it works fine. You just run it in "MS-DOS Mode". What this means is that when you click on the 3DS icon the computer re-boots and runs in what is, essentially, DOS 7. When you leave 3DS the machine…

#W32p vs. VIBCFG at 16.7M
Message #93555
Hi, I have 3D Studio and am using Vibrant's latest driver version 1.0.1.P5. My problem is that with my new ET4000/W32p based card (STB LightSpeed w/2 MB) I cannot get the 640x480x16.7M color mode to work properly. The problem is not with the card as I can get 24 bit…

Jack Oh! Sorry. I'm using R3 and it doesn't matter whether I'm on a network or not. I am using a SummaSketch Plus which is a slightly older (and better made) tablet a bit earlier in the MM series. Nevertheless, 3DS is the ONLY program I have which has a…
#Summagraphics Tablet
Message #65305
I have recently decided to start using my Summagraphics tablet instead of my mouse. I have it working perfectly in AutoCAD, Windows, and all other DOS programs except 3D Studio. The cursor sticks badly, sometimes for many seconds, in the dialog boxes. Is there anything I can do about this?…
Martin, 320×200 wow! I didn't think that resolution would be acceptable to anyone and I've never offered anything less than 640×480. Now I may have to reconsider. It would certainly be more cost-effective for the client. >> I can't help but wonder why Autodesk hasn't come up with an >>…
I make small animations for local businesses and to keep the cost down I use real-time flic playback to tape. A utility(s) like this would be a real godsend so I, for one, am VERY interested. Can you supply more details? Availability? Cost?
You're welcome. Gary et al. have come up with another workaround you might try. Save the file as an ASCII text file and re-load it. Make sure GARDEN.MLI is current. Have patience on the reload. Takes time.

R3 vs. Silicon Garden
Message #63856
I'm the guy who lodged the complaint about the pine tree problem but I've got to agree with Greg Pyros (we Gregs have to stick together ). It IS a drag that the pine trees don't work but I'm sure Gary will take care of the problem. And it really…

Agreed, Saturday mornings aren't the best time for a sales pitch. I prefer evening meetings. Much more civilized.
>> Just go into the Mapping Parameters dialog and change the map type from >> Decal to Tile and they should work fine. Thanks for your prompt reply. The default for the pine tree's materials _is_ Tile in my Mapping Parameters dialog box. I tried all three options anyway and…
#R3 vs. Silicon Garden
Message #63551
Since I am doing my 3rd annual Christmas animation, and since it is supposed to include a Christmas tree, I was most distressed to discover that the Evergreen (among others) tree in Silicon Garden doesn't work right in R3. The "needles" are not getting mapped correctly somehow and look extremely…

Terry Having seen the demo video only once I dont remember the animation in question but my guess is that they brought the animation into Animator Pro and used color cycling.

John, Checked my mail and there's nothing there. Try again? Greg LeVasseur
Have you tried Hyperdisk? I have been using it for years with all kinds of software (QEMM, Windows, 3DS, AutoCAD, Lantastic Z, etc.) and have had no problems. It also happens to be one of the fastest caches you can get. It's a sort-of-shareware program available from the Hyperdisk BBS…

#Small R3 bugs.
Message #61855
Gary et al- R3 is _GREAT_! I am still going through the very well written new tutorial and discovering new wonders. I have, though, discovered a couple of small non-life-threatening bugs that I thought I'd pass along. 1) The delete line (@L), delete end-of-line (@E), and delete word (@W) commands…
Mike- I had the same problem. It isn't the QEMM.SYS line that is the problem. It is the QDPMI.SYS line that is screwing things up. QEMM's DPMI driver seems to be incompatible with AniPro although it doesn't seem to hamper AutoCAD or 3DS. Go figure! Anyway, just delete that line…
Alex, I have heard it is not a good idea to use EMM386.EXE from DOS 6. In fact, I would _strongly_ recommend (as, I believe, does Yost Group) that you use QEMM as a memory manager.
"Hardware-challenged" I LOVE it! I wish I'd thought of that. In fact, I think I will have.
Too bad. I was hoping there might be a _little_ speed gain. Nothing exponenential. I guess rendering is just too processor intensive. Greg
#OS/2?
Message #52564
In the feature list for 3DSR3 I saw an entry that said "Multitasking renderer when run under OS/2." Since I have a friend who won't let me live until I get OS/2, (I've been able to resist him because of 3DSR2), I'm particularly interested. Does multitasking under OS/2 really speed…

Has anybody out there who bought Visual Link any opinions on it? I haven't seen very many messages about it and I'm thinking about getting it soon. Greg LeVasseur

Chris, Thanks for your reply. When you say VESA support do you mean support for VESA drivers or support for VESA Local Bus? Is it necessary that they have VESA support for your driver to work with them? Greg
Jack- Yes, it's me again! A couple of times in your message you mention accelerated boards. I assume you are not really talking about Windows accelerators like the S3 chip et al. So what boards are you referring to? Also, do you have anything yet in the way of drivers…
[Continued] "In fact, manufacturers that make identical ISA and local bus adapters have priced their local bus versions the same as their ISA products. Why? Because they aren't any faster. The bottleneck is not in the bus — it's in the CPU on one side and the graphics coprocessor on…
Jack- Thanks for your very complete response. The work you're doing at Vibrant on 3DS sounds really promising. I'm looking forward to hearing more about it. Incidentally, did you happen to catch Steve Gibson's series of articles in InfoWorld on the pros and cons of local bus? I'd be very…
Jim- Sorry, I didn't really mean to jump all over you. I've just gotten really sick of all the hype and bulls**t going on these days about accelerator chips, local busses, etc. Your messages were a good springboard for me to jump from. My comments were meant to be a…
3DS video card choices
Message #33644
You know, everybody says that their board is n% faster than the other guy's board because they use the xxx chip. However, they are talking about WINDOWS speed and that is misleading, especially here as this is the 3D Studio / Animator forum and they (as well as Acad r12)…
I have tried changing my autoexec.bat and config.sys to a complete vanilla configuration and have tried some different BIOS settings but my venerable old Pro II/s which heretofore has worked with _everything_ will still not work with your supervga.drv driver. Any other suggestions? Greg LeVasseur
Gary- Thanks again for your prompt reply. I am using AniPro 1.3 on my Tangent with AMI BIOS. I cannot find any 4K Tseng 4000 drivers anywhere. I even re-installed Ani to make sure. The drivers I have are TLIVESA.COM in the ANI/VESA/TSENG directory and SUPERVGA.DRV in the ANI/VESA directory.…
Gary, Thanks for your reply and Happy Thanksgiving. Sorry to hear that someone has beat me to the exploding bowling pin animation. Guess I'll have to try something else. Maybe I'll melt 'em instead. The rendering _was_ done with dither 256 off, but it _is_ a pretty fancy scene. Has…

Message #28023
I have recently created an animation of a bowling scene. The camera follows the ball and then zooms in for a tight shot of the ball hitting the pins. (Which will eventually explode when I get my IPAS disk #4). The animation was rendered at 640 x 480 res with…
Mike, I just have to put my .02 in here. My machine, a Tangent, is about as fully loaded as it can get. All slots are taken up by a scanner, SCSI board (for a CD ROM), 3 parallel ports, 3 serial ports, a sound card, VGA card and drive…
Pentium…Is that like "The Pit And The Pentium"? roan.
Scott- Suggest you buy a Tseng ET4000 type board. There are LOTS of them around, they're real cheap, and everything supports them. The Tseng VESA driver that comes with AniPRO works very well. It seems the trouble with S3 type boards (so I hear) is that the people that make…
Yup! That was it. And I thought I had tried it with that sucker turned off too. Anyway, thanks for the quick help. Greg
#Not A Morphable Object!
Message #25612
