#Help on IPAS
Message #101630
Do the IPAS routines that worked with V2 work with the new V3 or do I need to get all new versions? Mitch

John I think you have hit the bullseye on the reason for the SoftImage purchase. Here are some ideas: 1. SoftImage could form the animation module of an SDK for a TV top developers package. I am sure there are many other components that will all be glued together with…
Here are the details: Microsoft Corp. has signed an agreement to acquire Softimage Inc., a Montreal-based developer of computer animation software, the companies said Monday. The stock transaction, worth about $130 million, has been approved by the boards of both companies. Each share of Softimage stock would be exchanged for…
#Microsoft buys SoftImage
Message #84014
Has anyone heard about this? SoftImage makes a high end 3D Studio like product. What does this mean? Will Autodesk finally throw more resources toward 3DS. Will a Windows 4.0 or NT port finally appear?

Help Wanted/Book Project
Message #60019
Can you tell us anymore about these extremely visual books?
Thank you very much for your answers, they are very helpful and I appreciate your time to explain them. I spent some time working on the bump map approach, creating the dark text on a stone texture in a paint program, them bump mapping the results onto a box slab…
#Etched Letters in Stone

Can anyone tell me how to create the effect of letters etched in stone? Thanks, Mitch
Cylindrical Maps
Message #51030
I have to sit down and write a step by step chart of what I have to do to set up the Vibrant drivers, and glue it to my monitor. Its way to complicated. I sure hope that someday we have a Windows NT version of 3DS. Thanks for your…
Doesn't wolf3d mostly explain fast texture mapping? Its 3D is really a false kind of 3D, no? Now if I could use VistaPro to make flybys that are used in a fast program like Wolf, I'd be excited. What can you say about wolf that is related to vistapro. They…
> From looking over your messages for the past several months, it looks like you've been attempting to _read_ the manual where the sun never shines. > Your right, when I attempt to read the 3DS manual there is so much swamp gas that I can't see what is on…
Michele: I wanna get those books. What is the fastest way to order them. Thanks, Mitch
> Maybe I'm missing something but if you wanted to fly through the pipe, it would have been better to just make a tube not a cylinder (a tube is hollow). Then you wouldn't have to remove the end caps (faces). > Good question Alec. I originally used 16 sided…
I am using the built in PCPADI driver. Is it possible of doing the green and yellow. What does ADI stand for anyway? I have the Vibrant drivers set up on another machine and I still get a black and white mapping icon. Such problems, so little time…not a big…
I'll check into that, thanks.
Thanks…I had to select jus the end of the cylinder then the cap (face) on the end turned into a red line and I knew I got it.
Aha…thanks! That did the trick. Appreciate your help. I could not find this infor anywhere in the manual. I would like to take that manual and put it in a dark place where the sun never shines.
Removing Faces
Message #49816
Mr. Conehead here. Trying to remove the face from the end of a cylinder. I can't figure out how to select it so I can delete it. Help! Mitch
Thanks Doug, I'll be sure an order a copy. Is it out soon? Mitch
Thanks I will try that. I thought perhaps I could just make the texture wider in Animator but the tiling approach sounds better. BTW I did the mapping tutorial over. It mentions a yellow and green mapping rectangle but mine is all black. Also I found a typo on page…
Doug: What is then name of your book and the publisher. I really look forward to it as I like VistaPro a lot. Mitch
#Cylindrical Maps
Message #49503
Jack I tried the cylindrical mapping. What I got for results was the stones of bumpy whitestone texture were spread out around the perimeter of the tube, like they were being stretched horizontally. I make the diamter of the mapping shape really small to try and eliminate that but it…
#Mapping a Smokestack
Message #49069
I am trying to map bumpy white stone material on a tube. I am inside the tube looking down its length. I want the stone to map evenly on the inside surface but instead it seems stretched in a way that doesn't seem natural no matter how I adjust the…
Networked Pentiums
Message #47468
A while back I asked for the name of a good network to connect two 486 or Pentium computers together to render a file while working on another. Someone mentioned the name of a low cost network that they where very satisfied with but I can't recall the name of…
Wow thanks for the tip on Modern Medium and ImageTects.
A flic can be a bump map…whoa that is too heavy to comprehend.
Gosh I had no idea it was so simple! Thanks much…I'll check the World Toolkit CD ROM (I think mine had a crack in it which made parts unattainable). And I will make my own…I didn't know it was so easy.
GMAERS Section 11 Game Design is where the authors live, Mark Betz and Chris Lampton. Occasionally you'll see comments like FOF: locks up, or Flights..great book, etc. Or you can send mail to the author Chris Lampton, 76711,301. The book is in all fine bookstores.
Wow its that simple! Thanks for Ctrl Move Camera. That works nice for a straight line.
The dummy approach worked perfectly. Thanks! Having two paths, one for the camera and one for the camera target seems a bit weird, but I am getting used to it and it does make sense. My tunnel is starting to look really realistic. Now I got to find out where…
Danny: Did you know that newest version of Fractint has a file format that saves as triangles? Dunno if they are compatible with 3DS. Also I heard that Commanche Max Kill is not a fractal technique, even tho it appears that way, but some kind of radiosity mapping. The terrain…
Thank you for your answer John, that was the problem. The size of the bump map and the increment of change in the keyframer frames was just about the same so the effect was the bump map moved backward slightly. I stretched the bump map horizontally and that seemed to…
#constant camera dist
Message #46914
Is there any way to get the camera target to stay a constant distance from the camera as you move forward in the keyframer?
#bump map hallways
Message #46849
I am moving my camera down a hallway with a pitted metal bump map. Everything works fine except the metal material seems to scroll in the wrong direction. As the camera moves forward the material on the wall moves forward too! Am I missing something here. I have used the…
Gosh that Chrome unit sounds like a wonderful product. If I rendered in the full 1150 x 175 line resolution that is equivalent to 5 x 7 feet, how long would it take my trusty 486/66 to do that? Seems like it could take days…. I am favoring the Genoa…
Oh boy that is a great solution compared to what I would have to do to fix it in 3DS. Thanks! Gosh I have 2.01 I believe.
I think 4 megapixels is at the bottom of the scale compared to some figures I have seen that go as high as 25 MP, but I think 3D Studio doesn't care about that figure from what I now understand about its internal 24 bit coloring.
#FLI/FLC to GIF?
Message #38082
Is it possible to convert a frame inside a FLI or FLC to a GIF or targa. I lost the orginal 3ds file and now all I have is the flick. In most cases the FLC or FLI is only one single frame. Thanks, Mitch
Inside a Globe

Yep that was my problem. Faceted instead of smoothed. Normals wrong. Thanks.
Inside a Globe
Message #38070
Thanks for the skydome tip…I'll try that out.
Thanks Steve! Are you saying that I can now tell 3ds2pov to render just a particlar frame to a POV file? If that is what it does that would be wonderful. Mitch
Angelo: Thanks for the tip on ATI. I'm gonna get the Genoa again. Most of my "work" besides coming up with book ideas, is creating object-de-art for computer book covers and catalogs. So far I have just tossed the production department a 640 x 480 x 256 GIF. I guess…
Thanks Jack. I will get brave and try that soon. I have actually mucked up somehow using the keyframer and discovered my geometry all twisted in some bizarre way, so I figure I have some experience now 🙂 Mitch
Thank Martin for the info. You qualified my suspicions and I'm gonna stick with the Genoa which I know works well. When ATI irons out its drivers I'll get one unless something better is out. Do you know how many megapixels you can get out of the ATI. Using the…
Thanks for explaining that to me. Are you saying that when using RCPADI and 8 bit color you would best do this to null? I will try to render to null, but I find I enjoy the security of watching the render. When I press the space bar and hide…
#Inside a Globe
Message #37696
How do I put a globe around my geometry and get it to act like clouds or a sky. When I put a big gshere you see all its facets in the rendering (which is very cool but I want it smooth). Plus I don't know how to get a…
#ATI Ultra vs Genoa 7900
