Stephen, Just so you know, doing a follow will erase previous rotation keys. You don't need to delete em' first. DM
Hi Michele, PMJI, but are you sure you have the path for the sound set to go to a local drive and not the PAR? That kind of sounds like the error you'd get if you were trying to do that. Other than that I can't think why it wouldn't…
Donald, With Follow using a Bank will sometimes screw you up. Does it still follow incorrectly with Bank off? On P. 8-96 of the Reference guide it states than banking will only work properly if the path is parallel with the top view. Could this be it? DM
Cool! Thanks for the data Stephen. You're the first one to post results with the new setup. I will be saving everything and will post the results as they come in. Weird rendering and not saving anything eh? I've got a 486 also and will post my results as soon…
Greg, Great idea. I can't believe no one thought of this before. 🙂 It's exactly what's needed for network setups also. We should be able to stay at 640×480 and a 1.1 pixel size. In this case I definately think mapping should be on. Actually now we should be able…
Stephen, If we'll be rendering say 15 frames there'd probably be no reason to use a resolution higher than 640×480. I think this is a great idea and is a perfect way to allow it to scale the rendering times. DM
>> I said "OK" Well, I'll be sure and cancel if I ever see that message. 🙂 Thanks for the info. DM
Thanks for info on NTWORK DM
>>Checkdsk, defrag, and scandisk are all fine for drives with long file names under NT. Thanks Greg. That's good to hear. I'm really liking NT so far. Aside from this one little problem it's been very nice. Have you used Speed Razor NT yet? Does it work with the PAR…
>> Using NT and the FAT, I often run scandisk and defrag, (from a DOS boot), without any >> problems at all. Good to know that this works ok. Figures that it should. Thanks for the info. DM
>> Glad to see ya up and going again. Thanks Mike. Mee too! DM
I remember a while back Gary Yost explained just how they did that in the intro the the 94 siggraph reel. Basically, create your text in a package like Photoshop. Then map that onto a large rectangle which you fly past your camera. Use distance cueing and off it goes…
The tearing you are seeing when rendering to fields is only evident on a still frame. When the image is moving fields will make it move much smoother. You need to be playing it back on an interlaced device like a TV though. You don't want to field render a…
I don't think a protected mode DOS app like 3DS would much like RAM doubling software. IMHO, I wouldn't waste your time. DM
James, Are you supposed to provide someone with a working project on CD? If you're just supplying a developer with animation then they will normally tell you what format they'd like it in. FLC's work fine if the CD will only be played on a PC but if it's to…
Take a look in the libraries for examples of refraction mapping. Also take a look at REFRDEMO.ZIP in the IPAS usage library. DM
Joe, I'd say you've got yourself a real nice system that you won't be able to take full advantage of for rendering until MAX is released. With the dual boot option you will be able to run 3DS in DOS but you won't be able to use the second processor.…
Rick, I think that using the Chevy.3ds that everyone has is the way to go. If everyone agrees I believe we should use the following settings to begin with. Martin's right about having to keep times over 100 sec. If we get times faster than this we'll have to change…
See my reply to Mike morgan for what it was. I will keep in mind the bit about Disk doctor though. How about Speeddisk or MS defrag? How about checkdsk /f? Anyone got any more info on this? DM
Thanks anyway Mike but it was nothing to do with the SCSI hardware. I've got it all fixed and believe everyone may want to have info on this. Here goes: When using NT with a FAT partition (such as if you're using dual boot) a file called BOOTSECT.DOS is created…
#NT Help!
Message #195800
Help! Sometime today, something seems to have happened to my DOS boot file. When I reboot and the NT boot menu appears and I choose MS-DOS I get the following error: I/O error accessing boot sector file multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\\BOOTSECT.DOS Selecting NT works fine and if I boot to a floppy I…
Stephen, and everyone else – I read through the entire thread on the chevy.3ds benchmark and don't think the data is readily usable. There are too many inconsistancies in the data for it to mean anything. There are lots of people rendering with mapping off and some with mapping on.…
Paul, No, I can't really say what could be causing your lockups. I've never heard of any problems related to using the hide command. I would suggest changing the video driver to a standard VESA or even VGA and see if that takes care of it. BTW, what version of…
I'm sure we can start a thread with all kinds of client problems. Sure – but let's not. 🙂 I sure understand about bad fonts though. Sometimes you just can't win. DM
Thanks for the info Dave. Hopefully Loren will be able to use that as an alternative to starting over from scratch. DM
Thanks for the feedback Ed. DM
Well Loren, I'd say you're out of luck. No, you can't map the image and have 3DS resize it. I mean it would work but it will still look bad. It would be the same as resizing it in Photoshop or anything else. 3DS will typically make a resize look…
Thanks much for the great tips Brett. Sounds like you've had your shares of this kind of problem. Basically I'm thinking I won't change anything and when they see the component signal they'll be happy. We'll see. I'll be sure and let you know. DM
Hey Mark, What ever happened to that mail I was getting from you? I just wanted to let you know about this lightning thing again. I've finished it and do have it as a .flc (just the lightning part) but it's still big. 2.3Mb zipped. I'll upload it if anyones…
Well Joe, don't get too discouraged. Once you've got everything up and running I think you'll be very happy. I can't tell you anything about the MARS card but I have seen one in action and it seemed to work quite well. As far as 3DS goes, why has it…
Michael, 3DS' and Autocads booleans are completely different in how they work. 3DS is a surface modeler while AME is a solids modelere. Much different for booleans. Doing a boolean on an arbitrary surface is not an easy task and that's where your problems are arising. The next release of…
Mark, Aside from making a gazebo from scratch, which would be fairly easy, there are many places to get models from. Tons of them on the internet and lots of CD's full of them. I'd guess the two Autodesk just released (the props) would have one. I don't really know…
Edo, If your objects are linked in the Keyframer then moving the parent will also move the children. If you want to move the entire path along with the object then hold down the alt key when moving. Otherwise you'll just move a key or make a new key. In…
Tom, The current version (R4) of 3DS doesn't run under NT. The next version MAX will be a completely re-architected NT application. It will support multi-threading and multi-processor. Hope that anwers your question. DM
Mike, We had the same problem some time aog with the Stealth Video card. I think Vibrant would be the people to ask although with Max coming soon they may not be planning too many more updates. What we ended up doing was exchanging it for a Viper which has…
Santiago, PMJI but yeas you can use scanned images in the shaper. You set your image as the background in 3DS and then in the shaper you can do a see background (alt-g). You can then trace it and loft it. This is not the best way to do this…
#Saturated color on TV?
Message #193171
Hi All, I was wondering if anyone had any good tips for getting nicely saturated color on video. Specifically blue and green. I've got a client that just isn't happy with their logo colors on TV. I've tried explaining that if they get more saturated there is too much chroma…
Ed, Sorry, I can't recommend anything in your $700 price range. You might want to check out the MARS card from Daewoo however. It plays back MPEG video from any ol' hard drive and the quality is pretty good. It even outputs in NTSC. I think it may be easily…
Ed, There are lots of different ways to get out to video. If you've only got $1800 to spend then your choices narrow significantly. It will also depend on what kind of quality you need. If you're only going to be doing .AVI's or .FLC's for multimedia titles then you…
Joe, Did you try doing a Display/Unhide/All. Maybe the objects are hidden. I can't think of another reason you wouldn't be able to see them. Can you create primitives in the editor? Have you tried loading a different file and see if it works? Good luck. Leave some more info.…
Danny, Why don't you just model one yourself? A paint can would be _very_ easy. Or is there something more you're not telling? DM
Brad, You can't directly import a photo cd image into 3DS as it doesn't support that file format. Although a .BXP could be written to allow this. What you can do is open the image in Photoshop or anything else that supports .pcd and then save it as a .tga…
>> Hope you get the project. Got it! Just found out this afternoon. Very cool, they must have liked the screen shots. Plus – I gave notice at my job yesterday and they told me they'd use me exclusively for animation projects. So, I'm working out of my home office…
Thanks Will. I'm going to take a look at WinFX based on the recommendations from you and Jeffrey Lerer. Sounds like it would be a very useful tool. DM
Thanks for the great tips Martin. Yep, hand painting is the way I've decided to go. Much more controllable and actually fairly easy – just time consuming. I took a look at Schreibers but it's way too fake looking for what I want to accomplish. I'm actually just bidding on…
Thanks for the tips Paul. I got Imagine FX and it just doesn't do what I want. The lightning just doesn't do it for me. It's too fake looking. Especially up close. I could see using it for background strikes but that's about it. I've decided to hand paint the…
Thanks for the reply Jeffrey. Your solution using skin/slice sounds interesting though difficult. For this project I'm going to handpaint the effect using AniPro and then use that as a mask in LenZFX to control the glow. It's not too much work hand painting – about 180 frames – and…
Thanks Ian, handpainting the effect is exactly how I'm doing it. It's very easy actually and produces a perfectly controllable arc. DM
Thanks Tim, Yes LenzFX can create a glow around an object just fine in it's current version. You just have to use a mask to control it. I tried using Schreibers lightning but was not impressed with it. I could see using it for background lightning but that's it. It's…
Reza, In addition to what others have said you should be using an .IFL to do this and not wildcards. I've run into weird problems while using wildcards and .ifls always fix the problem. DM
