#136864 #London Amiga Shops? Message #137099
Peter, Thanks. Yep, I play games too, those stores look like they're worth checking out. Not good to hear it's hard to find Amiga stuff in the last stronghold of the machine, though. 🙁 ..Denny
#136844 London Amiga Shops? Message #137098
Thanks, Jim. I'll check out the Tottenhan Ct. Rd. area. Good to hear from you, by the way! Hope all's going well for ya. I've been keeping very busy myself, but if I ever stop long enough to think, I guess I'll decide everything's wonderful. 🙂 …Denny

Great idea, Betty. I'll give John and Janet a call. I'm going over for the ECTS show, and I'm sure they'll be going, so I'll try to do lunch with them or something. Thanks! Denny

Jim, Are you going to do an interface for Amiga drives as well?
#London Amiga Shops? Message #136813
I'll be traveling to the UK in April. Any suggestions for really cool Amiga stores in London? 🙂

Few American TVs will display a PAL signal. My Magnavox does, my little Emerson doesn't. The Maganavox-manufactured 1084 monitors are the only ones that handle PAL well too. Must have something to do with Philips/Magnavox being so big in Europe.
#134685 Cascading Windows Message #134686
Joe, I've seen some PD/shareware programs that will add automatic Window arrangement to the Workbench. I've never used them, so I don't have any specific recommendations. But you might search the Amiga libraries on the keyword "Window" perhaps, or "Workbench." Denny Atkin, Entertainment Editor, COMPUTE Magazine Author, Denny Atkin's Best…
#134279 New 4000s/4000T Message #134615
Steve, I think Raymond was wrong on one things — the EC040 version coming. According to Dave Haynie, the MMU is needed on the 040 for Zorro III to work properly. So it's more likely an LC040, which has an MMU but no FPU; I've heard this rumored before. Denny…
Sheesh, Wolf, here I've recommend your Studio Printer Drivers to about 100 people over the past year or so — not to mention writing a glowing review of it in Amiga Resource — and you respond to a recommendation of my book with "No, don't buy it!!!" ?? Gee…. :sniff:…
#134129 #Best Amiga Tips Message #134170
Well, I figured that one out after seeing ED get a _lot_ dumber between beta and release versions. So I went snooping around and discovered the startup-file was limiting things. It helped that I had a full-time job fooling with Amigas at the time. 🙂 What most people would consider…

#134111 Best Amiga Tips Message #134167
Allan, I'll check on the Australian distribution and get back to you. Or you could order it direct from COMPUTE (see the DAOFFR.TXT file just posted, which should be available for download soon). I'll let you know! Cheers, …Denny
#134078 #Best Amiga Tips Message #134107
Yep, you can order it directly from COMPUTE. On this pass I'm uploading a file called DAOFFR.TXT that includes all the ordering info for single copy sales, as well as the new user-group discounts. (And I'll autograph direct-ordered copies 🙂 It should be available as soon as the sysops check…
#134001 Best Amiga Tips Message #134106
Thanks, Betty! I'll do my best to make the page worth reading!
#133987 #Best Amiga Tips Message #134105
Karl, The discounts are up to 20%. I just uploaded a file called DAOFFR.TXT that, once the sysops release it, will have full info. (I think they like to keep price info out of the message areas.) On the column… It will be a similar tone to the AmigaDOS Gems…
#133921 #Best Amiga Tips Message #134104
Nope, my book wasn't published until 1/93, so it covers AmigaDOS 1.3 through 3.0, and always has! The only bookstore chain I've seen that's pretty consistent about carrying it is Barnes & Noble, but it can be ordered from any Waldenbooks or B.Dalton as well. I just uploaded a file…
#Best Amiga Tips Message #133914
RE: A sequel to Denny Atkin's Best Amiga Tips and Secrets Alas, the book has unfortunately followed the Amiga tradition well: It's a well-received product that has only sold to a select few who've gotten word of it. If it had made it to a second printing, I'd likely have…
#133564 Amiga News needed! Message #133628
Perhaps. But it generally only can help if you have a good product, assuming a responsible publication. I know my book finally started selling in Europe after Amiga Format gave it a 92% in November…
#132940 Australia Upbeat! Message #133624
Denny's Mischevious Teen Years, circa 1979: Radio Shack used to run a BASIC demo program on their b&w TRS-80 Model I and III units. I used to go in and quickly type in a short subroutine that would print TRASH-80 instead of TRS-80 about every five minutes, but only for…
#132860 Amiga News needed! Message #132912
Thanks for the heads-up. Back when I ran COMPUTE's Amiga Resource, I never was able to get eval copies of Gramma stuff to review. Unfortunately, their wonderful products (I'm a big fan on NAG, one of the first PIMs anywhere) have gotten almost no press because they don't seem to…
Amiga News needed! Message #132312
Folks, in case you don't know, in addition to being Entertainment Editor for the all-PC COMPUTE magazine by day and a busy freelancer for AmigaWorld by night, I also do a monthly column for the UK Magazine AMIGA COMPUTING called U.S. News. This column features news and previews of North…

From: Denny Atkin [COMPUTE/Ami Amiga User Forum · Amiga Hardware February 13, 1994 10:02 PM
Jonathan, I'd tell you what I thought of it, but the latest AmigaWorld has a review of the A1230 Turbo+ Series II that says it better than I could.
#129850 AAA runs NT? Message #129956
Hiroo, Sure! Commodore never released a program to enable the 60ns access mode, but someone else did. SpeedRamsey 1.2a by Holger Lubitz will enable the 60ns access mode in the A4000, giving you a nice little speedup. Note, though, that this REALLY does require 60ns RAMs. I tried it in…
#73352 GVP A1230 Turbo+ 2 Message #73570
Kevin, It's the lack of 32-bit memory that's causing your lack of speed. Once you add some RAM to the board you'll be looking at a MAJOR speed increase. Denny Atkin The Best Amiga Tips and Secrets guy, via AutoPilot
#129645- #AAA runs NT? Message #129833
If the next Amiga multitasks Windows NT with AmigaDOS, why, I'll eat a Bill & Melinda Gates wedding picture. The head of Commodore UK is either incredibly technically uninformed, being fed misinformation by his subordinates, or he just likes having fun with the press. I've seen some really wacky claims…

FOLKS: I _really_ want a VIC-20 with an Omega Race cartridge. BAD. I'll trade neat Amiga software for one. Please. 🙂
Roy, As the others mentioned, the 3-D works just fine with Amigas. Syncs to normal and AGA rates. If it's a good deal, go for it! ….denny

What's the solution for us folks with ancient soldered Busters in our A4000s who want to buy A4091 controllers from you? I hear Commodore's not really performig the replacements for folks nowadays due to lack of parts. Is this true?

Eddie, Did you order them from COMPUTE? Or from a bookstore? If it was from COMPUTE, you should have had them within two weeks. If it was from COMPUTE, send email to >internet:casinger@aol.com and let her know about the problem… Glad the drive's working well!
#Pleasance's New Amiga Message #119989
Everyone thinks they want a RISC processor. They don't. Why? Because. When you change microprocessors, you add an emulation layer whenever you run older software. A 100MHz MIPS RISC machine achieves similar performance to a 16 MHz 386SX when running 16-bit Windows applications under Windows NT. A 100MHz RISC Amiga…
#118541 Pleasance's New Amiga Message #118692
Trust me — it's bogus. It doesn't even make any sense… It doesn't address any of Commodore's current markets, it doesn't makes sense in the NT market, etc. Pleasance has often shown he knows very little about the technical aspects of the products he's selling. The best I can figure…

#117995 #Newton Message #118497
I feel sorry for those who've bought Newtons. I like the concept, but it certainly doesn't work well yet. The new yuppie party game is to pass around a Newton and have people write things on it and see what the recognition comes up with. True story: Yesterday at CompUSA…

I read that article. I know it was an interview with David Pleasance, but I've checked my sources and he was in a strange state of fantasy existence when he started talking about that. It certainly caused a few laughs in West Chester. I have NO idea what possessed him…

It's no thinner than before. But they went from perfect-binding to saddle-stiched binding. Although that makes it easier to leave the magazine open, it makes it look thinner. Denny Atkin Book? What book? Oh, THAT book!
#112581 A2024 reboot mode Message #112591
Roy, I hope someone has an answr for you — I only used the A2024 under 2.1 and 3.0, where the whole procedure's a bit easier to deal with. 🙁 Somehow it's not getting added at startup. Maybe you should recopy the icon from your 2.04 disk without changing anything?
#112512 #CD32 Europe Only Message #112590
Steve, As I understand it, Commodore's going to make some CD32s available here through its usual distributor/dealer channels. Which will be good for a few thousand sales to Amiga users. The vast majority of the 1993 units are going to go to England, where they know they can sell all…
#112474 #CD32 Europe Only Message #112589
Gary, Nah, it's only a crisis because Commodore needs the cash-flow they'll get from selling these, not because of Nintendo and Sega. The Intendo (Nintendigo) machine isn't slated to ship until *1995*, and Sega recently publicly stated that they don't have immediate plans for a 32-bit machine because the cost…
#112256 #CD32 Europe Only Message #112472
Greg, That interview with David Pleasance was mind-boggling. Because unless everything I know is wrong, the "super Amiga" he alluded to is pure fantasy… VERY strange.

#111189 SIMM's for 4000 ? Message #111212
Hilary, Unfortunately, as far as I know the only A2000 hard drive controller card that will work in the A4000 is the A2091. (These are available cheap — I got one at Devine for about $75 or so.) There are more expensive SCSI-2 cards available such as the A4091; depends…
